should you know what to do with your life by uni? i’m going into uni soon and i still don’t really know what exactly i want to do with my life is this normal? and on top of that should i do something im passionate in for the rest of my life like music or something that is relatively good paying and realistic?

This is just my opinion. It’s completely normal not to know what you want by uni. You could be 50 only to then realise you love ski-ing or snowboarding etc.

I personally would go for my passion but at the same time, have a back up. Some people go for the realistic option before going for their passion and vice versa. Some people juggle both at the same time.

I’ll probably come back to this to add more but for now.

This is my opinion on it. I wish you the best of luck deciding and I hope regardless of which you choose, you’re happy/ non-regretful with your choice.

you absolutely don’t need to have your whole life figured out before or even during uni. most people are just winging it, even the ones who seem like they have a solid plan. it’s completely normal to not know exactly what you want to do, college is literally the time to explore, try different things, and see what actually clicks for you. no one expects you to walk in on day one with a 10-year plan mapped out.

as for passion vs. practicality, that’s one of the biggest struggles people deal with. ideally, you’d find something that balances both something you enjoy and that pays the bills. if music (or whatever passion you have) is what makes you feel alive, you don’t have to abandon it just because it’s not the most “stable” career. but it’s also smart to be realistic and have a backup plan, or at least something that supports you while you build your passion into something sustainable.

the key is not thinking of it as an either-or situation. you can pursue music while studying something more stable, or you can find ways to incorporate your passion into a career that still gives you financial security. tons of people start with a “safe” job while working on their creative goals on the side, and some even find ways to turn that creative passion into their main thing over time. there’s no one right answer, and you don’t have to lock yourself into one path forever. your early 20s are for experimenting, failing, and figuring out what actually makes sense for you.
