Both were made Savings Throws,
Counterspell just did it a bit better on behalf of the players
Feel like thats the best way too
Honestly having been introduced to DnD with both editions released already, 2024 is objectively more fun . ((To me))
Weapon masteries alone man. Making it mater which weapon you use is so huge to me
You gotta cover your bases man
I am a DM and I embrace nerfs to player options. Nerfs are sometimes need. It is okay to lower the ceiling just as much as it is to raise the floor.
Because new Counterspell doesn't get rid spellslots, NPC's don't typically have spellslots, so they lose the spell
Counterspelling a player is less worrying because they don't completely lose a spellslot
and less damage too 1d10 less
I'd personally not call '24 5e a new edition.
Revision, maybe. But it was a gradual update from '14> Xanathars > Tashas > Mordys > '24.
Before when getting into '14, new players were also recommended strongly to get Tasha's too, and Mordys/Xanathars as well.
'24 basically put all those updates plus extra in the core books.
What you will see soon is that you can get different attributes on weapons anyway. So it does not matter that much.
I have a quick statement to say order of scribes wizard is now my new favorite wizard subclass as it makes me feel like more wizard with my wizard (even though it isnt op it feels good)
There is less difference between '14 and '24 than there was between 3.0 and 3.5. And definitely not enough to be a 'new edition'.
When I say that I treated it like a new edition. I mean that for my players and tables. We effectively treat it as such.
Meaning player options start with the release of 5e Revised PHB and move forward.
agreed, the charicter sheet had to change alot between those two, i have players using 2024 and 2014 options at the same table with now issues
I like innately having unique properties on weapons
It also for the most part standardized their power level so there’s less noticeable “power creep”
and the saving throw i can kinda see it why its there, lets not forget that spells are universal thing, not only player.
Being a player and just "counter spell, cry about it" must not feel nice, making it a saving throw is okey
You can get around it with fighter i think. I will look for the rule
The revision of 5e is closer to the revision of the 2e AD&D system that happened in 1995
Inflict Wounds being a save should be demonized more than Counterspell being a Save /silly
hiiiii guys
I love that there were 'No, it's not a new edition' and 'no it's not 2.5' even back then in the Dragon Magazines
The first page of the '95 PHB is a letter from the edition stressing it is not 3rd edition.
am new to dnd guys how do u get into it
Level 9: Tactical Master
When you attack with a weapon whose mastery property you can use, you can replace that property with the Push, Sap, or Slow property for that attack.
meh, i can see why its made like that. Wont deny the logic behind it.
Still adding a save i would let it like it was, 3d10. It was a whole nerf
Hold person into an auto crit inflict wounds on a plauyer with a priest enemy was DEADLY, i loved it
I will say that the new summon spells are really bad. Just overall way less powerful and stunts player choice by taking what used to be a selection of dozens of statblocks down to a single one
That's a take.
It's less work for everyone at the table and they still have worthwhile effects
I liked doing that "work" on my PC's. picking out what animals i wanted to summon was fun.
New Conjure Minor Elementals is incredibly powerful
It is unfortunate for shure, i feel 5e was simple enough to still allow the options. But you can always just use 2014 rules
yeah but it's not a summon spell; it's an aura spell in 2024
Still a conjuration, still summoning an elemental, just buffing the caster
it's a buff spell with some flavor text about elementals
To me a lot of the trimming down is a lot like the Elder Scrolls evolution.
As the games have come out there have been less and less player creation options. From skills, to classes, to spells. Morrowind have levitation spells and designed its environment to use them. Oblivion had full on spellcrafting allowing some truly broken stuff. Skyrim, had none of that.
It sucks that Skyrim does not have Spear Skill Tree or Medium Armor. But it is still the better overall game. If it wasn't they would not keep selling it.
Also, it's the Conjure spells that got mostly reworked, not Summons
To be completely fair, the new Conjure spells are just plenty more applicable at higher levels than just summoning creatures a low level AOE could just erase
And each of the TES games have their own rabid fan base. Morrowind had a mod start production in 2002 and it still is not done. Oblivion was just reintroduced to a whole new generation.
Much like how DND players have an edition or version they experienced first, they are more likely to favor that one over all else.
they're just so much more limited in scope and function compared to something like summoning 8 CR 1/4th or lower beast statblocks
See I disagree that Skyrim is a better overall game. The lack of options makes it a less good role playing game in my opinion, and it continuing to sell well has more to do with its accessibility than anything else.
Not saying the old one wasn't fun, I love my Wildfire Druid fighting alongside his two giant owls lol..
Which are Celestials in '24 now >:/
I agree though that your “preferred” game or version is mostly based on what you grew up with
5e is also lacks a lot of options older editions had but ramped up its accessibility.
Ehhh. 5e lacks a lot of options but also added a lot more options (removing race and class restrictions). I don’t think it’s a perfect comparison
My problems with Skyrim compared to previous TES games goes beyond character creation though
Older Editions (And older Elder Scrolls Games)
Were indeed clunky, but that doesn't mean they're not as valid or good options as the recent editions (and games)
IMO Morrowind had the perfect balance between roleplay options and accessibility (though in terms of clunkiness it left a lot to be desired)
I am not saying they are not valid options either. Some people still believe that Morrowind is to this day one of the best computer RPGs ever made.
Just like some people will die on the hill that v3.5 was the peak of the table top game.
I dunno, I grew up with 2nd AD&D and have no interest in going back
I yearn to play Morrowind.
Maybe because I'm a psychopath /j
I've played one game of 3.5e and it was enough to make me not wanna go back to it again
Time to go back to wizards having a d4 hit die
Is morowind the one where you walk out the town and a guy falls from the sky.
I grew up with 1st ADND and 2nd/3rd edition by proxy lol. I too have little desire to return
Meanwhile I grew up with Morrowind and Oblivion and I am firmly in the “Will die on the hill that morrowind is the best”
Also more DnD Related the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages, (Their Wiki) got access to Juilian Lafay's notes on the DnD 1e Game that inspired the creation of Tamriel. It is a fascinating read.
Yes
Oh really? That’s super cool I’ll check that out (I love UESP)
Might be a hot take, but Morrowind always felt meh, I like oblivion a lot more though
Skyrim is fun, but magic in it kind of sucks
Youre the first person I’ve ever heard call morrowind “meh” lol. Personally I love how unique the setting is
When you say magic sucks in skyrim do you mean destruction magic or all of it?
We might wanna go back to D&D chitchat
All.
I also played oblivion first, then went back to the other one
It is hard to deny that Morrowind plays like ass. Setting cool, story great. But like playing v3.5 it can suuuuck so bad.
Fun fact; the reason arena snd daggerfall are free on steam is because they can’t legally sell them bc they take so much from DND
Dnd continues to make things lots of money
I love morrowind but I won’t deny that lol. The graphics for the characters are also hilarious even for 2001. I’d like to see a remaster personally
If I could just get a remaster of all the subclasses we’re missing in 2024, I’d be happy
It is not a legal issue. They did it for the 10th anniversary of Arena and the 15th anniversary of Daggerfall. They were free on Bethesda's website for years through DOS BOX long before steam.
I’m aware yeah: I meant them being free in general. Notice that they haven’t made morrowind free
So how about that D&D?
Right right uhhh…remember negative armour class lol
Dogs and Doors?
Fun game, honestly
Who plays that game
My campaign is finally starting back up this week now that the holidays are over
I hope they stop remastering subclasses. Or they do it in one book and be done with it. Its kinda lazy to just refresh when they could make new things.
I get to play my hell conquering Centaur Barbarian soon
they slaughtered conjuration wizard with the remake too
I’d like for them to remaster subclasses but also add new ones
I mean, new subclasses seem cool, but I do want some to return (and some are just bad flavor wise)
Like the spellfire sorcerer, mechanically cool, but I don’t get the flavor behind it
I’d like an even mix of new and revised subclasses
Same tbh. I want them to remaster them all in 1 fell swoop.
Can't wait for the Updated Transmutation Wizard, it looked immaculate in the UA
Something about Winter Walker Ranger and Knowledge Domain Cleric being in the same book just doesn't feel great
oh yeah true Transmutation wizard UA was pretty cool looking
I question their choices of domains to remaster first tbh
Along with noble genie paladin… like clearly WOTC has favorites
I love new Knowledge Cleric 🔥
For me I am more excited for new things. A lot of 5e adventures were just remakes or rehashes of stories that are decades old. For me as a DM the best ones where the ones that were new.
