I was hoping to gather some feedback regarding this character illustration I did! 🙂
I am currently doing character design studies (mostly in the fantasy / sword and sorcery sort of genre) and I would like to determine a few things with the help of some feedback from fellow artists but also whoever would like to let me know what they think! 😄

Firstly I would like to hear whether or not the style in general seems cohesive. Does anything stand out oddly? It is meant to be a somewhat western comic-book-like style. That is a fairly broad category I suppose, but I would like to have people think of it when looking at my illustrations! 🙂

Secondly, do you consider this to be of sufficient quality that it could be sold for around 100 $ / € as a commission?
(This would mean: A from-scratch character commission where I design the entire character based on the client's feedback)
If not, or just in general, do you have any advice for me to improve the quality of my character illustrations? 🙂

@torpid jay here’s an example of what I mean, this character is standing but look how they’re standing; their posture, expression, how they hold their sword, etc. just by looking you can tell this character is ready for battle and has seen their share of fights. Also, notice that even without a background they still feel like they’re standing on solid ground and they have weight and dimensionality. That would be my suggestion for you, take the basics that you know and push them to the next level. The more you draw the faster and more confident you’ll get.

Heya everybody! 😄

So I have taken feedback I received from the last illustration I posted seriously and tried to at least make some sort of progress / improvements with this next one! 🙂

I studied a certain celebrity's appearance (let me know if you can actually guess at who this might be!) and then drew up a portrait / bust illustration of her! 😄

I believe my linework is looking better this time as I have started using a new brush that made it easier to create smooth shapes and sharp tips for my lines! 🙂 Let me know if you agree! 😂

However I can definitely also already identify on my own where some serious issues and or smaller problems might be found...
The head to body proportions, general facial structure and expression, as well as the depiction of her hair in my illustration I would assume to be what needs the most work! 😅
Please do tell me if you agree or disagree (and how much). 🙂

Lastly, I was hoping to potentially make this type of portrait / bust illustration (specifically in this style) a commission option for when I eventually go independent and become a freelance digital artist! 🙂
I was thinking about roughly charging 65 to 75 $/€ for it, would you say that is reasonable or asking too much for the quality I delivered?

Army painter speed paints through an airbrush (although you can use a regular brush if you use a big one and apply smooth coats)

  1. Airbrush a layer of gloss varnish and let it dry (I use army painter air gloss varnish)
  2. Airbrush in your speed paints. Use a drop of flow improver to make the coats even. Allow to dry
  3. Airbrush a second gloss coat to seal

decided the new arm would replace the oldest arm instead of having the new arm replace the slightly less new arm. I also got a new leg, which isn't in the image, also it's under some orange baggy engineer pants so it wouldn't be seen anyway. I also got an uncommon magic item called a Psi Crystal by fusing together a bunch of the crystals that were inside the skulls of various unrepairable robots I found, and I replaced one of my eyes with it (the eye is just a png of the default art for the Psi Crystal)

It is odd, but makes 100% sense just as well. It's just a matter of accomplishing it when you've got a dry erase grid map vs something like dungeon tiles

I know a lot of people want a Tabletop with a built in TV, however I've been coming up with ideas for a metal tabletop with 2D terrain tiles printed with a fridge magnet type material, and 3d terrain with magnets embedded in the bottom.
Then minis with more powerful magnets under them. Something I'll definitely share here once I have it more put together.

A clever dhampir armorer I drew on commission recently!
Character: Lilah Haxus, Dhampir Armorer
Lilah was a young human artificer with her own shop, “New & Infused”, where she dealt in the repair, maintenance, and occasional creation of items both magic and mundane. She was talented in crafting arts but always looking to expand her repertoire.
Lillah’s ambition outweighed her skill on the night she experimented with a sample of aboleth slime she obtained from an adventuring customer, hoping to gain the complete knowledge of her ancestors like the aboleth have. Instead, she became a dhampir that hungers for psychic energy.
Naturally horrified by the result, she closed her shop, gathered her supplies and tools, and lastly, infused a set of scalemail armor into an infiltrator suit and a cloak into a cloak of elvenkind, relying on their speed and stealth properties to keep trouble from finding her as she quests for a cure.
Now, she’s grown to love the advantages being a dhampir offers like darkvision, speed, and spider-climbing but still wishes to stop craving psychic energy.

