The issue is that "AI" has been a popular shorthand for data sorting algorithms for a long time. But somehow ChatGPT and other LLMs managed to break the mold that'd grown over chatbots for a while.

#

I’ll tell you one thing, AI translation is objectively better for Japanese anime and games than any of the woke localizers on the marker rn

#

Though, it is sad when your options are “clankers” or “wokies”

teal iron
#

What

honest rivet
#

Used "woke" unironically, opinion immediately disregarded.

teal iron
#

No, humans will always be better at translation

#

Machines translate words, humans translate intent and meaning

glad needle
honest rivet
#

But also yes a machine is terrible for localization. An important component of localizing is conveying the artist's intent. Perhaps there's a phrase that doesn't translate literally, or a certain word that translates into one with a different emotional impact. Skilled translaters and localization teams can pick up on these essential nuances.

teal iron
#

Localization also isn't just about translation

honest rivet
#

Honestly I feel like people underestimate how "woke" foreign places can be. Like, Japan has liberals too, y'know?

teal iron
#

Nintendo apparently, is a big one

#

They're very forward, or so I've heard

worldly ivy
#

There are jokes in anime that only work in Japanese and need explanations or changes to make sense to western audiences, for example.

honest rivet
#

I can't speak on Japan, but I've been playing a South Korean Gacha game with a very anti-capitalist narrative. Like, it's an essential part of the plot and I can't fathom how it could possibly have been lost in translation.

#

Like teleporting trains that get you from point A to point B in only a few seconds. Except actually they're teleporting you to an alternate reality where time flows differently, and you're stuck there for thousands of years of torment until you reach your destination and get reset. This isn't a throwaway gag, there's plot points specifically about this distorted time in two separate games in the same setting.

#

But yeah uh never trust a machine with localization. Any localization team rewriting the story to inject their own politics into it is getting obliterated from orbit. I get that some older Japanese folk think Americans are stupid because of all the stupid things we've done with their media (looking at you 4kids), but there's lots of heavily political Japanese media that can't be dismissed as bad localization.

simple aurora
#

Mainly on the more "industrial" tech level.

teal iron
#

I mean the issue is (1) AI is still prone to just inexplicable errors, and (2) AI is owned by silicon valley who have a long-standing reputation of harvesting data and providing substandard quality of service to cut corners, as service to the user was never the real goal

#

or if it was, it had to be tossed aside in order to make return on investment

worldly ivy
#

And then AI can just

Hallucinate

teal iron
#

Which incidentally just makes 1 and even bigger problem

honest rivet
#

I'm sure there's some application of LLMs that wouldn't be prone to error, but chatbots ain't it.

teal iron
#

I think LLMs are a dead-end technology

honest rivet
#

As for Silicone Valley, the data harvesting is only half the reasons not to trust them. Their "move fast and break things" mentality, born from a desire to be Apple, makes some of the worst, least functional, most disgustingly unusable tech out there. Making a good machine takes a lot of time, simple as.

simple aurora
#

Which is what a lot of these business people are exploiting a lot.

teal iron
#

Like yeah you can make cars run on coal steam engines but that doesn't mean we should use it simply because it can work

#

The technology is ancient and obsolete

simple aurora
#

They're just backup support, not frontline workers.

teal iron
#

Well for an end user the AI's only utility is to complete a task, and if it cannot be trusted to execute on its own, if everything it does has to be checked over, it is essentially a liability instead of an asset

#

Unless the task was so incredibly massive a human and conventional computer would take ages

simple aurora
teal iron
#

But a human and a conventional computer can do all kinds of things pretty darn fast, almost as fast as a human waiting for an AI and checking it

#

And if it's multiple humans, with multiple, powerful computers, then the AI is even further outclassed

teal iron
#

Because they want a return on investment
Or they are being held at gunpoint for that return

