Let you reroll initiative and add a d6 to the result. And allies within 30ft added the d6 to theirs and enemies decreased it from theirs unless they had charm immunity.
Never really ran into a situation where I felt any of the spells from it were too broken but 1000 spells means I only saw a couple.
Valdas on the other hand.
One player at the table backed the original kickstarter
That's rough buddy
So he had the beta PDF and the dm allowed it and any time I saw something from it was just insane. They probably reigned it in the final product but it was crazy.
Like talking a level 8 Wizard with Time Stop.
It was. Mage Hand Press said "we're tired of this "all characters are the main characters" nonsense. It's time for the real main characters. Anyone who uses our stuff!"
there's no way what.
One of those books I am not touching
Take that with a grain of salt cause that mightve been a magic item the DM gave him for some dang reason.
Blackstaff was very samey I found, and alot of it felt like they didn't really grasp how 5E works.
Yeah like I said I didn't read through it all, mainly the bard spells where I found a lot to like.
There were a couple neat spells in it, but for the most part I was dissatisfied with it.
Third party I got on my potential list is Exploring Eberron and maybe Monster Manual Expanded.
I want more monsters of certain creature types
Monster Manual Expanded does get pretty samey ngl
Dammit
A lot of "They get a legendary action to move, attack, or do a spell"
Ah so the right kind of monster design /j
Thats the one you showed me, right?
Yep
Legendary Action Suplex.
Admittedly a lot of my monster design is very simple
yeah, lots of the LAs were screaming copy paste
It has some neat stuff like Aspects of Demon lords and Archdevils.
So if you want a Cr16 Zariel the book has it
Idk. I just want more monsters
Dungeon of the Mad Mage might be unintentionally a good choice for that
It's probably got a lot of adventure unique enemies
most of the non-named individuals use MoTM and MM monsters
Yep
I killed my character to kill a guy who was threatening the party
probably where most of the MoTM monsters came from actually
Some of the named ones are "Use this stat block and use these changes"
Well MotM monsters came from Volos and Tome of Foes
Man. I'm just getting more depressed.
Princes of the Apocolypse too
Yeah Flee, Mortals is probably the main big ones I like
It's a rough life when you want more Oozes, and Plants.
Nothing Perkins and Craw hated more than allowing monsters other than Undead to be made.
Isn't this gonna be majority altered monsters?
Yeah probably.
But at the very least it'd give me something
I can't just make stuff off the top of my head I need something to stimulate it.
Tbh I just look at a statblock and think "How do I make an adventure out of this?"
It had Crystal Golems, which I stole
realllllll
I can only do that when I'm in my bi-monthly creative bursts
Often I find myself going "Damn, a Behir is really cool. I gotta find a way to put this in my game."
thats how i came to love Empyreans
I just read the little tid bits of lore and go "Ok thats an encounter I'll use"
I mostly get my ideas from talking here cause I don't think about what I say so sometimes I come up with stuff I think are a good idea.
Like if I want to use a Gelatinous cube and it says "They hang out in city sewers to keep it clean" I'm gonna make an adventure in the sewers
Town Mayor is angry that his city is so sanitary
So he wants the party to kill what keeps cleaning the city so he can start taxing for clean water.
Or the bad guys are below the city and the players unfortunately walk into the "Cleaning Crew"
Why hurt poor Gelly
Like were rats or something
They're just keeping the city clean.
Otyugh v Gelatinous Cube adventure. The Otyughs want more sewage to eat, the Gelatinous Cubes keep dissolving it.
Pretty funny ngl
idea: Eat each other
Otyugh are stronger I think
So you could have "Hey something is killing our cubes"
Now they gotta find the cube killer, the Otyugh.
I think my issue really stems from the fact that I'm trying to think of stuff.
Maybe I should just rob monsters from Pathfinder.
Alot of my creations are just "give something movement, give it advantage, give it magic, give it defenses."
Its wild how Lost Mines of Phandelvar only has 27 stat blocks for a whole campaign.
and one of them is Commoner.
Shows off how you can do a game with only a little.
Phandelver has a cheat code embedded in it
It's too good of a starter adventure.
You really only have to make subtle changes to fix what little issues it does have.
Also like... that fights a lil too much
Ah yeah Lost Icespire of Mine Peakdelver.
My party is just about to finish this adventure!!!
They're actively hunting Cryovain rn
I was making a World of Io referenece but good to know
The fact they combined Lost Mines of Phandelvar, Dragons of Icespire Peak, and Tyranny of Dragons is fun
Cryovain iirc is pretty commonly reused throughout early 5e adventures
(DoIP is leagues better than Lost Mines don't @ me)
The only downside of DoIP is that it (less than cleanly) very obviously had its connections to its sequel trilogy severed
I have a new question. Will the Unearthed Arcana subclasses "Pestilence Domain", "Circle of the Titan", "Hell Knight", and "Demonic Sorcery" become official or not?
no idea until a book releases them
No one knows
That's why its UA
So far they've confirmed and released every subclass that's been in UA since the new team took over.
If that keeps up, probably
Uuuhhhh
We don't know, but its reasonable to conclude that it will become official. I think everything that has been through UA in the last 5 or so years made it to print
I dont believe thats the case
Cause duh Baldur say it does
They made it in some incarnation, sometimes stuff became a different class' subclass, sometimes stuff became Feats.
What wasn't printed in 5.5e so far?
Hexblade
that was in a UA? Hexblade
The dark sun stuff
Didn't they say it's gonna be in the Magic Book
mystic…
Dark Sun stuff is most likely later this year though
When?
It also heavily depends on how you are quantifying "when the new team took over"
Hexblade is getting printed though? It's in the Arcana book, I thought?
Mystic became the 4 Psychic subclasses in Tasha's
Hexblade isn't in the ravenloft book (which is where people expected it)
They just moved it off the horror subclasses
After the corebooks.
They rereleased it in the Arcane UA
No as in when did they announce it was for the Arcane book?
I dont think it has been
Cause all the FR subs were printed. The new Arty sub was printed. The Horror UA subs as they are currently are being printed in Ravenloft. (Hexblade moved)
Yeah I figure itll be in the Arcana book and we might see another UA pass of it. If not that, then some 2027 book. We are absolutely getting a 5.5 Hexblade tho, there's no way they wouldn't reprint it
Then Dark Sun book will be announced at gencon if Ravenloft is received well probably
They need the good PR
To survive all the DnDtubers who quit coming back for the "WotC likes Slavery?! Omg not click bait!" Video spam
Since some quit due to the lack of drama and farmable problems in dnd space from WotC decisions cause the only other videos they make are the same videos people have seen for a decade.
yeah, seeing hwo the biggest news recently was the Sellsword stuff
Like the one dude nuked his channel cause he switched to "DnD is dying!" Content after 2024 dropped and since the books have been doing well and received well since compared to a few products before the corebooks he hasn't had any ability to clickbait well enough.
which one was that?
Short-form content is a plague
Some old dude. I don't remember his channel name.
I'd say that the Evil UA has a good shot at getting published. Though, I'd like them to take another pass at it before then.
Apparently he used to make dnd history content before moving into WotC drama vids.
Oh i think i know who you speak of
Arcane's the only one they've released updates to.
Ah I know too
Idk personally I think the Evil UA will happen.
I do think most of the mystic subs has little chance to see print
I'm expecting Book of Vile Darkness 5e.
It and Dark Sun are old fan wishes and would get a lot of good will if done right on both.
There's a lot of damage from the past 20 years or so I think theyre trying to fix for good will for the future of the IP.
I would just prefer them to not go straight to published. A UA update would be nice, to see how exactly they've recieved feedback on them. Maybe taking another pass at Hellknight that's not just "Apply DOT and go gambling."
it has only been like, several days since the feedback period started, so
our party of 3 level 1s almost got TPK'ed by 4 goblins that wouldnt roll lower than 15 😭
thats level 1
thankfully I had 1 hp left and cure wounds while the rest of the party was unconscious
Cordell nuking relations with partners when 4e dropped. The 5e three nuking 4e and throwing the baby out with the bathwater. The third party screw-ups, the rushed DMG with monster math they didn't use. Taking 5 years to find a real foundation then screw up badly a few more times including the forbidden event over the last 5 years.
