But that's just me. đ
I love stacking guidance!
Either way, deception or persuasion the ruling was buns
Hopefully Enhance Ability too
Guidance doesn't stack, but at least one person in the team needs to have guidance
If I convince a dude not to shoot me, why do I have to convince the entire army base not to shoot me too???
That's an example of a DM that shouldn't have let a roll happen at all, but did it anyways to give the illusion of choice
Either way, the campaign imploded like 10 sessions later
We call those kinda people cambions
If it can be rolled, it's technically possible
Well you convinced one dude, it doesn't affect the other dudes
Your DM still made a bad call of course
I convinced the one dude who saw me, he walked away, brought them back, then I had to roll for them
this should ideally be abstracted
Yeah that part is nonsense
How seems a good story to hear
Basically DM was throwing abunch of busted enemies at us and suddenly an entire demonic force came into the world [took 1 session to activate]
Wizard player who's like a veteran was dropping 700 damage sword falling nukes which they swear is RAW
DM has some anxiety problems with players not liking the campaign, and so he allowed us to use a fate card to basically go to an alternate time line
Wizard player fades away since they were from the floating magical island area and they were a magical being meant to help defeat the main threat
11 levels of Fighter. At least 3 levels of Ranger to get Hunter's Mark and Dread Ambusher features. One in Hexblade Warlock for Hexblade's Curse.
We go on our merry way of not dealing with gorlock the destroyer
For someone with anxiety over how people take the campaign, making someone roll for each soldier not shooting them is certainly something
DM just kind of diden't liked me using persuasion at all
3.5e may not be the right rule set for you. đ
Asked a merchant for a bulk deal price after offering to buy like 90% of his stock, rolled a 38 on persuasion, and he said no...
I don't really intend to go back to old school stuff, washed my hands off Wrath of the Righteous on Steam real fast when I found out it runs on PF1e rules instead of PF2e
Basically wizard switches over to some ranger and asks for 3.5 called shots mechanic
starts dropping infinite stun combos that can clear a homebrew dragon that's above ancient
There are no callled shots in 3.5e.
Oh path finder?
Yes, must be.
Sorry, I get the older mechanics mixed up since it was a 5E campaign
called shots in pf1e is an optional system
I don't know much about PF. Like I said, I'm too lazy to learn other rules.
DM and player had a talk with me in the call for some reason and player basically said, "I can drop out of the campaign and co-DM if you want"
Later on DM, PM's the player saying they are kicked and whole fight yada yada "Why diden't you speak up while stagnant was in the call"
I would love a co-dm. Someone to run the monsters better than I can. Not even all of them.
DM promised not to kick them from the campaign server
Later on DM'd me asking if they should kick them?
Basically did a vote but the DM took the "Maybe?" answers as yes answers
I'm having to decide whether I kick a player or let another one walk. And I can't decide.
All the players got in the call to discuss some lying with the kick polls
Wizard player basically sent a long message calling DM a snake and needing to grow up
DM deleted the message, kind of tweaked
Then went around asking who told the dude that he was getting kicked
deleted the server and has gone radio silent
Very interesting campaign end...
It was my first tier 4 campaign so I guess it had some up sides
I hate it when real life issues get into my dnd games, like I play dnd, so that atleast ONCE a week I get the chance to be anything but myself.
D&D is honestly the only thing holding me together
It's nice to take a break from reality
My current issue is that one player feels like another is talking over him and manipulating the conversation. He bottles it up and then has inappropriate explosions about it. I don't notice the talking-over most of the time.
Keep encouraging him to speak up
In 2014 there was an ability that like âadded +1 to critâ which basically made it so Nat 19âs were also critical hits like Nat 20âs, is that still a thing? Was that feature used more than once?
Did he have multiple upsets about this?
So he doesnt bottle
Personally, I really like using the strat of immediately raising my voice to drill sergeant levels when cut off
Yes. The last one was after the game last week, and it was terrible.
champion fighter and hexblade warlock
That is indeed a thing and not only with fighter champion
Magic items can have it as well
I wish they kept maneuvers as a base fighter thing
although its not +1 to crit, they just say:
You score a critical hit on a roll of 19-20 on the d20 roll
I prefer saying "let me finish please" or "let me finish" upon repeat offense in a firm but not yell
So it canât stack?
Drill seargant seems a bit scary
no
As in drill sergeant I mean deepening my voice and continuing to speak, kind of like cutting through white noise
I have worked at circling back to players to make sure they have a chance to talk, but I guess I don't do it enough. IDK why he can't speak up/interrup. There's always a degree of talking-over when you play with voice-only.
Not full out screaming
But I usually only revert to this after being cut off three times or more in a session
Oh i thought you meant shouting down a private who just tried to sneak his bunkmates pillow into the mortar
if i notice a player is cutting off or talking over others i typically tell em to let the other talk
Oo. I'd forgotten about this episode. The Burt Reynolds episode. Not as good as the Bruce Campbell one. (Watching X-Files.)
Which is that?
The only thing that gets me genuinely steamed in voice calls is beginning to speak at the same time as someone and having them accuse you of speaking over them
after making a character, can i play?
I dont know names like that
we dont run games in this server
Okay thatâs good. I have an old stat block I made and one of traits is just âdue to its strange anatomy specific internal structures cannot be targetedâ which doesnât really do anything mechanically so Iâm trying to think what to do with it and that came to mind
Its the delay. They hear you later and you them
Bruce Campbell is the Evil Dead guy. Also appeared as a thief in Xena.
To them it sounds like you started talking after they were already 6 words in
Neither of those help but what episode is it
You are right about that, the instant accusation part is my main worry
well, part of a creature's body arent targetable in the first place, so youd have to make them targetable first
Weapon swapping!
Attack with multiple weapons! Multiple Mastery Effects!
Slow + Push!
Nick + Vex?
The options are endless!
How to do this:
Attack with first weapon. Drop weapon.
Free object interaction to Draw second weapon!
Attack with second weapon that has a different property.
Most ppl kinda forget about the latency i think
Oh. Burt Reynolds is Season 9, ep. 13 "Improbable"
Ooooh that one great stuff
could look at Tromokrasis' mythic phase for inspiration. he doesnt have HP during that time, you attack and destroy his hearts instead
He plays a demon trying to have a normal baby.
Thoughts on the D&D movie?
Haven't seen it.
It is a large golem creature so thatâs not out of the question but yeah; the feature should probably just be changed altogether
I watched it and it genuinely blipped from my mind afterwards.
Which one?
I might make a dnd character of a tabaxi barb which uses a huge ass Katana two daggers (two daggers will be a rogue)
Honor among thieves
Ah yeah itâs a pretty decent movie
its a fun movie
Better than the other two D&D movies
encapsulates what your typical dnd group feels like
Grappler Feat!
WOW! THIS FEAT IS THE BEST FEAT FOR MONKS! (even better then ASI đ¤)
You can punch + grab?
Grab anything?
Dex +1?
No movement reduction while grabbing?
SUPLEX A TARRASQUE RAAAH!
10/10
All I really remember is the scene of them ||Hiding next to some intellect devourers and the ID's just literally ignore them||
still need to be huge to grapple a tarrasque
đ¤
which is funny, since a lot of them had decent int
That one is great
okay but grappler still 10/10 feat
really reccomend reading up on the full rules. there seems to be lots of holes into these
I just started season 1 again for the 6th time so ill get there eventually
I love tabaxisđ
the what
OH WAIT yeah
Punch and Grab. When you hit a creature with an Unarmed Strike as part of the Attack action on your turn, you can use both the Damage and the Grapple option. You can use this benefit only once per turn.
Attack Advantage. You have Advantage on attack rolls against a creature Grappled by you.
Fast Wrestler. You don't have to spend extra movement to move a creature Grappled by you if the creature is your size or smaller.
Still 10/10
Does "tabaxi" still refer to a tribe of human people in Chult?