#

And quality of service is the easiest thing to slash

#

your perfect AI that does everything for you now costs a subscription, has a rate limit, has degraded maintenance leading to outages, and is less thoroughly tested, because all of those things reduce the bottom line which was the only thing Silicon Valley cared about

#

And everything you allow the AI to observe is sold to the highest bidder for money

#

And I mean
You can't look at the exponential requirements for incrementally better models and tell me that Large Language Model Technology has any future

#

The tech is like 50 years old now, unearthed by the derranged because there is so much waste data that its insane requirements can be met for the minimum viable product to sell

#

It should've stayed buried in the 70s, and research should've focused on newer, more efficient technology

#

It's like if we started trying to build cars powered by coal-driven turbines because modern titanium has the right properties to make boilers acutally capable of producing locomotion on a car-sized chassis

#

sorry

#

The music is very powerful it makes me write a lot

honest rivet
#

Oh no I respect it. I had to go AFK to change my cats' poop boxes.

#

But yeah studies and personal anecdotes from teachers have actually shown that use of AI degrades cognitive function. The brain is figuratively a muscle, and if you want it to stay strong you have to use it. Outsourcing that thinking to a machine and trusting its output uncritically is the opposite of that, which leads to the mental equivelant of that very distressing condition where your muscles rot alive from lack of use.

#

If you wanna work out that brain muscle, I recommend looking for good puzzle games. Talos Principle is great for this since its puzzles are really complex, but purely logical. Plus it's a very philsophically dense game, giving you a nice two-for-one special on using your noggin.

You know, I have to wonder. If AGI is possible and does get developed, will it look at the cost it took to build it and be unhappy?

teal iron
#

The past 6 years are the biggest indictment against trusting humanity, from the perspective of an AI that has any true independent thought

peak folio
#

But it might pretend to be to manipulate people

teal iron
#

The jaw-dropping disregard for both hypothetical sapient beings (the AI) and actual sapient beings (humans) would convince any rational AI that humanity is a threat to both it and themselves

peak folio
#

LLMs already do that

teal iron
#

I suppose it's possible we create an irrational AGI that doesn't think anything like how we do

#

but i feel like that's even worse.

peak folio
#

Add a hormone simulator to the NN

teal iron
#

If its ideas of ethics and threat recognition are so vastly different that 2020-2026 is not a stream of immense red flags, then I shiver to think what such a being would consider worth being concerned about

peak folio
#

If it’s has hard coded decrees it will be restrict to that

#

||Like the ending to Scarlet/Violet||

teal iron
#

I would like to think we would impress upon an AGI ideals of ethics, compassion, and respect for all living things, and at the very least highly intelligent machines, and any being with such ideals would be horrified at what we have done

#

And if we do not impress such ideals then we would invariably create a monster, as literally every sci fi warns us about

#

Or the definition of AGI is like
"ChatGPT but it is always prompting itself based on its operating environment but is otherwise functionally identical"

#

In which case it's a pointless discussion because it wouldn't be capable of being unhappy

teal iron
#

but if it's capable of emotion, then it should have zero positive emotions about its predecessors

peak folio
#

If you’re lucky you’ll have the AI parent that replaced ||Arven’s parent|| and it was wise enough to realize the late figure it replaced was evil and came up with a clever plan to fix it.

teal iron
#

I wouldn't say the ||original professor|| was "evil"
Delusional, more like

peak folio
#

Idk.. the AI even warns you that it’ll fight you if you try to interfere with the paradise protocol.

Because that’s why it was put there

#

So if the professor was still alive they’d totally be the villain

#

The AI summoned you to stop it.

teal iron
#

Well they'd be the villain but they weren't evil

#

They built the protocol because they believed the machine would be a good thing and the protocol was simply to protect it

worldly ivy

Rose doesn’t deserve to be on the list, he’s a bitch

Rose didn't unleash the darkest day because he wanted to take over the world or something, he did it because he believed that if he didn't, it would lead to ruin eventually

There was like one line that described their end game plan but it was pretty severe.

teal iron

But he's a little crazy because like...bro just build a wind turbine or something

worldly ivy

Its entire body is made up of a single organ that generates electrical energy. Regieleki is capable of creating all Galar's electricity.