They had a lot of long time damages to start repairing.
Sure. It was almost 2 months between the Arcane Subclass UA and its updates. But it was good to see where WOTC was heading. And if the schedule holds, it'll look to be maybe a 2027 halloween release for this Book of Vile Darkness.
So next week my party is going against a Knucklavee. How screwed are we.
So maybe by end of july, we can get a "Villainous options update!"
Wheres my Book of Exalted Deeds
Idk at this point at the very least I would be very very surprised if Dark Sun isn't the last book this year.
There's just too much blatant arrows pointing towards it without an official confirmation.
Releasing an explicitly Dark Sun UA not long after Crawford was gone. It got received well. 2 months later, renew the Dark Sun IP after it expired a year and a half prior. Then be quiet about it till Gencon, which I would be if I was a company trying to tip toe if I was about to drop a setting where people are enslaved and various species were driven extinct in "cleansing wars" even if the lore is gonna be you fighting against the Sorcerer-Kings and Athas's doomed fate if they treat 4e like it exists which they have so far. (In the corebooks, and Forgotten Realms Guides at least)
I just took 60 damage to my max 59 hp
Not to mention the Psion UA. And Psionics being to Dark Sun like Syrup is to Pancakes.
I love fire ball 5th level
Because they're based.
Witchcraft
luckj
Roll those death saving throws
Getting to advertise a new class would make any book sell well.
Oh 3p
Yep. December. Dark Sun, Psion class.
All aboard the hopium express.
And if it crashes I'm going to Pathfinder for the holidays
December. When we need the fires the most.
yeah, a new class is kinda guranteed to boost book sales
If Psion does go in that book. Woohoo, I can play Wolverine 😄
Y'all, would this be the correct channel to ask about how to approach my DM regarding some stuff that has been... un-fun lately? This is my first campaign, and I'm not sure if asking about this stuff goes here or in the newcomers channel
No, no, there is no channel for that so this is actually the perfect place
Go on, what's on your mind
Okay so basically my character is a Bronze Dragonborn Barbarian who devoutly follows Bahamut. One of our party read a cursed book while I was in the room with them, and our DM had us both make Wisdom saves. I failed (obviously, because Barb stats) and it ended up with me basically getting an evil pseudo-god stuck in my head. That's fine, it's a fun conflict. But my problem comes from the fact that the DM is having this pseudo-god control me sometimes. Like in combat, my character just goes lights-out and the god takes over (albeit not all the time, I get to smash heads most of the time). Or the god thinks my character is being stupid (obviously, because Barb stats) and just puts me to sleep for a few hours to shut me up.
I really really don't like having my character's agency taken away like that, but I don't know how to articulate that to my DM
okay, first off, clear communication is always the best start
"DM, can I please keep control of my character during combat, and just roleplay him getting possessed by this evil entity?"
Bird 🫵
Oh this is something my DM covered even before our campaign begun. A couple of us are very much against full blown mind control (fine with the odd status effect here and there) but loss of agency was a hard no for us. I'd communicate tha.t
Combat is also kinda iffy sometimes, because my DM likes to do a lot of "house rules", like for example my weapon is a magical weapon that does 1d12 bludgeoning and 2d10 radiant damage, but she says that only the radiant damage counts as "magical" so my 1d12 is usually halved because of resistances
But yes, I like the idea of just asking her to let me keep control during combat. I mean, I'm fine with the idea of a devout Good-aligned character having an Evil-aligned minor deity in their head. It's fun. But I don't like not being able to actually play the game sometimes
(I still think it's good riddance dnd 5.5 got rid of non magical resistance)
Yeah we're in 5e
did they?
Thats a stupid take
I still see it frequently
Yes and no the that sort of lanaguage is no longer used in 2024
aka magical and non magical BPS
Figured. I recommend you simply have a talk with your DM about wanting to still control your character even when possessed. For the mechanical thing, is it like her not knowing that's how it works or a conscious choice?
Mhm
It's mostly swarms of Insects and animals
And even if it still existed, magic weapon is magic weapon
I know ghost do
that one incredibles meme
Either all of it is magical or none of it is
Chain devil right?
ehhh I know my fiends qutie well
Mainly cause I study them a lot
even a common magical sword still bypasses nonmagical BPS (which isn't a thing anymore)
It's a conscious choice. She does a few things to "handicap" the players with house rules. For example: today we had to deal with a trap that I definitely saw coming, but wasn't allowed to roll my Dex save with advantage (Danger Sense) because this trap was "really fast".
There's only 21 to 24 monsters out of 500 in the 5.5 MM that have BPS resistance iirc
yup
The players shouldn't be handicapped imo
They should be allowed to be strong
Im so glad they removed Non magical resistnce/immune because it was so boring
Probably cause they just directly use monsters from like MMotM
That's the point of Danger sense -_-
And its like Demilich, Tarrasque, Chain Devil, Ghosts, and swarms of Insects, animals.
It just made madsters strong or weak
Demi liches were very strange in 2014 as they were the only monster that were resistant to magical weapon damage
What kind of bull is that
Danger Sense is like a 6th sense working with your sight, before your actual sight registers it, it feels it
Yeah, Demiliches had just pure BPS resistance to make up for their very low health
"The trap is fast" "but danger sense" "but the trap is fast"
And they kept that
That's certainly... a choice.... Did she like announce this sort of thing at the beginning of the campaign?
not entirely pure cause spell damage still did full
like cloud of daggers
'fireball is fast" "but danger sense" "fireball fast" moment?
Yeah 2014 weird
handicapping and invalidating player features on a whim is bad DMing and a red flag. Removing player agency is never good
Your danger sense doesnt work because the trap is "too fast" sounds like a whole lotta BS
Also it's very good roleplay material just going to waste 😔
Also, Danger sense is for barbarians, of all things
I think she's doing some of this stuff just because she's not... quite... an antagonistic DM but doesn't really want us to succeed "too easily"
Handcapping your players doesn't make something challenging, it just makes it a slog.
I was saw barbarians danger sense as a like.. it works like spider mans thing
Then communicate to her
"I like that you're not giving us everything on a silver platter, but sometimes your methods are a bit... unfair"
Spidey Sense doesnt make sense either to be fair
danger sense is legit the point....
only 1 class gets danger sense, so likely only 1 in party is doing it, and tthen only dex saves
yeah danger sense is
ADV on Dex saves, only ever blocked if you are Incapacitated
Its suppose to make it easier for you to pass a dex save
So the only time you ever don't have danger sense benefitting you as a level 2+ barbarian, is if you have the incapacitated condition
in which case you ask "why am I briefly incapacitated whenever a trap triggers"
I will. So it's totally okay for me to just tell her "hey I don't like that I don't get to use Danger Sense because I feel that it's a sixth sense sort of thing and saying a trap is too quick isn't fair"?
I've seen this with a DM who religiously hates acrobatic rolls
Yeah, but start with the player agency stuff
Why would anyone hate acrobatic rolls?
I have yet to see him ever call for one instead of athletics
I've had a DM who would never use Athlethics checks
Yeah, that's the big stuff first off. Because I don't like having basically an NPC control me in combat.
acrobatics was always the check chosen for anything physical
for climbing?
because almost entire party has 0 or -1 str
you tell her that the rules say you always benefit from Danger Sense unless you are incapacitated and that taking away your agency or your features as written is bad
Some people just dont like em ig
or raw strength
Twas the night before midwinter and not a player in sight, what goes on in the chat today?