I just can’t wait to see if they actually publish the Reanimator artificer, that one at least looked cool thematically
My Knowledge Cleric is a Tortle fella :>
Honestly same, a full “one big pass” remaster would fix so many weird edge cases. If they did it cleanly, I’d want three things: (1) power brought up so summons feel worth a slot again, (2) choice brought back (not 1 statblock forever), and (3) table speed stays fast so it doesn’t turn into 12 extra turns
Transmutation and Conjuration are some of my favorite spell schools so win some and lose some i guess
They wouldn't do it all in one book
Because Money
Something Something
"His Greed sickens me!!!"
I’m a magic player, they’ll rarely do what the player base wants
You had
Princes of the Apocalypse - Temple of Elemental Evil
Curse of Strahd - Ravenloft
Tomb of Annihilation - Tomb of Horrors
Eve of Ruin - Rod of Seven Parts/Vecna Trilogy
They kinda did Volo's and Mordenkainen's Tome remasters in 1 book, with MMM
Yeah, that’s the realest way to put it 😅 Transmutation and Conjuration are so much fun because they're essentially “break the rules” schools, where you turn things into other things, move things around, and summon problems/solutions on demand. Even if some spells got nerfed or streamlined, you still get absolute bangers in both schools for creativity alone.
Waiiiit...
So, Tyranny of Dragons, basically the standard Dragonlance story ported to the Forgotten Realms using the cult of the dragon as a stand in.
Princes of the Apocalypse, okay yeah it's a rehash of temple of elemental evil.
Curse of Strahd is literally an expanded remake of Ravenloft.
Storm King's Thunder is little more than Against the Giants expanded.
Tomb of Annihilation is Tomb of Horror.
Eve of Ruin is...What is it actually? A mix of rod of seven parts and those Vecna adventures + a tiny bit from everything "iconic"
5e has always been a bit nostalgia bait
Yeah; also just so much more interesting to me to conjure a thing that does damage for me than it is to do damage myself
I'd love to fight the Princes of Elemental Evil one day, they seem like cool enemies/boss fights
I honestly like some of the new stuff they've been doing
Radiant Citadel is banger after banger. I wish they did more like it
Rime of the Frostmaiden, and Avernus, were so good.
Dungeon of the Mad Mage obviously is just Undermountain. No originality there.
I don't need old adventures ported to 5e, I can just use old adventures with 5e rules
Tales from the Yawning Portal, Ghosts of Saltmarsh, and Quests From the Infinite Staircase were all rehashes.
when Red Hand of Doom (3e) calls for Hobgoblins and a Black Dragon, 5e has Hobgoblins and Black Dragons
Oh red hand of doom, that was a good one
i'm kinda new to MTG actually, can i show you a commander game i recently played?
Still think the best 5e adventure is either Rime of the Frostmaiden or Chains of Asmodeus
But yea, the creatives at the DnD team have proven they can do original stories that don't rely on old characters or dungeons.
So more of that plz.
Lost Mine of Phandelver getting snubbed
Phandalin, a town so good, its featured in 3 separate adventures.
Honestly i'm really tired of not being in dungeons in my dnd games.
I want more dragons personally
I’ve been out for awhile, so I’m catching ba k up on all the new stuff
and conjure woodland creatures is a ramming emination/aura
and conjure animals is basicly better flaming sphere
I want more dragons IN dungeons personally
And Phandalin is like the Stage 4 of this rehash trend as it got rehashed as part of the same edition.
Same 😤
yeah this is part of my problem with the changes-
Btw can anyone suggest a good dnd campaign on YouTube where they use irl or online miniature to showcase the scenes? I love VLDL dnd playthroughs
I just want to eat dungeons
My dm made us fight a dragon in a cave, it was very scary lmao
Realllll Phandalin is peak
If I could live anywhere in a D&D world, it might be Phandalin
more mechanical effects that invoke there being a bunch of creatures there without literally rolling stat blocks and bogging down initiative/action econ
maybe not, cuz of the horrors that happen there often
The dragon cut off the exit and filled the room with poison fog
Definitely depends on the era. I would not wanna be a Phandalin resident during the Shattered Obelisk era lol
Dragons+Water/Lava is my favorite thing
Drag people underwater and have the dragon tear them up
Yeah but the flavor text of there being creatures without any actually being there doesn't really suit me, someone who enjoys playing and running summoner builds
Come play druid, we've got draconic transformation and tsunami :3
Nah I'm on Wizard timing rn
Shadow wizard money gang
I've got Ritual Spells out the wazoo
Join us on the sorcerer side
is it weird that i kind of want to hang out with myconics
You get more cool features and less flexibility
Let's see I'm on
Wizard, Cleric, Warlock, Fighter, Barbarian and Artificer timer
heavens no, I like having a big spell list
They took all the fun ritual spell scroll searching away from Pact of the Tome and ritual caster q_q
Not me, I like planning out my list ahead of time
I want to be a swiss army caster
Any recommendations on character sheets that aren’t the dnd beyond one
Cleric/warlock x2/sorcerer right now for me
The regular PDF character sheets usually
paper is best honestly
and gave pact of the tome 2 incredibly lacklustre branching Eldritch Invocations
at least they made ancient secrets part of the base EI, but they cut it off at the knees at the same time
Ancient secrets is really the main reason to pact of the tome anyway
All the class I'm playing atm
All pf my characters, except my Barbarian and Artificer, are all far too nice lmao
Except my Warlock, he has a VITRIOL hatred towards demons
So no boxes just write everything down on a blank sheet of paper in a semi organized way
Drops Yugololths /jk
There is a paper character sheet you can print.
I use pdf for editing mine
I've thought of a good idea for a backstory for my fighter. He wishes to be the greatest fighter that history has ever known. Think Zoro from One Piece.
Paper character sheets come with the PHB and basic rules and box sets
no, like a paper character sheet you print out. The Player's Handbook and Basic Rules will get you the 5e character sheets
i print off the blank ones from the PHB
Hive minddddd
I have something like 15 PC's and 2 of them are non-wizards
make more paladins
One day I will play every single paladin subclass
Well, except for oathbreaker (I’m too nice to want to break an oath)
Those double crit guiding bolts were glorious
I'm not really into paladins in 5e
Play the new one, it’s still pretty fun
Oh yeah the 2024 Paladin feels so much more fun to play.
I did like nova blasting things, but I’m coming round to the new one
I don't like martials much
There is where you are wrong buddy, you arent only breaking an oath.
When the king you gave your word, your devotion and faith turn into a ruler, a tyrant
When the king that was your ideal of justice and kindness turn into what he promised to Fight and Eradicate
Your oath being shattered would be wrong? Would you turn your back to the ruler or to the people that carry the hopes and ideals of a better future.
It doesn’t help that they get so little attention in a lot of campaigns
Besides Turn the Fortune’s Wheel and some other minor ones
And still, you can be an oathbreaker and still be good
Like most of the yugoloths in official campaigns are just individuals or small units used to side with devils or demons
Mechanically I just don’t like their abilities, flavor wise I don’t want to play a pc who has an incredibly grim back story
The subclass does require you to be evil
The subclass says you gotta be evil in its description.
Na, isnt about a grim backstory, i like to put that dilemmas in some classes that use rules. Paladin is one of those
I'm evil for the fun of the game not because my subclass tells me to be
It’s why it’s in the Villain NPC section of the DMG after all.
If your oath was to justice mercy and the protection of the innocent and the king becomes the thing he swore to destroy then staying loyal to him can become the real betrayal. In that moment the question isn’t “Do I abandon my word?” it’s “What was my word actually for?” A ruler is a person an oath is supposed to be a principle
Okey, i got 2 sides of the coin replying in the same place
oathbreaker being required to be evil is dumb imo
i feel like it should depend on the oath and the reasons for breaking it
Tbf, it’s aura is called Aura of Hate
Remember that Oathbreaker is a misnomer. Oathbreakers aren’t just paladins who broke their oaths, they’re paladins who broke their oaths with the explicit intent of pursuing evil.
Again, an Oathbreaker is not a paladin who broke their oath. It's a paladin that broke their oath to pursue evil ambitions.
The point is you do not become an Oathbreaker by just breaking your Oath.
Breaking your Oath just loses your powers.
Oathbreakers are ones who go further and make deals with evil beings.
You’re not breaking your oath you’re keeping its meaning. If the king becomes a tyrant loyalty to him turns into betrayal of the people. An oath to justice isn’t a chain to a crown
Why do we keep having this conversation btw?
Yeah but i was mostly going for the Oath to the crown
alright i appreciate people correcting my misconception
Oathbreaker ≠ Breaking your Paladin Oath
Because I don’t like oath breakers
"Oathbreaker" is a bit of a misnomer. It should have been called something else
That’s the only paladin subclass I don’t really want to play
i can start an alignment discussion if you'd like /j
damn, bad pickle then
im still new to 5e admittedly
probably because we get an influx of new people all the time who stumble across these ideas/builds and have no idea we've already tread this ground.