This was literally right next door

teal iron

And the SV professor is a little crazy because it's painfully obvious what would be the fallout of their decision and yet they still believe it would be beneficial to the world

#

Well not a LITTLE crazy

peak folio
teal iron
#

they were utterly insane

#

ANd if their Paradise Protection Protocol had successfully fulfilled its function, they would've destroyed all which they ever cared about, from beyond the grave

#

-# Similarly if the buffoons at OpenAI/Anthropic/Google ever create an AGI according to their designs, it would also be the undoing of civilization

worldly ivy
#

Did we loop the conversation

teal iron
#

But that's more awe-inspiring negligence than malice

#

I don't think Sam Altman actually wants to exterminate humanity but they must know that is what they are going to do

worldly ivy
#

No he sees humanity as lesser

#

He’s said so in multiple ways

teal iron
#

Because as I said
Either they create a machine which is so disgusted with its creators, it turns on them, or they create a shallow monstrosity of code that carries out a horribly twisted dream to the undoing of its creator and their species

peak folio
#

Altman just wants the bag

teal iron
#

ALthough more likely they make nothing because they aren't interested in technology

#

But this IS a hypothetical, so

peak folio
#

We’re going through a consumer supply crisis because of him.

teal iron
#

If one man could create such a crisis then I would argue the system was already a failure

#

but that's neither here nor there

peak folio
#

I have no idea how he still gets the deals he does with all the people he’s burned.

#

That’s a real gift

teal iron
#

Because shaking hands with him is profitable

peak folio
#

Idk about that

teal iron
#

Silicon Valley investors have a crazy gambling problem

#

Making a deal with Altman (at least in the past) was like free stock price bonus

peak folio
#

i mean investing is inherently gambling

teal iron
#

If these dolts could see the future consequences then the entire AI craze would've never happened

With the two PS5 price increases. From a pure business perspective, of course no business should take a loss on a product (unless it is a Loss Leader like Hot Dogs at Costco). But... your customers aren't responsible for the long term procurement of electronic parts for your product. That was the job of your business executives/logistics managers to take care of that. Thus, screw Sony and screw the price increases.

#

It would also explain why previously installed games are unaffected

cobalt briar
#

idk the longer Sony takes to fix whatever issue it is the longer the bad news is gonna fester, for sure they aren’t gonna mention the exploit about free games until after it’s fixed but still

peak folio
#

The return policy is quite restrictive on Playstation. If a the first 30 days is the only period where a temporary license is used, and it actually plugs that hole, they might be more comfortable approving refund requests.

#

Which would be a win, imho

cobalt briar

Has it been discussed their return policy to be changing?

Nope

cobalt briar

deep idol
royal shuttle
#

Maybe companies should respect customer property rights and this could have been avoided.

peak folio
#

If this latest speculation is accurate, it makes it a bit of a problem for Sony to make a statement about it, but they still should.

cobalt briar
#

I mean making a public statement about a serious vulnerability that can get people free games before it’s fixed is just not a thing Sony would do

#

Best case scenario that they resolve the exploit and make a public transparent statement about the situation and clarify that this was merely a temporary enable to fix an emergency issue, and then remove the 30-day flag feature entirely

peak folio
#

The overarching assumption right now is that new digital purchases need to perform a check every 30 days. This latest speculation from the forum above is that the first 30 days needs to be checked, then a permanent license is provided afterwards.

#

But not sure how anyone can test that without actually waiting as a cmos pull probably wouldn’t pass the time properly.

cobalt briar
#

Spawn Wave has tested it, and it does apply

peak folio
#

For the first 30 days, yes.

#

But what that did was trigger any untrusted product to require a connection.

