How's this for a crystal pickaxe? Tint as appropriate.
The color variation is to give a bit of interest to the texture, instead of having it be pure shades of the same tone.
When you apply a multiplicative tint, it ends up looking much better. For example, here's a jade crystal pickaxe, an aquamarine one, and an amethyst one.
All of those were just based on applying the tint, and I've rarely been disappointed by how a random combination looks! The one thing that's hardest to get is a good, rich red.