Acorbatics and Athletics, while they do have some overlap, are definitely for very different things
I choose athletics, and only ever do acrobatics if my players ask for it instead
"Roll Athletics" "Can I roll Acrobatics instead?" "Sure go ahead"
not just climbing, jumping, hopping, tightrope walking, and more
DM would say roll acrobatics for pulling on a rope
Thank you guys. It's nice to know that I'm not just being a whiny little baby about this. This is my first experience playing D&D so I'm not 100% familiar with how to draw boundaries with a DM.
The dice tell the story
yeah
"You signed up to govern these features, I signed up to play with these features, why are these features being nullified?"
This does strike me more athletics
It definitely would be
Everyone at the table should be having fun, including you
Someday I want to DM a campaign, but I want some experience as a player first
I am moving into just pure DMing
Fair, but the best way to start is to get your feet wet
DMs forcibly culling/nerfing/breaking player class features just cuz of "power" or whatever are always cringe
Acrobatics is for things like Balance, and well...acrobatic acts, though you could also argue Performance for the latter.
a campaign of mine cancelled, the DM unfriended and blocked everyone, and the other one is on hiatus right now
also, I have repeatedly asked for acrobatics for things that could be either
If you don't certain want things to be too easy for your players..
Just up the DC of that thing?
I'll never understand people who do that.
Yeah, that's definitely better, I started dnd with DMing and it was a rough beginning
Both Players and DM's.
It like.. still gives them a chance AND doesn't make you look like an ass by nerfing them
funniest thing is, he keeps calling for acrobatics instead of dex saves then realizes his mistake
It's hard to accept that you don't wanna run a game then tell said players it
Easier to ghost
so maybe he really only sees acrobatics as a reactionary thing?
Last minute Ghostings is like, the second biggest "Absolutely Don't, you jerk." Behavior in TTRPG's
We did lose one player in this campaign but it had nothing to do with the DM and everything to do with the only place we could all gather for the game was at a friend's house, and she recently bought a pet snake and the player who left has a phobia of snakes
They can't muster the strength to just say "I'm sorry, I can't run/I can't play this campaign"
Honestly I don't know why he did that, we (the players) have been so patient and supportive of him
I'm just gonna DM a second game now
Give grace, most don't mean to be a burden. It's understandable the frustrations though
I'm not too mad about it, honestly
QQ did Dragon Lance come out for ADND/2E or 1E? I bought the Dragonlance Chronicles first saga, book thing. Reading it two chapters a night to pace myself until a big plane ride in two weeks! Anyways I am loving the story so far I'm just wondering what each of the classes seem to be to me
Breaking up over text but it's TTRPGs
1e
Tanis is a Ranger it seems, Tassle is more Rouge or Burglar? Flint seems like a fighter, Strumm a Paladin, Camaron could be a fighter or Barbarian? I think that Raistlin is a Wizard?
Honestly i wish i discovered dnd way earlier- but i guess a eight years experience isn't that bad.
Raistlin is very definitely a Wizard
What? It's an accurate analogy
yeah I wish i knew of dnd when i was a kid
Yeah I was thinking Wizard or Maybe Warlock...But I'm not aware all the classes that were in 1e lol
So i wouldnt be brainrotted and cant think of ideas for my games
Oof, just looked at my two active campaigns, looks like I'm only a DM now
I was a bit stubborn when i was younger, systems wise i mostly just did whatever was fun for players, but that sort of got iffy when the numbers got really big
I didn't have enough people to ever play with others when I was younger so I didn't play lmao
Cursed to forever be a DM
But man the idea of like having one of the first true Clerics in Goldmoon in an age actually being able to hear oooh that's great to think of
I couldve gotten the players i think
Also most people don't wanna play with minors so I just didn't.
my small little school had kids playing Yugioh and other stuff
So I heard of DND waay back when
So it probably wouldnt have been hard to get them to try a different "boardgame"
My first experience was the origonal Aquisitions incorperated stuff
Raistlin was very much a Wizard. All his magic came from studying and componnets, no patrons.
Here's the two campaigns that are active for me right now
Curse of Strahd (the one I DM), and Infinite Staircase (Three players, theatre of the mind), and one of the players just left Infinite Staircase, so I think the DM might cancel the campaign
Rn my minds split
Try not to stop campaign challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)
I got two current campaigns I need to get better at running, and I wanna run a third, but I also wanna play other systems
I'm unbelievably frustrated, but I just don't care enough to show it anymore, I'm just gonna be a forever DM and start running a second game!
I wanted to get into a good fantasy novel and I liked the setting of Kirn from the Setting book a while back and so decided to give the actual Dragonlance books a try
Hey, that's hell you're walking into.
For a time being i had a streak of running a campaign almost everyday, the dnd went on for years but i think it stopped around last year
and hot damn I'm sucked in, only on chapter 5 right now
A hefty run
My physical and mental health gets in the way
then it shall be hell for me
I'm hoping I can run my campaigns to the very end, reminds me I should probably message my players about a choice so we don't waste the whole next session doing nothing
Would ya look at that, Infinite Staircase is now also on hiatus, but for a good reason at least, oh well
Ah yes, I understand. I've ran many homebrew campaigns and worked on systems sometimes it's hard to get players to try something new, though in my case i'm guilty with having many things i wanna try
Rn my two campaigns are in my homebrew setting
tell me more
and its getting to me now that I'm out of a creative hyperfocused state
Both were to try out two of the major countries
I will keep talkin about Dragonlance as I read it more here, cause I feel like its DND related enough
No spoilers, though, keep in mind
Oh I also am loving the chapter arts
I will try not to lol
that's the setting of one of the campaigns I'm in (that's on hiatus as well)
Yes?
One is a Japanese mixed with French culture place thats currently in a cold civil war. The other is in a middle eastern cultured magic country thats suffering from several magic and non-magical issues due to them basically destroying the world 200 years ago, and not having the means to deal with issues as they started so now its piling up. The country's leader destroyed most of the world, his country were mainly victims as well.
Yeah they're great give a real old school fantasy vibe
not looking to do a commision don't dm me
if you want to advertise go to #dnd-advertisements .
I am amazed the friend request didnt already come in
there's a time and place for everything, and currently it's not here, and not now
How exactly does clerics work? I know they are given divine power by their deity. But would there be a lot of fanfare? Or is it just "hey I woke up this morning and God gave me powers" .... or something in between?
Depends
That's pretty cool setting, I had a session i made. About a abandon gov site, with a silent hill lovecraft twist to it. It was a fun mix. Are you feeling stressed with your setting right now or just feel the desire to start anew?
what Sora said
First part.
Both games are sandbox hexcrawls largely improv'd and HB of mine is being used
It was fine when i was in a creative state but rn im out of fuel
Depends on the setting and DM but typically clerics become those who dedicate their lives to the deity
It all depends on how you wanna roll it, some fun stuff for a Cleric is being a god's chosen champion to grow and have a cool destiny. Thats a plot hook for your DM right there I tell ya what
Mm, i see does it feel more like a drag now hosting it? or is it more that you feel more spent than annoyed?
Or like it could be just your faith in your god is so strong you can summon real powers from it
(I would avoid this sort of thing at least without asking the DM first.)
I mean yeah but thats a backstory thing you discuss with your DM
Spent and annoyed that I'm spent
Well it's not really a backstory thing so much as a Plot thing, there's a big difference
I for one would be happy to include that as it proivides some good opportunities and stuff
Hey if you wanna advertise commissions we have an #dnd-advertisements channel
I started making a setting book for my setting and got around 56 pages or so then crash
I disagree, because its how you got your class powers/magic
Imagine spending 1000 gold coins on a random weapon from a vendor just to get a common axe
Could never be me
No typically being the chosen of a god is a plot thing inevitably
#highrollergang
I mean its both, a good backstory will play into the plot eventually
You what
Actively being a God's Chosen champion isn't just something that's happened in the past, something like that inherently is an active plot.
