I'm making an Undead Warlock Plasmoid who loves fashion, monsters, art, and writing.
Until meeting their patron, they felt like a nobody, and they didn't really know what they liked. But now, they feel like slightly less of a nobody. Over the course of whatever campaign I put them in, they will start to feel less and less like a nobody.
Their patron is an imprisoned immortal changeling who just wants their many names to never be forgotten by the world. They are both co-writers, and they are trying to write timeless classics with the patron's many identities featured as characters.
I'm having a difficult time imagining how they would look below the neck, so I only drew their head and the hood of their mimic-inspired hoodie.
Gonna try posting an LFA of them on r/characterdrawing soon so I can get some better looking art of them

My druid's commission was completed!

Meet Aliros Boughshatter, the Circle of Stars Druid (previously a Totem Barbarian & Moon Druid).

Aliros was exiled from his village after his temper (whilst wildshaped into a bear) almost killed a fellow druid.

He spent the next 30 years travelling the world, mostly living in human villages and hiding his half-giant form with his disguise self magic. However, despite his love for humans and their enjoyment of the little things (booze, music, and festivals), they always ended up discovering what he was and chasing him from their villages.

Aliros came across a party of adventurers known as The Saviors and ended up joining them. After some time battling with them and learning the terrors of the Red Madness that was sweeping the land, he began to feel that his temper was causing the group more trouble than it was helping them. After one of the party members died, the group split up to pursue ways they could grow stronger. For Aliros, this meant visiting the Whisperwood Forest and spending the entire year getting in touch with his more peaceful, natural side. He developed control over his temper and learned to control the celestial energies of the stars. By the time the group met up again, he was powerful enough to cast reincarnate on their fallen companion (whose body had been cared for by a friendly cleric).

During this time, Aliros also met his companion Whiskers. Whiskers was an intelligent squirrel familiar with an extremely smug attitude, however the pair of them developed an unusual bond where Whiskers believes he is the master in the relationship. Some time after the Saviors reconvened, Whiskers was slain by a Shoosuva - a hyena demon. Aliros wasted no time in reincarnating him, bringing his soul into a new body which took the form of a miniature sabre-toothed cat.

The pair are currently doing well, having grown a large druid grove around the keep of the Saviors, and searching for a cure to the Red Madness.

For reference for character discussion, here is my Mountain Dwarf Noble Warlock (Genie), Lord Haargen Claymane. I use an old Fire Emblem character creator to mix and match faces, hair, armor from the old GBA games, then repalette them and manually adjust shading, dropping them in a pixel editor to clean them up, add eyebrows, elf ears etc (so not 100% my own work but like 50%, full disclosure).

You dont need a good art program to make good art.

I use ms paint myself. Here is an old ms paint sketch I did.

But it def does help. I would suggest the free program kirta or kleki which is free online

tracing/copying others art is a time-honored way to learn to draw - just don't post it as your own and make sure to cite your references

if you draw by learning from those artists, like how they made light or creases in clothing or even colors

because if you go to deep into copying you can start copying their style

and never really developing yours xd

you can learn lots of things by copying although you may not understand the "why" unless you spend time thinking about it or can ask the original artist.

But I also recommend learning from several sources so you don't end up just taking on another artist's style.

I never really copied myself.
I was more of a draw whatever I feel like kind of person. So that meant mostly dragons.

As long as you practice you will get better

Practice tbh, and studying how different artists draw things. Watching process gifs or videos is a really good way to learn the basics of how light and shadow work too! There’s a lot of artists on IG that are very open about their process too, and you can see why, like DyingNoob was saying, people do what they do.

But yes our brains can get an eye for art a lot easier than technical ability so it’s all about doing it literally everyday and trying new things you don’t draw a lot

okay, let me ask you this. how do you personally draw dragons? do you design them or copy them from other artsits designs but add your own twist to it, lets say? I'm asking this out of curiosity to see how other poeple design stuff that aren't related to the gaming industry, since I'm a lead concept artist for a studio and i run an art team that design things on daily and we do designs as industry standard ways do.

A unique robotic aberration I drew!
Character: Beholder Mk 1, Robotic Beholder
A large aberration construct, Beholder Mk 1was created by an elderly beholder named Grimwär. Fully composed of adamantine, mithral, platinum, and magic gems, along with gold and silver for wiring, this is a fearsome creation!
With help from the magic gems, this construct is capable to hover higher than an average beholder and employ various types of destructive tactics that exceed the power of its organic counterpart, not to mention it's eyestalks come attached with razor-sharp claws.
For what purpose did Grimwär create this construct? WHO CARES!? If this thing evolves consciousness, it will be unstoppable!

I'm a bit conflicted on the coins though. The Romethi are extremely vain, and therefore wear a lot of cosmetics in an attempt to inflate their worth. A friend of mine pointed out that Romethi would probably melt the silver/gold coins to make jewellery, like they did with the blue flags. So I was thinking of maybe making them use ceramic/porcelain coins or notes, though these hold no intrinsic value, and thus wouldn't serve well as a coinage you'd be able to use anywhere? Thoughts?

if the dm is reasonable, you may be able to just have a chat with them about it.. they may have ideas that work with yours to allow the character to integrate into their worldview.. plus it may give them additional plots and hooks that they didnt have before.. worth a shot.. keep up the good work!

They may be constantly chased by a group looking to profit off of the rarity of the species.. or perhaps there's a foreboding prophecy regarding the reappearance of a long forgotten race..

or, they may not, and you continue to tailor the character to your liking until you find a campaign they fit into..

I suggest not investing in a character idea prior to talking to your DM and sitting in on the session zero. Will save a lot of heartache.

I find that when you make a character knowing that you might not be able to play them for a long time it becomes a lot easier to accept it when you are told you can't play them.

I've been playing for only about 2 years and I have made over 50 characters, all of which I know I wont be able to play for a long time, but I knew that from the start so it doesn't get me down
