how does the kidney carry out its role of osmoregulation

ADH is released from the pituitary gland, which goes to the nephron (in the cortex of the kidney). This happens when osmoregulatory sensors detect either a high or low blood concentration. If there's low water volumes in the blood (i.e. not enough water), ADH is released which - as the name implies - reduces the volume of water that goes to the bladder. This is because ADH makes the walls of the collecting duct more permeable, which means more water is diffused back into the blood stream, which then brings the water level back to normal.