Well creativity flows naturally my friend, If you can't push it or force it maybe try to find inspiration in media or archetypes. It's fine to take breaks or even ask to do something else if that's more your route. Afterall dming is all about communication and fun
It is, but you could say the same thing about Any given Warlock as they have made their pact
but how they made their pact IS part of their backstory
There was this vendor that was selling mystery chests with the chance to get a legendary weapon and one of my players just said "let's go gambling!" And wasted his entire earnings through this 2 week campaign to buy a chest only to get a common axe
Well unfortunately not for me. For me creativity comes in monthly to bimonthly sprints.
you got Gotchad
The point I'm trying to make here, is "I'm god's special little boy." Is something that's Inherently very Main Charecter Syndrome'y, and one should be very careful with that.
That was a scam, there was no legendary weapon
And as soon as anything happens that knocks me out of it, I gotta wait another month to month and a half.
they got... Gacha'd
Don't worry friend i don't mean to make it sound like it's easy or swift, I just mean make sure you're still having fun, you don't wanna burn out on something you care about or enjoy.
Usually drastic weather that triggers my allergies or I get sick another way
Then, another payer bought the same chest and got an epic weapon
If anyone wants to use my sub-ironic plot, I have some ideas
I don't think anyone particularly wants to roleplay Lootbox scams in D&D
I mean, if you have like thousands of gold, I suppose that's something you can spend it on
I think we got another bot
I think its funny
Has there been a comparison or a contrast of the domains in the old Ravenloft book to the new one? Are the genre explanations and lore going to be largely the same?
Dnd lootboxes is a new one i can't lie.
I'd laugh when my DM brought it up in alighter campaign
There's gonna be more lore for each dreadlord as well as a one shot for each of them besides Strahd obviously
It wasn't though. It's just the rarity to get one is the same as Micheal Jackson doing the macarena at the foot of your bed while Santa claus makes the sun explode all while the rapture is happening
I wanna run another campaign now... hm... Lost Mines or Homebrew?
The dreadlords are getting their own statblocks too I believe instead of "use this statblock"
TBH I could see a Church of Dinonysus or other sort of Gambling Adjacent gods running a divine lootbox kinda thing
The lost mines are not very lost when people keep finding them
Indeed
The Lost Mine of Phandelver
I think it is just called that
This is what Martin Luther wanted to stop btw
How did Phandelver lose a whole mine
Do I run Lost Mines or dive head first into homebrew
It's a hole in the ground, how do you lose that?
Man, I already feel like a sucker buying this book again!
Cause theyre called Phandalin, not Phandelver, not their mine
Because of my Wave Cave
I mean you could designate each mine shaft as its own mine
That's like telling a Dwarf that each of their beard hairs is it's own beard.
I'm a happy sucker, 150 dollars to wizards of the coast
As long as the products actually worth it, and not a blatant low effort scam with no heart in it
"If you get nothing for 100 loot boxes, I'll give you a pity magic item"
Looking at you Spelljammer, you flaming dumpster fire
Imagine a chapel, a symbol of pure holy power, housing the core of all of the evil that is plaguing the land. Pretty ironic right? How a place supposed to be holy and supposed to be a symbol of peace being the patient zero ground of all the evil your party goes through.
Okay how did you steal my session notes, hand it over
I mean it depends on the god
I can see it now a cleric named Chance Windfall
No! Don't steal my ironic sub plots!
Nooooo!
Yours? I've been planning this for weeks!
At least give me recognition
I've built the boss in it and the music, the lair actions, legendary actions, etc.
No
Like every dungeon they go through, have a mysterious melon on a table that no one can move
Brilliant
GO AHEAD! TAKE MY SUBPLOTS! I HAVE THE INSTRUMENT TO MAKE MORE! 🧠
Anyways
the urge to buy Foundry is stronger than ever
The one shots better be more than, get attacked by 4 Kuo-toa, then 4 sahuagin, then Cuthulu appears.
The Faerun adventures were a bit thin.
when the forward in my big dragonlance book collection talked about how it would be perfect for a movie I thought it was exaggerating, but no like 5 chapters in and I can alerady see it in my mind
Sometimes I wonder if spelljammer is part of the reason that wotc has hardly been producing adventure books
Well its probably gonna be simple stuff like that
Since they are one shots
they provided enough inpsiration for me to think of more stuff at least and it was like 4 adventures per reigon, plus the reigons themselves
But part of that is you can take the ideas and use them elsewhere with deeper use
Like the FR adventures are meant to be either one shots or slotted into FR games
Vecna is probably a bigger reason
I loved the FR books personally
I don't think Spelljammer had anything to do with that, I think it's entirely due to their focus having shifted to 5.5E
Last full written adventure was a complete mess that got ripped apart online pretty rightfully
And managing the entire...mess that it was.
5.5 was absolutely not really ready to meet the deadline they wanted. Which is why they had the whole publishing mess.
I like them, I just don’t want that adventure template to be what WOTC uses moving forward
I like it for the setting guides
With release delays and them ditching their printer for another company. If I'm rembering it right
fair, but I also think its fair that the FR books were setting guides, not adventures themselves
Should I just run lost mines of phandelver or run homebrew? I just want to run a second campaign right now, more than anything
They exist to provide inpsiration and basic stuff for the others
I mean the book itself made me start a Daleands campaign and I am loving it
I mean i'm not quite sure of what the lost mines is, buuut I mean if you run a campaign already made that's less work on the homebrew side less that's what you enjoy doing in which case homebrew.
Ye it is the best FR guide in over 20 years
Which isnt saying much, but its good that it is
I really enjoyed the gods section of the player book
Cause its competition was SCAG and the 4e Forgotten Re gag guide
The full plot of the campaign isn't the fact that the chapel is the place of most evil, its that you need to defeat the final boss to get the key to unlock a ritual room in the forgotten mines where they you need to kill the tormented gladiator to get access to the door to then reach the altar to break the crystal of destruction to free the land
They are just one shots for DM sourcebooks. They clearly still make regular style adventures.
Adventure’s in Faerun even has its own example. And of course Dragon Delves.
Like almost every PC in my Daleands campaign is actively following an worshiping a god of their own, and only ONEs a cleric
and like thats cool I am not used to that happening
Its just good
cause DnD i feel like should be settings and stuff
not "theres a multiverse, heres the bare minimum make your own shit up"
I also have Myth Dranor as a looming like, goal for the party to work towards
Still have made up my own BBEG and plots and stuff to fill in the setting but the setting book provided me a lot to work with
I do think settings are quite important, most stories begin in one, i suppose the benefit of having a pre-established one is more world history.
Like if players wanna run games in FR they shouldnt have been forced to use third party or old edition books
T H E C R Y S T A L D E M A N D S A S A C R I F I C E.
I think that was why the WotC of 08 to 24 hated settings
cause they were old and the history was deep and engrained.
looks at SCAG and Spelljammer
I also dont want to spend a ton of work homebrewing my own setting and world if I am being completely honest, wanna focus my energy on teh stuff my players are likely to encounter
4e FR Guide being the Original Sin
so having a bunch of stuff I can structure thigns around helps a lot
I think that's sort of the fun in dnd, crafting tales of your own even in pre established stories, (assuming they don't give multi-choice reactions) It can branch off just from the players taking part in it.
Like the only setting in 5es duration that had the only good setting guide was Eberron
Until Sigil which was better than Spelljammer but not quite it
I enjoyed Theros but thats my bias and love of greek myth speaking
It did what Spelljammer officially "tried to do"
Brought new fans while appeasing old fans "enough"
Well i shouldve clarified i mean DnD settings not MTG ones added to dnd
Yeah, and a good setting book helps me put in what I wanna put in while still having fun with my players
Fair enough....I really enjoy theros though ugh its a fun setting
Like all Dragonlance got was a 1 to 10 adventure
All FR got was SCAG and modules for sword coast areas primarily
All Greyhawk got was Ghosts of Saltmarsh and other anthologies with Greyhawk adventures in them
And some new subclasses, and feat trees and some other stuff
but I would like a deeper Kirn setting now that I am reading dragonlance lol
They got a sub a lot of people probably dont know exists
I yearn for something like Pathfinder's Tian xia guide, but that's not happening with DND 🙁
Ye
Lunar Sorcery is cool
I mean current wotc might do it at some point
Maybe we get Radiant Citadel 2
But I wouldn't hold out hope for a culturally respectful Kara-Tur guide
Some of the old guys might sneak in for another Oriental Adventures 3 Electric Boogathree to create some new drama
I was thinking more the Depth and Breadth of expasion locations and fluff, more then Eastern-themed, to clarify.