You hate oathbreakers because they're evil, I hate oathbreakers because once a paladin always a paladin. we are not the same
If the crowned ruler becomes a tyrant, you’re not obligated to enable them you’re obligated to the realm’s stability and the people’s safety. At that point the “Crown” can mean the line of succession the council/regent the lawful courts or the charter/constitution of the kingdom. You can oppose the king while still honoring your oath by treating it like “I serve the Crown not the man.”
I mean… my lawful neutral aasimar who is ok with stealing would have a word
remember back when druids were required to be true neutral
Wow, that hurt my heart
It also doesn’t help that a lot of new D&D players come in after playing BG3, where Oathbreaker is a potential unlockable player option that doesn’t require alignment
Oathbreaker notably is not in a player facing book either.
It’s in the Dungeon Master’s guide for making Villainous NPCs. Just like Death Domain cleric
not to mention the guy who gives it to you also is a lawful good oathbreaker lol
True, but that is something that depend of who read it, in my side i think would be like i said, it can be in yours and both are totally right
that might be the necrotic damage
i will admit this is part of why i was confused
Nah, it’s the wizard who hit me with fireball “on accident”
Yeah, that’s fair, it does depend on how the oath is framed in the story/world and both readings can be “right” because they’re rooted in different definitions of what the Crown actually is
BG3 ≠ D&D. While they are similar BG3 does a lot differently.
that's the difference between me and other wizards; I'll hit you with fireball on purpose
BG3 doesn’t really have any mechanics enforced by alignment. If you want to be good, you do good things narratively. Same if you wanna be evil.
(and then probably heal you with my other class dip because i don't actually like hurting my party)
Which is why in theory, an Oathbreaker can be good in BG3
and the only oathbreaker npc you come across is one of the leaders of the "good" factions iirc
i think the only one thats kind of alignment dependent is lolth sworn versus seldarine drow, and even then, you dont pick an alignment
Yep, i like the idea of "a good guy using dark powers", it let you more space to creativity for me. The temptation of the dark powers corrupting it or the good guy using them even knowing what they are, because its what he can use and nothing else.
Right. And you could still be an evil Seldarine drow or a good Lolthite drow in BG3. Because again, the mechanics of the game don’t really force you to be good or evil.
its in some way like the Chaotic good, the person want to do the things right, but will find any way to make it.
Yeah, that trope rules because it’s basically morality under pressure instead of “good = shiny, bad = edgy.” If you want more creative room give the dark power a real cost and a real benefit: it works when nothing else does but it always asks for a little more than you meant to give
Yeah that’s peak chaotic good energy: “I will do the right thing… I just refuse to do it the approved way
Oh yeah this is the exact text from the DMG on Oathbreaker.
“A paladin must be evil and at least 3rd level to become an Oathbreaker.”
It’s ok, I’m on noble genie paladin with fire as my chosen type, so quarter dmg for me
Yep, that line is real. In the DMG Oathbreaker is written as a villain option you break your sacred oath to pursue dark ambition/serve evil and the book says you must be evil (and 3rd level+) to take it
I also still don’t like that the 2024 Oathbreaker is still a Paladin
Well it’s not out just yet.
With oaths being so intrinsic to a paladin’s progression, I feel like a paladin who refuses to keep an oath just shouldn’t be a paladin anymore
Yeah I forgot to mention it’s in UA
would like it have more "dark" powers instead, like warlock spells instead of still holding the same list
maidenless paladin 💔
but i guess that would be too problematic, i still think that its okey because corruption a character is something i find interesting in a story
Go paladin/warlock multiclass (or take Shadow Touched/Magic Initiate: Warlock) so you keep paladin core but gain dark warlock-style spells
I’d honestly make Oathbreaker a Fighter or Ranger subclass or something
Flavor it as a hunter of divine folk or something
Nah it’s not “too problematic” corruption arcs are chef’s kiss for story just keep it player-driven and agree on limits so it stays fun for everyone
Talking about Paladin, thinking about letting my Oath of Redemption player have resistance to the damage taken by Aura of Guardian
DnD players in the 5e era have, in my experience, generally not liked anything mechanically that imposes something upon their character they don't agree with.
Oathbreaker and Evil is a big example of that.
Some things needed decoupling like stats and species options. But not everything needed to be mechanically consequence free. Imo
I feel similarly
Agreed
I think ppl are used to quicksave/quickloading in video games and want similar Get Out of Jail Free cards in D&D
Restriction breeds creativity after all.
Yes. Limits should be a thing.
I know players that would probably throw a fit when their nat 20'a can't change the world automatically.
I find CR and D20 amusing, but they have set up some bad and incorrect expectations for actual, at the table, typical d&d
I once had a player ask if they could just end a deal with a devil whenever they wanted. I like consequences in my D&D, so that was a swift No.
I mean they could, but Im sure there is a consequence lol.
I had a player quit because an archer used their Archer’s Eye damage with a critical hit
(Basically adds a d10 like smite adds damage)
yeah, maaaybe
WAIT!! there is range Smite?
It’s an NPC ability
Add a d10 to a missed attack roll or a d10 to range weapon attack’s damage
Consumes a bonus action to use.
ooooooohhhh... i wanted to do Victor from Vermintide 2.... his special its a blessed shot that do a lot of damage...
You could just give special ammo for that.
I am big on consequences tbh. Both in terms of mechanical things and in terms of role play. I cannot play with a player that consistently attempts to never face accountability for their actions.
Thrown weapons in 2024 rules is the closest we got
Ahhhh, btw how was your day?
and then scream from the bottom of my lungs : " The crime is your foul existence, the sentence is death!"
im hating it, too warm. Summer roast me like a chicken and not even season me properly
Oh...meh, it work
Hi hating it, I’m Nugget.
And yeah it’s been so hot lately
Depends on the ability used
Because thrown weapons specified as a Ranged attack when thrown.
So the smite has the say “Melee weapon” and not “Melee weapon Attack” or “melee attack”
southern hemisphere?
temperature has been in the negatives where i live lol
Yep.
Went the weekend from a storm, winter to now summer, there its a sun capable of toast anything
mmmmmmm.........special ammo and a bless using it in that gun shoot
Went over 40 where I am
my condolences
whenever it's cold all i wish for is for it to be warm, and vice versa when it's hot lol
-# I got whiplash there, I use Celsius
for now im closer to 30ºc, coming back from a weekend where we had from 12 to 19. This is going to be a long week
Well we have snow here lol and I love it
I dont know how is snow, never saw it or touched it
we were meant to have a 'wall of snow' and it snowed for like 10 minutes then immediately rained
12 Celsius
Maaan, making a campaign around surviving in idk, Deep north Canada or smt
The long dark kind of thing
get eaten by wolves on night 1
I could survive it
haha yeah i've got an extreme weathers table for my campaign when my players travel through deserts, you've just reminded me i ought to do it for the cold bits too
I really would like to share images of where I am?
got spawned in Timberwolf Mountain, guess who have like 6 wolfs around, 2 bears and 1 jaguar
thanks but im good, i will see someday snow
Snow is so pretty
Mmm... how to balance a survival campaign....
Ahhh I got it
If people knew how to drive in it that would be better
Because magics can make food out of nowhere
allow cannibalizing other PCs
i feel like most other TTPRGS do survival a lot better than d&d
No.(?)
I mean just watch out for the lizardfolk
🧐
any specific examples?
Balance it by making resources matter without making it miserable: use a clear “day loop” (food/water/shelter + exhaustion) give multiple solutions to every problem track time/weather as the real enemy and scale encounters so the threat is usually attrition + hard choices, not constant death fights
not that i've played them, but i believe mothership has a good survival aspect
d&d is the only ttrpg i've played but it doesn't do survival very well RAW
and most homebrew survival mechanics revolve around random tables, CON saves and exhaustion
Water.
Also they are using slots to do that, so now you can bully them harder with them having less slots
i would not want to be a water genasi in that party
Also weather
create food and water, then immediately long rest to restore the slot?
i would honestly alter or straight up ban any food-creating spells in a survival based campaign
Cannot long rest until 24 more hours. And weather affects you each hour.
still though, a 3rd level spell slot creates a day of food and 3 days of water for a party of 5
And after those 24 hours you lose the slots again
Because you need food and water for the next day as well
im kinda basing in my experience in The long Dark, good game
You can get weapons and fight back but injuries arent the only problem, item durability too like in every survival game, they seems made of the worst materials possible
Cold, hunger, some eventual threats like bears in the area, cougar, wolves.
I can put a x10 in the animals yeah
Track their hunger, water, temp and sleep.
Weight too
well yeah, but i don't think something as simple as a spell should be able to solve one of the core pillars of a survival system
Make some kind of durability in some stuff.
The thing is, what is the goal? Escape the place? find the source of such chaos in that area? etc. etc.