I remember not liking the druid for some reason
you do not need to repost the thing in whole. i very much know what grappler does
I don't remember why
we can no longer be friends
Wait was the druid the buff one or the skinny girl?
both the human tribe and and the cat people. they both find it confusing
They're not the only ones.
the druid, doric, is the red head
I might make a rogue tabaxi that uses two daggers or two tantos
That movie is great. Love the paladin
Oh, I didn't like the buff lady
I liked them all
whats not to like about holga đ
I don't remember
The big weakness is you have Monk Hp and AC and now you grappled the enemy.
I later saw weird stuff about the actor of the sorcerer but oh well seperate art from artist
Great character
BLIND FIGHTING!!!!
A sense as a FIGHTING STYLE?!?
Busted much?!
10/10
eh? ive always thought he was a decent gy offstage
Only 10ft of blind sight
Imagine fighting Mystra(Midnight) as a BBEG in space whilst Live and Learn by Crush 40 plays in the background
ok, you cant call everything busted... yknow, some things work as intended...
So?! that means a invisible creature cant get within 10 ft of you
you can see in magical darkness. its amazing,
Unless they use silence or just do a stealth check
Like Nystul's Magic Aura
they can. blindsight doesnt do anything if they creature hides successfully
Oh I remember now, the actor was in fast & furious and I despise that movie and I jus't couldent get the thought of her being in a fantasy world out of my head
Can i recommend not putting tons of spaces between each line? Its borderline spam
Please stop :(
You will be heard still
Blind fighting + pocket fent
oh god, not the pocket fent again
Pocket pepper juice
Pocket bees?
Pocket purple wurm poison
Pocket fireball
Pocket arcane abeyance beads
Pocket tarrasque
Pocket Sand but it's actually mini-golems that dig into their nervous sytem and start slowly breaking them down from the inside
Oh dear im sold
Pocket reduced size Szass Tam
Take my pocket money
The mini-golems have already stolen it sadly
You look over to see your money slowly getting dragged away by ant-sized golems:
Wait.... no this is just jojo
The reference has been found, eliminate them...
Wouldnât weaken him, might even make him tougher
Pocket Mini-golems covered in fent and tabasco sauce go!
Ant-sized golems? Clockwork Menders.
Easier to abuse cover
Vecna but he has 6 heads
Free xp by helping an ant colony defeat another colony
Vecna but he only has 3 heads and a large torso
Finding an goblin cave in an XP game is a genuine gold mine â¤ď¸
i kinda want deadly company irl and in dnd
Same
Deadly company?
Well mostly irl but in dnd neat too
Just play canon modules but with 3x encounters and everyone has to go monoclass Rogue
even if im not gonna kill people, its fun to see toy soldiers and stuff actually do damage and fight
My warhammer has never been so fun
wait, imagine theres a fantasy version so they can be dnd minis
Do you have 40,000 of them?
Would be cool if i used minis at all for dnd
A Stand in Jojo. Small toy soldiers that have actual weapons and vehicles (albeit on a small scale)
Thats only like 1 regiment of my korps
Thatâs his cr15 servants
Maybe a swarm beastmaster thing could work
Said vecna variant can shoot explosive skulls from his head
Yeah sounds like what I was talking about
Oh, Bad Company!
The Skull Lord. A Sorcerer skeleton with 3 heads, explosions, and even more skeletons
A genuinely evil lich bbeg with dumb henchmen muscleheads that are almost charmingly stupid
I attempted a minecraft joke
ooooh, i got their name wrong so bad lmao
They are also known as "Worse Company" too
Frieza moment
Boss the adventurers are acting like a bunch of wise guys
i always give them a skeletor voice
Hades from Disney
Is it the same speed? Because a bullet, even if it's that much smaller, will still kill you. Not to mention grenades. A toy grenade, provided it has the same proportional destructive ability, will still kill you
I give my liches the lich voice from adventure time
Oh hes great but i meant big muscly goons
theyre essentially downscaled weaponry and all. they even have tanks and helicopters
You know supervillain henchmen type
Ahh alright
the one with the jersey accent?
oh, ive mostly been imagining the accents from batman arkham. since gotham is in jersey
Uh is it i thought it was a mix
And entirely fantasy
Not in any real location i thought
About Skull Lords... Am I the only one who prefered Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes' version of them over Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse's version?
Oh wow its actually shown to be southern tip of new jersey in some comics from long ago. I had no idea
yeah, gotham is canonically in jersey. which ecplains a lot
their spell list got hit a bit yeah
On the other hand they gained a deathly ray attack so... Eh?
that basically replaced the cantrips they got
I guess they wanted to turn it from a spellcasting support-commander of undead into... Well a blaster.
But it's just meh. Like, eyebite is cool! Enemies casting eyebite is fun. And finger of death! I love killing PCs with finger of death.
Especially if their zombie form gets to use their magic weapons.
i do like it better as a Leader type monster
It still has master of the grave and summon undead, that's all one needs to be a leader.
I like monsters with chill touch! Using chill touch on a downed PC puts so much fear in their eyes
i downed a cleric with it, the skull lord identified him as the biggest threat
sent the returned with him to deal with the rest
Anyone ever run necrobard?
When im necromancin, everyones dancin'
This would be a perfect time for the dancing skeletons GIF from classic Disney.
What about Dragonborn?
?
You said âno Dragonborn?â
Yeah i was like making reference of the megamind meme đ
Ah
I have multiple
Oh okay
But my next character is Valton Grey, a Dhampir monk
Oh okay me i have only one and i want only one đ my kaleb
Yeah I have quite a few as well
Actively playing Ghan Madrynn, my Goliath Watchers Dexadin
Will be having a special session in 2 weeks to give an epilogue to the previous campaign with Callhaud Einz, my Armorer Artificer
Cool have fun so
How does mercy monk feel to play?
VERY fun
You hit hard, are cool, get to poison people, and actually can heal yourself or allies
Whatâs not to love?
My first character was a mercy monk actually
My first character was a life cleric albino kenku
He never got the ending he deserved...
My first character was an elf thief in 2e. And the party decided to kill me when the DM introduced me. Turns out they didn't want to play with girls.
morning, how are yall
Can't sleep.
what time is it for ya
1:15 AM
I have seen alot of sexism in D&D throughout my entire life
thats late indeed.
Whoa, can i have some context
Oh, we were discussing 'first characters'.
Mhm
High school boys were stupid. It was a long time ago. My first character was an elf thief in 2e. And the party decided to kill me when the DM introduced me. Turns out they didn't want to play with girls.
Girl or not, L DM
I have never faced that as a player or dm?
Are you a woman?
Will their healing be valuable even with two paladins in the party?
both our group and charachters are fiverse
How many campaigns have you played in/ran?
I am not, but i also face sexism in real life
Or do you play with the same group over and over
doing my fourth, planning my fifth
Less required, but more healing never hurt nobody
as you can see next to my user, i dm for organiztion
I have been in like 34 campaigns
Never finished one...
I think I'm cursed sometimes
I see, what about their necrotic damage? Is it influential?
34
[Never played a one shot although]
Fairly
It hurts
I see i see
But we have some players that are m, f, neither, trans and so are their charachters. And never have I (heard of a dm) that was sexist towards a player/charachter within our comunety
I would say 40% of them ended from all the players or the DM flaking, 30% Scheduling, 20% Group Drama, and the other 10% is just me leaving after not being satisfied with the way the game is going
Would you say mercy or shadow is better on a largely melee party?
goblins will see you teleport and say "he cant afford a steed"
"I can afford this fireball wand with a switch attached to it you green overused eraser heads"
Can your party deal with your darkness/ do you know how to combat the downsides of darkness?
Maiby if there is a local comunety join thise, those are verry stable on the planning part
It's odd, but I enjoy the chaos of searching for a diamond in the rough.
You mean putting darkness on a coin, taking it into my mouth and hiding it whenever it's not needed?
A bad campaign is a good story later in life.
