I quite like the lineup of classes at my tables, 6 full casters, 6 martials, and 4 half casters, nice clean number
Charisma Full Caster :)
But sorcerer
Adding another to the huge pile? I actually wouldn't mind that
Yeah
Bard, warlock and sorcerer, the charismatic trio of casters
Give me Charisma or give me death
Insert millions of chairs meme
Oh yeah charismas the biggest spell focus stat
people constantly ask for 4e Warlord in 5e, I figure you could make a second Fighter
Men in black suit up meme
+paladin for 4. I'm sure we can do with a few more
-# I added another, my Battleblood class uses charisma
Spiderman point at each other meme
Eldritch knight charisma caster when
Ok thats enough.
Need more Charisna casters
How were they
At this point I've stopped being afraid of new martial classes being "something that can just be a fighter subclass" because that can go for so many of the other classes
Bards are amazing, Sorcerers are amazing, Warlocks are amazing, Paladins are... paladins are okay I guess
So yeah, more "second fighters" is something I am up for too
What you say
I will end you
They're okay
-# You are entitled to your opinion and I can respect it
They're like a 6/10
But lack of subjective wording wounds me
"I didn't make him for you!"
They are amazing too, for me
Maybe if I get to it I can build another paladin
-# In fact, they are so amazing to me that they're my favourite class
wont compare at all casters with hybrids
Maybe I'll make John Farmer into a Paladin
Warlock is nice, different playstyle
Sorc is funny, can do so funny things with hte spells
Bard is a meme, love it too
Restrain my hands before i get the greatsword (jk you can like whatever you want)
it wasnt a fighter?
Is the arcane archer fighter subclass really even worth playing folks?
Although fr I find all classes amazing
-# I am not talking about optimising, and even then none of them are "bad" unless either the player or DM is messing something up
They were a fighter, that's why I said maybe
Supposedly not, but I don't care I love the feel
I just prefer spellcasting, yup
Well, don't get me wrong, Valor Bard is also fantastic
I honestly think ranger isnt THAT bad. They do their job just fine
And that's valid! And I appreciate the wording here
Ranger is amazing at low levels
Rangers are peak and I will die on this hill
I was gonna argue that they're good at high levels too but I ain't getting into an optimising debate
No no, my opinions are the utter truth and everyone has the same opinions as I do >:( /j
Right?
There we are, that's more like it! /j
Should I make a Paladin?
I never realized paladins were quite hated tbh. Or rather disliked. Not targeted to you echo
okey okey
I think if you don't like them, you don't have to
if not a barbarian
Then again... Sorcerers... Fighters... bards.
I wanna try 'em, you never know
My mind might change
I actually think that the majority of dnd players are positive about it, I just think the negative people are more vocal
I suppose they just dont like being goody two shoes
John Farmer as a Paladin... hehe
I'm starting to believe that about a lot of dnd opinions. I've seen many other small servers, and many people irl, and tbh I have never once seen any of the negative consesuses I've seen here and on reddit and youtube
Thing is, the 5e paladin is a different beast. In previous editions however, horror stories often involved a paladin
My friend who had been playing for almost ten years wasn't even aware that people online talk about a "martials and casters divide"
There's a relatively complex history, often including baby orcs.
So I've heard. Iirc, they had to be lawful good?
Holy hell
Paladins also unfortunatley dont have the best rep cuz of SOME people
I've never actually had my character die before
The result was that the paladin was... Basically a killjoy, and DMs often created situations designed to make the paladin break their oath
Tbh if every class was held to their stereotypes they'd all be terrible
Who knows, maybe John Farmer is gonna sacrifice himself at a great battle (like a true paladin)
The only class I've seen that doesn't have an inherently annoying and negative stereotype is fighter from what I've seen
The only one I know is "Oh the Human Fighter? How generic."
Honestly 3.5 classes with the ex class is brutal especially with the monk
What do yall think of the summon spells like summon fey or undead
They're okay
I like them but apprently they're either mid or bad
fun but preferred the old conjure animals
But Idc
I say screw optimal and pick what you find fun
-# Although ofc there can be some overlap, it is valid to enjoy optimising
What's a good name for a Farmer...
I want to take one but idk if its worth it over other spells as a warlock
-# I am not saying it's invalid to enjoy optimising I'm just saying that I think it's bad to discourage choices that people might find fun for the sake of power
Don John N. Duragon
Darryl
I'm laughing at my own stupid joke
It was a peak joke
Farmer John
John Farm
Full name Don John N. Duragon, "But my friends call me John."
Perfect
need a hidden dragon NPC in your game? just name their humanoid alter "john dragon." nobody would expect the guy named dragon to actually be a dragon, it's too obvious
Oath of Vengeance against frackers
oath of devotion to the plants
oath of the ancients, self explanatory
Oath of Glory, they want to make their ma and pa proud
oath of the noble genie, they have to make a monthly feast for their genie patron
Oath of the Ancients
I kinda... did that, but with a Hydra. I named the guy "Avydra", pronounced "Ahv-eye-dra"
peak
And the player's didn't even realise until he finally revealed his true form š
I don't... I don't get it... I'm stupid
I thought for sure they would have clocked it after the second meeting
Oath of the ancients is the druid-themed subclass
Paladins who swear this oath cherish the light; they love the beautiful and life-giving things of the world more than any principles of honor, courage and justice. They often adorn their armor and clothing with images of growing things - leaves, antlers, or flowers - to reflect their commitment to preserving life and light.
Okay! Thank you
Oathbreaker, they stopped being devoted to go live a peaceful life /j
also plant growth at level 9
Now that I think about it I should finish both classes so they can be used in t3 and 4
Hi i,m new
hello
I,m doing a campaing so does anybody want to play
It feels so wrong to have 8 dex
So does anyone want to play my campaing
We have channels for that Dzan
Ok sry i,m new
Are Conquest paladins hard to set up?
in what sense?
Define āset upā
I definitely recommend looking over the LFG channels. There are pinned posts in there explaining how to post.
