Hey folks, small issue with the Gobuster basics room. dnsmasq fails to restart after adding the nameserver line to resolv-dnsmasq. Each time I try to restart, I just get a message that says 'Job for dnsmasq.service failed because the control process exited with error code'. Any ideas?

Tried stopping the service then starting it again instead of just using the restart command, but same error. Any help would be appreciated!

Issue with frozen room on TryHackMe – REMnux: Getting Started
Hey everyone! Just sharing in case someone can help me or ran into the same problem.

After completing Task 4 in the REMnux: Getting Started room, everything froze — the VM crashed and the whole page became unresponsive. I waited for the VM to expire, but no luck.

Tried all the steps suggested by support:

• Cleared cache & cookies
• Disabled extensions and VPN
• Restarted browser and system
• Tried leaving and rejoining the room

After several tries, I managed to restart the room — but every time tasks begin to load, the page freezes again.
When I leave the room, it still shows a frozen "Join Room" screen with 0% progress, even though my dashboard shows 61%, which was my real progress before the crash.

I suspect the VM glitched out and is blocking the room from loading. But I can’t shut it down because the controls only appear after the room fully loads — which causes the room to freeze

Let me know if anyone’s seen this before or has a fix! 🙏

I appologize if this question has already been asked, but is it normal for there to be considerable lag when accessing a target machine GUI while connected to TryHackMe through OpenVPN? My local machine running Kali is snappy and responsive, and has fast internet speed, but the target machine GUI itself is rather slow. I'm connected to my closest VPN server which is "US-West-VIP-1". Any info would be greatly appreciated and if there is a way to speed things up, I'd be very interested in learning. Thank you.

For some rooms when you start a machine you get an in-browser desktop environment. For example, I was working through a Wireshark room and I was instructed to press the green button to start the machine and work through a .pcapng file. The GUI was very slow to respond to input.

AttackBox? If so, then I think just with it being based in the browser it is kinda limited therefore not as quick as your own machine. I do also find it to be kinda slow and therefore try to use my own VM when possible

Dear TryHackMe minds. Disable the task blocking function! Or, as a last resort, make it so that the user can decide whether to enable it or not. I have a paid subscription. I want to have access. I don't need these puzzles. And what's more, not all rooms have up-to-date task descriptions, since they were written three or four years ago, and now there is no way to move on to the next one, and then return to what didn't work out. Please. Rest more. Because of such nuances, there is more and more desire to look into another platform and not renew the subscription.

on the attackbox, use the command tryconnectme in the terminal and follow the prompts. the network you're trying to connect to is called wreathv2

but essentially you have to start the network, then go to your acces page under your profile, then select the networks tab, click on "wreathv2" from the dropdown, click on regenerate, then use the command openvpn --config /root/Desktop/NetworkConfigs/wreathv2.ovpn --daemon --log /root/Desktop/NetworkConfigs/logs/wreathv2.log in your attackbox.

Okay no it still works. Look at the link it gives you its all lowercase. But your link contains upper case which causes the error.
To fix it you have to make your browser forget the mixed chars that you've already put in and then input the lowercase only url.

You could always use your own VM for better performance . Nothing's wrong with Brave but due to his privacy/ad-blocking nature it may block pop-ups / split-screens like the AttackBox 🙂

The estimated time for some rooms are quite unrealistic IMO.

Maybe it needs a bit of fine tuning to improve its accuracy. Some rooms are given 20 mins or 30 mins. But in reality they require a lot of reading and trial and error to figure out the answers and completing the tasks.

Does anyone use Kali on WSL with OpenVPN running directly on Kali?
I have a strange behavior that I start to encounter on the Vulnversity room: on the web interface, I cannot upload files larger than 1Ko (the server respond after 10s without uploading the file)
I have a similar issue with the Blue room, when I launch the exploit, it hangs on Sending all but last fragment of exploit packet
If I launch OpenVPN on the host (Windows) I don't have this issue (but I have to configure port forwarding)

A number of folks have had networking-related issues using WSL. Thus, if you have resource to spare, I would suggest running Kali in VMware or Virtualbox.

The only option you have is to use the Attackbox.

It's a mixture in my opinion. Some (most) do require a lot of energy and reading, etc. If you have previous experience some you might finish it even faster. There's definitely some where you might need a few hours and you'll end the room with 60% because you have something to do outside of a computer. I don't like doing that but it does happen. You simply run out of time. At least from what I've experienced. My username here doesn't imply that I know anything though. I just love learning. I still have to team up sometime soon.

In the AD rooms you have to use sed -i '1s|^|namerserver $THMDCIP\n|' /etc/resolv-dnsmasq but it doesn't add thmdc to the known dns. Last week i got told to just restart the attackbox, it didn't worked, and nobody answered since xD

I found out other people had the same problem, but they are very vague with their solutions

Hey guys I have a problem on Gobuster: The Basics -> they told me to set nameserver in /etc/resolv-dnsmasq and then restart the dnsmasq service.
First attempt failed due to the fact that port 53 is already in use in the attackBox, so I changed the default port service in 5354 and the service started.
However the site in not resolved anyway
Any suggestions?

I've done it a couple times, with my username

now i try to do it with my full name (someone asked me for it) and i realize i can't anymore

like, the paths i've completed, i can't choose anymore between full name and username before creating and downloading it

*** ROOM/SITE HELP REQUEST ***

I am working through the Cybersecurity 101 Path and am currently stuck on “REMnux: Getting Started” which is under the “Defensive Security Tooling” module.

End of last week, towards the end of working through the room the site started having issues, I left the room and moved on to other training.

Today I try and access it and am still having issues.

Problems are: Selecting the “REMnux: Getting Started” room brings me to the room however it just hangs. My Room Completed percentage shows nothing sometimes, and others it will show correct percentage and displays some Tasks as completed but currently on Task 5 and it hangs.

The page will sometimes try and reload after minutes of nothing, sometimes displays that the webpage has crashed.

I have deleted browser cookies/data for THM and closed/reopened browser (Safari - iPad) with the same issue present.

I have completed 99% of this Path on this same iPad + Safari so that shouldn’t be a compatibility issue, just for context.

Hi,I suspect that a user is cheating in TryHackMe rooms to gain more points and maintain a leading position in the league. Is there a way to report this, or should we just leave it as is? The Forensics section in SOC Path 1 has SO many tasks in different rooms that are outdated. Task 5 of this room for example: https://tryhackme.com/room/critical

It builds up on the first question, but the destination process at port 80 in the memory dump is completely different. And the website only accepts the old answer.

While I don't mind as it forces me to explore more, it can be sometimes downright frustrating when you know you are doing something right, but the site won't accept your answer.

I have tried all of these tricks and it is still not working. I am using Firefox with no extensions. Hi all, my openvpn is acting weird since yesterday. I have tried re-downloading openvpn file mutlipe times.

On my kali, I was able to connect to TryHackMe' openvpn, but pinging the machine's IP address fails. However, when I navigate to 10.10.10.10 on the browser, it says I'm connected to TryHackMe.

i am unable to log into my account, and i dont know what happened. ive been using it for the past months daily, and no issues. also ive used it today too, was able to complete rooms, but after a break, when i loaded up the website i was logget out. now i cant log in, it says "Uh-oh! That authentication code is not valid.". i never got a 2fa prompt before, but now i do, and since i have it saved into my PW manager, i dont think i am failing that one by wrong password. ive tried recovery codes, but they dont work either
