Room signature evasion task 2:

So I managed to transfer the .exe to my kali box because sorry if I miss this one that tools used to do it in half more specifically head, dd, or split so I transferred them to my kali and used dd

The commands are:

dd if=shell.exe of=shell_part1.bin bs=1 count=36901
dd if=shell.exe of=shell_part2.bin bs=1 skip=36901

I also tried with .exe instead of .bin

And reuploading the .bin to THM's Windows does not work + Windows 11 VM no detection, am I missing something?

I just want to do it manually first thanks.

To add:

We can use the native utilities head, dd, or split to split a compiled binary. In the below command prompt, we will walk through using head to find the first signature present in a msfvenom binary.

Tho no command prompt is provided, no sample command either of course I did external research, is this a confirmed outdated room?

@ember osprey There is a bug happening where non-VIP accounts cannot connect to the machine regardless of the VPN region. I created a private test room, even with free only, I cannot connect to the machine or ping, interact at all, but VIP users can start the machine and do it normally, only non-VIP users cannot, and then, if a non-VIP user uploads a VM and wants to test it, it will not be possible, because they cannot ping the machine, use, etc, even in the attack box of non-vip accounts it is not possible either.

This is not an issue, all private rooms get set to the lowest available resources. VIP users get an automatic bump on a VM that is launched.

If it is a challenge then they can submit it to go through the room release process and when it makes its way to QA, then we can look into increasing resources

While the room remains private, the handling of resources falls entirely on the user

Hey matheuz, let me attempt to clear any misconceptions regarding vm instances: The most likely reason for a machine not responding to a ping for free users in this case, is that the vm not performing well/at all with the default resources allocated for free users for the vm instance.

1. Keep the room private and adjust the VM to fit the provided default resources for free users

The problem I am facing is though I am connected with the tryhackme's VPN server, on tryhackme's websites it is not showing. I tried deleting and redownloading the configuration file multiple times, changed servers, and refreshed the page numerous times but this issue remains persistent.
The reason I am concerned about is that sometimes I am facing issues while solving rooms like while solving the room 'Blue', the ms17-010 mattck could not get meterpreter shell and it was showing FAILED again and again. Another incident is I was not getting any result after I ran nmap scan on the room 'Ice'. Please help me. I am a novice and want to learn. Thank you in advance guys

That really depens on a lot of factors but Blue and Ice are Windows machines , they don't respond to ICMP ping messages by default which will cause Nmap scan to fail if you don't include -Pn flag to skip ping checks

I think you'll need to retry until you are assigned to a different subnet. However, if you let kgb know which subnet that is (where you can't download the config file), he/we can check with THM Staff on what the issue is?

The error message are: 1. after input "ssh tryhackme@"ip", the password: tryhackme, it returns "Permission denied, please try again". 2. Hello there, I am currently losing my mind with openVPN :)) Whatever I do, it does not seem to successfully connect. It worked yesterday on my VM. Now it does not work either on the VM nor my Linux Mint Distro. Its always getting stuck at:

you use THM AttackBox by accessing with your cursor the right pane that appears 2 minutes after pressing the button to start the AttackBox
you do not "connect" to THM AttackBox, you "access" it as a tab in your browser

I think there is some way to connect via VNC to THM AttackBox, using its public IP
I have done some attempts with that in the past, and I may have some messages on Discord about that
if you want to search THM Discord, search about if via THM users like cmnatic or ._scrubz_. (or even possibly myself)

I have done so successfully on my Kali VM yesterday. But for some reason now it does not work anymore. And Remmina is a tool I found out about via THM :)) Well, I am going to have to investigate a bit further. Thank you anyways 🙂

not much, I am afraid, apart from being patient (come back later?) and being stubborn (restart THM Attackbox over and over)
of course, you can address this issue formally with THM Suport at [e-mail]
as a last note, the few times that I had issues with THM Attackbox failing on me, it was usually in the morning (UK time), and my interpretation was that THM had started their day by "working" on their infrastructure to solve some issues that came up during the night But that is a very wild interpretation If however that is correct, you could expect THM AttackBox to behave better later in the day (UK time)
and this idea: THM has 2 attacking machines for their subscribers:

• the Ubuntu one, commonly referred as THM AttackBox
• and the Kali one: maybe that one is more stable

if you are succesful with THM AttackBox working on the AD: Basic Enumeration network, you could try to copy/paste the ovpn file from THM AttackBox and use it on your local VM (after stopping THM AttackBox)

Oh you're looking for a network file ? Then if there's an issue - try to leave the room and rejoin after 15-20min so that you're placed in a different subnet it usually helps .

Also terminate AttackBox and start it only AFTER starting the network so it gets the interface for the network automatically added 🙂

I was looking at the tryhackme.com/access where it says "Not connected" under Connection as well as the tryhackme.com/room/openvpn room where it states that you can "check if you're connected by looking at the green tick next to connected on the Network Information table on the access page."

The Internal Virtual IP Address is displayed as 0.0.0.0 and remains so no matter how many times it is refreshed. When connecting with OpenVPN, the error message "TLS handshake failed" is shown.

I'm going crazy team - I'm trying to do KoTH games and the connection is driving me mad. I connect to the VPN in my Kali VM and can ping the server, and even do Hydra in the terminal, but the website will not come up and the THM website still shows I'm not connected (even though I can ping and run commands in the CLI).