Classes and fears make it easy.
Also, mending and some tools to help with item longevity.
make them be part of a group that try to save people and help them in that area or smt would be a way to approach it....
Also wild animals/monsters too.
So there would be some interaction between npcs and them, but in other way making it a whole campaign of them alone surviving in such place is something that tempt me
Yep, that is the problem,
how i inactivate hunting? Make the meat of those wild animals give temp hp or smt would be a way
The magic food not filling too much too
i did solve this issue by basically telling my party that any magically conjured food would only be nourishing to the one who conjured it
so while it's not completely useless, it isn't as useful as it originally was
i like that one ngl, it can be a way
in any way, will see slowly how to aproach into a campaign like that
i do have a relatively indepth system for a homebrew campaign i run
Do you do the same with Elementalism & Create/Destroy water though
our general ruling is that any kind of nourishment created magically is only nourishing to the one who conjured it. it's not come up yet, but i guess so?
Love the Long Dark vibe just keep it survival-y without turning it into homework. Track Hunger/Thirst/Warmth/Fatigue + weight and make durability the real limiter (gear wears down on bad rolls/overuse but you can patch it with scavenged parts). For animals, don’t spam fights use a threat clock: wolves harass bears are rare “oh crap” moments cougar is an ambush and most packs back off once hurt. Each day should force one tough choice (push on tired vs camp carry loot vs move fast hunt vs save ammo) and smart prep should clearly pay off
my survival/exploration checklist is like:
- make random encounter tables
- don't bring the party to the immediate area of whatever objective, and have them need to look around a bit to find it
- add chase sequences
- add tracking quests, encounters,
- hide things along the path for the party to potentially find if they poke around
- add obstacles like rivers that have overflowed their banks, weather, hazards, etc
- use the Extreme heat/cold rules
- Roll for weather every day and have that matter if they're going to be outside; perhaps have it impact the disposition of NPCs (IE. heavy rain, fog, snow, hail, and wind grant Lightly Obscured)
- make slightly longer, more survival oriented treks where the party needs to move through less developed areas and have to find/conserve food/resources
- actually keep track of rations/water/feed and have the druid/ranger burn slots on goodberry and create/destroy water or the Artificer/Cleric/Paladin on Create Food/Water if that's the plan
- encourage the use of pack animals if they have to travel far
really a few of these should be standard in every game but it always gets handwaved
especially weather and actually requiring that the party roll for foraging or burn slots
You could run a survivalist campaign in the Forgotten Realms. Plenty of places where there is no town for hundreds of miles. I recently ran one set in the Ride/Tortured Lands. Big fun. Rangers shine so much in those games
Easy thing to do for the weather, don’t roll it every day, instead roll up a calendar. Saves time.
A week usually helps but you can go how you want.
Which is why some of the easier to implement bits of that list need to be more commonly run
Really helps your Druids, Rangers, Scouts, etc have a moment where they feel validated picking the fun naturey class
Guys, is a level 8 spell that deals 18d8 damage to a single target and then cc's with a choice of stunning or blinding an enemy balanced or too strong?
Closest equivelent is going to be something like Befuddlement
Skipping Exploration does to your ranger what skipping social encounters does to your bard.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2618832-befuddlement
damage is a bit high, but it's not terribly off base for an effect at that tier
there's 2 supermassive deserts that are perfect for this
Could also be balanced around components and casting time
except skipping the former is basically standard practice and skipping the latter breaks thigns so isn't really done
skipping the former similarly breaks stuff tho
it does but they do it anyway
I'm basically considering running druidcraft to force weather checks
the game does assume that you do all 3 pillars of play. when you don't, problems arise
I would commit several white collar crimes to get a survival campaign in the Purple Desert of Raurin.
I really want a trip through the shadowfell honestly
I'd love an adventure that dealt with the Upper Planes at all
Anauroch is the least interesting desert of Faerûn and I will die on that hill.
It is a hill no one cares about but I will die on it
all my homies love the Icewind Dale
I love ice wind dale because of drizzt
Actually, I think the Icewind Dale still has snow, so its not a desert
Not necessarily the area itself honestly
I love cold so I love icewind dale
Also, Netheril is the least interesting lost human civilization in Faerûn.
I love like gray areas, so the Shadowfell is probably one of my favorite places
Give us some Jhaamdath love, we love a human civilization of Psions.
That would be a great book to introduce the class too
I reslly hope they experiment with nore classis
Dedicated Psionicist is great, I want more class chasses to build off of
The int mod in general needs more love, so I’m hopeful they bring psion in soon
i would be fine if the psion stayed shelved, i just want more good campaigns to run
More casters fixes this issue (only one of them has to actually do it)
And take turns per short rest
Give me 5e Warlord WOTC I beg of you
I wouldn't bet on it just because they apparently WOTC a while back said they wish they had less classes
Forgor which employee
how time relative was this to the UAs?
Apparently they gave in with Psion
prolly Mike Mearls. he doesn't know how to shut up
I tbh liked 5e's design ethos while he was in charge a lot more than JC
It was during 5.5 UAs iirc
TBH that was back in Perkins and Crawford were running the show on rules dev.
Things are very different now.
See: Executive Producer saying in 2023 that Dark Sun is probably never going to return. And then in 2025 getting a very clearly Dark Sun UA
Any classes you guys think are "missing" from DnD?
(Must be an age old question atp lol)
Battle Commander / Warlord
What sorcerer subclass are you if you're like an oracle or oneiromancer
A martial support that supports not via magic spells.
Full martial support, ic.
Like Banneret
But a full class
But not a fighter exactly
Warlord absolutely
I mean, none of the subclass options involve fighter things besides using the same resource.
I get what you mean.
A full Psionic class
Yeah the closest we have (for an entire class) is monk, and that’s a beeeeeg stretch
One thing I did not like from Tasha's on ward is instead of giving us a Psionic class with a bunch of subclasses. They gave Psionic subclasses to a bunch of classes.
Clockwork Soul btw
Is that like steampunk? Sounds steampunk
its somewhat steampunk, it definitely has a lot of the clockwork aesthetics, but its mostly about balance
Now im curious which class would have the least effect on gameplay style when cut
sorceror imo
Like warlocks are very unique with shortrest spellslots compared to other spellcasters promoting a big difference then other casters
Probably sorcerer or ranger
That was my first assumption as well
Mmmh, ranger is kinda the ranged half caster where paladin is (in the fantasy im aware of ranged paladin existing) melee half caster
Warlocks are cool in every other way except for gameplay
Ranger, for all its faults when it comes to class identity, does play pretty different from all the other classes in my experience
Do all martials play vastly different?
Depends on your definition of Vastly, but yeah
the thing with warlocks is that most of their spell list is really bad for their spell slot situation
you gotta know how to pick the right spells to actually take advantage of those slots
Seems the most concensus does seem sorcerer is the 'most obsolete' class
They all have something that makes them different as they all have some unique feature
(I do still love sorcerer it was my first character)
It hurts that this is mostly true
I dont think any class should be cut btw. I want more classes
I don’t think sorcerer is the most obsolete, it’s just very similar to wizard in how it functions, but with less spells
Oowh yeh im not asvocating for any class cuts, i was just curious based on a earlier conversation about 'too many classes'
Hardly think there are too many classes myself
Thats kinda the point though, large part of the sorcerer fantasy can be played as a wizard
Eh, I’d say flavor wise they’re much different
Honestly I like sorcerers more than wizards mostly because wizards seem more basic
Yeh but wizard is about as iconic as you get for a class
True
The company is named wizards of the coast after all
That's why it would never get cut
Can you make your fighter poison themed in any way?
I would assume you can don't think there's a subclass for that though
buy poison
What would be the best acid spell to learn for it?
If it's a fighter preferably one that's close range
Do you have a species in mind?
Acid and Poison are different things. But theres Acid Splash and Poison Spray for cantrips
hm. IG you can try to make Eldritch Knight Poison based. Not that I would reccomend it
Yuan ti ofc for free poison spray
Reccomending a poison build would be mistake 1
Green dragonborn could also work thanks to the breath attack
Could be very fun thematically but from all i heard a pain mechanically
if someone wants to do it, its up to them. Im giving options then giving my opinion
It would be just a charisma dex fighter and you dump every other stat
what does CHA have to do with poison? I would think CON
build up immunity and such
All the Yuan ti spells can be cast with you charisma if chosen
ah, right, spellcasting
And suggestion can only be cast with charisma which is great I hear
would it still work if I just played with a white grid and not a map
Also, same. (It's Ranger.)