Oh thanks
Just be advised, this is a busy server, so theyāre not designed expecting that youāre gonna find the perfect players in a couple hours, youāre gonna have to look over the responses that people send you and make sure they fit who youāre looking for.
Alot of people dont read posts either so its good to include some kinda unique question if you're a dm
Just wanted to give you a heads up. Youād be surprised how many people come into the LFG channels and expect to find the perfect group in 5 minutes lol
if only it were so simple
Yeah, get ready for a lot of āIām interestedā with no further info
When are you planning on running sessions?
Also may be a good idea to take planning into DMs
First time playing Human Paladin that doesn't use Dex... I'm so afraid of this 8 Dex
Not to be a āmĆnimodā, but they generally donāt like it when people are coordinating campaigns outside of the LFG channels or DMs.
Got it
you're afraid of your initiative?
or the dex saves?
Negative initiate can be funny when you end up with a -2
I mean you can repair it a bit with alert
What is that i,m from bosnia i,m learning english
Yup
"Hey dude, I know you're first in initiative and I decided to play a low dex character... but uhhh, would you mind like, scooting over a bit down the initiative order? Yeah, thanks!"
Iāve played characters who prefer going on the lower end of the initiative scale, so I donāt mind a lower Dex character unless the Dex affects my AC
Nahh it's fine, I'm embracing the paladin
It's the only Charisma caster that I don't like
I forgot about this, I was only thinking of the +5
Who knows, this might be my first character that dies
It's pretty funny if you duo with someone who doesn't care about initiative order but has high dex
This is why find familiar is so good to pair with alert too
Get a high DEX familiar and you basically have advantage on initiative rolls
yeah but I haven't seen anyone who doesn't like acting first
i think low initiative is ok. because either in 2014 most monsters have mid initative bonuses so its not that hard to compete or its 2024 and 98% of monsters above CR 10 have initiative expertise and youre not gonna move before they do
Holy hell, 16 AC with 8 Dex is insane, martials are scary
I mean
what armour do you have
Chain Mail, of course, I know how it works, still, I'm not used to heavy armor as I mainly play casters
oh
how much damage woul da nuke even do in dnd 5e
Woah, what's the design principle behind making monsters act first?
its not that fun if they die before they can go
Heavy armor gives disadvantage on stealth
A worthy price to pay for brick wall
Mm, true. I guess they're really against burst damage in 5.5e
I'll let my presence known alright.
later down the game you can always get mithral armour
They will rue the day they messed with John Farmer
and use heavy armor
I know I just said a worthy price to pay for brick wall but I love mithral armour
Brick wall with no cost? Happy times
Brick wall good. But shiny brick wall?
My ST players have been getting absolutely done in by rats
Or if you get enough gold have an enchanted armor that won't give you disadvantage on stealthing. Maybe buy some
They really hate rats at this point
I wanna try lady bombs
Make one a wererat
Nah these rats are already so obnoxious
Bite one of the players and infect them with Rat lycanthropy
They explode when they die and can kill other rats with said explosions making a chain reaction of exploding rats
My players are terrified of them
oh my... so despicable.
I've really been enjoying the whole "monsters are proficient or Experts in Initiative"
Should've had Spirit Guardians
I like it
For a 1v5, a mini boss having two initiatives isn't that crazy, right?
Do some let out a poisons gas on top of exploding?
The Fighter is hesitant to use his Flametongue Greatsword because he's liable to one shot a rat and start a chain reaction of rat explosions
the terrain they explode on becomes difficult terrain and deals damage over time
Do it, coward
I mean, 1v5
The Ratsplosion
Rat SPlosion
I echo'ed your words.
It's also despicable because these rats are appearing inside of commoners' homes and the commoners are extremely unlikely to survive the rat explosions
Take the rat explosion head on. Never back down. Till death do us part
As they do 2d4 acid damage on the explosion, and do 1d6+3 and 2d4 acid damage on a bite to begin with
kamikaze rats entering through your walls
2d4 that's nothing
They're level 3
;-;
And haven't long rested in a while
You heard me
oh, 3 you say ;-;
That's like two 2014 vicious mockeries
Taking 2d4 10+ times in one long rest is a lot for a level 3 party
What are you on about
Have the cleric work overtime... if there is a cleric?
So exhaustion levels?
If not then yeah, it's joever
There's not
RIP
And the ratsplosions do half damage on a successful save
so average of 5 damage on a success that's 3 and times 10, so 30 damage in a turn
damn
Not in a turn
The rats are not guaranteed to die in one hit
They have enough health to survive a hit or two but once they die they pop
The rats? Around 18
So why not just have someone fireball them chain explosion away
Surprisingly durable for explosive rats.
Because these rats are appearing in commoners' homes
Ah
You can't just fireball a commoners home when you're playing in good faith and aren't treating the game like an elder scrolls game
Bah, the exploding rats are going to ruin their house anyway.
Banelings
Then pickup the rats and turn them into your pets. Send them into bbeg area and use them that way
The rats are ||already being controlled by someone||
The ||Pied Piper||
Yeah, and the rats can easily kill the commoners
Ah
I will not fall for this.
I know the word game is behind that spoiler tag
||Truer than you might think||
How do you add the blank tag thing?
By doing this text border || ||
Put || on either side of the text you want censored
A first level spell slot.
Can I upcast it
Sadly no
I think Illusory Script might be one of the worst picks with Magic Initiate low-key
One spell I love is silvery barbs
Here we go again.
Shield>
I like suggestion
It goes
Shield
Absorb Elements
Dissonant Whispers
I'd rather my players take Silvery Barbs over Suggestion any day
Or when the bard kills the enemy with vicious mockery
Illusory script is good for RP things. But yea
I mean if you want the fun spell its modify memory
Rare
2014 it was a D4, 2026 it's now a D6
Still a good spell reguardless. Gives enemy disadvantage on attack rolls and saves if it fails
Until their next turn
So far my favorite bard class is dancer
Both spells suck to be on the receiving end of
And the thing is dm can use it to. Just like the whole circle soell thing can go either way
That's why I say the receiving end a player most definitely is gonna hate getting hit by a suggestion just as much as the DM
Just as enemies can counterspell you
WeeFee
|I want to commit great warcrimes|
how does one make an ad for a campaign?