Fair point
Thatâs one way
I like using my characterâs fake eye
not me starting with clothes and 60gp
A fake eye? That sounds pretty badass too
Iâve seen someone do it with a sword and sheathe
you can also do a lantern where the inside is dark instead of bright
That is also a very nice idea
I do get quite upset whenever I join a campaign that specified EST time a multitude of times, just for some german guy that's picky about scheduling to show up
understandable
I never understood why people join campaigns that match up horribly with their schedule
Just play PBP campaigns atp
sometimes it can make sense because people have abnormal schedules, so being from a different time zone actually can be ideal; but yeah just please actually commit to a schedule
I feel like open hand and four elements monks are very focused on control
Eh, I play four elements as a striker, but yeah theyâre amazing grapplers
honestly all the 2024 monks are good just pick based on if you want to be a fighting game character, a ninja, or play avatar
So are astral self monks
I usually look for times that fit my afternoons around 7-8PM EST starting time, so I can go into the night a tiny bit without worry
How i as a dm schedule "we play the first saturday of every month at 19.00 if you can't join let me know 24h beforehand (accept if its an emergency) if you cant play. We will go ahead without you"
I DM'd sometimes, although I feel bad admitting it but every time I got uber burned out pass session 5
I see
But I think it's just a mix of personal stuff and the fact that most of the players I DM for are on the newer side and just loveee homebrew...
I do like Co-DMing though
Itâs really just up to what you want thematically, and personally preference
I feel like way of the open hand or four elements would combo with my party better
ok
I want to punch a lot
I think you shouldnât think about that too hard, party comps to this much detail isnât too important. Choose what fits or whatâs coo-
Well, you chose the right class for that
see theres a secret
your party didnt consider party comp this much. so neither should you
Where would I go to talk about the D&D cookbooks?
Alrighty
We have Crackers and Nuggets right here. Who needs a cookbook? (I once had a cat named Crackers.)
I remember the one time I played as the only frontline in a group of casters
I picked sentinel feat and I held down the fort
I'll probably go shadow monk then and try to figure it out along the way. Back up character monk is settled then
@snow agate @glass granite thanks for the help!
Always glad to see a monk!
I feel like a mage slayer monk would be very goated, especially if it's a shadow monk
Idk where to go to talk about the cookbooks, but I made the garlic knots from "Flavors From the Multiverse", and now I'm making an alchemist artificer that's themed around cooking. Even bought the new Artificer book, and I'm new to D&D đ
from experience shadow monk is already a mage slayer, mages cant really aim their spells if they cant see
- u can wallop them + stunning strike + grappler
Gotta start selling ram to afford more D&D books
Alrighty, great!
I have a feeling we'll face a lot of casters after the circle magic trick we pulled off last session
I also have previously made RĂśth Steak and Evermead. I just started cooking, and I'm genuinely excited to make a cooking-themed artificer đ
the main thing to note is that the majority of spells that affect others require you to
A: see the target
B: see the area you want to target
so if you
- cant see
you cant use effectively
so just drop darkness on the mage and then kick him in the teeth
I found this antique Japanese slot machine from the 90's, I was planning on customizing it with new decals and lights to make it D&D themed
Alrighty, will do!
I do wonder what I should put on the slots though
WHat exactly does 5e darkness do? Because 3.5e darkness doesn't make it pitch black. It creates shadowy darkness and grants a 20% miss chance.
its probably better if you just read the spell
An area of pure darkness that not even darkvision can pierce
Magical darkness spreads from a point you choose within range to fill a 15-foot radius sphere for the duration.
15 foot orb of magical darkness basically
Mechanically, what does it do?
its just a black orb
Blocks dark vision and nonmagical light
its a black orb, you cant see through it or in it
So, total concealment?
Yeah
do you know what blind means?
It blinds everything
So it nullifies the invisible condition, breaks sight, and makes everything neutral. Total concealment
Mix it with blind sight if you are feeling spicy
yeah
Btw shadow monks being able to see through others magical darkness also feels like a very useful thing that you may not notice at first
No, you notice it. Fast
Darkness 5E can also cancel out some other light spells
Itâs SUPER nice
Can't you literally make someone go insane if you just spam cast darkness and silence over them for like 3 hours
Or just like a dark room and silence spell
They can just move
My trusty 20 immovable rods surrounding them beg to differ
Sounds like a great time to take a nap.
Napping in D&D would be so nice
Just be able to instantly pop up a hut, summon hot cocoa, and a fluffy pet
Isn't that what your 'short rests' are?
this is the real reason to be a wizard
also the flying broom so you never need to walk again
Resisting the urge to throw a table at the barbarian character that's acting like a dooche bag [It's what their character would do]
I genuinly hate it when barbarians are tough mean guys off the bat
Can't they bake cookies or something?
conan is a tough philosophical guy, barbarians should be like him
i think my favorite barbarian ive seen was just a CE psychopath who liked chopping people
he was very energetic
I remember a drop slime dropped on the party barbarians head
I thought I could scare it off using fire and I accidentally lit the slime on fire
I put it out and saved the dude from suffocating
and the dude said "I rolled an 18 to hit you"
I am so glad that dude left because broski
xd
I played a barbarian once. It was right after Savage Species came out, and another player wanted to play a thri-kreen. When they joined the party, we were in the middle of combat in the dark, and it was like this giant mantis came out of nowhere. And didn't introduce itself... it just made chittering noises. Now... what would you do in such a situation? You're beating up some goblins and a giant insect comes out of the dark, waving it's little insect legs and chittering?
My character hit the monster with a critical hit and cut it in half.
If you're going to play a monster, speak up and identify yourself.
i have reached lvl 12 barbarian and ive been having a good time
so far the biggest foe slain and eaten is a purple worm
My last bard was a financial monster
Had the party sorcerer in debt at 11,400 gold, increasing by 5% in value weekly
Nice racket.
LE bard
College of glamour bard
Now now, the bard is entitled to make a fair return based on the risk involved. And loaning that much gold to an adventurer is certainly a risk.
says who? the feds? i know what you are devil
You know my character had some pretty high persuasion and he could do some crazy illusions, if only the DM didn't give every single enemy true sight and high wisdom!!!
A Conservative Paladin comes out and lectures you on the righteous virtues of capitalism.
Do you know how it feels to have the entire point of your character STRIPPED away from you
Oh im still so angry about that
now im imagining the other form of conversative paladin where they throw moneylenders out of the temple
Pfft.
My bard was eternally youthful to so he had all the time in the world
It wasn't the moneylending that was the issue; it was WHERE they were conducting business.
That may be, but adventurers die prematurely.
500 years later and the sorcerer would owe him 10^555
My character was actually insanely hard to kill
I'm not talking about you; I mean the sorcerer.
if i owed that much money id just not pay
Ohhhh, yeah I put it in the contract that I get all of his worldy belongings if he died
I predicted that
at what point is it justifiable to assassinate your loan shark
I see. So their net worth would cover it. Just hope they don't fall into lava or get swallowed whole.
That depends on which paladin you ask.
Oh the bard was a vampire, they are coming back and working off that debt
oathbreaker would say whenever you want
Necromancy is so good for unpaid labor
The vampire can undo death?
He can turn people into zombies
Zombies can follow orders, and work in sweat shops
Again, fall into lava or be swallowed whole suggests that there would be no body to zombify.
Hmmmm
now imagining a quest hook where some cleric recruits you to save their sorcerer friend from a vampire loan shark operating undead labor camps by killing all of them
If there is a body, then there is gear to collect. It's just some forms of death mean... no body/no loot.
True res them, tier 4 campaign
Do they have to come back? If I owed that much money, I'd just stay dead.
real
Soul contract, my bard was very big on deals
I see.
yeah im calling the angels on you
But he wasen't so cruel to force his teammates
But anyone else... down to the mines
Well, that campaign ended suddenly so felix will never get his conclusion
See? The contract wasn't so fool-proof afterall.
i think the meanest character i played was just a corrupt bureaucrat who cared most about collecting connections and looking good
I tend to try to avoid characters that are mean to people maliciously
i feel like making your ally a debt slave counts
But if it's funny, the insult is going through
Hey, dude said he would pay it back soon enough
That's on him if he didn't
the concept of mercy is lost on the lawyer
Bonne nuit.
Don't let the kobolds steal your moss while you sleep!
does anyone know some good dnd campaign, that I could watch on live, like on twitch or yt?