It's my favorite class but I'm not satisfied with the rework (why I made my own homebrew one)
It's not the best at anything rn 😭
If it was 2014, I’d say sorcerer, but by 2024 it’s prob ranger
It’s good at being…something at everything
Jack of all trades master of none . . . Hm . . . I wonder if another class is somehow still better at that . . . 🤔
(Bard)
The worst part is there’s two that come to mind before Ranger
Bard superiorityyyy
In my mind it’s a more martial bard
Where is the rest of that phrase 🙁 its so important lol
Better than a master of one
But often is better than a master of one-
Cmon
I’d say rangers are almost just a magic version of rogues, but without any of the cool bits
Bards are magic jack of all trades, rogue is martial jack of all trades, ranger exists
That being said I do like ranger
Around as much as rogues
I mean rangers are like 80% fighter /70% rogue / 50% Druid. thats not so bad
Ranger is fighter but free range
I don’t hate rangers, they just kind of exist in comparison to other classes
I just wish WOTC hadn’t screwed then over in 2024
I always get so stuck when I choose between martial classes, especially for more dex based ones
I wouldn’t say they got screwed over tbh
They certainly could be better, but they’re not that bad
But you play ranger and get a dragon or another monster as a pet and then you're satisfied with being a ranger
While not as inherently interesting as other classes, I quite enjoy mine and I don't feel like I fall behind in any aspect
When half their features care about hunters mark (which should’ve been an effect instead of a spell), it certainly feels like they did
Imo, and what I did with my homebrew, Ranger's identity should be Hunters. What they hunt and how they hunt should be what their subclasses should answer
Drakewarden and beast master go hard. They’re my favourites after Gloomstalker
To be clear, I think WOTC just made good decisions with a lot of other classes, not so much that rangers are bad but other classes got good changes
all the classes got significant power boosts or Qol upgrades compared to tashas. Rangers got a sidegrade, two steps forward, two steps back.
Fair enough, from what I've seen they were a little neglected but I do still think they're good fun
I don’t hate the idea, but hunters mark shouldn’t be a spell
Especially monk
Monk da goat
Ofc
And you can play ranger subclassed into bladesinger wizard to actually be a good bladesinger
Thats a new one ive heard
Or you could play bladesinger, and be a good bladesinger
Isn't it sucky?
yeah ranger/bladesinger seems significantly worse than just bladesinger
Nope
Kensei 2024 when . . . Then Gun monk will become supreme . . .
It’s still a wizard, but you have more AC now!
and one of the better subclasses too
They mean the multiclassing, not bladesinger
Pure wizard bladesinger makes you feel more like Gandalf with a sword then a forest elf singing into her daggers to make them glow green and knifing de foresters
They did?
gandalf does have a sword
and he uses it too
he fights the Balrog with a sword
They mean the former is pure bladesinger, the latter is multiclassing
That's why I used him as an example
okay but feeling like gandalf is not a bad thing?
Bladesinger with Martial Weapon Training for Gunsong
…Gandalf has a sword?
I just realize that "wizard with a gun" is totally doable with 2024 bladesinger
Man I really need to read up on lotr lore
They just get left inside the factory singing into bullets that the troops need
Hello
You haven't read or watched LoTR?
I genuinely don’t remember him using a sword but I’m probably just dumb
he does fight the Balrog with it for example
I remember he had a stick or something he cast magic with
Bladesinger doesn't feel enough like Gandalf for me though, or any sort of gish for that matter. the blade dance thing comes with too much built in lore
He didn't use the sword after turning white If I remember correctly
I'd rather take some fighter levels for a far less optimal but more satisfying build
Wait no he did
He does in the final battle
Is it in the movie? I haven’t read the books in a decade
yes
Tiras minith too
Huh I guess I completely forgot about that
Yes, even if you just google image search Gandalf you'll find plenty of pictures of him with a sword
isnt it Minas Tirith
You don't even need to specify his sword he has it a lot
Gandalf barely even casting shit
He ults couple times per movie
Wizards in LOTR don’t use magic that much compared to every other fantasy media honestly
Gandalf is actually an Aasimar Fighter rather than a wizard 😝
gandalf doesn't just have a sword, he's got a magic sword, Glamdring
Aasimar Valor bard imo
Guys, guys. Gandalf is DM PC.
wizards in lotr are basically aasimar
Too much magic
He’s a mage/fighter multiclass but like the old ones that could both be level 20
or, hear me out - he's an NPC that doesn't have class levels
Maybe he’s a homebrew wizard
He only ever does healing Hands, necrotic shroud and light bearer
Eldritch knight 20 but with the new past 20 rules that let you get infinite feats
We know he has heat metal.
maiar are also not aasimar. they're considerably more potent.
That's already the post 20 rules
His campaign has been going for a long time
thats a boring conversation ender though. trying to make a build that gets as close as possible is fun
Fr I love making builds based on NPCs
That one system for sidekicks fascinated me
Can you polymorph a villain into a mutating flesh sack with their brain and consciousness intact there regenerating every torture they receive?
Builds for those would be hilarious
MY take why valor bard:
can do fightery stuff and strong magic, but prefers to mostly support his allies. good at most things. charming.
I don't think you would be able to unless your character had already seen one, because then it's meta gaming.
Or am I thinking Druid?
Gandalf has said he knows over 200 spells just for opening doors.
So you have to go to the under dark as a side guest and have a torture mage teach you?
You can't use polymorph for your specific request because it alters mental ability scores.
Ayo I just joined I wanna play DND but my friends are in a different country can we play online anyway?
THATS a druid thing, not here
Yes. There are many tools for online play with the most popular being Roll20.
Anyway, theoretically then, but also, Polymorph only lasts an hour
Oh thank you kind sir
polymorph only lets you turn things into a BEAST anyway... dont think "mutating flesh bag" is there
What do you mean a druid thing? I'm talking about polymorph and polymorph specifically mentions "The target's game statistics, including mental ability scores, are replaced by the statistics of the chosen beast."
referencing the limitation of only being able to change shape to something they have seen
So is petrification the go to then? You freeze them in really bad moment
I see, thanks for clearing that up. I was confused because my original message made no mention of that either.
Ig, but while petrified it's unaware of its surroundings
True Polymorph
I think they mean
This would prob be a monstrosity
For obvious reasons
possibly
It is ethical ragebait one player using stuns on him specifically for 3 rounds?
Is Sentinel, Crusher, Shield bash, Heavy armor master good feats for a tank paladin
If yes which of these feats should i pick first
if no which of these feats should i replace
No
Though if you all are fine with doing this to each other no problem
Yes, Sentinel good
i think they have already heavy armor proficiency
no wait, training, nvm
if we are all good then yeah, obviously i will. In a non serious moment
I'd replace some of the later feats for ASI's personally, to bump up cha for aura of protection, but to each their own
Excuse me sirs can someone explain to me how to use roll20 I want to play with my friend who's in a different country we don't have a dm
so Sentinel first?
and are the other ones good to pick on other lvls or should i replace them?
yeah 😅
They're not bad, but don't forget to maintain your stats. They matter
Also what subclass?
yeah, proficiency would help you in that, if you have access to one too, they tend to be giga expensive
Charger can be good for some Control of area and mobility too
Tough is a very simple but nice origin feat if you can get it without going out of your way for it
Roll20 is a virtual substitute for a physical battlemap. It's a little difficult to explain how to use it in one discord message, but i can direct you toward YouTube tutorials for more help.
As for finding a DM, you can ask your friends or have a look in #find-a-game
Idk if Savage attacker would apply to Smite, it would guys?
Iirc it doesn't
It's for weapon attacks so wouldnt apply to the smite part of it
Thank you kind sir I would be truly great if you do
meh, still good a second chance to that dice damage in the weapon so you can do a big burst damage faster
Ma'am*
If you just search "how to use roll20" on youtube you'll probably find what you need
Thank you I would do just that
for now my char has
S-16 (+2)
D-12
Co-15 (+1)
I-10
W-10
Ch-16
and my origin feat is though
didnt pick a subclass yet, im still lvl 1
was thinking picking The ancient or Devotion at lvl 3
any idea of what kind of weapons you would like to mostly use?
If you choose devotion you really want a lot of charisma
Is there a way for me to activate certain modifiers when certain conditions are met for a homebrew class in D&D beyond? Or do I have to write out the effects and speak with my DM about it.
longsword or warhammer with shield
or just something + shield
Depends what weapon masteries you want, but longswords are pretty good
Longsword doesn't work with crusher
yep
yeah only works for bludgeoning weapons
and sap for longsword that mean disadvantage on that creature in its next attack, okey okey
If maestry on it
Sap is probably one of the best masteries imo
Cleave is also pretty good
yep, the whole weapon maestry is really good for any martial class, mostly fighter
Still do damage even on a miss iirc
if i go for longsword, which feat would be best in the place of crusher
@stiff rock
Slayer would be the equivalent to crusher for it
Sentinel would let you opportunity attacks
Shield master would let you receive less damage for spells too and you have the shield bash
I’ve finally begun the campaign where I’m playing as a bard for the first time ever
I really underestimate how good sap is until I play my current tank fighter
slasher?