Hello tasha
Instructions in #find-a-game
@chilly pine
Hey Iām new to dnd and I recently made a lil binder with my characters is there anything I should get like spells or monster cards that would help me is it all unnecessary
I almost had a character die last session I did
You should ask the dm!
Dnd beyond is a good app, usually the small cards are good for character stats for dms yo hold onto with your own sources. Keep a relationship page, good notes, and what you have in your inventory
Dm doesnt track those for you. If you didn't write it down it didn't happen, and history checks dont always roll well
Now there's an actual bot
Use the alert mod function to report ^.^
Yup already did
Thank you mods!
Yo yall think i could play mayo as an instrument for my bardic art?
Im sure you can, but check up with your dm
Spongebob joke, yeah yeah, as the other guy said, you'd have to check up with your DM
Didnt know people can set up bots. Nor do I know how ti
Just partner up with someone name your characters dirty dan and pinhead larry
Itāll probably be funny the first 0.5 times you bring it up, after that itāll wear off
Yeah
I think instruments of torture would be better /ref
If you set it up to be a joke it won't be fun
Thatās the problem with joke characters
Iād rather use latte art
They get old after 2 or 3 sessions
Joke characters work only for one shots. Any longer than that and it drives me nuts
Eh im sure itll be alright for a joke campaign
I'd lose my marbles, all ten of them
Could go a bit more versatile with cooking utensils like that one muppet
Damn thats alotta marbles
Does anyone know any books you can buy on beyond with good ranger spells?
Understandable ofc ofc
Generic ranger spells or... Roaring Knight inspired spells?
Your primary weapon is a cast iron pan
If so, probably go to third party
Hold up bard chef goes hard
Cooking is sometimes considered as art
Iām not wondering about third party stuff, Iām asking about official DnD books on DnD beyond
Not even joking
It's always considered art
Bard Ross
Hmm yeah i suppose
Nevdr done a bard chef
Granted im about to be using my first bard here soon. My primary and first class is berserker barbarian
the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects. Food is art
Though i have multiple classes set up for just in case one dies and doesnt unbalance a party
Also, might I ask, what do you know of Bards?
People gotta eat so bard chef makes sense
Hopefully you haven't consumed misinformation created by content creators.
Beautiful. I shall now cook an omellete to persuade a shopkeep into giving me 50% off on a potion
Not much actually
Right there, that's what I'm talking about
First off, Persuasion isn't mind control.
Well aware that
most of their good spells are in the core books, xge has absorb elements tho
You can certainly try, though youll likely be thrown out if you do that
The crazier the thing snd the more against something is increases the DC. Also if its a absolute no can be kicked out instantly
Yeah, sorry, just frustrated at content farms
Content farms?
I was about to say, the PHB Ranger spells are solid
Theres those in dnd?
Never heard of content farms
Which core books? Pretty sure only have ones from the PHB
One-shot Questers
Played level 20 Ranger once and holy hell did I rain down a hammering of swords and arrows for ages
They reuse the same stereotypical jokes about D&D classes over and over again.
OOOOOH i see
Then I ran out of spell slots :(
hi amity :3
Bards being seductive and vicious mockery dealing 300 trillion damage
Oath of throwing it back Paladin, etc.
Hi Wings :D
unfortunate consequence of half casters but yeah rangers essentially just got the good half of the druid list lol
"I Nat 20'd on the vicious mockery"
yeah i really hate these too
I suppose thats not something you just do?
Very true, Iām glad it at least got good spells
It's a saving throw
You don't roll to hit. The enemy rolls to save.
Oh that makes sense
You can't crit on a vicious mockery
I like classes for different reasons. Full on spell casters I just struggle with
Like a breath attack?
And Vicious Mockery deals dogwater damage
Yeah, I suppose
2014 it was a D4, 2024 now it's a D6 which is still not a lot
Vicious mockery shines with until the next turn disadvantage on saves and attacks until their next turn
im a filthy optimizer so i always tend towards casters
i think martials are really cool though
I mean, you can kill commoners with one vicious mockery if you roll max damage but still
Just pair scry with transport via pants
Power Word kill at home
Honestly im loving dnd so far, cant wait to do my first campaign this summer
yeah its a while away but im probably gonna start a bunch of campaigns once uni ends for the year
The only type of campaign I can see bad deeds but also harder times coming is running an evil campaign
I will NEVER run an evil campaign.
Best part of bard is lvl10 or whatever when they get access to many casters spell list
Hey about vicious mockery, what stat do you use in saving throws?
You can't believe how many people misinterpret "evil" as "outright harm your party members"
Wisdom, Charisma strenght. Any of them really
Don't see it as harm your party members or everyone you see
the bard spell list in general is really sad ngl š
Itās a wisdom saving throw
And Magical Secrets is NOT helping
Level 10 feature... š
My friend has terrorised me with enough bard shenanigans for me to politely disagree
its just kinda too little too late
What they lack in damage, they make up for causing chaos
Okay Laufey
And damage
Also is the artificer stereotype any accurate? Can you really build a huge bomb with enough preparation?
id say they have the weakest spell list tbh but its not entirely devoid of good options yeah
Valor Bard for the win
no lol
No. Not at all
Depends on what you call "bomb", but usually, no.
