I wouldn't say so, no. Part of it being content and part of it being recognition from HR and hiring managers. Sec+ is a "known quantity" baseline of knowledge and SEC1, like many new certs, will simply take time to become accepted. But they gotta start somewhere

True. I do see SEC1 certification becoming a strong asset to breaking into cybersecurity really quick. Especially when it’s hands on focus which I really like.

SEC-1 doesn't really seem that important from my research and considering I'm still just beginning the SOC L1 path and I have no more than 20-30 minutes a day for THM.. so, half the time or maybe even a year, the optional certificate will go to waste.

Thanks! I see you questioned the reason for the 24hr limit. If i understand it correctly and you can take breaks between sessions, it makes sense to me- 7 hours straight can be challenging to arrange time for if you for example work full time and have children. Also, it would prevent minor connection issues (such as for those of us who live in the woods) from messing up your run.

So I just passed SEC1 (barely passed with a score of 480).
I was so disappointed. I realized I absolutely suck at Web Pentesting (60/100) and Bruteforcing and Cracking (10/100).
I had absolutely no problems in the rooms (all passed smoothly without any help, everything well understood), and yet I was absolutely crushed by this exam...

For example, I have a login page, I'm being told I have to retrieve the admin password. No matter what I do, using all the tools and knowledge acquired so far, exploring all options with nmap, gobuster, sqlmap, metasploit, hydra..., exploring every line of code of every page, trying to find hidden stuff, still NOTHING...

What am I missing here? I would like to start over from the beginning, but I've already done Pre Security and Cyber Security 101, well understood everything. So what now, to actually get useful knowledge that allows me to try again and get decent results at this exam?

Ah that’s a onfido thing, I think it allows you to use your mobile phone camera, that’s what I did when I tested it.

First off congratulations on passing, that itself demonstrates that you've learned a huge amount from your preparations. if there are specific topics like you mentioned that you want to get a higher score on then going back to those rooms again making sure you really understand everything. Their might be some topics that with the experience of hindsight, especially with the exam scenarios/contracts fresh in your mind, you may be able to have a deeper level of learnings.

Thanks. Well, I went back to all the relevant rooms to see if I've missed something, but I don't see anything. For example, command injection or SQL injection, ok I get it, I know how to proceed, what the tools and commands are. Simply, during the exam, none of that would work. I ended up trying desperate stuff (trying to find any vulnerabilities + Metasploit, bruteforcing with Burp...) but nothing.

I have the feeling I need someone to teach me how to approach a situation. I guess what I'm missing (and that is not taught in the rooms) is the ability to find by myself right away (because it's time-sensitive in the context of an exam) the best type of attack depending on the context, among all the possible scenarios.

Is it possible to find that in this community? Or are there private tutoring services for that?

Yeah turns out before you finish the check in, at least, you can just switch over to another machine so i grabbed a laptop and did the verification there. I use a gopro as webcam on my desktop, its iffy with anothing that's not discord or OBS :P

I'll have to disagree about the time limit part (since its a 101 cert), otherwise i agree with you.

I passed and got 580- most of it felt like a breeze, a few times i had to stop and remember what the actual question was to make sure i gave the intended answer. I was not well prepared for at least one of the "red" sections, it felt a bit beyond cybersec 101 path, or at least like it had numerous attack surfaces given the timelimit, i see how this is something that would be less of an issue if I had practiced way more on pentesting in particular (i've focused mostly on sec-engineer after cybersec101 and have a background in low-level windows and sysadmin mostly) so i'd recommend for anyone unsure to just do more of the pentesting path and make sure to practice those basics.

I haven't taken any other certs, but was studying for comptia before i found tryhackme- gotta say if i wanted someone working with me who had 2-3 comptia certs or just this SEC1 cert i'd pick SEC1, seems to me you can buzzword-association and flashcard your way through comptia, while this shows that you at one point actually did do something promptly and correctly. I've worked with a few people who knew all the terms but still got visibly uncomfortable and unsure as soon as a terminal is opened.