Something with waaaaaay more meat on it's bones
Yeah since Tian Xia is a whole continent
Honestly, getting into dnd really opened up the flood gates of crpg for me
everybody likes art
I hope that WOTC isn't scared of doing non European Settings out of fear od doing them wrong
I respect Pathfinder for making the most american analogue of america in Golarion with no blatant bias
I'm like 90% sure that's a scam bot you're replying to, but I could be wrong.
Gwyn feeding the trolls today
prolly
Might not be a bot? I'm surpsied they are heading to DMs though thats where I get most of those messages
Cant eat a fish but you can fish a tuna
this is one message chill on me
its a new account that's constantly badgering people about art and if they want it
Hey friend do you desire to CONSUME PRODUCT? Like 9 out of 10 times it's a blatant red flag.
Well unless someone installed a chatbot into the account I doubt it
Right, I usually get those in my DMs from these DND servers lol
I would advise you not advertise here to not be smited by a mod
Admittedly in this age, thats not terribly difficult to do
This ones probably got someone directly in charge of it
Bots are getting ever more common as the years go on.
Am I real I wonder?
Do you dream of electric, polymorphed sheep?
No they clearly dream of lightning Shapechanged sheep /jk
My autognome does, not me
Werent elf and dwarf their own classes or was I misinformed?
yeah elf was a class at least
In BECMI I think they were
but i think that was basic
But in AD&D (aka 1e) they weren’t
"Father I want to be an elf." "You can't just grow pointy ears and suddenly have instinctive knowledge of swords!"
Elf, Dwarf, and Halfling were all classes originally, but not in 1e. By 1e we had Race+Class as two seperate choices to make.
It was amusing to see an Elf cannot become a wizard in AD&D
Ah...Is that why Tanis being a Half Elf is a kinda big deal? Treated as its own thing like Fighter and Mage?
No, that was more just typical Mixed-race drama.
currently reading the origonal dragonlance chronicles book, figuring out how to translate my own 5e brain into 1e vibes lol
No, being a Half Elf was a big deal. D&D fantasy at the time basically had Elves and Humans live far away from each other and were fairly mustrusting of one another. It would have been a shock to have someone come from parents of both species.
Ye cause at the time they were very LotR influenced
Wasn't Areowin's Dad a Half Elf?
Tho Greyhawk and FR got wacky
Ok so would...Ranger as a class have existed then cause I do get those vibes from Tanis though...Maybe they are more of a Fighter cause I'm not getting any magic from them
Ranger was a subclass
Last I checked Half Elf was a PHB race in AD&D
At the time Ranger was a subclass of Fighter
Half orc too
Gotcha
I think Paladin was too.
Well in 1e there were less main classes overall right?
Druid being a cleric sub too
Fighter Thief Wizard and Cleric right?
according to the Dragonlance wiki, Tanis was a Half-Elf Fighter
Yeah it was Fighterman, Magic User, Priest
Years later the Thief was added
I think Tassle gives me Thief vibes for sure
Rass gives Wizard of course
everyone else seems to be various flavors of fighter lol
At the time the game was pretty much just fighting as the main draw with roleplay being a supplement to it.
Yeah Dragonlance was after the og D&D time
I do love that Strum has beautiful armor and a curly moustache, it is a wondeful visage
And I really can see the persuasion check in chapter 3
||when Tanis has to convince Strum to run with them by saying the Lady/An innocent needs to be protected. Superseeding his code not to run from such weak enemies with his code to protect|| its so ugh perfect and in character
One thing about 1e I believe it was I liked was needing certain prerequisites met to go beyond certain levels.
Like Fighters needed to be a Lord of a country or something
Bard in an AD&D like situation reminds me of a TSR era dnd style extraction game where you could play a bard
Gotta be a Fighter, Thief, Druid to become a Bard
I went around bashing goblins and other players over the head with my lute
Druid is surprising
Idk if I'd agree with this assessment. I don't think the game was really about fighting until as late as AD&D2e. 1e characters mostly just turn into blood and guts when they try fighting things. I figure thats the game telling you to avoid that outcome and instead sneak around or speak with the monsters.
would've more expected wizard
Yeah true.
Getting those healing and buff spells
2e you started fighting after a certain level
guess that makes some sense
Once your Wizard could cast stoneskin you could sit back and watch them kill everything
With their d4 hit dice
I am going to enjoy dragonlance as a fantasy novel
and as a dnd player seeing some of the origin tropes and like, feel of dnd for playing it for so long
AD&D 2e Stoneskin made you invulnerable to anything but spells
After this I might try some of the Drizztd novels
For a certain amount of attacks equal to your 1d4 + two times your level in casting class.
It's kind of silly to think that D&D at any point, wasn't really focused on fighting. Given it's roots lay in Wargaming.
2e spells are really ridiculous
I mean you could say the focus turend from fighting for fightings sake to fighting for a purpose
if that makes sense at all lol
When someone says "dnd 2e was protect your wizard till they got to higher levels" they weren't kidding.
Amusing since old war gaming wasn’t too much on fighting either as it was mainly about communication and how it can go horribly wrong.
TTRPGs gots neat history
I definitely don't think 1e featured much "fighting for fighting's sake" as you'd simply perish if you did that
Fair
I do wonder if books like Dragonlance influenced DND going into the more narative heavy games we see today
Oilskin is a very funny spell
Basically makes rain not touch you
So you can see better in the rain
Also affects fog, hail
I was imagianing the Greased up deaf guy from Family guy
Huh Circle of Preservation Druid has some roots in Dark Sun 2e as well
I was talking about reading dragonlance, then the conversation turned to dnd1e from there and then from there old spells
There was a Wizard class from Dark Sun 2e called Preserver
Who preserved what was left of nature while also drawing from it.
Rather than just Defiling it like the Defiler
There was a spell called Hair which was basically a Barber spell
The sorceror king patron was a neat one, that I'll be happy to have published. 😄 I love me my warlocks. Gimme all the warlocks!
500 warlocks
Out of the 6 sheets I've got on DDB. 4 are warlocks lol
I think someone prefers warlocks... Just a theory...

I finaly did it!!!!
I beat murkal in honor mode!!!!
Nice. 😄
Hey, I’ve got a bit of a situation. A new player just joined one of my groups today—we literally just wrapped the session.
He’s playing a very sci-fi, futuristic character in what is otherwise a fantasy setting. The idea is that he comes from an extremely distant future—like quadrillions of years ahead—and somehow ended up back in the past, where the world is still ruled by gods and monsters.
I allowed it because I thought it could be a really cool way to show what the far future of the world might look like. But the rest of the players are pretty skeptical about it (which I get).
Now I’m wondering how to handle this before it turns into a bigger issue. Should I have him rework or replace the character, or just let it play out and see where it goes?
What would you do in this situation?
Rework the character idea into an Artificer perhaps, with glimpses of the future inspiring their engineering
Yeah it can definitely be distracting for the players looking to play a fantasy game to have a futuristic character just hanging around, so I also understand your other players
I'd talk to the player and suggest them changing their character either to a new one, or change the current one to fit the game better
Sometimes you as a DM might want to step in and say “hey, that character is awesome but it doesn’t fit this setting and campaign”.
Now, I wouldn’t do this often, but sometimes where it’s irreconcilable, you’re justified to say “hey, this isn’t the right game for this type of character”
yeah ill do that i just feel bad cause its on me sense i aloud them to do it in the first place. thanks for the opinion it helped.
