I got the config.opvn file and started openvpn in my kali vm with the file...
The "Initialization Sequence Completed" shows up but i cant ssh into the started machine...

in my case, as my VM Region is Europe, I can see that my target IP 10.80.131.62, is part of the 10.80.0.0/12 range and is reachable via my tun0, i. e. I will reach it via THM VPN tunnel
you will have a different IP range if your VM Region is different than Europe
in case the problem persists with different instances of that room, I suggest you share screenshots similar to mine

If I'm in this Burp Suite: Intruder module, I'm trying to get a username and password from a filtered list. Basically, I have to make the request on the website, then go to Burp Suite, send it to Intruder, clean the dollar signs, enter them one at a time in the username and password fields, then in Play Loads, load the extracted username.txt file into the username field, and the same for the password.txt file. I just need to load the passwords, make sure it's set to pitchfork attack type, and send the attack. The problem is that when it should give me the length, they all have the same 679, and that's an error.

I think that, with the new infrastructure, when you download again a VPN file, it is the same as the previous occurence
that is what I experience for myself at least: I check the MD5 hash of both files with md5sum and I get the same values

Hi, when I'm using the AttackBox to access a website on the aoc sidequest target machine, it has very long timeouts on connection to use.fontawesome.com and cdnjs.cloudflare.com? is it intended to make me wait this long to use this site? I read somewhere that the free attackbox has no internet connection so it won't be able to reach these domains

setting network.http.connection-timeout to a few seconds in about:config helps, but still slows things down a bit

Now its a bit more disapointing... I did the AOC Box and got the Code for the Sidequest... Now is my freetime for the attacker box over and i tried to do it over the VPN with my own Kali vm in VirtaualBox... But i cant even connect to the webpage on port 21337 to enter the key from the AOC sidequest result...
The whole machine is not reachable with my browser, i can ping it but a the nmap scan came back with no results

what could i do more? could it be a missconfig of my box?

however, you hardly ever see any feedback from THM Staff in #1333993673381253162 , hence:

• you do not know whether the bug is recognized as a bug (sometimes a mod like KGB will confirm they have talked to THM)
• you do not know whether THM is doing something (cfr. broken rooms where you do not know whether THM will fix it)
• you do not get notified when the bug has been fixed (you have to visit the room again to discover one day a fix has been implemented)
  sometimes it is difficult to love THM 🙃

• but you start your VPN in another region

Yeah the browser machines do lag quite a bit. Its hard to host them and have them run 100% smooth though. I can't remember if there was another step that I needed to do when using openVPN on Mac.

Dumb question, but are you running openvpn with sudo? I was having issues opening a tunnel and it turned out to be that. Though I'm on a Mac host running a Kali VM as guest, haven't tried connecting direct from mac.

That being said I came here with my own issue - I am connected to openvpn and THM sees me as connected, my target box is running, but when I try to open the website hosted on the target box it seems to be unreachable where it shouldn't be.

I'm dumb, I was accessing the wrong port on the box.

I'm on an M2 mac, so I downloaded the ISO of the ARM64 build of Kali, set up a Linux container in UTM, pointed it at the ISO, and ran the installer. The issue I ran into was that the VM would only render a black screen, I found out there's some issue with the live CDs graphic drivers, so in the vm's settings, I had to add a serial device so I could view the terminal output, and that way I was able to proceed through the installer. https://docs.getutm.app/guides/kali/#troubleshooting

Unless I'm misunderstanding what's not working for you. Were you having trouble starting the kali vm itself, or connecting to the openvpn tunnel on a Kali guest?

Hi, I've been having VPN issues connecting to the machines. I was doing the first two advent of cyber rooms but I wasn't able to get a response from the target machines. I was able to ping them but anything other then a ping kept getting dropped. I tried regenerating my vpn config. I tried running it on my host system instead of the VM but nothing fixed the problem.