Depends on what you're strong/weak on now. Without going into details, i myself should have brushed up on the offensive parts of 101 and perhaps gone a bit further into the penetration tester path. Most of all, try not to get stuck, i wasted a lot of time on just trying to get the (probably) wrong approach to work at one point, should've just moved on.

Hello guys i’m new to here , I wanted to ask if anyone here can say how difficult is the exam, I’m making a career change but I’ve used computers all my life and now finished th cybersecurity 101 path, how hard is it really? And after you purchase it, do you have to take the exam right away? Thank you guys!

You don't have to take it right away, you choose to start a check in process when you want to begin, you verify identity, and then you start. I don't know how long you have to take it, I think someone further up in this channel said something about it?

As for difficulty, depends on career you're coming from as well, 'user', 'power user' and 'hacker' are very distinct levels when it comes to using computers, this is not something you pass by being a typical user, and it takes more than just being a power user as well :P

I'd say if you feel like you have the 101 down very good as in you can effortlessly recall and use every skill it teaches perfectly, you might be ready.

If not, you might wanna go through the web fundamentals path, and most of the SOC level 1 and jr penetration tester path, they repeat and expand on the 101 material and repetition is your friend before a time limited exam.

For reference, when I took it i was 45% through Jr penetration tester, ~70% through web fundamentals, 15% SOC level 1 and ~80% though security engineer and I struggled on one of the "red" rooms, and the one I didn't struggle on I still was time pressed on.

Hi @severe girder , this is a good sum-up here by Arthur I think.
I completed Pre Security and Cyber Security 101 before taking the exam, and yet I barely passed it. I was fine for the blue team and malware analysis part, but sucked at the red team part. DKob gave me a hint that for the section I completely failed (with 10/100!) I used the right tool and command, but with one word being incorrect in my command.
I think if I had more experience and a deeper knowledge in those tools, I'd have realized it right away instead of immediately switching to other approaches (which were wrong of course and made me fail the whole section by wasting all my time on useless stuff).
So I will use my free retake later when I feel I truly master all the tools.

Same here… honest review: I don’t think the Cybersecurity 101 path sets someone up well enough to pass with flying colors. There’s a lot of gray areas in the modules, one in particular you’re unsure of what DFIR tools to even use.. everything is laggy/slow and you’re fighting a timer that goes quick! So idk.. paying for it again I at least know what to try and focus on.

Well, I can tell you what I’m gonna do. I definitely need to spend more time in red team rooms, exploiting web pages, finding the vulnerabilities in the page source, html, JavaScript etc. I also am gonna take a look at all the DFIR tools they have in this file folder that’s in one of the modules, (stuff like pestudio, Exterro FTK imager, etc.. those types of modules are where I failed mostly.

I honestly think Cyber 101 is enough + 1 specific room from last years Advent of Cyber. If you did AoC you will be fine. I honestly messed up just being too advanced on one of the pen testing room and thats because I went way too much into the red pathway already. But I enjoyed the experience and grateful I get a free retake 🙂

You are free to use, the course pathway during the exam. I wouldn't be launching any VMs though as we know by experience you are only allowed one VM open at a time which would be the exam VM. But you can read any rooms content. You can use google or your favourite AI engine too. But the scenario and questions are worded in a way that renders most AI tools useless without a well engineered prompt. I will say though, this exam is practical so focus on the rooms in the pathway that gives you practical knowledge of doing things rather than theoretical knowledge. Good luck if you decide to take it.

Cyber Security 101 and Advent of Cyber 2025 Malware Analysis - Malhare.exe - there is a test on malware analysis. It goes more into depth on how to use PEStudio which I believe isn't touched on much in the Cyber Security 101. Not that you have to use that tool, the ones in the pathway introduced are adequate. Though I got 6/10 on this part so I obviously missed something.

P.S the scenario you get in the exam could be completely different from mine. It's not the same exam for everyone.