I understand
Glamor has some interesting feats to
There isnāt even a demolitions themed subclass
If itās a stereotype of a class, itās most likely wrong
Fireball is generally enough
Best I can do is Twin Spell Fireball
artis can do a lot of cool stuff but you dont get to just conjure up futuristic technology or anything like people think
Taking note of that
You could maybe have a barrel full of oil or something. Though thats gonna be really heavy
any class can have that lol
Another thing you should take note of is that you will likely disagree with every opinion of dnd you will see online. I encourage you to always find your own opinion on it
True
Are sorcerer stereotypes that far off?
if anything wizard or bard is what youre looking for but pretty much no dm is gonna let you make a bomb with minor conjuration
I donāt actually know sorcerer stereotypes
Yeah ive already seen a couple
Neither
i dont think they have one
Nepo babies?
Well canāt be off if they donāt have one
sorcerer character or player sterotypes?
Oh yeah I forgot about that
Class
Then yeah theyāre a lil off
What exatly are sorcerers? Can yall explain?
just nepotism off the top of my head, then
They were born with magic
magic powers through bloodline, one way or another
An individual who was born with innate magic and have the ability to augment their spells through metamagic
Shadow kai
Wizards have to study for magic
Sorcerers get it from birth
Oh i see
Which is why Sorcerers are better than Wizards /j
and warlocks are either pawns of a greater power or a deity just really likes em
Sorcerers can also get it from magical incidents or something else that has magically influenced their blood, soul, or mind
True, itās just magic that has become ingrained in their being
I once had a lunar sorcerer who got his powers from a holy shard of the moon that pierced his heart during prayer one night
Selune chose it for him so he could channel her moonās magic and do good, etc
Alright one last question. I was planning on playing rouge swashbuckler for my first dnd campaign you think thats an alright class for a beginner?
Swashbuckler is fun
I think my DM leans too far into the "Are you sure you wanna do that?" like in a way where no I just can't justify doing it anymore when you're gonna say it like that
Itās decent
The DM made this lore not me. I just wanted to be stabbed by the moon
It also makes getting sneak attacks simpler, so itās decent for newbies
Rogues are always fun to play
Screw optimisation we ballinā
Thatās a sentence I didnāt expect to read today
thats so peak actually
Where can I ask my questions about D&D?
Do it anyways and see what happens. Poke the bear with a stick
wow ok i see how it is /silly
Depends on the question
optimize flavor
Right here
Newbie questions, rules questions, or other?
Aww okay, a little bit of optimisation
Depends on the character though what they'd do in scenarios
yippee :3
On what basis should I choose a race? History or class ?
flavor
choose whichever race seems cooler pretty much
⦠fun? Idk, what would you treasure most?
I pick based off of āwhat do I want to look like and do today?ā
That'd all on you and making sure the character fits the setting. Dm doesnt make your character for you
Can say yes or no when it comes to vustom campaign things thkugh
Oh oky thank you
Plus different races have different features
I pick off vibes, or a specific playstyle or feature I want
there's mechanically "better" races when optimizing, but not enough that it's worth throwing out playing whatever you feel like
Paladin with Great Weapon Fighting + Savage Attacker for the first one I'll actually play
personally i end up playing a fair few humans but its not my fault 5e has three different really good variants :3
You really donāt want to roll low on damage huh
I dont really optimize. I just go with ehat I want my character to look like. Half orc paladin, barbarian, or fighter is good though
And yeah i generally play humans
Should I design my own Artificer weapon?
if your dm is fine with it
You can, as long as it doesnāt give you an unfair mechanical benefit
The judge if itās fair would be your DM
dragonmarks are really cool and sometimes a bit busted lol
I dont like gnomes. Halflings, human, half orc and some other species I dont mind. Also love dragonborn
He's a farmer boy
all my campaigns have been non-eberron and all of them don't allow dragonmarks š
Dragon marks?
I really liked the D&D community. Nobody treated me badly or harshly.š„¹
Thx ā¤ļø
im in a wild beyond the witchlight campaign rn and im feylost so i have an excuse to have been in eberron :3
i can change that >:) /silly
Dnd community is fun. Just gotta find the right group and dm. Sometimes all align, and other times portions fo and others don't
I allow everything in my games unless its my setting
Then theres species restrictions
It's a welcoming community, there's just a few bad experiences here and there but overall, quite fun
so you're telling me your backstory is just a long petition to use dragonmarks? /j i hope is obvious
No thx
the background pretty much is lol most of my backstory happened at the carnival
I see.
i wanted to play a dragonmark and went "yeah this fits in the lore perfectly yippee"
And session 0 is good for setting boundaries of dos and do nots between players and dm for that campaign
Internet is down, im having to use pen and paper like a caveman š /joking
I wonder if you'll get far enough to get boon of siberys
-# if the DM even allows it lol
This is the downside of not having physical books
Never seen the boons
nah its 5e lol
Boon of Speed always
and witchlight ends at like level 9
I have the important books for sure
Ive done 5, 5.5, and the other name is evading me now that I need it
Never done other ttrpg. And not to much into futuristic stuff
I wonder if I can flavor a longsword/greatsword into a shovel
Iāve done 5e, 5.5e, Pathfinder 1e, Cyberpunk Red, Eureka and Call of Cthulhu
And yet I always find myself coming back to dnd
I love Flavor
Pathfinder is it
It just scratches an itch none of the others do
Pathfinder counts as another TTRPG doesnāt it
Itās alright. But I avoid playing it online bc some of the fans are insufferable
It does
If its not pathfinder then its one of dnd different realms
Scratch that - most, Iād say
But I canāt deny, itās still very fun. And it being free is a big bonus
ive had a bit of a go at it but i definitely like dnd more
Same
Although Call of Cthulhu hit hard. Like god DAYUM it was fun.
