Let's define a few terms first:

1. Component: Each paper you give; like MCQ, Str etc
2. Raw marks; marks you get in each component; 30/40 in MCQs
3. Weightage factor: Multiplication factor by which your raw marks are multiplied; so if the factor is say ×0.75 then suppose you got 32/40 then now after Weightage you get 24/30.
4. PUM: Not everyone gets this but this is the number written in brackets alongside your grade. It's not percentage not is it a percentile. It's just a benchmark if how you performed with respect to thresholds.

Let's take an example now.
CAIE Chem 9701:
3 components: MCQ, Str and Pracs

My marks were 37/40, 51/60 and 37/40 respectively

Applying weightage factors for each paper, my marks are now:
MCQ: 37×1 = 37/40
Str: 51×1 = 51/60
Pracs: 37×0.75 = 27.75 so ~ 28/30

Now I add all these marks to get my weighted marks:
37+51+28 = 116/130

The threshold for Feb March 2023 was 83 for an A i.e. I need to get 83/130 to get a score of A(80).

I got 116/130 and recieved a score of A(94). Now if you want to know how to calculate the PUM I have a method for that but will tell that later.

Now coming to A2. CAIE Chem has 2 components for A2: Str and ATP. Both have a weightage of ×1 so total marks of A2 :
str marks + ATP marks
= 100+30
=130.