"Slasher"
Copied and pasted. I guess the wiki im in now can sometimes make mistakes
Disadvantage and having more than 15 AC feel giga good
I am the wrong person to ask when it comes to feats lol, i'm more a DM than a player
add tactical master to the list and you can do a lot
I've not been a player enough to know what feats are good
All roads lead to Mobile
Na, tough better said, its too good having extra HP
Durable seem like a "second wind"
Lucky is pretty good
Can we all agree it sucks when so called “friends” try to sabotage your opportunities?
If you take lucky you get a hidden -5 debuff to all your rolls thats just how it is
they always say stuff like "I know your in there! Please fight it!" But they're clearly just upset that amulet of the blood god chose me and not them. it's not my fault it asked me to push them down a canyon either.
What's your red flags in a D&D DM or group before and after you join in?
ok thx
so this what i have for my lvl2 paladin
S-16 (+2)
D-12
Co-15 (+1)
I-10
W-10
Ch-16
Origin feat - Tough
Fighting style - Defensive
my char is a warforged, (+1AC)
is using a shield and longsword, and is wearing ringmail
in total he has 18AC
so at lvl 3 i will pick the ancient subclass (or Devotion subclass) , at lvl 4 i will pick sentinel as my first feat and at later lvls i will pick "Shield bash, Heavy armor master, Slacher/shield master, does that sound good?
@glass granite
Oh is that a reference to that video?
When your party forbids you from banging the dragon
Enough said
Looks good to me
ok, thx for helping me 🙏
Has 5ER changed warforged much? I know Dhampir stayed relatively the same
oh true you can get a fighting style
Theyre Constructs now
In his human form right?... right?
Certain prices are worth paying.
im loving duelist for fighting style, that +2 damage to attacks feel giga good
oh mb, should have mentioned it is 2024 rules
is there something off. im still new, did i use a 2014 ruling? 😅
no no, the mistake is mine, dont worry
i forgot they get a fighting style, still seeing that you can get duelist or defensive and both are good for the weapon//shield idea
Unless you considerate interception or protection too
I’m not saying anything, but when I stabbed that innocent old man 63 times with a wooden stake, he died
i used for one session dagger // club in dual wielding and god... the idea was good, the numbers not so much
Stil dealing like 18 damage per round if i land everything but the damage i could get is higher
Yeah, natural causes obviously.
If someone get stabbed 63 times and dont die i would be concerned
oh, im still confused about this i get conflicting answers from videos
some videos say im a construct and some say im not (because i have soul/ im sentient)
Nah he was definitely a vampire.
Creature type =/= has a soul or not
I mean you do know that if your not a vampire stakes can't kill you
But the change to construct is a recent update
Yea ghosts are undead but are quite literally just a soul
Okey, first of all.
What dont die if you stab its heart with a stake?
Second, what a shame that garlic dont work on DnD vampires
oh yeah i was also thinking about interception/protection
which of these 4 is the best
duelist, defense, interception or protection
garlic isnt always assumed to be part of most settings
Strahd would've loved red lobster garlic biscuits
oh
yeah, lets say that you arent using a greatsword for justify great weapon
Bows or crossbows
Stuff to throw like daggers, javelins or spears and you wont do this enough times to justify it
Unarmed....
Meh, i would say maintain the vegies and fruits teh same.
add some if you want but maintain the base so there is not so much problem
Duelist and defense are the best of these four.
that doesnt make what i said not still true...
oh no, i wont deny it. But meh, unless teh DM specifically tell you that the vegies and fruits are changed. Most of time they stay the same
Less hassle
Wont deny that the idea of some "fantasy" fruits isnt appealing.
But i like my figs
i definitely would not survive without my spices
Duelist if you want to do damage, if you’re not intending to one hand a weapon and use a shield, defense is very good
ok, thank you all for the help 🙏
Like, if you’re intending to do 2h weapons, I think defense is better overall than great weapon fighting
almost same, i remember seeing one book full of homebrew balanced foods//spices//drinks and god i want to get it
It’s hard to find permanent boosts to ac separate from armor
Remember: dying is suboptimal and every chest is a mimic.
Have fun!
Nah, the house is a mimic
Na, my wife is a mimic.
We love each other a lot
And the party is full of doppelgangers!
I think mimics would be the first monster to ever be domesticated by the thinking races.
thx will do 😄
The party is a:
A warlock that is acting like a cleric (he doesnt know his god is a dark deity)
A fighter htat is made of mimics (they love going to adventures and eat new stuff)
A Ranger that isnt 3 goblins under a leather armor (classic one)
And Finally a kobold that is a sorcerer who think is a dragon (no one have the guts to tell him he isnt a dragon)
That's a combo
Idk I think between the isn't always and the most fantasy settings you're not saying much here. Yeah there's probably settings without garlic but the majority of them have it to the point where it's a safe assumption, multiple editions even have a price listed in the PHB
That party sounds exhausting /joking
yep, if the ranger die they will come back but interchanging the positions. They can do it 3 times
The only garlic I know of is the tongue of an alligator gar. Thank you fantasy settings!
Damn. If my players made a party like that, I would just make sure they'd all die.
Is the warlock the dad?
No fun in life
Session 1. Just, like... Session 1 starts, you all caught dysentery, you're dead. Make new characters
"Guys, first session and you all are lvl 1. Fight Tiammat"
what?
TPK speedrun bro..🥀
Session 0, you all are going to die.
I mean is he the one keeping them manageable?
Not even dark souls was that hard
The responsible one
to what? the whole party?
Yes
Seems manageable to me
At that point, they would be all adopted from the same family, an orc lady and a dwarf that have a bakery
Why not?
That seems chaotic... I love it
Yeah, at that moment, would be just the most silly adventures possibles
I ran my first ever D&D session tonight with 2 of my players which has now become part of how they met each other. There's been life issues with the other players at the minute and instead of delaying further, I decided to reward them with only gold and some items as part of this mini-adventure I wrote last night.
It went realllly well! I designed a one shot that places them in a district that clings onto the City of Sharn from Eberron, and they're waiting in line to send their own parcels (this was a great way for me to get them to try and improvise when asked about what they're sending and who to)
Then the Parcel Master asked them to send 5 parcels, each in a different zone of the district (Rich Area, Skyship Docks, Slums, Bustling Market etc) and with each area I designed a specific type of encounter that will allow us to understand how the game works, if they prefer combat over puzzles, how to improvise in situations.
I love it! They managed to give the parcel to a flamboyant Warforged named Canvas, who refused to accept it and will actually complain to the Parcel Master unless the party handles Giant Rats, to which the party didnt know giant centipedes would burst out and attack both them and the Rats. The Fighter one shot the Centipede (I need to adjust this) and the Druid talked the Rats into peacefully moving out.
At the Docks, the Druid managed to successfully complete the puzzle to operate a crane whilst the Fighter held on to the chain from the crane in hopes to moving him onto a Floating Skyship as the Captain was drunk asleep (he was another recipient for a parcel). I improvised that he was sleeping butt neked faced down in his quarters, so the Fighter threw the parcel at him and left 😄
The party members are both Married IRL too so it was a funny dynamic.
Just add an average human Joe who's the only normal one and see him get tortured by all their shenanigans
Gotta have the straight man
the Most normal guy being a druid that live in the forest and the parents of those kids promised him their best and giga exclusive pie.
To the point he accept and almost get killed lots of times but being totally worth it for that pie
That seems wonderful 🥺 the others missed out
Ah, it was perfect to be honest! I'm not good at group speaking, so this is putting me out there comfort wise, but I love them both and I've always created stories/adventures when playing Modded Minecraft. This just seems like the natural step.
No one is normal in your universe 😭
That is teh worst part, he is the most normal of all them.
The pie is that good and rare.
Special recipe that in the bakery is loved by everyone. I can even add that one of the most biggest clients they have is a dragon that come in human shape and buy a piece of it every time there is some available
Well, I now make the attempt to start a dnd group in my college, wish me luck fam
helll yeahhhhhhhhhhhh
Awesome Alaster!
That seems wonderful
I'd wish you luck but you'd just decrease your chances
I love some low stakes adventures too
Very glad to hear you had a great session!
tbh I'm not even sure if the dnd group there has official dms already or if they're going to be looking for some, I'm just hoping the latter
That's basically the plot of isekai restaurant but with bakery
though it's been more innactive recently so who knows
I did generate art using google gemini to help think of spaces etc
And I eat that plot Everytime (pun intended)
Idk what is that but i might just add that idea to a campaign i can make
Bad Google, bad (i'd rather use Chinese ones or just see what's on reddit) no hate I just don't like Google and Microsoft but that's off topic
It's an anime where someone from our world restaurant is connected to a fantasy one where cooking is underdeveloped and two of his patrons are creator dragons who are basically the gods of that world
oh that's okay! I needed to brainstorm ideas quickly as I had to write a 4-5hour oneshot over night 😄 google gemini is pretty clunk, but it generated some artwork that I could build from and create my own stories.