-# Still prefer dnd
I like the versatility of groups and how different characters interact. The story portion is fun. I give dms a lot of credit. Especially when you have to improvise and everything else
Of the other games Iāve tried, Iām not enough of a theatre kid for daggerheart, and mothership is something to play every now and then, DnD I feel I can always return to
With the right group, dnd is peak TTRPG for me
āThe right groupā is the hard part :P
Man I really wanna play Daggerheart, but thatās because I love Matt Mercer
Yup
yeah from what ive heard about daggerheart the rules are pretty much "haha its freeform roleplay have fun"
I thankfully have the best players in the world, no question
No, I do! /j
-# It is very good to hear that the both of us have found groups that we love
Daggerheart is definitely less mechanics more roleplay, it has less appeal for my optimizing self
-# I am very happy for you and wish the same happiness for everyone else
yeah same :3
Ive heard of daggerheart. Never looked into it
It's why I'm scared of running a second game, what if that group is... less than delightful
Thereās always gonna be bad players. Just set some boundaries and do your best, and youāll see how it goes
Iām sure daggerheart is perfect for all the theatreheads similar to the CR cast, just not for me
2 of our people are kill them and not find another way if possible
My good friend that I havenāt seen in a bit asked if I would joint their campaign. He said theyāre trying for weekly/every other week. ššš¼ Iāve only been in monthly sessions up to this point. I canāt believe itās happeningš
Yup
Monthly sessions? Oh my
That is wonderful to hear! I hope it goes well!
id say dont count your eggs until they hatch
but yeah sounds great
Itās been super consistent and has gone on for two years now. Weāve had some months with two sessions. But my heart is never satisfied š¤·š¼āāļø
Curse of Strahd so far has not been as difficult as people always make it out to be and I don't know if it's my DM nerfing it or what
But I was kinda hoping my character would be dead by now
If the players play pretty competently and respect the danger its not that hard
I sometimes see the module throw out very easy encounters... so I crank up the CR
I turned a cr 1/2 encounter into a CR 8 encounter
Our party is Beast Barbarian, Thief Rogue, Scout Rogue, Dance Bard (me), Spirits Bard, and Necromancer Wizard
I think the thing is a lot of people dont read and make very dumb mistakes which makes CoS punish them unlike other modules.
i do think while it is very "freeform roleplay" i find that its procedures are much more structured than that of 5e and I think it owes it alot to how it's largely inspired by PbtA and BitD
It's when you get to the consequences of your actions that it starts to kick in
I wonder if running Tomb of Horrors for my group has inadvertently made every other module easier because now they're always super careful
Oh yeah, that's probably it
ye Daggerheart being more "freeform" doesnt stop it from having some pretty good structure
I had a lot of fun playing DH but at the end of the day I came back to dnd 5e
Has some parts in the corebook you can use for any game not just daggerheart too
Also my Dance Bard has been getting crazy Heroism value in CoS
Dance bard is so much fun
Im excited to use mine
anything non-combat related in 5e is chalked up to somr arbitrary half-baked skill check most of the time while Daggerheart makes it a point to make this kind of thing a conversation/negatiation between GM and player
Another player?
I am so glad my DM wasnāt running CoS when she revealed that my characterās grandfather was Strahd
I am still horrified though
Oh my.
Tho that might be the below freezing temperature in late april
YEAH
Damn so Strahd succeeded in that?
Looking forward tonight
What is with DMs and letting the player characters be blood relatives of major figures both in the module and the lore
Yikes... I do not like the implications
I think my DM said it was with another bride and no spoilers
Am I wild for thinking that's crazy?
Ok
No no Dw I was nervous about it too but my DM cleared it up
Although I plan on nerfing the magic resistance of yuan ti to one or twice per long reat
Rest
I'm not sure
it gives the PC an immediate stake and relevance in the story so I don't see anything wrong with it inherently
Idk. Itās strange.
It's your character
Did you ask for this to be the case or did the DM drop this on you as a twist?
I just wanted to make a dhampir barbarian
Dropped it as a twist
That's a lot more reasonable to me then
My PCās father was a vampire called Victor, but then it was revealed that Victor is the lost son of Strahd
One of our players lost their memory and the dm knows what they forgot. History comes here and there
Because I'm sitting here thinking if my player asked me "Can I be related to Strahd?" That's a stiff "no" right there.
I wouldn't want to be related to strahd
Absolutely jaw dropped during the session when my PC uncovered the old painting of her father and standing behind him was Strahd
How do you think I feel?!?! š /lhj
Oh and it turns out my PC has a half sister so Iām gonna find her bc I do not want our horrific tyrants of a father and grandfather to find her first
Y'all think Bestow Curse was a good choice for my Bard
wdym?
oh for CoS, i see
I am scared of the DM having Strahd appear
Amity clarified that they didn't ask for that
It was the DMs idea
While the lore is strange, I canāt deny my DM pulled off the twist well
It is a orwtty good twist
I'm still wondering how the DM is gonna work my CoS character's mother into the plot
Maybe she's been dead for years
āHey mum, Iām homeā
I'm a Reborn
Ive seen a spell that will let you be reborn, your character type is rolled on a d10 or 12 and that race becomes the traits you have
Not familiar with reborna
That's Reincarnate
I love Reborn
I mean that is the point of him.
I have a Reborn player
I promise itās not because it let me okay as general Grievous from Star Wars
Reborn is a pseudo undead race where your character has been reanimated by one means or another
Right? Iām just waiting for it to fall through at this point. But Iām hopeful!!
True. But Iām extra scared bc that mofo is my grandfather
I don't see how Reborn works for Grievous
Do you know of his lore? /genq
He's the million dollar alien
Just ask grandpa for gold, and gifts for all the years he's neglected you
I was thinking a lot between Reborn and warforged, but reborn has the option to be quite robotic and I thought it fit grievous more considering he was once flesh and years of combat and losing parts do his body led to him being rebuilt
Sick robot who got his ribs crushed by Sam Jackson
IIRC
i have been trying to work in family npcs into backstories more in the past couple games im in
last game my PC was an old man with adult children, and it was cool to see them show up
that game is over and i did get surprised when the guardian spirit fey that i imagined to be a little bit suspicious being actually really chill and also just an uber giant displacer beast
Star Wars fans, kill me if Iām wrong
Grievous isn't a robot he's like Vader where he's a living biological being with a mostly mechanical body due to the horrible injuries he's sustained
He's just like, 90% machine
Uh oh, they're all sharing art of their characters already and I haven't commissioned an artist yet
Time to find an artist
Oh well, how hard is it to find a muscular farm boy with a cheerful personality
I think Pokemon has that
Yep
He gots fleshy bits still
A robocop situation
I got a farmer fairy with druid of the Shepard background, and tough
Crunchy robot exterior with a gooey alien filling
Farmer Paladin
Oath of the Ancients
Yup
I think reborn fits that. Mostly just the rebuilt vibes
Havnt looked to much into paladins yet to know the different types of oaths
I could see reborn or Warforged
Or Thrikeen if the multiple arms is really important to you
Warforged is eberon yes?