Message boards. Here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/looking-for-players-groups
I am
I can't sleep. Still.
Yeah thatâs rough
don't mean to offend. But maiby but your phone away?
Well, thatâs a good pint tbf
sometimes thats all we can do
Phone? I'm sitting at my desk on my PC.
Then maiby actually go to bed
I did try that.
âWhen at first you donât succeedâŚâ
Hence the whole 'not able to sleep' thing. :/
I do
Not a good idea. I could get eaten by a bear. It's dark out. There are cougars out there, too.
but thats due to depression
That's possibly what this is.
Can i pm you with some advice
Certainly not wanting to go out for a walk is more related to THAT than it is to being afraid of bears.
I'd be more worried about running into my neighbor across the street than running into a bear...
Then again, he's a jerk.
@weary moth we move here
@wheat herald aiden literally has the goats head on him
tf you mean atilla befriended a goat
we only found one of the goats
There was one on the barn still that you described
btw aidens orb is inanimate
Itâs his GOD
Heâs a warlock itâs his patron it is what holds his spells and itâs his magic 8-ball that he talks to
the 8 ball is in his head hes insane
schizophrenic
No itâs a physical object
how would u know?
Dude even he told us this and itâs an item warlocks can start with to be the thing to hold their spells
Only Aiden can hear it but it is sentient
bonjour, i have returned
Hi
is it okay to say "bonjour"?
Release returned this instant!
Yea thatâs ok
Itâs one word, youâll be fine. Plus itâs common enough
Moin
Whats todays convo about
I said 'bonne nuit' earlier, and no one corrected me.
@weary moth trying to find a way to balance and punish the party he dms
People being excited about their session.
Why is naming so goddamn hard (yes I just made one)
Ooo. I made a great name the other day.
It isn't. When naming towns, npc's and even campaigns. I look at different languages like french, german, lating, dutch, english etc.
then my names in game actually have some meaning
"Zorastine Gebesstha" is a level 9 human conjurer that my party will encounter somewhere in the Fortress of the Yuan-ti (the adventure I'm using).
The beginning town in my new campaign is litterly called "Anfang"
As a german speaker, heh
Thanks, my country is trilangual
One of the dms in a campaign @weary moth and I were in killed my character by having a bullet train fly through a wormhole and kill me because I considered burning down a village
what is this incoherent slop?
Wills campaign
oh
Where I got murdered and got to come back as a goblin alchemist
I love taking actual names, so I usually rely on lists of current and old time names.
Iâm bilingual (kinda/almost), but Vietnamese doesnât make great names for English speakers. Sometimes Iâll take the direct translation tho (the sky paladins are nicknamed âThe face of heavenâ, which is skyâs direct translation into English)
The Face of Heaven is a great name, I love it
The last city I named was Edess'Stal. The adventure called the city "Pedestal", and I thought that was kind of... infirm.
Gotta love Asian languages and killer (or completely ridiculous) names or translations
Shouldn't ya sleep
Yes, soon. Ten more minutes.
I mean, when learning japaneese you begon to notice most charachter names are afwul puns
Mhm
Sounds like some ancient fighting style for a monk or something
I learnt Japanese for a year and a half (forgot most of it, but eh I can read katakana, hiragana and some kanji)
2, though Iâm only semi fluent in one
1.5 /j
2 languages masterd. And i know french enough to survive in france
I can only converse in English, but I sang in Latin, Italian, French and German, though. I also know enough French to survive in France.
I know enough Viet to survive there, and Iâm fully fluent in English
Same here
english isnt my first language tho
yall can guess what it is (verry easy tbh)
and in what language do yall dm?
English
for me its both english and dutch. As some people i dm don't know dutch, and others i dm don't know english
None of my friends are remotely fluent in anything Asian, let alone Viet
So I DM in English (Iâm also far better in English)
Fair point fair point
Iâm lookin for a game on Tuesday mornings (PST)
I think you should go to #looking-for-dm or #looking-for-players
Thank you
Just about to say that
my speed was greater
Read #find-a-game to find out how to post there
Alright. I'll attempt sleep again. đ
I have a funny idea
Is anyone else having issues with dndbeyond?
Whats your funny idea
There are two
One is instead of leveling up in one class you just multiclass again
Into every class
Been done before, we know it sucks
And once you unlock all just level them up once in order you got them
It would be funny tho
We have different definitions of funny then
Mildly irritating then
And the other Idea is you know how mage hand canât deal damage or choke someone or harm them
Well you chose where it is (doesnât say in sight) and how big (most assume itâs hand sized) so you can summon a tiny one in their artery to the brain and let them die of a blood clot
Perfectly legal btw
Not at all, but you can run your game how you want. đ
Last I checked, that was damage
And (almost) no DM would allow that, so not legal
Also, again, been brought up before
If the players can do it, the monsters can do it!
Yay
ello guys. about to start a new campaign with 3 friends (1 of them dms, the other two are playing for the first time). the newbies are playing barb and bard. what do you think would be a decent option to round the party out for em? probably celric or druid, right?
Up to you, cleric and Druid are good choices tho
i like playing pretty much everything. i want to pick something this time that rounds it out and makes it a bit smoother for them
it's not gonna be my forever char anyways most likely
would be a first that my starting char doesnt get killed somehow :p
Can anyone dm me some websites that have lists of items with prices? I dont know it this channel will allow links, that's why im asking for a dm
Links are allowed
Oh ok, completely ignore the dm request then đ¤Ł
ok so should i go for a : half quickstep half fairy ( basically a fairy who can zip around with a speed of 50ft ) wild magic sorcerer
OR
half quickstep half goliath barbarian ( basically goliath w movement speed of 50ft )
im very split and ive got a campaign coming up very soon so i dont know what to choose ! i just need a 2nd opinion and ith this would be a good place to start
Fast Goliath easy
may i ask why choose the goliath over the fairy ?
Are you using homebrew species mixing rules?
I think a fast Goliath would be funnier
Cause I already know Quickstep is homebrew (since it's from the Book of Ebon Tides)
aaa true . good point ill use that then .
ith its just using races from other books
Yeah Quickstep is unofficial, I'm assuming your DM already approved though
yea he did
Aesthetically it just depends on what you want, mechanically it depends on how you're handling half-species / mixed species outside of Custom Lineage
ok gotcha . thank you for the help !
hey, I have a question I am a bit stumped on. Researching different monsters, I came across sorrowsworn, which are a type of shadow creature, manifestations of the shadowfell themselves. My issue is, they are... monstrositys? Despite the other shadowcreatures (shades, Bodaks, Nightwalkers etc) that explicitly are manifestations of the shadowfell being undead? It gets even more confusing because some of the lore literally says they are fragments of dead people?
whats the lore reason that these manifestations of dead peoples emotions are living, breathing things?
brought forth by a plane that is literally all about how it cannot sustain life?
Iâd classify them as aberrations personally
I get that, but as they are written rn, they need air, food, water and sleep, and are viable prey for any of the other shadow creatures, which seems like a very weird choice for a creature that originates on the shadowfell where you got nothing they can eat/drink and they also do no have a return mechanic like most higher undead
as they are written rulewise and lorewise rn, they should die of thirst within a week of spawning, if they arent eaten by shadows in their sleep
I mean they are the same monster class as a Roc, and noone would claim a Roc doesnt need to breathe
No, I saw one that had lists of food items, rope, simple tools and weapons and it had the amount of gold it was worth beside it, is there anything like that?
I was just wondering if there are any lore reasons this is the case? Or is this just a case of "Damn they have a cleric uh no these shadowcreatures are actually monstrosities, you cant turn them" and bad writing?
So I like the fact that you're thinking in terms of ecology. Worldbuilding is born from questions like those. If we accept the fact that they could be prey to the other monsters of the shadowfell: How do they avoid extinction at their hands? Which behaviours protect them? What do they eat, where do they find water?
What I mean is that, rather than say 'this is incoherent', I think it is more productive and creative to make it coherent.
Monstrosity, sure. I assume the published stuff has had more thought than I want to put in.