The message indicates failing at the MTU value. Are you already on a VPN, if so the MTU values will need to be lower. Try to adjust your MTU setting in the .ovpn file. I didn't nmap the machines (didn't need to) but pings were going through but curl always resulted in a connection being reset and for the AoC Sidequest 2 we needed to go to port 21337 on the machine and that http request also kept getting reset or timing out

nmap is a nice troubleshooting tool to discover whether your target has the services running that you expect

And although I initially did think about running an NMAP scan, I'm currently working on finals for my grad program so I'm kind of doing these AoC challenges to take a break from those. So I just tried running an nmap scan on the machine using nmap -p- --min-rate=1000 -T4 $IP and for some reason it's not responding to pings from nmap but I'm getting a response when I try pinging directly

ICMP ping and nmap ping are not the same: you can have the first second one without the second first one

The thing is, this behaviour isn't limited to just that room. It happened with the first two AoC challenges as well. I ended up working around that by using the attack box. But I was facing the same issue with those machines. I could ping them, with my local VM, but wasn't able to connect to them (SSH in the first challenge and the webpage in the second challenge). So this isn't a problem with just the machine from that challenge.

I’m having some issues with openvpn as well trying to open from my own Ubuntu machine (free user with limited attackbox time so I wanna use my own system). I have openvpn installed and upgraded and such. When I attempt to use the downloaded vpn I get an error message: “Option ‘auth-user-pass’ is not expected to be inline”. So I googled that and tried Google AI’s fix of commenting out the lines below auth-user-pass and putting my username and password in a .txt file to use instead. Then I get an error that says the authentication failed. I have double checked the username and password

Further notes: I did sudo openvpn, regenerated the vpn file and redownloaded it (the server automatically sets so I didn’t need to modify that as far as I know), and tried the MTU 1200 thing after running the troubleshooting script. None of that worked

I have extracted this bit from your screenshot, that shows:

• THM VPN has routing for 10.48.0.0/12
• but the IP for your target is 10.82.188.147, and that is not in the range for the routing
  the reason is, I believe:
• your VPN has been started when your Region under Manage Account was Asia Pacific (Mumbai), because the routing for10.48-49.X.Xcorresponds to the IPs that THM assign to VMs started in Asia Pacific
• while your Region when you started your VM was Europe (Ireland), because THM assign IPs like 10.82.X.X for VMs in that region
  solution: make sure the Region is the same for both

@ivory imp : the confusion arises because, like myself, you probably have the VPN files for all 3 regions in your Kali VM
you just need to be consistent and use the appropriate VPN file depending on the Region for the target VM you decide to use

Yes. I remove those lines and used “auth-user-pass pass.txt” and thats when the authentication error started popping up. I tried “sudo openvpn - -config thm_new.ovpn” (I renamed the file for ease of use) and now it at least runs and doesn’t give any errors but the website still says Not Connected

The current room I’m doing doesn’t require attackbox but I can try one of the previous rooms that does and use the info to see if it works. Does it matter if I do SSH or RDP if I am using Remmina?

about "Not Connected", I do not trust that too much, instead:

• do you have a tun0 IP in the 192.168.x.x range?
• can you ping 192.168.128.1?
• does the output of your openvpn command finish towards the end with Initialization Sequence Completed?
• can you confirm you do not have continuous output for your openvpn command, which would point at an unstable VPN connection
• can you confirm you do not have both THM VPN and THM Attackbox running at the same time?
• can you confirm you are not running multiple instances of THM VPN running (please share ip a)?
  BTW: do not do Ctrl-Z to terminate a VPN connection, but instead Ctrl-C
  about ssh or rdp, the way to access a room is documented by THM in the room material Not all rooms allow remote logins, some of them (like the challenge rooms) are just a target that you interact with (using tools like nmap for instance)
  more generally, I have used remmina for ssh and rdp with THM rooms without problems

I do not know how to solve it, hence let's attempt a few things:

• I do not understand why you use a file ("auth-user-pass pass.txt") to deal with the issue "Option ‘auth-user-pass’ is not expected to be inline" The other user solved it by editing the VPN file, if I understood correctly Maybe there are different ways
• your openvpn executable is 2.5.11, I have 2.6.15 Maybe worth upgrading
• the other user switched region while troubleshooting, and it seemed it helped I would consider that option (you can always revert back later)
  BTW, what is your setup: Kali VM?