Yeah
Yep
I want to make a dungeon
But don't have any ideas
I want it to be a brutal dangerous dungeon
Could do a fun house dungeon
Have the whole dungeon be a mimic
Just has a wild variety of monsters and encounters
Housing monsters to protect it
I've played in that before
It's fine but not something I wanna try myself
Use super simple puzzles that they'll over complicate
I'd rather have insta kill traps
A lot of folks dislike "Oops, you died." stuff.
Poison gas in small hallway or could have fun with one rhat mentally messes with them
Yeah but my players really loved Tomb of Horrors
And I kinda wanna make something like that
Hallucinations
Rotating dungeons can be neat. Where the rooms are rearranging themselves.
And there are better ways to do it then "You failed, you die, lol. "
Naturally
Kill them softly
You know Tomb of Horrors doesn't actually really have any insta kill traps that don't heavily telegraph themselves
Could always make them have to fight themselves, or maybe the enemies take forms of those they love
Or are closest to
Trauma
Tomb of Horrors was so freaking hilarious
The things that really hurt the players the most weren't things that were instakills
Nwcer heard of tomb of horrors
I think the Altar in the Chapel of Evil and the scary key really debilitated them the most out of anything
And the fight with Acererak almost killed all of them
Mind control someone to see allies as enemies after they lose enough sanity if they fail continuous saves or nat 1
It's definitely not something you drop on the players without them knowing what it is
Banshees though. Those ones cr level is crazy for what they can do
I told my players ahead of time that this dungeon is dangerous and will trick them and will pull some serious BS on them
And they had fun going into it with that expectation in mind as level 14 characters
Creates good moments
I cant remember the name if the monster. I know theres one that can steal a person's strenght
Undead are nasty if you dont have paladins or a holy person
The intention of it is to thwart PCs that the players think are infallible
Gygax made it for his players who super optimized the game
Ill be honest I know I can die at any point. Even to simple things if done wrong
Not really from what I experienced running it and watching them play through it
Players who take their time and are careful will generally be fine
Plus certain enemies can be surprising
It's only a gotcha if you run in bullishly treating it like a normal dungeon
Sphynx tyoe puzzles confuse me. Bad with riddles
Sphynx
Things I'd recommend taking into the Tomb of Horrors:
10ft pole
Find Familiar
Detect Magic
More than one Strength based PC
Rary's Telepathic Bond
Earplugs
Yeah that word
An Enspelled Magic item with a summoning spell
So many letters sound the same lol
So if there is a trap you have the summon check
And if there is a fight the Summon can do something
And wonāt have to wait an hour each use of Find Familiar
There's really not a lot of fights, but some of them that there are can be kinda tough
Acererak almost TPKed my players
Also an Enspelled item of Create water
Because water can find you traps and illusions and hidden doors
And would have if not for the Wizard ||casting Teleport which he only had because they wished for the Efreeti to level them up||
Acererak goes first: Howl
Whole party except Wizard fails their saves and drops to 0 HP
Wait why create water when I can say a decanter of endless water
Wizard teleports entire party to other side of dungeon where they desperately spend the next few rounds trying to reset before he reaches them
Isn't swimming normally a difficult point to?
Really made it feel like a horror sequence as the whole dungeon rumbled and Acereraks disembodied groans echoed throughout it
As he got closer and closer
There is no way you are making that much water
The one class without healing magicš
That they stayed in the dungeon is nuts
Gotta get that loot
They teleported to the small room that ||the fake Acererak|| is in
If litteraly everyone but you drops to 0 instantly at the start of a fight, that's a sign to GTFO and NOT stick around
It was hilarious
They manage to pick themselves up and reset and heal a bit and cast their buffs and they're sitting there terrified waiting for Acererak to come around the corner
He does so
Immediately soul traps the Wizard and takes him out of the fight for the rest of the fight
And all the fear that they had from being taken to 0 HP by him is right back to full as the Wizard who just rescued them all fails one save and is taken out of initiative entirely
Notably teleport cannot leave a Demilichās lair
You can go to the front door tho
It was probably the most climactic ToH Acererak fight that's ever been had
Acererak had mad aura
It's always fun when the players are actually terrified of the boss
Like they had made it this far, 4 sessions and they were finally at the very end of the Tomb of Horrors
And Acererak immediately establishes that he is no joke
There are definitly monsters that scare me or not knowing what they can do
I rolled a natural 1 and had my soul ripped from my body straight to 0 hp
I should run ToH again for different players
See if they have an easier or harder time
It sounds like fun to go through
My players got to the end and beat it without dying but it was NOT an easy time by any means
I really found it funny when they spent like 20 minutes of real time in one session hiding in a closet from a key that they were scared of
it is not usually lol
I couldn't be trusted in ToH as a player
Why's that?
I'd willingly run into every trap.
I can finally chat after 1 year of trying to verify š
A lot of YouTubers make videos about how ToH is totally unfair and terrible in every way all the time, but those YouTubers also tend to get stuff wrong about it
Ah. I'd like to try it
Thing is it depends on the party and how they go through a dungeon for what happens. Actions have consequences and rewards
I play to what my character would do even if I wouldn't naturally do it
I actually never been in a campaign before
I can definitely see it being way harder for certain party comps than others
Usually if you dont have a set magic user bards are good to cover that gap at least. Granted the 2 i know who love to play bards never play them to what they can do
The adventure was designed from the ground up to defeat "unkillable" parties. Gary Gygax kept receiving mail from exasperated DMs whose players had defeated Thor and took Mjolnir and killed Demogorgon and wears his heads as shoulder pads, the DMs were complaining that their party members could no longer be challenged. Gary Gygax devised a dungeon that was certain to grind their characters down, The Tomb of Horrors. Its typically not so fun because people don't like their PCs dying.