Maybe they can subsist on things others wouldn't consider food, or maybe they genuinely do get spawned, exist, and die again in a week. World of magic, after all.
Do feel totally free to change it up for your game. In mine, I said abyssal and celestial were mirrors of the same language. Not a canonical position, I feel!
YES thank you
Sorrowsworn are born from the negative emotions of the shadowfell, yes?
Maybe they indeed do exist just for that. Very ephemeral
Hi
I'm new to dnd can someone help me pls I need people to be players and one experienced dungeon master
Some embody emotional suffering, yes, others are "fragments of death incarnate", those are the two general classes, and they got 5 and 3 subclasses to those two types if the wiki is to be believed
I got a terrible DM from that
define terrible DM. Did he ask you to roll for seducing the barmaid or did he say you cannot use bonus actions because its unfair to his monsters?
He was never available to play a single campaign and the only time we ever played one, he didn't work out the rules beforehand
also there are plenty of games and dms out there, statistically they cannot be all great/ a good fit for you personally. Please do not be discouraged, a better fit for you is out there somewhere!
Ah so a "DM who wants to want to run a game more than actually run it" DM
yeah, the "I have a great idea in theory"
"So I know I want to make an epoch spanning epic, that ends with you killing god" "Ok cool, when do we start" "Oh I dunno, make level 1 characters I guess and I figure out which epoch and which god in the meantime"
Yes, reach level 11
Ah I am level 8 :[
joking aside, multiclassing and feats
Nah I just died and decided to play a warlock yuan-ti
those feats usually give you fixed spellslots, not Pact Slots, important, but sometimes you just need that extra misty step or invisibility. Multiclassing is highly risky as a warlock as your spellcasting notably doesnt multiclass. Warlocks are weird that way
would this work? using grim harvest and vampiric touch on my phantom steed to heal my self??
Probably
Warlocks get spell slots back on short and long rest though, so if you can convince the party to rest it feels a bit less like only 2 slots a day.
Other classes can benefit from SR too so its not like you'd be stalling the group much.
a fairly normal and quite powerful combo is if any other spellcaster in your group picks up catnap, a spell that lets you 3 creatures complete a short rest in 10 minutes. It is a level 3 spell though, so its expensive, but it would give your warlock all their spell slots once a long rest within 10 minutes
Perhaps
Bag of rats
cries in paladin only long resting
probaly going for a cage with bunnys
The steed has 13 HP, but instantly ends if you deal any damage to it, so yeah you could vampiric touch it, but if you dont deal 13 damage at once with 3d6 you would "only" get the half of whatever damage you did
Im not sure that an average of 5 HP (10,5/2) for a level 3 spell (and a ritual summoned steed I assume) is worth it, given that false life will just give you 2d4+4 for an average of 9 for a level 1 spell
Keep in mind that's considered exploiting so a DM might not allow it
Thatâs hilarious man go for it
stil +9 from grim harvest on kil i asume
! Question! Is there a species trait, spell, or any ability in the game that allows you as a player to transfer the healing done on to yourself to another creature instead?? I havenât found anything but thought I would ask.
unles it doest die. just fades away?? wonder how grim harvest works on that
A DM might rule that you cannot gain more life energy from a creature than it actually has with vampiric touch (so no overkill crit healing 18 HP from a 1 HP rat), and its technically not a spell casting after turn 1 where oyu do the first touch, because after that its "just" a magic action and thus doesnt count against your leveled spell per turn
Also since it's an exploit a DM might just flat out say no
Iâm more talking about grim harvest than vampiric touch
Only if you kill. Damaging something that then unsummons will not trigger grim harvest, as the spell ends it just leaves, therefore if you dont deal the whole 13 HP and reduce it to 0 in one hit, grim harvest wont trigger
doest it need a full minute to disapear ?
only under normal circumstances, if you deal any damage it ends the spell early as per the last sentence
and grim harvest only triggers on spellcast, so consecutive attacks with vampiric touch would technically not trigger it, even if the damage originates from a spell cast in a previous turn. Its weird rules shenanigans, and for vampiric touch I personally would make an exception, but RAW thats how that works I think
Thereâs probably a sage advice on this, itâs part of the spell so Iâd allow it, especially with 2014 rules
i gota see how the my dm would handle this
If you had the steed out and the situation was dire.. vampire touch as a one off a DM might be like.. creative use..
But if you call up the phantom steed and are like "This is my loyal mount 'Juicebox'" and proceed to use it for top ups all the time it would feel a lot like cheese.
Absolutely, especially with a Lego grid
Both are third level spells, if they wanna be creatively inefficient I say power to the players
Ye like they put killing non-combatants for healing and stuff in the social contract section of the new DMG for this reason.
taking 44 min to summon 4 steeds and start draining there life force XD
Your username is reminding me if smthn
Ah. No, one of the bosses in our countries dnd organization is called captain asthma
I understand that.. as the other users and I were saying it might be viewed like cheese or exploit by some DMs.. but some not. And so maybe not all the time.
Lmao
I mean the max they could get out of Juicebox after spending 10 minutes and a level 3 necromancy spell would be 9 (max damage roll on 3d6 without crits)+9 grim harvest. 18 HP for 10 minutes investment (20 if they want their horse back to ride) and a 3rd level spellslot is honestly not fantastic? False life upcast to level 3 would get 2d4+14 for an average of 19 Temp HP, and that doesnt require horse torture
To he's the captain
Sure.. I'm agreeing with you on it not being a super effective use.
Iâve been DMing for a long time, Iâd totally allow it, there are way more broken things as part of the rules, I donât think itâs my job to tell the players what they canât do as long as itâs in the rules and makes sense in lore
Whats conversation about
Just saying that it is an exploit and your DM doesn't have to allow it.
Not that a DM can't allow it
Visible confusion
And that's totally cool.
What we have been saying is not all dms would. And it might not work with both features as suspected due to the nature of Summon steed.
Summoning a creature and using vampiric touch to get HP from it
We are talking about how viable it is to drink your horse. I hope that helps
Or doing the bag of rats
Power word liquify
Big old caveat of "Ask your DM"
Yep and can't whine when they say no
just wondering, what do you consider an exploit? something that goes against the spirit of the game? or something not RAW?
Easy way to drink a horse
How do we define exploit? Youâre using vampiric touch on a creature with hit points, doesnât matter to me if itâs a summoned creature or a captured rat. Obviously not all dms would allow it, thatâs so obvious I donât even know why we need to state it thatâs just common sense, Iâm just saying that it makes sense and Iâd allow it and Iâve allowed similarly creative spell uses, much to my campaignâs benefit
Something that acts outside the intended rules from unintended interpretations based on language used of the feature
You can sulk a little bit. If you arent trying to emotionally manipulate your dm into letting you do cool crap in the game, even if just once as an emergency, are you even playing dnd
How do we know what theyâre intending? Youâd need sage advice for that
No it's in the '24 DMG
They added a section based on player behavior and among it was exploits
Like peasant railgun or bag of rats, specifically stated
where to find cheat sheets and character class feats?
Yeah I like that hey picked up the peasent railgun as an example. They really do listen
Imagine, level 20 twilight cleric. What to do about it?
Same rules
Bag of rats wasn't intended in 2014 either, that's why they addressed it
Dont cheat your sheets! Also dndbeyond has a lot of free stuff available, are oyu looking for anything specific?
character class feats
The 2024 player behavior based on exploits is literally based off of incidents from the 2014 era
I do not know what that means. There are character classes. There are character class features. There are feats. There are feats that require a class feature to be picked. THere arent character class feats?`Or is that a terminology that I do not know?
Some guy was playing a Fiendlock and wanted a bag of rats he could kill for infinite temp hp
That's not intended nor is the DM in the wrong for not allowing that.
So all the section did was tell new DMs that they're allowed to say no to that.
You canât stack temporary hit points?
