because it was built for solo armadas at a time when they hadn't decided if they were going to do more solo armadas or not, so they didn't add extra range to compensate for future content, whereas, say, cerritos and titan are both expected to run with you and retain utility well into g6 and they knew the range would be 'needed'

There's several variables that depend on you. If there's any factions (federation/klingon/romulan) that you are hostile to, go to their systems and they'll attack you. If you're positive rep for all of them, then look at Augment space.

When you're on the galactic map, you'll see area's of the map that are colored. Those are those faction spaces.
Blue for Federation, Green for Romulan, Red for Klingon, yellow for Augment.
If you look in your Factions for Federation/Klingon/Romulan, you'll see your reputation with them at the top. If you're negative enough, they'll hate you and send ships to attack you.

Here is an idea for your armada problems. And, it can be implemented through the entire game. You can convert all armadas into a spawn point that has a generic armada ship. You click on it and it opens a drop down menu of each armada type that can be selected. It shows different armadas, cost to start, how many directives you have. Once selected, that is a run armada.
This will allow you to put more armadas through the game in multiple systems and not have to worry about having enough or them not Spawning correctly.
