the maxwell GTX 900 Series GPU's while supported use outdated Vram with horrible frequency, they also have very high power consumption and as such are not profitable

They use GDDR5, it's old but not exactly outdated
Same stuff as on pascal and polaris, and even some turing parts

still though, the GPU's earn much less than other cards that use GDDR5
Aye, that's just not down to the memory though. Afaik maxwell lacks some hardware features that many miners make use of
for the 970 it might be because past the 3.5GB treshold the memory frequency goes to crap

maybe this is why maxwell was abandoned within a single generation 
For games it stuck around for a while. Even towards late turing the 970 was quite often targeted for new games
Nowadays it's a bit old though :(