The intention is you use your free object interaction to kill a rat when you run out
Temp HP does not stack
yeah, I thought Temp HP dont stack, you only keep the highest?
a rat... isnt an item though
Yeah I know, you just take the highest
Doesn't stop people who wanna do that trick
if you are required to kill a creature, then you need to follow the normal rules of killing a creature, thats an action
The argument was "its a bag of rats and a bag is an object
and if you are using your action to kill a rat, then you might as well just use the fiendish vigor invocation for automatic 12 temp HP
What? Iâm not talking about bags bags donât have a stat block??
Nvm it's features and not feats
I'm stating the argument people who say you can bag of rats exploit use.
Not you specifically.
Yeah but thatâs got nothing to do with what weâre talking about? Might as well bring up the infinite simulacrum thing
You do not kill a bag by interacting it with. Unless you are doing something very wrong, or are edward scissorhands. Anyways, either that bag is sturdy enough to take a punch or the rats will likely chew their ways out, they love chewing holes, but I get that we are talking about exploiters trying to exploit
Someone mentioned bag of rats before it turned to steed but the premise still applies
Only difference you're wasting resources which admittedly is a huge difference
or a cage with bunnies
I think the measure of a good dm is being fair and firm, itâs about interpreting the rules, like a good judge. There are way more broken and efficient ways to heal in 5e, besides a simple fireball invalidates the entire strategy, I say let the players be creative and have their fun, itâs a better experience and way more immersive
I say you can take a short rest, use healing potions or spells
Or use vampiric touch on that Bandit Crime Lord boss coming up. Just get your paladin to compelled duel him
To use this strategy you would be using a spell
wat if the players or DM doest allow short rest. what if healing potions are very rare and hard to get? while spellslots are free?
Then I'd leave that table
Spell slots being free sounds like that DM wants the players to only play spellcasters.
A life cleric with magic initiate for goodberry or just a life cleric at all is way more broken, if someone wants to play a vampiric rat catcher then power to the player at my table
If someone wants to do that at my table they can go find some Giant Rats in a basement to get 2 silver from some innkeeper
the measure of dming is telling people boundaries, so that while running XP, only intended monsters give XP. Therefore boiling an anthill to get 20000 XP (1 per ant) will not work. On the same spectrum, you might allow a 2 HP poisoned wizard that is using vampiric touch to drain a holy tree of life to survive even though thats not how the spell is supposed to work, because it fits the narrative of the spell.
Thereâs nuance to to this, allowing vampiric touch to work as written in 2014 is not the same as farming xp as an exterminator? Crazy false equivalence
They both sort of fall in the usual exploit cases
No short rests but unlimited Spellslots? Full cleric party aquired, tiamat will know true fear, and the gods can only beg to be spared by their own creation
Cause even if horse torture isn't a free temp hp generator, it's still not intended and part of the rule revisal was making that clear
I donât think vampiric touch on rats is anywhere near as rare as boiling ant colonies for xp, especially considering how it would work in lore and also considering that most tables donât even use xp to begin with
short rest dont cost gold like HP potions not unlimited, you regain than after short and long rest
And you would be correct in deciding to do so.
Just like Sora would be correct not to.
We haven't been saying you definitely can't do that. Just that the original combination wouldn't work as intended as the phantom steed merely fades after taking any damage it is not "killed" per se.
What is think folks are trying to do is set an expectation that its not a guaranteed solve.
I understand that, Iâm explaining my position not saying others donât exist, oh my god please read my messages
this example was about a) interpreting rules as written. A "beast" is a monster. Even a CR 0 monster can yield XP for a low level party. A single ant is technically a CR 0 monster. Therefore, RAW you should be able to farm ants to level up. Obviously thats not how that works, because it doesnt make sense in the narrative. Example b) is about using vampiric touch or any life drain on a tree. RAW, thats not possible, because a plant without a statblock is techncially an object, not a creature, but again you overwrite the RAW because this fits the narrative
Speaking of goodberry cleric I'm glad they removed that bit in the revisal
Individual ants are not monsters, pouring in some water would not kill a whole colony, most tables donât even use the xp system. Using vampiric touch on a creature like a rat (I myself never said holy tree) makes sense in lore, and is a creative spell use by my players. Is is not power gaming, it is not vehemently against sense or logic, I would allow it, and I can make reasons why outside of just appealing to authority
I can allow things in my dm and you are free not to
It ain't just appealing to authority
You didnt, I just made an example with the tree, this was not about you specifically (I did not link you?). It was a contribution to the general discussion, I am sorry if I made it seem like I was criticizing you personally
You didnât link me but it was a direct reply to my comment?
I think they were trying to clarify based on your response.
But any ways I think we're mostly on the same page of understanding (if not agreement) so maybe it's time to move on to other topics
not the first one you reacted to? Please do check the reply, I replied to your reply to my holy tree comment, but I agree that using vampiric touch against rats would be RAW and narrativly fine anyways, you can totally eat a swarm of rats with vampiric touch if you are hungry
Yeah I agree itâs like thereâs a language barrier here. You guys fw the poison spray change?
I like the change. Con saves are somewhat better balanced in 24 (still not great to target but at least not everyone got prof now), and an attack roll gives the player more agency anyways!
I've not had any issues with it
I didn't even realize it was changed
Also increasing the range from 10 to 30 feet is great
Also less than half the '25 MM is immune to poison which is a win
its still arguably on the weaker side with "only" 30 feet range and the most resisted damage type in the game I believe (did that change?) but hey, if you want to swing a poison greataxe, more power to you, and you dont have to be in melee to do it!
Still the most immune but it's only 200 or so enemies
also it can crit now that its an attack roll, thats important for sorcerers incarnate sorcery critfishing
The other 300 can take poison damage and be poisoned
There is still the one major issue with poison in 2024 tho
Though tbh sorcerers can also do poison among other damage with sorcerous burst which has 120 ft range and has the cool exploding dice mechanic, so idk if I would personally run it outside of themed characters. Could do a damage calc though
It's something only WotC can fix
so we are truly lost
It's called the "DMs only use Undead" dilemma
WotC has to unleash the inevitables to deal with it but they're staying their hand
what is it with some DMs only using undead? Its a theme that comes up way too often. All the undead have going for them is that they sound cool and scary on paper, only to realize that like 3+ classes are specifically geared up to counter them. Now, Fey on the other hand...
Cause Undead are very simple and have a lot of statblocks
I guess same goes with constructs. "Uh that tomb is old and sealed, what to put here, how about undead and golems, yeah they will never see that coming"
Yeah you can throw Undead, constructs anywhere
weirdly enough for all the dungeons, there are very few dragons living in them
Same can be said for Humanoids and Humanoid-adjacents which make up the other majority
Those are the times you can use poison but you're so used to it being useless because of the reign of terror by Undead dms
Undeads are a simple, low stakes adventure premise which don't require tons of DM prepwork and have a lot of flexibility. Plus they evoke rich and time honoured tropes and imagery
Now, I don't like running undeads very often myself but those are the reasons I can see
Yeah, with other creature types there's more availability for roleplay to settle the encounters rather than combat
They're also convenient in that they don't present a moral choice, in contrast to intelligent living creatures.
With low level Undead, at best, you might run into a Wight
Oh yeah, technically speaking lore wise humanoids should be freaking everywhere. But most of the time, you got a perfectly fine dungeon with good infrastructure and only a modicum of death traps and still, no goblins or kobolds have moved in here? No bandit/brigand camp that uses these? Not even some weird gnomes that try to reverse engineer the robochickens these guys had? Because there is a sealed door with a lich behind it? Pfff, grow up, if that lich could get out, it would have 500 years ago
And they're probably in service to something evil and don't have "reason" in their vocabulary either
Then you get players that don't recognize most intelligent life as being intelligent so you can throw anything at them
Which is a double edged thing imo
Ah yes, the good old "Wait goblins can talk?" players
Not sure I'd want to play with those players
It's fun to use any monsters on a whim but they look at you with deer in the headlights looks when a Kobold has a house, job, hobbies and a family
I've run into players who think Goblins are like Goblins from a certain goblin anime and made my skin crawl
I mean, you can get away with "war camps" and "raiding party" so the kobolds/goblins/gnolls/trolls are all decisivly male, single, evil and murderous if you do a bit of lore and put a battle banner here or there
"First of all, no. Secondly, frigg no. Thirdly, if you ever bring up any of those goblins behaviour, you will be asked to leave."
