I study hs in the US and this system is much more flexible than the UK

Whether you get into a good college or not depends on several factors

The us high school system works very similar to university, each course you take gives you credit in a specific subject. And you need to get a certain amount of credit in each subject to graduate, keeping your gpa above the minimum requirement.
There's the SAT, ACT which is the closest thing to a levels in terms of their importance to admissions. You can still get into a good college with a bad SAT or ACT but usually colleges will have a minimum requirement, what makes SAT and ACT better than a levels when it comes to admissions is that they DONT take much of your time, they are quite basic as in you don't need to learn anything new for it since it tests the bare minimum knowledge required for college, and overall it's accessible for everyone. The more rigorous exams would be AP and IB, but these , unlike a levels, are not necessary for college admissions, they can help your chance of getting into a good uni but they are still not necessary.

Colleges will put way more importance to SAT/ACT, cummalative GPA, uw GPA, weighted GPA extracurriculars, college essay , LORs, etc rather than the advanced exams we give like IB or AP exams

If you did terrible in high school you can also enter into a community college, the courses you do will be very easy and you can easily get a really high GPA. After, you can enter into an actual good college/university, showing your gpa from community college and they will accept it as they know you can handle college level coursework