Know how to find yourself around the command line/terminal/powershell, feel comfortable typing commands, directory traversal etc. Make sure you know how Wireshark works for the networking part. Hopefully this gives you some helpful insights.

I will say this though just use the AttackBox for the penetration tasks and save yourself the headache. It's so much faster as there is zero latency. My Kali with 8GB allocated to it and 4 processors is still no where near as fast as AttackBox for cracking stuff.

There was a question in brute force section in, which we had to find the password of student, were we supposed to use hydra or burp suite? Because I used burp suite intruder and rockyou.txt but my VM hanged literally for 2 minutes and had to restart it mid-test

Hydra as burp suite can only do 100 words I believe unless you buy a license. In a professional setting you would use burp with intruder though. Unless attackbox has a commercial license for burp. I haven't checked.

The pen testing is definately the harder section of the exam though and recommend people to brush up on the topics. As if you can't answer or past one question, you will automatically fail the rest as they build on one another.

It was a fun exam, web pen testing needs a little knockdown in difficulty in my opinion for a foundational exam but hey that's me. Very happy I passed.

maybe it's telling me I am more suited towards blue teaming shrugs again, good use of the exam to show which path to follow and what interests you the most.

I'm not too sure then, without specifics it makes it hard to say exactly what went wrong but as this is an official exam you can't share those needed specifics to diagnose exactly 🤷‍♂️ The learning pathway sections should be enough to do the exam though having said that. Totally depends how much you learned buddy, I have completed security engineer path as well as jr pen tester and web fundamentals and currently on web hacking, but still couldn't score well in brute force, so it depends on how much you practice and how well you learned from those rooms.

I used to Copy paste all the info in GPT to Copy on my note the summery but I don't like the gpt's summarizing way.

Then with my notes written I complete rooms' exercises and I go through out the module.

When I end the module I effectively start to study and I also use chatgpt to understand better the topics which I struggle the most with.

At the end of this Battle I Copy paste all the info of the rooms in gpt and I ask It to create an exam to validate my knowledge and skills.

Please remember that THM certs are not industry recognized (aka you won't get hired from them) but THM is a solid recognized learning tool. if you are looking for industry standard employable, a mix of "hands-on" learning that THM supplies, Security + CompTIA. Unfortunately it is not cheap, but that is the IT industry. If you are really serious about working in IT, a Bachelor of Computer Science, at a recognized University 4 years. Again cost is the problem

Hey Guys, I am almost done with Cyber Security 101, does anybody recommend any rooms/walkthroughs to prepare for sec1?

I would like similar level of complexity rooms just to see if I am ready or there is anything I should work on more :)

from what i have read, Digital Forensics is a focal point, also have windows and linux cheat sheets forensics on hand. It is a broad and extensive exam that covers both defense and offence. The good thing is you have 24 hours to complete it. find cheat sheets for basic linux commands and windows commands. break down the questions you are being asked. look online for similar levels of knowledge. THM doesn't say it out loud but google is your answer, you just need to be curios enough to search and problem solve, not have results handed to you.

It was a bit of both, some of them were plain easy while some of them were kinda difficult cuz I mostly am good with OFFSEC stuff.

im doing the roadmap, and im in 60%..in this certification will have metasploit/javascript/burp suit etc.. ? cz im on Web Hacking learning Burp Suit now.. and idk if im going too far..cz i dont see the Web hacking topics or is include in Password attacks and credential security?

hello pals, I just arrived to Gobusters room, and I'm a bit confused with the nameservers config
I'm working from a kali rolling VM, and I tried to set up the resolv-dnsmasq file but it's driving me crazy, since it appears to not exist in this distro, nor via systemctl commands. I wonder if it isn't needed at all in this particular case, cuz I'm not 100% sure if the instructions are meant only for the attackBox config

I haven't. I've gone in the way of installing dnsmasq service and adding the config file /etc/resolv-dnsmasq, like in the instructions. I'm gonna test if it works