I've watch YouTube videos, read Reddit, and clearly this is a common issue but I'm stumped trying to find an actual solution.

Anyone have this before?

(BTW - I can't seem to post images to show that I'm connected so you'll have to know that I have no errors in the openvpn and can ping the website. I can even get the flag: "flag{connection_verified}" and still the THM site shows me down.)

The VM received an update to its firewall ruleset. A new port is now allowed by the firewall. After you make sure that you have terminated the VM from Task 2, start the VM for this task. Launch the AttackBox if you haven't done that already. Once both are ready, open the terminal on the AttackBox and use Nmap to launch an ACK scan against the target VM. How many ports appear unfiltered?

I started the machine form the task as instructed but all I seem to get is that all the ports are unfiltered as seen in the screenshot. Maybe I'm doing soemthing wrong but the AI friend you have on the page said that it could be misconfiguration.

I’m noticing a possible issue with my streak. My dashboard shows 197 days of activity, but my streak only shows 195 days — and I’m absolutely sure I’ve been active every single day.

🕒 On July 22nd, I submitted answers around 6:30 AM and again at 7:30 PM (U.S. Eastern time). That’s well within a 24-hour window, and I’ve been careful to stay consistent daily. I understand TryHackMe tracks streaks using UK time (UTC), and I’ve been mindful of that difference.

📌 I had a similar issue back on June 12, 2025, where my activity didn’t seem to count despite doing lab work. I ended up having to use a Freeze Streak token then — and I still have one now, but I’m not sure if it will auto-apply or if my streak will reset.

This streak represents a huge amount of consistent effort and learning, and I’d really appreciate it if someone could check the logs to confirm my activity.

I was doing the final Race Condition task (I've just finished it) but everytime I'd try to login it'd return a 500, or log out, or click a button. The machine was having a conniption so the task took like 5 times longer than it should have

Usually, at midnight (eastern time) is when I get the streak but didn't pull in answer until this morning at 6 and half hours after midnight at 6:30am. I didn't see the streak come in. I went to work on 12 hour shift and came home and answered again @ 7:30 pm... no streak!! Todays box was gray with no activity until, I fired up a new VM. And that's when it showed activity. Strange I know!! Maybe it showed streak and I missed it. But a lot of the time I will submit answers at midnight and get my streak, whick will be 1 and a half hours from now.

This was the before shot and you can see there is no activity on todays box and still at 195. Both screen shots shows 195 with today having no activity and the other having activity

Well, I didn't get enough on the screen shot to see 195 streak. Something is off.

I was using TryHackMe Premium on my Kali VM Firefox browser. I have a habit of suspending the machine rather than closing it & ofcourse it shouldn't be an issue at all. I was suspending the machine in between solving the labs since a year. But today when I resume my kali VM & try to open TryHackMe website, the webpage of that particular website is showing blank. I tried clearing the cache of the Firefox browser, rebooting the Kali VM, nothing is resolving the issue. I then checked opening other websites too. They all are working fine except TryHackMe. I also checked the TryHackMe website on my host machine. It's working fine there but not in Kali Linux Firefox browser. What could have gone wrong?

Might have found the culprit why most of the stuff on the VM is not working... even though I am connected to the VPN, the browsers still route everything via the eth0 instead of tun0. If I do ifconfig eth0 down that will mess up my whole network instead of just stopping the routing through it. Right?

The Start Machine button in the Zeek room is green but unclickable. So i figured they are working on it and went to the Brim room and that button is greyed out. I have a premium account. Hey all, I have a question. When using all the TryHackMe virtual environments, are there any recommendations on best ways to interact with the virtual machines? I’ve been doing them all in-browser split screen style but I’d like to start to do them as I would in a real environment, maybe on my kali VM, or Windows RDP. I’ve seen some walkthroughs with members showing the walkthroughs in full screen on maybe a kali virtual machine - Does anyone do the rooms on a setup like this? I tried using Windows RDP but that didn’t work. I’m a paid member - just figured I’d ask if anyone used a virtual kali or Ubuntu machine to remote into the IPs for learning. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Your own VM is the way to go. The attackbox is great, but you are more limited as to what you can do. Also, the attackbox is nonpersistent, anything you do won't save. If you have your own VM you can build it how you want.

Oh okay thank you so much, I’ll try that. I downloaded the file and tried on my home windows machine using RDP but that didn’t work, but I think I understand now, the file is the application that you use to connect (OpenVPN) I think before I just ran it then tried connecting using Windows Remote Desktop Protocol. I’ll do this on the Kali VM, that makes sense. Thank you so much for the help. Really appreciate it.

RDP is a bit different. A machine has to have RDP open for you to remote into using that protocol. The vpn file will connect you to the TryHackMe network so you can access machines. Feel free to reach out anytime and I can help you get started.

You can't anymore , those rooms have been delisted , use the room Walking An Application instead it's a new version of those rooms 🙂

That feature is broken, but so long as you can reach 10.10.10.10 through yout browser, you should be good to go.

Leave the room, and rejoin after ~30 mins. It should move you to a different subnet and allow you to download an OpenVPN file successfully.

Hello there, I was on the breachingad room and my connection got disconnected i've exited the room and joined back and i've also replaced the dc ip with the new one in my /etc/resolv.conf but it doesn't resolve the domain names or responds to my ping requests and also nmap scan is showing filtered and yes i restarted network manager and networking.service after.