Anyone here use fizbans treasury of dragons
Just keep in touch with the rest of the group, and listent to their suggestions and feelings on the matter. If it turns out to be an actual issue with then, then the new player is simply just going to have to try a different charecter. Because everyone should be having fun, not just one person.
I would rework rather than replace. He can have visions of what he was doing in the future, but have it where is character is sent back in time but not in futuristic. He is a fantasy version of him.
always
Been tempted to get it
@cinder timber yeah i think thats what were gonna go for when i speak to them. is just reworking it
Plus it will help me with making the amethyst dragon for my lawless town. As for futuristic stuff it doesnt always fit the esthetic of fantasy
I had a similar issue tbh. I think the middle ground is let them be from the future, but the character is not futuristic in a fantasy setting if that makes sense.
Meaning materials available, and having to adjust to whats available in that time?
I'd rework stuff tbh. Maybe the future is like Caveman/Post-Apoc because the villain of your campaign was never stopped, so through some X-Men Days of Future Past magic nonsense, he's sent his mind backward in time to try and help stop your villain's scheme. Maybe he's not from the future, but recieves visions from the future that offer him knowledge and guidance.
If its taking the other players out of the experience, stuff should prolly get reworked or removed.
That's a great idea, way better than what I was gonna suggest
yeah the player wants to basically be reze from chainsaw man ( havent watched it) but like the bomb devil version and is really stuck on the head piece and visuals of that.
i can very easyily make that a fantasy vibe but its the visuals hes stuck on
Thats just a bulbous helmet
Another suggestion is he can be in the past and have these vivid memories and dreams about the future that he doesnt know what they mean. Maybe, he discovers who he is and that he doesn't belong to this time as the campaign progresses!
blimp shaped helmet shouldnt be too crazy, given the goofy ass helmet shapes that existed all throughout everywhere irl and in D&D
its not just the helmet but that was a big thing for him. its this mechanical dort of vibe but i will work with him thank you both
Did anyone else get a message FR from "Joy"?
Of course bro. Also, when you rework it, try to avoid making it too main-characteresque
how do you mean? like main character syndrom stuff
nah, prolly a scam tho
Getting too deadset on emulating something from a franchise as a D&D character can be an issue
no i got one from an evelyn
this is a concern of mine tbh
Huh. Just me then.
Ah, do not do business with this Evelyn, they were soliciting on another dnd server, they are very likely an art scammer
yeah no i declined it
agreed, its easy to get wrapped up in the idea of being anything in D&D, but D&D does aim for a specific kind of "anything". If you try to be Luffy from One Piece or Real-Life Christiano Ronaldo in D&D, you'll probably feel friction with the game, the other players, or the DM.
Yeah, it's better at "making anything to be" rather than "emulating anything"
Hey I'm just getting into Dungeons and dragons after a long break of I guess you could say more important stuff and I was wondering if anyone has a campaign I can play in
You'd want to use #find-a-game as that and its subsidiary channels are where game finding is done
people probably do in #looking-for-players but those channels are like uber weird to use, so reading thru #find-a-game first might be needed
I tried but nones responding I think they reached their player limit
D&D isn't a very instant thing
It might be that (in which case, I'd try r/lfg on Reddit), it might also just be late and people went to bed
For me it's 4:00 pm
ah, in the US its anywhere from 12am-3am, so a lot of the posters there are fast asleep
And for others it may not be
And either way, expecting to find a game within a day is incredibly unlikely to pay off
Oh that's kinda sad lol I just finished making an entire character sheet cause I got random motive to play DnD lol but thanks for trying to help at least
itll take some time to get into a game. also, people usually want to make characters for the first time together. i guess its a social ritual of play
A good metaphor is that finding a group in dnd is like dating
Also so that the characters fit the game itself
So even if you've already got a sheet, it night need to be chabged if the DM disallows something
Usually you dedicate a whole session (colloquially called Session 0) to character creation, campaign pitches, content you're comfortable with, what the world you'll be playing in is like, what game rules you'll be running with. All the pre-game logistics and stuff happens then.
oh that was a metaphor? whoops /silly
Well, if you’re happy with them then I suppose it was a happy accident 😭
Whats an effect that blinds?
Oh, there are a lot
Easiest example is the Blindness/Deafness spell, choosing Blindness.
blinding smite comes to mind
are there any 5.5 species with once per day features?
Orc's Relentless Endurance comes to mind
Human's free inspiration is technically once per day
many innate spells are once per day too
Celestial revelation and draconic flight, healing hands too
there's a bunch
I have inspirations and ideas for another Tiefling. But if i make noise the kittens wake up
I want a Tiefling only campaign. But only one party member is that One human that they keep
lol good idea
Ye, be cool to see Tieflings in other classes
I usually always play the least human characters. My favorite is rat folk bc I love them so much
500 Tiefling warlocks
I forget which version lets you play as an insect but I want to be a weevil lady so bad 😭
They are the beetles with long nose looking things.
no not those but they are also so cute
Hmmm
Rhinotia hemisticta
Hows everyones day?
Hmm have you tried sleep?
Kittens bout 2 weeks old. I just fed them and put them to bed. Again
Those are a type of weevil! Acorn weevil are my favorite
I have to give them to foster. Cause i cant handke the stress
Dang, good luck then
People adopt kittens more than older cats. I’m sorry you’re having a hard time though.
Depends on the players and tieflings. But I could be the human
Gn
Thank you alot! I like your name too!
Good night
Gn
Go to bed
Might be too late at 4 AM
Whaaaat and stop drawing yaoi on my ipad???
Shhhh i fell asleep today at 6 and woke up at 9
No keep going i said nothing
It’s Good Omens and Hitchhikers guide
Is my discord app possessed? It always jumps to messages like these
Hahaha!
It might be a sign...
Don't even. Not interested.
Anyyways i had this campign planned out last winter but i lost all the paper work and map i worked on
Im sad bout it
NOO! That sucks
But when I lost my last story and rewrote it from scratch it actually came out much better
Danggg the thing there wasent one story, it was a world map with 8 smth interconecting stories, and it was dynamic so that things changed depending on how the players played.
DMing is doing god’s work. Like that’s extremely impressive.
Yeahh it was ment to be reusable and include others players, theire deaths and more, insted of a premade story they kinda make theire own yk?
Yeah I gotcha. I only did a one shot with some people to teach them about everything so I’m probably not equipped to help. But I still think you’re cool and creative as heck.
Its all good man il just start agine.
I’m gonna go try and sleep
Good luck and sweet dreams
A joke.
Had better be
Are you sombody i used to know?
Yk thr song? Il see myself out now
I did the name before I knew the song actually
Oh dang, well done ngl its like being called rick roll before knowing what a rick roll is
Is it fine if I flavor my character to appear he’s not wearing heavy armor, while still having the mechanics of it? Ac, disadvantage on stealth, weak to heat metal etc etc
Ask your DM I'd say
If i was your dm sure but ask your dm
Yeah that’s fair
Im going for a samurai wanderer kind of character so a whole suit of heavy armor clashes with the aesthetic lmao
Yk some samurai did pretty heavy armor so it dosent crasg that much but i get it
Samurai? The ones very much famous for their unique armor? (:
I have a suggestion
You could reflavor a tiefling with a maul as an Oni using a kanabo
Aren't Onis actual creatures?
I think ogres would be the closest thing to an Oni actually, but yeah I think they are
And idk if you can play as Oni unless you’re using homebrew rules
Yeah Onis are just actual creatures. They're in the 2014 basic rules
Ah
Correct, but if you wanted to play one you'd have to reflavor as it isn't a playable species.
Anyways, someone tried sending me in dms one of those videos about dnd with the same "best ranger build is not playing ranger" gag
And actually, Tieflings in the 2024 PHB are described as taking after fiends of any sort. If Oni are fiends, a Tiefling could certainly have Oni features.