I used to but then I realized I hated it and preferred encounters to be more than just combat
seriously I get what said anime is going for, but it made no sense in universe (because they still treat goblins as low level adventurer intro monsters despite them being actual major threaths in the world all the time) and it was mostly played for shock value anyways
I feel you. Having things like "Ok the harpies are circling us, they will strike at any moment!" "Actually, I speak harpy, can I roll a lore check or insight to get an idea of their intentions? Maybe they can be reasoned with to let us pass" can be way more fun than a random encounter.
Reminds me of the time I was very new to dming, and rolled a random encounter in an adventure that was supposed to suprise the players in the dead of night. Which was a singular cockatrice. Which are unaligned and in the setting territorital about their nests, but not aggressive towards or even afraid of humanoids, who they dont see as viable prey. So I described how this oversized lizardchicken waltzend up to their campfire, stole some of their stew, and then sat down to enjoy the warmth of the embers of their campfire. Players loved it
My encounters always vary
To some degree
Some encounters are just fight to survive, others can be protect others.
I had a party fight a group of War Goddess worshipping Orcs in a non-lethal match on the woods and they basically became a militia after until the warriors died and the priest leading them left to go to another city
Last "encounter" I had was ripping off the Mines of Moria from Fellowship.
The fighters poor horse failed its check needed to handle being on a bridge smaller than it.
I prefer killing harpies
There are certain enemies where i really do not have any interest in negotiating, even if i will die in the case of combat (on most characters)
Hey sorry to Bother yall does anyone know the best place to find online games? I recently moved really far and my time zone is super funky lmao.
You can use our Looking For Game channels - see #find-a-game to learn how to use them.
not a bother.. there isn't so much a best place, but we have some looking-for channels here. You can find instructions here: #find-a-game
other places could be reddit
got it thanks đ
So, based on the 5.5e changes, what do you all think might change once 6e finally rolls around?
everything
thats kind of too early to tell
that's how a full edition change works.
Part of my brain thought 5.5e meant that we were halfway there.
3.0 went into 3.5 almost immediately and 3.5 ended up being the whole edition in practical terms
I see.
took well over 10 years or so for 4th to happen iirc
Been coming up with bit of a crazy idea for a character. I got most of the main parts put together but Ironically it happened cus I was trying to do something entierly different.
Nah we're going to have this for a while I believe. Wotc risks losing more customers than it already has if they switch now
Probably a decade of 5.5e at least
well yea they only just started 5.5
Alrighty, then. Still, I like a lot of what 5.5e does, even if I don't like a lot else.
5.5 is mostly regarded as better than base 5e rules in about 75-95% of situations depending who you ask
Honestly, as someone who's a sucker for great creature designs, arguably my favourite new thing is the design updates all the dragons got.
Effectively I put together a character with 2 HP bars. 1 for a clay body it controls and then a second HP that is for the soul inside once the clay body shatters.
drops from the sky hello
What's y'alls favorite way to deal with enemies in campaigns? Mine is simply setting them on fire đ¤Ł
Remind me - what're the main mechanical changes?
Brake there minds to have them get sent to the coal minds to die of black lung
cus then I profit from them
Theres an entire book showcasing trhe rules so you asrtent getting a complete changelog on discord
OK.
No DMs can say they drop nothing when I have them work till they drop only for me to replace them with the next goblin I see looking at me.
I mean in terms of combat. I just set things on fire because my character is kinda insane
A dm can say they drop nothing
Accuse children of being vampires and pelting them with silver untill they die.
Nobody will dare stop your richious crusade against darkness.
Untill he starts making real vampires to try and kill you
cus you ran out of silver
A Deadpool comic quote that perfectly sums up my character is "I'm bored. Let's light something on fire."
Its so foggy where I'm at, I feel like if i head outside ill end up in Borovia
Strahd would not be happy with you
DnD Grendel is weird looking. Of course i set him on fire like pretty much everything else
Lmaoo
My friends daughter just informed us that they have a dnd elective at her school
To get a credit to play dnd lol
That's pretty awesome, I wish I had that in school.
Don't worry, just wait for adventurers to arrive and give them a quest to save you
Make sure to reward them your credit card tho (maximum persuasion)
how does one get permission to put out a looking for players i do not have access for some reason
the DM role
IF that is the case then it might be due to you being new to the server. i am unsure as i am not super active here
hmm i guess it doesnt say anything about it
Sorry i cannot be more help. I dont recruite often for my games, otherwise i might hae a proper anwser
its all good maybe ill ask mods if theirs something i gotta do
perhaps, i came here to ask why they added K-ID
How does Heroic Inspiration work?
If you have it, you can use it to reroll a D20 Test (meaning an attack roll, an ability check, or a saving throw)
Isn't it broken.
No
u can always roll lower
No it is meant to be rewarded as a special gift for good RP/Charchter momments
Heroic Inspiration is a relatively rare resource that either the DM provides as a reward or certain classes provide you under specific circumstances
Humans also get it in 2024
Is it a thing of the champion fighter subclass
for a metacurrency, i personally find inspiration to be underwhelming, especially since you can only hold on to like one inspiration at a time
i love it when my dm spawn 8 goblins and 2 goblin bosses on me and my 3 person party đ (level 1 btw)
Yeah, I believe the new Champion is built around them being able to get HI a little easier than others
Theres the ugly goblins skill tree
It says that you gain it automatically every turn. I dont know if im wrong
But still not broken. Especially when you consider, as mentioned, that if you use it you have to use the new roll
Do people find games here? Trying to find Discord/DnD beyond based games.
So if you rolled lower than or the same as the first time, youâre SOL
theres a find a game chat at the bottom of server chat list
#find-a-game is where you go for that!
Awesome ty
no problemo
anyone know what those middle sized abberation things with the one eye is called the one that got like half its hp removed
Nothic?
Did you just reply to something I said nearly a month ago? Why?
Yea that one, Thanks
what does the DMG 2024 book provide btw? other than guiding a new DM, any content i mean
Lore glossary, example campaign setting, magic items, exp budget chart
The Bastions system, for one. That's home bases for player characters.
updated variants or same as 2014?
Most of the '24 magic items, as far as "content" goes, as well as bastions.
Many new things
Was just scrolling and saw that
bastions, More fancy magic items, and i didnt entirely get the lore glossary thingamajig and what it is
Iâve been tempted to add a little homebrew extra to the heroic inspiration system. Although Iâll have to change it a little so humans and champion fighters donât abuse the hell out of it
Thereâs actually a lot of advice on designing adventures/campaigns too
And I far prefer the encounter builder of 2024, it really helps loads when making encounters
The lore glossary is a short dictionary about common DnD lore stuff.
Who are the Fallbacks
Who is Vecna
Stuff like that.
Yeah, the Lore Glossary is pretty solid
what book is that one again?
DMG 2024
thanks
The 24 PHB has the Rules Glossary for easy access mechanics, the 24 DMG has the Lore Glossary for easy access lore (particularly around NPCs, many of whom are âmultiversalâ figures).
okay, so Common DND lore stuff, encounter builder, bastions, tons of magic items
anything else to note? probably gonna paste this to the DM so he has a short summary of what else is found in the new book
It has Greyhawk as a short example campaign setting.
Guidance on designing adventures and campaigns, an example campaign primer, additional rules for using things like Divine Gifts, Curses, and Fear
'24 is a different system than '14. People can call it "updated" if they'd like, but that doesn't change the fact that it is different. Not fundamentally so, but it isn't the same regardless. Many things, mostly subtle, changed - making the changes to the magic items that were made subtly important as well.
For example, werewolves & silvered weapons - which used to be a nonmagical weapon and the weakness was inherent to the creature. Now it is a magical weapon, and keys off of the fact that a werewolf is a shapechanger.
campaign primer?
Thereâs quite a lot in there. Much of which was already in the old DMG, but itâs organized way better now.
Yeah, itâs like a short campaign setting guide. They use the setting of Greyhawk to show how you can sort of design a setting without needing to write a 100+ place campaign doc.
