The plan is dark blue with dark red markings; I'm going for a tropical squid aesthetic as it's too big and interesting a monster to just give a bland brown paint job like the official art. I want it to look like a blue ringed octopus or a venomous squid

What you could do Vegan, is make a big chart of 100 items, some single use and others like enchanted arrows. Have the players roll a d100. And go from There. That's what my DM does. It's genius because he uses a lot of pop culture references. Such as the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch from Monty Python.

Another example is my mom's character's flight boots.

I got a quick question: i just got my first mini the other day, an unpainted young green dragon, and want to paint it soon. I’m brand new to the mini paining world, so i have no idea what’s best, but for the campaign I’m dming, one of the final bosses will be a shadow dragon. I’m thinking of painting this mini to be a shadow dragon, but I’m worried i should just stick to what it actually is. Could someone advice me which way is the wiser?

Thanks, I use a technique for the chest where you mask it after spraying with blu-tac. It worked surprisingly well, giving very crisp lines

The "secret" to drawing people is the same secret to drawing anything else: start small to learn and understand it before trying to do anything big. And then don't stop practicing as you branch out and expand your understanding of the subject.

@subtle quarry The secret is study, humans and any organic form really are subject to specific anatomical rules(very different ones from machinery) that must be followed to communicate their form and function. Diplo has a good point, start small and piece it together one step at a time.

I have no idea how to use an airbrush...

the craziest mini I've ever seen had each scale a different color, on a gradient

so like the head was orange, but it got steadily redder until eventually it got to the black tip of the tail

and each scale was individually painted

The hardest part is learning how to maintain and clean it

And gradients are much easier with an airbrush