It always makes me laugh a little seeing those because people keep thinking all there is to ranger is just smacking anything that moves with SS hand crossbows
"I'm going to make a very narrow definition of what I think 'Ranger' means and when the class doesn't meet my definition I'm going to say it fails." bla bla, I've heard it many times.
It was basically someone trying to use Samurai Fighter and load up on as many SS hand crossbow attacks as possible
Ah, so their definition of Ranger is "The bow is my entire personality."
Boring
I mean, you basically have to burn an Action Surge and BA to get 7 attacks when Ranger with an Assassin dip already gets 4 of those and also crits with them all
They don't realize that their initiative will also be considerably worse unless they burn an extra feat
And since this build is at level 15 minimum, they also have 2 other pretty important things Ranger has
could be interesting
Those being 3rd/4th level spellcasting
And a much better Dex save
But it's not the entirety of what a Ranger encompasses.
By the way, I did also want to ask
Why is one of the Rogue's saves Int?
Game balance
Every class got one common and one uncommon saving throw.
oh i thought u was talking about his story and such
Sure, but why Int? Why not Chr?
Arbitrary
I mean ok so maybe there was some other reasoning behind it, but as far as I know it has never really been revealed.
Nah, just some video online about some guy doing the "best ranger build is not playing ranger" junk again
oh, i see. i abandoned the idea of trying to do the best build
No, there's a difference between trying to go for a hyper optimal build and trying to do the same algorithm stuff of "Ranger so bad, Fighter make Ranger build better"
Part of it is that there’s a lot of charisma saving throw proficiencies among classes, int saves are a little less common
Do you want there to be an explanation? Would that make it more satisfying for you?
I feel like a lot of people just don't even play ranger and say ranger bad
Consider the stereotypical rogue. Ignore the rules for a second, think narrative and character. Do you think it makes more sense for the rogue to see through an illusion or for the rogue to have enough willpower to avoid being teleported?
Same. So many people just echo the internet anti-hype.
To me the difference between the two is highly arbitrary.
It is highly abitrary, yes.
I mean, sure. But Int saves are also quite uncommon. If memory serves, least common of the 6 by a good margin
Doesn't need to be. I'm just trying to unwind, possibly clear my mind a bit
Witch channel would i go to for advice with homebrew?
Well yeah - which is why they give it to classes like rogue
Too many. It's a very fun class that is a lot more of a Swiss army knife than people give them credit for
My only complaint is that Gunslinger is also ultra fun to play
Perhaps a small problem is that they make a lot of spells Wisdom save when some maybe shouldn't
A good example possibly being Dominate Person
Yeah, every class basically got one common save and one uncommon save. Rogue just ended up with Int.
Also, which effects are resisted by which saving throws is ... also arbitrary.
Agreed
Dominate person is probably a wisdom save cause it's typically a charm?
I mean, you are establishing a telepathic connection to someone and giving them orders. Basically just mind control
Wisdom saving throw
The new direction that WOTC is going with third party content feels to me like they are having their cake and eating it, too. Third party stuff gets to take the risks and innovate, while official content gets to stay safe.
I mean, sure. But there's so many opportunities for some third party classes like Artificer, Pugilist, and Gunslinger
Opportunities for what, exactly?
Just wish they weren't only third parties
Wait, Artificer is official not third party.
Artificer isn't third party
You can't even make third party paid artificer content unless you're the eberron creators
See the thing is, there is value in them being third party. Third party companies can experiment and do fun stuff that doesn't have to be as rigorously balanced, while official stuff can be less experimental, giving DM's excuses to stick to the official stuff while only allowing third party material on a case-by-case basis.
It's pretty win-win.
Well, sure. But then it becomes a toss of the dice for whether it will actually be allowed
No, it becomes a consideration of the DM and group to have a discussion about.
The more they try to shove that bg3 vampire down my throat, the more I want to scream
wym
Asterion?
I’m tired of seeing him EVERYWHERE
Fair enough, fair enough
You mean astarion's book of Hungers?
I mean he IS one of the most popular characters that came outta that game soooo
I will have to admit, though. It can be a little bit annoying sometimes, but the VA deserves all the praise they get
True the VA nailed it
He was in that live play earlier, they put him in a book, now they’re digging him up for another live play (supposedly they’re gonna do a Netflix show he’s gonna be in also but will never actually get made)
I didn’t like him in the game, I didn’t like him in the book (that was weird) and him being in the live play just means I’m not gonna watch it
It's very handy for a DM to be able to say something like "official stuff only" or even "PHB only" when they are just starting out so they don't have to know every single book out there.
yeah exactly
also people are also already confused by what "official" stuff is apperantly so like
muddying the waters even more wouldnt exactly help
Oh, yeah. You should have seen the campaign i dipped out of session 1
DM was under 18, friend convinced me to still give it a shot. He improvd everything on the spot
wym everything? encounters too?
Just .. made up rules as the game went on?
or that yeah?
Really became a problem early when giant spider could shoot webs at the dex based cleric, but chose not to because he claimed to be too lazy to understand what 5/6 recharge meant
Didn't make up rules, but like a sandbox setting that had no plans. Only added things as time went on
Fuel to the fire was that everything would be streamed on Twitch
I mean thats completely fine imo
okay yeah thats a no from me
tbh you dont need an elaborate world setting
you dont have to be playing in a planned out fantasy novel for the game to be good
It was something we all consented to, but the last thing I need is to think about that sort of incompetence streamed
And while this is true, it was a symptom to a larger problem
and that larger problem is what now exactly?
I mean yeah the "wont learn mechanics cos lazy" is a problem, but the rest seems fine?
There weren't any goals, no practicing what/how to say things, not even understanding pretty easy things about monsters
just maybe not your type of game
Is the advice in the phb useful?
in general? yeah
or do u want to know about sth specific ?
Ah mb, i meant to say dmg
Going 100% improv. And while being under 18 isn't inherently bad, it's a hit or miss for quality
tbh my first session started with me introducing like 4 possible plothooks (fully off off improv bc I didnt plan anything yet)
and then thinking about where I wanna take things post session
also fyi, the plothooks were nothing the players knew could be potential plothooks, just things for me to explain things retroactively
I'm conteplating buying it as i already have phb and mm but feel more material to help with dming could be useful
I mean the main problem with 100% improv in my eyes only arises if they are unfamiliar with DND in general
mainly bc u need to balance/ plan combat encounters to some extent
I see I see, I mean theres plenty of nice books that add different things
so it also depends on what you want out of the book
the things that will "help you with dming" the most are probably modules
as they give u access to "prebalanced" encounters, stories and sometimes also spells/races or certain items
Either way, I just dipped. No luck finding games for Sunday, but did find 1/2 for Saturday
also if you want I could dm you about some stuff I like @inner silo
I currently run lmop which already has most of the stuff prebuilt, but my next campaign i want to make my own instead of using a premade, but i think i will likely struggle with it
I would appreciate that!
I mean its gonna be fine, dont worry too much
fun fact, there are more air dragons in the sea
then there are sea dragons in the air
I feel my adhd hittinm pause
That's because air dragons can't breathe underwater (and orcas probably can't shove huge creatures)
Wind drakes
Sea serpants
Leviathan, tiamat, cetus, hydra, echidna, scylla.
And im too tired to go further
Dragons is a term. But theres more technical names. Even from mythology
Okay i go sleep again
It is funny seeing an orcas make something go from Navy Seal to Air Force in 3 seconds
Wait the murder whales do that??
Kobolds are dragons too now
Depends which type you make
Ancestry and such
But i love broader ideas and shoving stars and libraries into a drink mixer with a kobold that could have blue with white vitiligo
Oh, fig. I forgot to go back to bed after feeding the kittens. Gn part 2
Does anyone else kinda just want to play an adventure and then get this sad feeling when someone says that it's for beginners?