That is crazy
The only way I can see somebody playing through ToH and hating it is if the DM didn't set expectations beforehand
My players went in knowing it was unfair and they enjoyed that challenge
I have backup characters for if my characters die. I already know its possible
They enjoyed being paranoid and knowing that the entire dungeon is working against them and will try to trick them
Sounds like gygax went above and beyond for it
I wanna run it again
Every session I've been at where one of my PCs died it has elevated the session to legendary status
A PC dying can be so much fun
We lost 2 pc in one session
Sometimes I get disappointed when my PCs don't die
I was pretty disappointed that I didn't die last session in CoS
I never try to get them killed or play recklessly with the hope of them dying
I will still always try to play them to preserve their lives
But sometimes I get disappointed that I survived
If my character dies doing what they would do then its a good death
Hey I just joined this server and idk what to do
One of my characters recently died a really narratively poignant death and it was super awesome, people legit had tears welling up at his death
But it was pretty quickly undercut by them reviving him a couple sessions later
I was hoping it would be more of an arc working towards his revival
But it was really easy and just felt unearned to me
Just let them die a hero and bring in someone new
What do you want to do?
I want to make a rogue and mage combo if possible
But I just recently got back into DnD
What kind of spellcaster? Theres many different kinds with different quirks
I have zero idea
Do mundane sunglasses work for getting rid of Sunlight Sensitivity, or is Sunlight Sensitivity too magical for them to work?
I personally rule it as yes, but this means sunglasses are extremely in-demand and pretty expensive
Mutliclassing has its advantages and drawbacks
Idk if a rogue and a mage would be a good combo
For a new player i wouldnt multiclass
Play an Arcane Trickster
They're a Rogue that gets spellcasting
What that?
The best Rogue/Mage is Arcane Trickster
Itās a Rogue subclass with magic powers
No, it's more than just the sunlight getting in their eyes
They are sunlight sensitive
Their very body is adverse to it
My dnd beyond app only gives me the thief option even though I have the guide on my app to
yo bro those options are surprisingly close to unlimited
Drow, yes, because they were cursed by some god somehow, but what about Kuo-Toa?
Nice pfp btw
Warlock rogue. Sneak attack hex eldritch blast
What even is an arcane trickster?
It's a subclass for rogue
I know that but what does it do?
A few of them are magical curses
Its in the phb. I've never seen it personally
Thanks! For a magical thief character, you've got options for days:
Rogue - Arcane Trickster (Thievery + Magic)
Rogue - Soulknife (Thievery + Psychic ability)
Bard - Any Subclass (Thematic mixture of Cleric, Rogue, and Wizard. Support skill monkey)
Warlock - Any Subclass (Magic first, smullduggery is a close second)
Itās why Orcs got Drow level Darkvision but donāt have sunlight sensitivity
Give me one moment
Had to download dnd beyond
What about the ones that arenāt magical curses?
Also WotC just up and completely removed Sunlight Sensitivity from the Drow in 5.5, whatās the lore explanation for that?
It now goes to Drow of Lolth instead
And of course the PHB isnāt as setting dependent anymore
Is that a separate subspecies?
2014 was very FR heavy while 2024 isnāt
Itās the followers of Lolth
Is there a curse that let's the one enemy and yourself sense eachother snd effects both till one kills the other?
They are their own separate faction as written in Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun as enemy stat blocks
Lolth is something else
She is a Demon Lord Goddess so she is something else in fact
I love her story. Ive seen her stat block and fighting her would not be fun
I thought itād have different mechanics the way you said it
I completely forgot she was a goddess. Guess that means there is a demon lord god!
I havenāt been able to find an official one, and the homebrew ones are pretty hit or miss
Her own daughter is the opposite of her and brings in drow who want change for good
The sunlight sensitivity was a curse Corellon put on the Drow who followed her after all
Although if you find it again, Iād be up for if you wanted to send it to me
She had a daughter?!
So youāre saying now only the Lolthsworn ones have Sunlight Sensitivity?
She has a son too
Elismere
Oh wait is this pre or post exile?
Or however her name is spelled
Actually, you know what would be really cool? If Lolthsworn Drow got Poison Spray, Ray of Sickness, and Web on top of their existing spells for being Lolthsworn
Eilistraee, rather.
Goddess of dance and of good drow and darker beings who want to be good
Eilistraee was before exile
Gives you a good reason to nerf yourself with Sunlight Sensitivity since you get Web, one of the best control spells
Hwr name is hard to spell
I donāt know about Lolthās son tho
His name is Vhaeraun and he wants gender equality
Someone is asking me for money to enter the game, is this normal?
Deities got all sorts of good stuff in their stories
Kinda. Some games do it but itās rare
Eilistraee was specifically pre exile because when the exile did happen Corellon said she could stay.
She said no and went to help the Drow hopefully leave her motherās clutches
I have avandra as my dancer bards deity
Paid games exist, but there's also alot of scams
Only if you were told beforehand it was a paid game
If theyāre springing it on you for no reason, then itās not normal
Corellon was soft on her though he did love her
If they're asking you to pay for art to play, or springing it on you out of the blue, it's a scam
No, for just art
And then the trinity of balance came along so that no one could abuse the amount of power he gave lolth
I should probably make this an origin feat for my players.
Get Web and Levitate once a day each but you get sunlight sensitivity
Ive got a character that is a mix between an eladrin and one of lolths arachnids
With light sensitivity
How is Levitate a Drow spell? Itās not poisonous or spidery
Itās on all their stats and lore
Even Drizzt had it before he ditched his family
How else is a Drow supposed to hover ominiously at you?
