I think you are supposed to find how the number of units increases in each increasing pattern

#

start wiht the smaller pattern numbers and then count the tiles/units

#

in algebra, x will be the pattern number
(example, the growing dots; the first one with 1 dot would be x = 1, 5 dots would be x = 2, etc)