Me and one of my groups were trying to find out what campaign we'd want our Dungeon master to run. Now for some context I hadn't really played alot of Official Wizards of the coast campaigns aside from stuff like Tyranny of Dragons(currently in) and witchlight carnival (the other campaigns I've played were either homebrewed or systems like the pokemon tabletop or the monster hunter books). So being someone where I wanted to play more official adventures I recommend "lost mines of phandelver" because I thought it'd be fun ya know?
Then one of the other players said (and this is the exact words, copy and pasted):
"kindergarted campaign suggesting ahh"
So obviously this did make me feel a bit hurt so I kinda just wanna know, if anyone else has been in this situation? I just wanna be a player in more official adventures even if they are for beginners, I just don't want people judging me for it or saying stuff like that.
(Sorry of this was a sort of rant/small vent)
The line about "The unmatched power of the sun!" is the funniest thing
Don't let other people get you down. Official Campaigns or homebrew campaigns are on equal footing when it comes to fun. It just needs the right players and the right DM for both.
Trolls be trolls
I find prewritten campaigns (official or no) are better to help new DMs learn how to DM and can provide a support stucture, but it's false to say that they are somehow "lesser". An experienced DM is only empowered by a preritten campaign, since they can add their own spin on it.
Is switching weapons a free action ?
You can draw or stow a weapon once per turn for free. You can also draw or stow a weapon once per attack when taking the Attack Action.
Reference to what Ophid said here:

Oh alright tysm
Yeah exactly. I'm happy someone understands, I have only been playing since like 2022 but I still am considered a beginner by alot so that's why i just wanna play more straight forward objective style campaigns (the group with that player, our dm has a Homebrew problem and the campaigns always last like forever with no Goal so it just gets boring fast)
Having an overarching campaign goal is very important
The exception (sandbox and westmarches style games) need very proactive and decently experienced players. And they're not "better". They're just a different style of play.
So my warlock's character sheet may be getting out of hand... she made a dropdown (this is a google Sheet) to indicate whether her familiar is summoned, shouldered, or dismissed
haha, neat
there is nothing more agonizing than clinging to a character concept you like and not having anywhere to use it 🥀 i will live however
There is, getting new cool campaign ideas but already being busy with long term campaigns
I imagine...
PbP campaigns are harder to reliably find than I would think
Oh how I despise unpredictable work schedules
Or having really interesting and fun characters, and then the campaign being on hiatus
I almost did join a campaign recently but got dropped before session 0 because DM ended up biting off more than they could chew LOL
glad it happened then as opposed to like right before session 1
Waited for like two months, right before session 0 the DM blocked and ghosted everyone
bruh
Right? Lol
I had 5 campaigns, three on hiatus, one cancelled, and the other is the one I DM
the curse that ails anyone who dares become DM......
Last time I was in a campaign was when I was like 12
Did a one shot a few years ago though
Oh yeah
The group was a bit too big for my liking though so the entire thing kinda blended together
Hii
I'm actually planning to run a second game now instead with all of my free time
I just gotta get my head in the proper headspace
I also got alot of free time, pls lemme know if you actually start one.
Is it normal for a person who gets so used to playing short/long campaign to have difficulties in adjusting to West Marches system?
I'm not gonna lie I have no idea what that is
The games I run are a bit tougher than others, but if I get around to it I'd post an LFG
Same lol
Maybe West Marches are well known more for DMs instead of players
I play seriously so I actually like tough games
I don't like min-maxers, though, I host tough games but not that tough
I don't really care much about the mechanics of DnD I just really like making characters and having them interact with other characters
West march is I believe is a be there or be square kind of game
Yup
Btw can i become a dm with free resources? I really don't think so tbh
depends what you want to run i think
You can
you can but i wouldnt recommend it
To be honest...I trust this mindset to the players I know well irl
I like making custom additions to creatures, like giving guards one level in fighter so they have masteries in their weapon, etc.
Youtube is right there.
It’s easier with the PHB or DMG, but you can
Wdym?
Like I can put the time and efforts, I have a good imagination, but currently unemployed so I can't buy resources
Sometimes....picking stuff for fun could be....no fun if you have no member with optimal build in your party. Having at least one optimally-built player could help
I don't mean I neglect the mechanics
I know but did anyone had success here with this?
Not being a min-maxer ≠ playing the worst character of all time
I just focus on the character itself first and then make their build afterwards
makes them more flexible if the group needs a specific class or something
I still remember I died the earliest in a meme party
The character concept that's been haunting me recently could be run as either a ranger or a rogue depending on what is needed (i would prefer rogue but yknow)
Being a pacifist Wizard with unlucky Rogue, glasscannon Paladin and "let me solo them" Monk. I still remember that campaign until now
How can you be "unlucky" on purpose
Zero modifier Dex
i just realized she would sound terrifying to a group if i described her at a basic level. rogue that doesn't trust anyone completely specced into stealth sounds like a red flag LOL
That's... still not unlucky
It does. Mostly because as a DM I would be worried that this player would be disruptive of the game.
You can very well still roll high
It's why it's important if I join a game with her that everyone is aware that she'll start out somewhat abrasive; I would plan on her warming up to the party over time
I have backup character ideas just in case it doesn't work out
I recently had this idea of playing a peace domain cleric monk multiclass... Seems kinda fun tbh
I have one character idea that I'd really like to play
yeah peace is crazy good as a dip for like anything really
John Farmer, 13 in every stat, just an average guy
Former lone wolf who is smart enough to know she can't sabotage the group without putting herself in danger
what class would you be
Fighter, of course
It's actually above average given commoners get a 10
13 average for adventurers
If the DM would allow me, I'd play it with 10 in every stat, but I'm afraid I'd be a burden to the party.
My 2nd choice for a character is a severely mentally ill jester that speaks in riddles and metaphors who used to be in a royal court
It is 2024 so wouldn't be 1 level dip
Painfully nice but off-putting
Ahem. Real mental illnesses are not for flavoring D&D characters, had to say it
but i want my characters to be relatable to me :3
It's an amplification of projection
Tbh the subclasses being at level 3 universally was like the one thing I wasn't hugely excited about in 2024
Then Druid 1 is the go to exept for wizards in which case it’s wizard
There's a time and a place for IRL disabilities in TTRPG's. it can be done well, but ya gotta be careful with it
It isn't something I would do as a quirky joke thing
It's a fun idea, but being intentionally a burden is not what I plan on doing for ol' John Farmer
Speccing in every stat sounds like a nightmare
Tricky to do. "Warming up to the party over time" to me reads as "I plan on not participating very much in roleplaying very much in the beginning of the game" which has a tendency to really slow down the progression of the game, and that can kill the momentum. With tricky personalities like this I like to suggest the character having one trusted friend in the group that they know and trust before game starts.
Honestly you could just play a utility spellcaster and probably do really well but yeah if you wanna be fighter that'd be a no go
That's why I'm playing a martial 🥁
All I need is decent strength and con and I'm good to go
She isn't uninteractive, and sees most people as alien to her so would end up needing to interact in order to understand a lot of things normally seen as commonplace
You should level into every class as well
Hah! Never
She's just a metaphorical and literal fish out of water
Might multiclass into Valor Bard though
What class should I play for my upcoming campaign yall
My last character was a swashbuckler rogue
Very enjoyable
Bard
Only class I've really played is a shadow magic sorcerer in a one shot
It was pretty fun
Sword bard?
Might I ask, what else do you know about D&D? Do you watch like campaigns of it?
Is this 2014 or 2024?
Monk!
Which ones more fun
2024 monk!
Back off! I'm recruiting them to the Bard side!
I played one third of a campaign, one oneshot, and have watched people play it yeah
Played a minotaur drunken fist recently 👍
2024 Valor Bard!
Eloquence bard!
Hows that play
Sure. Still seems tricky. I'm not saying you couldn't pull it off, but I would have my reservations.
I understand the general mechanics and how sheet mechanics work
Eh second fav class, I can compromise
It's the martial of bards, use a shortsword with a scimitar
Can only study so much without having games to play in though