The ones I wish the lore wasn't so conflicting on is shadow Kai. Each edition rewrote how they work
drow who were gifted in magic used levitate to help traverse the underdark
I was gonna make a Drow joke about showing someone their place but it jus came out as misandrist
It's funny that both of Lolth and Corellons children are both different from their parents.
drizzt has the ability to cast levtitate iirc
Yeah that makes sense
Vhaerun or whatever is evil, but he's more civilized evil unlike his mother.
Not anymore
He lost it when he left the Underdark
this is also reflected in that racial feat in xanathar
aha! i knew i was missing something
And Eilastree is better than all 3 of them.
Stopped living in the Underdark and following Lolth
Not that he ever really followed her.
If you want to just read or listen up on lolths history. Its a good one
Exactly. Just ignore that she only accepts female clerics.
Unfortunately some of the misandry was in the dna.
only reason why i remember he was able to was becauase... his sister was being... weird
Ye he had trouble using levitation for awhile iirc.
I do know that Eilastree allows male members of her clergy, but didn't realize she still had a bit of her mom in her and said only female clerics.
right, but there was some... alabama vibes
I mean she is the mother of good drow. Opposite of her mother so theres gonna be some similarities
Ye difference is, even tho she only accepts female clerics, males are to be treated as equals anyways.
Which is good
Tho the clergy suffers from misandry issues due to the brainwashing they have to undo.
Which makes sense and I think is good. Doesn't make being an Eilastree worshipper wash you clean of all the bad you had to live with and imprinted on you.
I mean lolths solution is to turn failed males into driders which are allowed, though frowned upon and avoided
I think she does the Drider thing to both genders
Men on any day of the week that ends with day
She likes her arachnes
Lolth when someone identifies as something with men in it and not a wo behind it.
What about the upcoming Ravenloft book? What you guys think?
150 dollars to wizards of the coast
I'm exited with the new horror subclasses
Wo behind it
Menwo?
I like the dragon books
Menwo would be turned into driders any day
The wo isn't before men
Repost to turn the nearest manwo into a drider
I'm sold on it already tbh
What is it going to have?
One of my favorite books for pc is monsters of the multiverse
Horror Subclasses r cool, the species reprints r cool, updated (in some cases, finally printed) Darklord stats is awesome. I'm always down for new Bastion Facilities.
Ive wanted to try a shadow Kai. Just trying to figure out their background since its been rewritten 4 times
That would be fun
I wouldn't mind trying a horror themed session or campaign
what about shadarkai makes it hard to play one
16 Domains of Dread, 17 Darklords, 7 subclasses, 4 species, 4 backgrounds, 2 Origin feats, 9 Dark Gifts, 10 genres of horror from gothic to dark fantasy, 51 other monsters, 47 maps and 28 digital quickplay maps for Maps VTT.
I love the bloodied condition.
I love adding bonuses to custom monsters as they become desperate to survive. :D
Is there a bleeding type of condition that effects movement speed and damages when someone moves?
Or damages when they move
I know theres the 20x20 spell that can damage for each step you take through it if you don't know its there
there isnt
Not in 5e. Closest is the infernal wound from a bearded devil
4e had it
All I can remember on it
Would be an interesting thing
Eh
Theres some thar seem weak until you see their abilities. The sea hag has some crazy stuff
dpr isnt everything
Nah
stares at strength drain and paralyzing touch
Possession, or intellect eater stealing someone's body
Poor dumb dumbs
I really like the sea hags kit
Strenght drain and paralyzing touch are very difficult. Never seen the power word kill or whatever it is
what?
Power word kill. Instantly kills a character if it has 100 hp or less
i know what pwk does. i fail to see what your point is
Those first two you said aren't fun to go against
Especially considering the 0 str can kill you. Well many simple things can
and being hit with death glare isnt?
Death glare?
Oh yeah rhat abilitt
Took a second. Not a good one to get hit by
Ive been learning different creatures. Right now I'm looking around at cr 0-1 types for a lvl1 group
I love using CR 0 monsters tbh. Small critters and Crawling Claws are things I love
And how fragile you are with just the basic class and character. No feats or add-ons
Creates good moments to
depend
martials tend to shine better in early game
Casters not so much
True
but some casters have good stuff early, warlock is one
The monk class can get crazy
depend, your AC is linked to 2 stats yeah, but still can be not so big like other classes
True. The spell casters are where I struggle. Im good with the classes for bows and martial weapons
in early or in general?
Gobbie Juice
In general. The casters i am learning. Especially when it comes to those who require a patron for magic or the different spell books
it depend honestly
Yeah, playing a caster can be tricky but understanding you must be far from the danger sources and know which spells use in X situations
The only X that matters is a "Target Rich Environment"
and if you are talking about warlock that is good and bad
Good because they dont have a lot of spells, easy recharge and you get lot of things from invocations
Bad becasue that, they dont get lots of spells and that limit your freedom to use them all the time
fortunately each patron give you a certain window of options
the target what?
Fireball cantrip when allies and other enemies are all together
TRE; The basis on which there is a large number of targets in a prime area to use such spells to effectively hit most if not all
(Friend or Foe matter not in a TRE scenario/jk)
oh that, yeah, sorta
The thing i dont understand with warlock is why yiu dont get the patrons spells on top of the few you can choose. Instead they get added to the limited pool of spells you can choose
Sometimes focusing in one enemy instead of groups can do a lot more
That's why I love psychic lance
taking down some dangerous unit while the minions arent a problem is a good option
All of that is situation dependant. Ive also noticed not many use the flanking rule
I think flanking has its place in some scenarios
It does kinda suck when most enemies are a size larger than the party so you dont get the benefit whilst they do
That one is a bit sad for sure
flanking is an optional rule.
^
They are in 2024 subclasses onward
You can flank large people
Yeah, same size or larger you can flank