It essentially teaches you how to focus on important locations, some basic history, general setting info like the calendar, gods, and the important themes that may lead to a campaign in the setting.
No one should ever make a setting document that long to start with, unless the goal is to sell that product.
i see, thank you for your help explaining,
we're essentially a bunch of people who are newcomers to DND, with a decently experienced DM all moving from 2014 to 2024 whilst only having played a couple of campaigns through 2014, so am looking to just understand whats updated and such
I disagree
World building is a hobby of its own.
Right. Their Greyhawk primer in the new DMG was just enforcing that you donât need to make a WOTC-sized campaign setting guide to feel ready to run your homebrew setting.
pretty sure our friend did for his world building, 40 doc campaign for a One piece DND type thing
Its more like, you are free to write 200 pages on your world, but be prepared to trim out only the important parts for the homebrew world
Write 200 for self indulgence and as a hobby, use 20 to make everyone's life easier
I said to start with.
A setting document for your home game is a living document. It grows over time. Perhaps it'll reach that length eventually, but there's absolutely no reason for it to start at that length.
Yeah, your campaign guide doesnât need to be extensive to be ready to play in your setting
It can be, but doesnât need to be
Where are you from guys? Im DM DnD One piece. Right now there are 3 of us, 2 of whom are playing. Would anyone like to play?Play in Saturday and Sunday. And by the way I am from the Czech Republic.
That's fair to start with is good.
And the Greyhawk primer was good at showing how you donât need that much on paper to have a full setting guide to play in
The vibes from the Greyhawk gazzetter reminded me a lot of the old 1e FR grey box
Thx đđ
Yeah they said they based it on that quite heavily
Forgotten Realms proves it's superiority once again /s
I mean it's the most popular one for a lot od reasons
Yep, in both how it was designed and what setting they decided to use, itâs an homage to the 50th anniversary of D&D
I'm running 2 exandria campaigns and 7 forgotten realms right now
I feel bad for Eberron. Could make for some great video games. Even had one for a long time the Old MMO was set in Xendrik in Eberron. But over the last 4 years most module expansions have transitioned to the Realms.
I understand you're joking, but I'm still of the opinion that this is an actual opinion many hold because of how much FR content exists rather than it simply being 'better'.
I also think FR is just better. đ¤ˇââď¸
Yeah I think itâs a quantity thing more than a quality thing, but thatâs just a personal opinion. And no way is it meant to invalidate the feelings of people who genuinely love FR
So did WotC that is why there is a region in the Forgotten Realms called the Forgotten Lands now.
That is Forgotten^2
And I think that's primarily because of the reason I said. If other settings had as much content for them, that opinion would not be as common.
I'm not saying the opinion is definitively wrong - some opinions can be. This opinion isn't one of those.
Impiltur? Never heard of her.
It's one of the reasons I think exandria is as popular as it is as well.
-# though some people like to weirdly pretend like the content from CR 1, 2, and 3 aren't definitively canon content they can draw from should they choose and that they can weirdly only use the wildemount book
Yeah I get that FR is just a juggernaut of content. And it def had a quality assurance issue for some time. But it works as it was intended to work. As a setting of a thousand stories. To be the opposite of Dragonlance. Which was the setting of A fantasy Epic story.
We could use other video games in other setting though. WotC plz..
If you have to put Warlock the realms. Make the ocean in a different cardinal direction please.
I think that comes from people associating the Wildemount book as an âofficialâ Exandria campaign setting guide because WOTC published it, whereas the others are third party and thus âcanât be usedâ for some reason
I wanna try looking for a group again but every time I do when I join them something goes wrong
People are alowed to interpret the setting as they like, I know in my wildmount games there is no mighty nein
If off screen heros did all that then there wouldent be as much juice for the players to squeeze
Even better use Tal'Dorei and Wildemount.
But the Tal'Dorei lore comes from the Original Guide by Green Ronin
M9 is and continues to primarily be a small and mostly unknown group that works behind the scenes despite their major world-saving accomplishments.
When I ran my Wildemount campaign, it wasnât that they didnât exist so much as most of their adventuring never really got to see the public light. So they existed, but they werenât famous enough celebrity adventurers for my PCs to know about them.
The existence of high-level adventurers and NPCs has never been the problem in my games over the last 25 years that people make that out to be.
Worlds are huge places. Just take a look at our world, even with magic, there are far too many problems for one group to do alone or even 100.
If this were true there'd never be any PCs in FR
im playing the strixhaven setting with two of my teachers and 3 friends (with one teacher as the DM), we played sessions of 40 minutes (lesson periods) and never got to finish it before we graduated from there
we started early 2024 or late 2023 with weekly sessions, and we played a 4 hour session in the summer vacation
we need 1 last session of maybe 2-4 hours to finish it and we have tons of planning issues, we are talking about a session in the winter vacation but its going... not well
can i expect another session or should i give up trying?
Eldritch Invocations can be chosen based on the player's level or the warlock's level?
That said, my statement did specifically say "choose". I never said you had to use the other available exandria content.
Warlock level
Unfortunate.
My wildmount campaign was basicly a re interpretation of what could have happened in the erah of the mighty nein, it was an epic game that closed out at level 20 and focused on the beasts of the betrayers ukatoa deseriat and quagjoth
In that kind of campaign it makes sense to not have m9 then, I agree.
hey you know classes like ranger and paladin? Are they intended to be like sort of a mix between martial and caster or are they like. just casters?
They are a mix.
does bard count as a mix or nah :3
They're mechanically half casters.
They are full casters
Nah, full caster.
is ranger that bad đ
No
No
dnd is a team game, despite the amount of people who try to do it all.
Yeah every class is designed to have their particular strengths, but none of them are inherently designed to do it all
Even the most versatile classes, like Wizard and Cleric, are locked into what theyâve prepared to be able to do for the day
-# except wizards can cast ritual spells they've not prepared but clerics can't grumble, grumble
Well that and, legally/officially speaking wotc doesnt actually own everything (or anything*) from exandria. So while the CR campaigns are implied/explicitly canon (depending on specifics, especially for C2) in the two official books its understandably a lil wishy washy.
*this is part of the legal text in the books that specifies wotc doesnt own the setting
Wishywashy? There's literal statblocks for their campaign 1 characters
Not in Wildemount
Those statblocks are in the TCSR, which was fully published by CR/Darrington Press. Itâs only available on DDB via third party partnership.
But Wildemount was published by WOTC in collaboration with CR
More specific for the C2 stuff, especially as the book is set before large chunks of the campaign
I'm aware of that. That doesn't make those not official for that setting. It makes it unofficial as far as it comes to WotC.
Exandria isn't owned by WotC
in terms of being an official thing for the setting? Thats exactly what it does - make it not official.
Its pretty much the same concept as canon vs kanon when it comes to Eberron - except that in this case wotc doesn't own the setting overall
does the DMG 2024 or Players handbook update species as well? or primarily subclasses and small class thingies
the 2024 PHB includes updates to species yes
It makes it unofficial for WotC. It doesn't make it unofficial for the setting, as WotC doesn't own the setting.
'24 player characters are fundamentally different than '14, in many regards. Species, class, subclass, etc.
The context definitely seemed to be about "dnd official", which would be "wotc official"
we might be attempting a conversion over, and im just trying to figure out the differences
The context is explicitly the opposite.
With "known spells" does it mean i can choose (as a warlock) a total of spells between lvl 1 or 2? I cant understand
if you have the appropriate pact slots to cast them with
Choose, or cast? And what level is the warlock?
didn't seem to be the opposite, whole context seemed to be about official support for the settings
Take as example a level 3
I'm telling you, as the individual who started the conversation about exandria, that it is explicitly the opposite.
That is not evident from what was said, by you and definitely not by what everyone else said ÂŻ_(ă)_/ÂŻ
I don't know why you're fighting me on this swamp. I'm clarifying it, as the person who included exandria as part of the conversation.
even if its not what you were saying, its what other people said. So if you don't want to think I'm addressing what you said, then you can just read it as me addressing what everyone else said