Petition for WOTC to rename to sorcerers of the coast since they’re the cooler casters anyway
oh, i was thinking in more like a dragon that liked it, maybe some ancient, maybe not, just for the bit.
Here I is. I grabbed a Halfling Rogue premade just to join
question: in terms of Puzzles, what do you guy's love/hate? I had a puzzle which was essentially, you gotta press 3 colored crystals in the order depending on the riddle.
I fookin hate puzzles. I solve them all with a hammer
But I suspect my character feels differently
Not the hammer
Maybe make it that he has passive magic or something (basically he perfected his craft so well he transcended)
Is there a server for audio..?
Na, the dragon would try to hide himself because his own pride cant admit he love a commoners meal
Dragons only eat gold.
We do not have voice chat channels on our server.
Fart
You could potentially see if any servers being advertised in #looking-for-community have voice chat
The word and the sound
hi everyone ^^
What a coward, a real dragon won't hide his desire
Hypothetically, how would a conversation between a Druid and a Sorcerer go if they're trying to one-up each other in magic?
Sorcerer is gonna win lol
One has the greatest spell ever made and the other doesn’t
"Look, I can turn into all of these animals!"
"Cool, I can summon a dragon at will. Go next."
That is true.
I have always imagined sorcerers being cocky individuals and full of it
They are the few things to have inherent magic so
Paladins have it too, you don't see them all cocky lol. Well, not most of them (looking at a certain sport triathlete subclass . . .)
Paladins have magic due to their oath
. . . And who made that oath?
Oh, you got your magic from nature? That’s cool, but how about being a nepo baby instead
The Paladin but it follows strict adherence and often also comes from a greater deity
All the good perks, and we get a/c
A sorceries is the only true inherent, they don’t rely on anything else besides being a Nepo baby
But also paladins are the best class in the game so it’s hard to compete
Sooooo.... Water Walking. Let's talk it. Because I can see this going several ways: surfboarding with no board in a killer wave and looking totally cool til some deep sea monster emerges from below and CONSUMES you, and/or getting absolutely pummeled by waves and having to make constant Balance/Athletic checks, and/or the waves knock you over and you keep having to resurface to try and get your footing again.
My hearts says yes, my mind says no 😭
Whats the question
The logic I follow with Paladin's magic origin the same as Power Word spells, where they just embody and enact an Oath completely.
That’s on you
Look now, I’m a big pally fan, but we can also choose to accept reality too
The question is how Water Walking would actually work out on the open sea, with major waves
Like, boat-consuming waves
The sea monster has nothing to do with that. Best focus on waves yes
Could you walk through a wall coming at you at 20 miles per hour
It would probably be dm discretion difficult terrain all the way to impossible skill checks
You’d hit the wave and go to the top
Bc if your in water with water walk you jsut go to the top
yknow how people go on those funky houses in the Fairground and there's that wobbly floor part and they just faceplant because they literally can't stand up 😄
Cant you still submerge if you want to?
I mean, that's another good one, yeah. Like, if you're Water Walking, water is treated as a 'harmless solid surface', but then a GIGANTIC WAVE crashes on you. Do you just.... float to the top harmlessly? Do you get flattened by what your magic is treating as a 'solid object'?
Is it selective, maybe, so that you can submerge / stand as you please to avoid these issues?
The Players Handbook just reminds me of when I used to read Policy Wordings when I worked in Insurance. If there are no specifications or word definitions that outline X can/can't happen = the DM can make that call 😉
If it says harmless, to me that means the magic magically absorbs shock
Like a magic bulletshield would make the impact of bullets magically harmless
Free Feather Fall as long as you land on a liquid
Hmmmmm true
Just carry a Bottomless Jug and pour some out as you fall
Honestly what a weird wording
"Harmless surface"
Does that just mean it wont pull a knife on you or does it literally mean damageproof
Because if 2nd, then its minecraft featherfall time
I didn’t say harmless
....wear Water Elementals on your feet, no fall damage
I just said you float to the top
so.....walk on water. Is it just the water surface, or could you swim down 20ft, then select that current plane as your floor and be able to walk along?
I thought they were quoting book
Id definitely say surface or bust
I don’t think the book mentions water being harmless to you just you’d float to the top
needs a bucket
gotchya!
It’s the surface, you’d float back to the top
XD
24 book says harmless solid ground, quote
Walking on water - Could you walk on a Cloud? I need to think of these dumb questions now before my players start lmao
I view that at it saying the walking part is harmless but you can drown in water
Follow-up question: when Water Walking, would it even be possible to even dive into the water?
Is a cloud a liquid surface?
Has anyone run any WOTC Modules without a DM. I have a friend and I trying to play without a DM (i DM enough lol and we want to run an adventure "together") I have a lot of the modules and mainly running an adventure with limited social but more exploration and combat
Clouds are a gaseous surface, not liquid.
You see, I got daddy's magic and thus I am far more superior!
.....true true.
spells do as they say they do
Yes its defined
Google it
It specifies this
BA to swap and falling will always result in diving
what
Bonus action to transit from walk to dive
And falling will ignore waterwalking
where are you getting that
@bronze wave This is actually kind of funny because in my main campaign I'm in, my character (a kobold draconic sorcerer) and our minotaur paladin: oath of glory, are basically having almost daily arguments because they worship opposite deities lol
Water Walk doesnt have a BA in it at all
Thats the first time this website lets me down
24 Water Walk:
This spell grants the ability to move across any liquid surface—such as water, acid, mud, snow, quicksand, or lava—as if it were harmless solid ground (creatures crossing molten lava can still take damage from the heat). Up to ten willing creatures of your choice within range gain this ability for the duration.
An affected target must take a Bonus Action to pass from the liquid’s surface into the liquid itself and vice versa, but if the target falls into the liquid, the target passes through the surface into the liquid below.
It doesnt mention this elsewhere
I dont know if they made it up or of its from an add-on rule
No, you had it right. LEGACY Water Walk has no BA, but it's added to 24
No, but snow apparently is.
However, the 24 Water Walk is missing this bit:
If you target a creature submerged in a liquid, the spell carries the target to the surface of the liquid at a rate of 60 feet per round.
ooh i didnt realize it was updated to have that
Well meta wise any full caster is the best classes but I just like paladins
Fair. I just thought this convo got funnier on my end since I can relate to the context a lot 😂
Fighter is better than any caster class
Actually, it's a good thing they removed that bit from 24 WW or you could just kill anything with the bends from ascending that rapidly.
But hey, at least the minotaur has yet to punt my smoll kobold away out of anger!
Not a physics sim
reminder that dnd doesnt run full physics simulation
Newspaper yourself
a super react for taht 😭
Ok at least newspaper neverend too since they said the same thing
And have made a minor spelling error
welp, back to putting the statblocks i made into homebrewery from my notebook
"An affected target must take a Bonus Action to pass from the liquid’s surface into the liquid itself and vice versa, but if the target falls into the liquid, the target passes through the surface into the liquid below."
So, if you fall unconscious into a body of water, you are unable to come back to the surface because it requires a Bonus Action, which you can't take because you're unconscious. Falling into any body of water while unable to take a BA guarantees that you drown.
damn
Does waterwalk last while unconscious though?
doesnt say it ends, so yeah
Interesting interaction then
Waterwalk is very situational compared to it's younger brother, landswim.
Meld into Stone?
No, I was making a joke.
Ok senior pink
Senor pink
?
Kinda a loser but still
Senor Pink is a character from One PIece who had the ability to swim through the ground
Does anyone know where I can get some notebooks for cheap because I got an idea to make a themed notebook for every class but I can't find any
He's so hard-boiled
Like that video game Land Sharks
D&D has Bulettes
Tbh I was talking a Ninja Turtles Knock off but those count too.
And more recently bulette pups 😍
Jeff!
I feel the same way abt Bullete pup I do Abt Jeff. And you don't wanna hear what I feel Abt Jeff. . .
My dad is failing all of his persuasion checks against my mother right now by lying about his blood pressure. (Hes type 2 diabetic and his work sent him home because of it and they contacted her about it)
Gotta love it.
Oh youre one of those people
Vro is a war criminal, you CANNOT deny it lmao
Youre right i dont wanna hear about it
i love jeff
Agreed! Shark is a flavor you can't get elsewhere.