A cunning and charming sun elf tayu from our games in Theomachy!
Character: Lady Terferi, Sun Elf Bard and Tayu to the Shogun (and secretly a spy)
Deceptively innocent and stunningly charismatic, Lady Terferi was the most prestigious courtesan of the Shogun of Kuroi while serving as a diplomatic liaison and a spy on behalf of the elven nation of Per-Menoth.
Having spent decades mastering dancing, singing, calligraphy, poetry, flower arrangement, and a remarkable array of elven and draconic ceremonies, Lady Terferi spied on the Shogun and the black dragons he served while remaining completely beyond all suspicion.
The Shogun was deeply saddened when Lady Terferi disappeared from his palace without a trace about two decades ago. That day, almost all sun elves seemingly vanished in an event known as the Elven Exodus, with entire elven nations physically disappearing and leaving behind gaping craters brimming with uncontrolled magic.
About the Theomachy setting:
In Theomachy, vengeful gods fight each other for ultimate control of the universe, while the mortals of Naam struggle for power on a dying world. Divine magic is a force without expressed will that the warring gods hoard and wield against each other, threatening to undo the entire world. Clerics and paladins are either devout followers of the warring gods or theomachists who fight against the gods, liberating divine magic and using it against them.

A fantasy Viking Longboat I have been working on. The Dragon head is removable like they were on the real boats. I carved it from birch. I dyed the sail with batik die. The main hull is from scraps of wood leftover after I was building bee hives. I went authentic with the rigging as well. Still have some oars to carve and more crew to paint. Made to game scale of course!

Flosters are tiny florofauna critters from Cute Creatures Compendium, my latest book!

Creature Spotlight: Floster
Likes: stuffing its cheek pouches, playing with bees, pretending to be a flower
Dislikes: being indoors, loud sounds, predators
An adorable and unlikely fusion between a hamster and a flower, flosters are tiny critters that delight to play among flowers. Their benign magic allows flosters to create flowers on the ground and directly on their backs, and they love to see and smell each other’s flowers.
Calm and docile, a floster will run away and either burrow on the ground or hide among flowers at the sight of danger. If it’s scared, a floster can pretend to be a flower for hours at a time.
Familiar. At the gamemaster’s discretion, a player character who can cast find familiar may choose the form of a floster for their familiar.
Awakened Flosters. Flosters are eligible targets for the awaken spell. Awakened flosters might seek to study botany or become floral designers. When awakened, flosters are typically very gentle and polite, and have remarkably high-pitched voices.

A unique thri-kreen monk I drew recently!
Character: Taka'tel, Thri-kreen Astral Monk
Taka'tel was a nomad who encountered an unfortunate event that transformed his life. While traveling, he was dragged into the astral sea. There, he encountered a green dragon that had been chosen to be a piece of the hoard of a powerful astral creature who ended up taking both Taka’tel and the dragon into its collection.
After living together in captivity for a while, Taka’tel and the green dragon came to an agreement to aid each other in escaping. Their plan was successful, and they were shunted back to the material plane. However, the journey across the planes had bonded them forever and the time spent in the Astral Sea had changed Taka’tel. He was now able to manifest an astral form in the shape of the green dragon bonded to him.
With his newfound freedom and powers, what will Taka'tel do now?

A fun artificer I drew along with four other party members a while ago!
Character: Weslan Hartwood, Human Artificer
Firstborn son and heir apparent to the Hartwood Technical Solutions workshop, Wes always had a charmed life where he could focus on tinkering with his own ideas and machines. Big on ideas but short in patience, he can often cause explosions of the unexpected variety wherever he happens to be working. After challenging his father, a master craftsman to see if he could take over the workshop and being completely outclassed, Wes took his father’s advice to travel and grow from necessity over time and experience. His companion is Accel, the homunculus servant he created as part of the challenge with his father, who seems to be sharing his personality more and more, though she is a little more of a prankster.

As a general rule, craft paint should not go through the airbrush, the pigment is typically too big/ coarse.
Paint sets can be rough, because many will already have a preferrance.

I'm favoring Reaper MSP most days. Vallejo is praised across a few continents.
Army Painter seems to be up to personal preference. Scale75 has good reviews and TurboDork has some unique colors.

hello! I'm making a dnd map and some assets, and i have some image scale questions

actually lemme write this out first haha

alright so I've made a canvas and grid at 300 dpi and tested it- it works fine! each square is 1 inch and i was able to mark out how much of a margin my printer cuts off (its a lot, frustratingly)
however, I'm using 2 Minute Tabletops as a reference for scale as well- and I'm noticing that their sizes are very different

if i were to upscale their map by two, their grid would be printing at the right size, but it seems like i would be setting their map scale entirely out of wack?

they use 150 dpi- so yeah upscaling to print is the intended way to go. i also found out i can specify a DPI and then use inches as my unit of measurement in CSP! which makes it a lot easier to make sure things are at the right physical size

in addition, the one i was working with was an older piece from that artist and didnt follow their standard scale yet

#

but i found a recent map with really clear gridlines in the terrain and used it to test and get it all configured right!

yeah fair- I do want to make sure that the proportions are a bit closer to shorter bodies irl and less of just 5'4 human shrunk down tho. so yeah a lil! not quite dwarf levels of stocky but probably a tad closer to tall for a hobbit/halfling