• The pass.txt is there to get it to read my username and password. That was just a Google solution. Removing that line completely doesn't work for me. I just have to manually type my login and it still fails.
• I tried "sudo apt upgrade" on openvpn and it didn't upgrade. Should I try uninstalling and reinstalling or is there another way to update it?
• I can try that. Just swap regions, download the new vpn file, and try again?
• Ubuntu 22.04.1. I do have a Kali VM on a different computer I can try this on

In regards to the previous --config thing that worked for me, that isn't working for me anymore for some reason

it seems Ubuntu 22 is still on openvpn 2.5
It think it would be more effective if you could switch to Kali, as that is a very common platform to run THM VPN I have a Kali VM myself we can use for comparisons
hopefully, the issue with pass.txt is not present with Kali, otherwise we can see and switch regions

I finally figured out how to get through. You have to select a learning path on that welcome screen (not do it, just pick one) and then you have to do the warm up room. THEN! It will let you do the daily challenges that are under the warm up room. There is no formal “sign up” which is also confusing.

hello, I'm encountering issues with my THM connection following the latest update.[1]
The new system is preventing me from selecting a server, and it seems to be automatically providing me with a file from the European server region.[2]
I downloaded the file and connected successfully, but I am unable to connect to the target machines. The connection status doesn't appear as active on the access page either.
However, when I try to access 10.10.10.10, I get the following response: flag{connection_verified}. This indicates the VPN tunnel is up, but access to the target machines is failing.
Could you please assist me with troubleshooting this connectivity issue?

Is this a bug in TryHackMe or am I doing something wrong? When I finish a room and get to this screen (screenshot), I can't figure out how to get it to take me to the next room. I can't click on the line or "Next room" above the line to open the room. And if I click the "Go to next room" button at the bottom of the screen, it just keeps moving the selected line in the window to the next room, never actually taking me to the room? Advice?

Hello everyone , This is Regarding the VPN situation in egypt , in egypt we cannot connect to the New THM VPN , probably due to an ISP block so , the following is sort of a way that solved this issue for me (really went overboard here)

so i remebered i had an AWS account , and a though came into my mind , why don't i build an EC2 Instance , make it connect to the THM VPN , and then host a VPN on it and connect to it and tunnel the traffic through it , andd that what i did and it kinda worked

so in summary I set up a working double-tunnel VPN chain where all of my TryHackMe traffic is routed through an AWS EC2 instance first, instead of connecting to THM directly from my machine.

My Local Machine → AWS OpenVPN Server → THM VPN → Target Machines

and now i can interact with the machines through my local kali machine , there might be a better solutions to what i did here but tbh that what came into my mind and i went to build it

if anyone have another fix for that vpn situation please hit me up , i'll keep using my current setup until a fix is found thankss

I'm having issues as well. I downloaded the premium config file, but when I try "sudo openvpn [file-path]" I just get an error saying "Options error: I [CMD-LINE]:1: Error opening Configuration file: ....."

Just sharing that I'm facing the same problem as many others. I installed a Kali VM, which I can start up the tun0 with the ovpn file, but when I run the thm-troubleshoot script I keep getting "MTU value failed at 1000."

I tried to change the MTUs of my tun0 and eth0 and the issue is still happening.

I have a quick doubt to clarify:
I remember tryhackme used to give ip address in the following range: 10.0.0.0/8 for the openvpn users
For example: in their article itself https://help.tryhackme.com/en/articles/8991552-networks-explained-vpn-attackbox-and-security-tips they mention:

    Attackbox and task VMs are in the 10.10.0.0/16 

    Your openVPN IP will be in the 10.0.0.0/8 

    Network rooms will be in the 10.200.0.0/16

I've took a break from THM and now when I connect I am getting the ip in the following range: 192.168.x.x
is this intended? Did they change their routing configs? It just feels weird. I can ping the machines in the 10.0.0.0/8 range and access them but I feel like some times connection backs like reverse shells or sending a file doesnt work and might be related to this

I'm super confused with the new OpenVPN config.

I downloaded the new config from /access and I can use openvpn to get an internal virtual IP (192.168.x.x.), which I understand is correct with the new system. It also shows me as connected.

However, if I actually go into a challenge room, the sidebar shows me as disconnected still and I can't actually access either 10.10.10.10 or the target machine IP. What am I missing?

can you check the /etc/resolv.conf file?
there should be

nameserver 1.1.1.1
nameserver 8.8.8.8

also check mtu size it can help if you set it to 1200

with

sudo ip link set dev tun0 mtu 1200

and 10.10.10.10 will no longer work

The easiest way to upload a file to the attackbox is to set up a http server with python -m http.server on your own machine and then on the atackbox use curl/wget to get the file e.g. curl http://ip:port/file