This might belong in #non-dnd-topics
bro what is with all the people making jokes about eating sharks is eating sharks a common thing and nobody told me
Shark-fin soup is a very common delicacy in Asia and other various countries, however it is often unethically sourced.
Let's nudge things back to D&D please
This getting off topic lol
anyways bulette pups are also cute im sure
Hey, so, do y'all actually get to use Heroic inspiration? Like, the fact that it now replaces any roll has a surprising amount of utility
Or does it not get given out often enough at your tables?
I give out inspiration at least once a session. (Although, to be clear, it doesn't replace any roll, it only works on d20 tests [attacks/saves/checks])
My only PC atm is a human so I get to use one
It does replace any roll in 2024
If you (a player character) have Heroic Inspiration, you can expend it to reroll any die immediately after rolling it, and you must use the new roll.
If you gain Heroic Inspiration but already have it, it’s lost unless you give it to a player character who lacks it.
I give it once at the end of sessions and have the players vote who gets it
And I sometimes give it for rlly good rp or gameplay
It's all rolls in 2024e
There's Inspiration.
Then there's Heroic Inspiration.
HEROIC INSPIRATION
If you (a player character) have Heroic Inspiration,
you can expend it to reroll any die immediately after
rolling it, and you must use the new roll
Most people refer to Heroic Inspiration as Inspiration
oh wait I had it the wrong way around
Maybe it worked that way in 2014
My bad gang
One of the other good things about being Human
I want to play a Human Wild Magic Sorcerer with Heroic Inspiration. One day maybe
Better yet, get a Champion to feed you it every turn by overcapping themselves
(yes this is pretty late but it's fun to imagine okay)
Unfortunately a champion fighter only gets inspiration if they start their turn without it
Once per Long Rest early game is plenty for me. Wasn't there a feat that grants you one if another uses theirs? Mix that with Musician~
What about crab people
"During combat, you can give yourself Heroic Inspiration whenever you start your turn without it."
Heroic Inspiration with Advantage or Disadvantage is interesting
Because you MUST take the rerolled die regardless.
When you have Advantage or Disadvantage with Rerolls, its not that you must take the reroll.
The rerolled result is still between one of two to apply advantage or Disadvantage on.
They actually have a specific thing called out for Adv/Dis, just a bit hidden.
When you have Advantage or Disadvantage and something in the game lets you reroll or replace the d20, you can reroll or replace only one die, not both. You choose which one.
For example, if you have Heroic Inspiration (see the sidebar) and roll a 3 and an 18 on an ability check that has Advantage or Disadvantage, you could expend your Heroic Inspiration to reroll one of those dice, not both of them.
If you rolled a (1 & 2) with Advantage.
Rerolled 1 --> 19. It becomes (19 & 2)
Result: 19.
Ah yes, the rule that changes the rule when you apply the rule
Yup. Specific > General
Or if you rolled (11 & 16) with Advantage.
Rerolled 11 --> 3. It becomes (3 & 16)
Result: 16.
So uh, why does this look ike it was pulled from a pdf? Jw.
Just reroll the worse one
With adv, that means it can only get better or equal since your other die stays the same
With disadv, it means you have a chance to roll better and be less low
Disclaimer: not worth if both rolls are low since even one fixed would just result in the other liw roll being used ofc
Rerolling Disadvantage is risky.
Not really. The percentage of getting your result stays the same with the die
Your average is still 10.5 no matter what
whenever I copy+paste from a WOTC pdf (like the Unearthed Arcanas), usually the spacing on each letter is messed up. I think this was copy+pasted from DnDBeyond
I copied and pasted it from ddb when I sent the same thing earlier
if you'd like to confirm for yourself; https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#HeroicInspiration
It doesn't look anythig like that
...
and it's part of the SRD, which, itself, is avialable in pdf
Copying stuff can do weird things to formatting
And yes the SRD is available in PDF format
The SRD is the free materials provided for folks to create D&D compatible products/resources based off of official D&D rules. And there's 2 versions - 5.1 is the 2014 materials and 5.2 is the 2024 materials.
here, I need to update my links
https://www.dndbeyond.com/srd?srsltid=AfmBOooZAhwEOZRLJpF-qFWUlJKOUGkkmdbJHSsFZvL-fZk3m2sf-Yet
if someone was copy/pasting non SRD stuff then maybe you could alert mods to it using the alert mods app, but certainly casting public aspersions is not the way
Right, well start with that first, because if I see someone immediately using something that was obviously copied from a pdf, I get immediately concerned.
The "Heroic Inspiration" isn't capitalized though, and that's also suspicious, but right, dropped.
if you're concerned you should alert a mod rather than try to imply anything in public
Right, anyways
it's SRD material, it's free to use. you can even make your own pdf that contains it so long as you include the appropriate information
How is everyone doing?
...If you throw a Melee weapon, it's DEX. Unless its a Thrown Melee weapon, it's STR...
I dont recall improvised weapons using DEX
Well, I went to their DMs and explained/apologized for my actions. Whether it will actually change anything, we will have to see
Yeah, throwing a non-Thrown weapon turns it into a Improvised Weapon
Or Finesse then it could be either one
Yeah, Improvised Weapons are not Finesse, so you would need to use Strength when throwing a weapon without the Thrown property
But if it's Finesse but without Thrown property, it defaults to DEX
Its because when you make Ranged attacks, it uses DEX.
When you make Melee attacks, it uses STR
yes. And if you throw something that doesnt have the thrown property, it becomes and Improvised weapon
And defaults to DEX
An improvised weapon is an object wielded as a makeshift weapon, such as broken glass, a table leg, or a frying pan. A Simple or Martial weapon also counts as an improvised weapon if it’s wielded in a way contrary to its design;** if you use a Ranged weapon to make a melee attack or throw a Melee weapon that lacks the Thrown property, the weapon counts as an improvised weapon.** An improvised weapon follows the rules below.
Oooh ic what you mean now
reading this over hurts my brain, why does it do that
A ranged weapon doesn't keep the ranged property when you use it as an Improvised Weapon. It is no longer an attack with that weapon anymore. THat's like saying it keeps its mastery properties
My brothers in helm, If you see me outside the tavern getting yelled at and hit by a tiefling or drow maiden, don’t save me. I am exactly where I want to be.
No, you can't have them to yourself.
If you see ME getting heckled by a enby couple of any grouping, don’t help me, I’m exactly where I need to be
If you see me having any semblance of luck, call the guards. Something is terribly wrong here
I thought that it would keep the mastery properties, because there's a part in the IW rule that says the DM can treat the weapon as it's appropriate weapon type. Example it uses the table leg as a club. I figured it could use "Slow" from it's weapon mastery properties. I mean it doesn't say specifically you can't anywhere. shrug
I think the most logically consistent thing with Improvised Weapons and the like is the concept of "the default stays", which is basically the same logic behind Specific > General.
E.g. If there is something that is generally true and nothing specifically contradicts it, that generally true statement is still true.
Doesn't mean it's intended, but that it avoids inconsistencies that arise when those considerations are made case-by-case.
I don't see why the improvised weapon would keep the other properties of the weapon at all, but okay I suppose
I think the more pressing question is: "What says it loses properties?"
If we view things from the perspective of "how they were" to "what they are now", the idea is that we'd need to be told that something that was is no longer.
this is giving me a headache trying to figure this out
Is an Improvised Weapon a Longbow?
Would you say that a block of steel, heavy on one end, treated as a maul, would lose all of its properties including heavy? Because if you were to give it an entirely new set of properties, you would then just be creating a new weapon.
Not necessarily, but a Longbow can be an Improvised Weapon.
If we're treating a weapon as a maul then it's a maul with the heavy property.
Then it would just be a maul, no?
Well yeah it would be
Yo ive never dmed before and i hwve a campaign but idk how to organize it, can someone send me a pic of what DM notes are supposed to look like just as a refrenc
It doesn't say it gains or loses any properties, so sounds like dm fiat to me
...right, I don't think you're understanding what I'm trying to say.
But more to my point, if we're removing the heavy property, then it's not a maul, and it becomes just another improvised weapon
...which is exactly my point, yes.
What I'm getting at is that using a conclusion to justify a premise, despite seemingly resulting in a more coherent conclusion, makes the premise less coherent because it therefore seemingly relies on evidence that it can't provide.
The goal in that scenario would be for it to act as a maul, so it’s either mechanically a maul that visually looks like a block of steel, or it’s an improvised weapon.
as far as I can tell "improvised weapon" is a seperate entity from whatever weapon it is you're using improperly
I think the rules of the Improvised Weapon is set, and that once something counts as it, it uses only those rules. That is how I am looking at it.
instead of being the weapon, it counts as an improvised weapon. which is 1d4 damage, no proficiency bonus, 20/60 range
