Resumption of exams countrywide from Monday 15 May

Following the British Council's decision to prioritise the safety of your candidates over the past few days, we are delighted to inform you that we will resume all exams across the country in line with the Cambridge timetable from Monday 15 May 2023.

Please inform candidates to report to the designated exam venues as per the already shared Statement of Entry and Venue Letter. We thank you for your continued support during this challenging time and we wish your candidates the very best of luck for their exams.

Next steps for cancelled exams

Cancelling the exams on 10, 11 and 12 May was a difficult decision for the British Council and Cambridge. We understand the disruption this has created and we are now in a position to outline the next steps below:

Today, Cambridge clarified that they will not award results based on School Assessed Grades and will not be asking schools to collect a Portfolio of Evidence of candidates’ work. Cambridge will only be awarding grades based on examinations that the candidate has been able to take. As communicated yesterday, candidates whose exams have been cancelled can still receive a result if they have sat at least one eligible component and completed at least 15 per cent of the total assessment in the June 2023 exam series. A Level candidates will need to sit at least one A2-level component to receive a result for a full A Level.

To explain this further, Cambridge awards a result to candidates in the circumstances above with a well-established process whenever a candidate is absent from an exam component for an acceptable reason. Cambridge uses the candidate’s performance in the component(s) taken to calculate their performance in the components that they did not take. There is a full explanation of the process on the Cambridge website. Assessed marks are not an ‘average’ grade, they are not the forecast grades provided by the school, and they do not use the candidate’s mock exam grade.

A Level Mathematics and A Level History

Following three days of cancelled exams, there are now candidates who have been unable to sit any components in A Level Mathematics and A Level History. Cambridge is looking into how they can support these candidates and they fully appreciate the significance of these exams for students’ entry to university. Further updates on the next steps for these candidates will be provided next week.

Thank you for the feedback and questions that you have been sending to Cambridge and to the British Council. While we may not be able to address every question in this communication, we have received all of them and are doing everything that we can to minimise the impact of these cancellations on students.