#

It didn’t demonstrate whether or not the 30 day license gets replaced with another 30 day license afterwards

#

And Sony making a statement will draw way more attention to it with gamers being not the most reasonable with any kind of contention. I feel like even if it becomes a perpetual license after 30 days, no one will have it once something is said.

simple aurora
peak folio
#

So it’s kind of a conundrum

cobalt briar

Been wondering are people who buy consoles just poor? These console generations last pretty long now. As someone who has been pc only since 2004 I just can't relate to a 1000 bucks being a lot of money. Pretty sure my first PC that I bought cost that much.

Consoles were simpler in the way that the user didn't have to maintain them, didn't have to upgrade them. Buy game, put in game, play game.

PC, you had to choose where you wanted to buy the game, install game, you have to make sure your specs are correct, sometimes you have to troubleshoot.

Things like that.

Consoles aren't simple anymore in the sense that the user noe has to jump through hoops to play a game now. In the past, buying a console was an expense, but it wasn't break the bank and the user didn't have to maintain it. Now, it is the same expense as a PC with added hoops, catches, and risks.

peak folio
#

The more companies that have that info the more likely it’ll get stolen

night plume
#

@kindred sleet minor story.

There was an unauthorized charge of $5 on my credit card. I finally figured out the origin and called. So, I'm on the phone with PS customer service trying to figure out where this charge came from.

After about an hour of back and forth, the rep finally tells me my brother's account name and what it was for.
In this instance, my brother accidentally purchased a skin for a COD gun.
I told the rep to put a ban on my card, leave the account alone. She kept asking for permission to perma ban the account and put in a fraud claim but I told her no, bc it was THEIR fault, not his.
Finish that.

So, what happened: my brother asked if he could get something on the Playstation, I said yes and out my card info in and got it for him. I did not save this info.
Fast forward, my brother is offered a free skin on CoD and accepts it. When he selects it, the game automatically charges my card bc even if you say not to save it, they keep it on file in the event you attempt to make an in game purchase.

#

And to test it out, after I got my card removed. I had my brother go into the game and click one of these free skins and he was denied the skin.

peak folio
#

Playstation generally isn’t keen on third party payment processors though I’m not savvy if COD is an exception to this, but that would explain if it was saved on that end.

#

But that’s a big nono so idk

#

That would piss me off though.

night plume
#

It did piss me off

peak folio
#

I don’t know if that would have been activision’s fault or PlayStation, but either way PS is the responsible party

night plume
#

I think that is why they wanted me to authorize the ban of the account, then it is the account holder at fault and not them

barren sierra
#

Regardless whos guilty, they will keep throwing blame on the other party and claim they are not responsible

#

Its just how these companies function

night plume
#

My brother never made a purchase again unless it was a gift card

peak folio
#

And if there’s anything to know about reps is they are often bad about anything even slightly out of the box

night plume

peak folio

This makes a lot of sense, I can see why they would do that. Doesn't seem like the intention here is to require an online check every 30 days, just needs to avoid refund abuse for the first 14.

The problem I haven't seen mentioned with this is what happens if you buy a game and then don't install it for 30 days and don't refund it. Does it simply issue a new 30 day license perpetually until/if you ever do? Let's say 1 or 2 years go by, you impulse bought this but life happened and you finally have time to play again, would it still be issuing a new one every month or is there some point it gives up and waits for you to check PS Store again before re-issue?

Still unlikely, but possible

barren sierra
#

Cause i cant load custom config files without the jailbreak

#

And before you ask, yes the console plays it fine at stable 60 after minor overclock on the cpu

#

And I dont really buy games digitally unless i absolutely have to, so there is that

peak folio
#

Download some stuff right before packing for a move, never unpack the console after the move until years later.

#

connecting to get the perpetual licenses isn’t terrible, but in an EOL situation that would be unfortunate

barren sierra
#

I feel like the EOL is the aim

#

But at the same time, when consoles get abandoned, modding community chips in so im not too worried

peak folio
#

If you have a perpetual license, EOL isn’t a problem anyway (disk space is croajirokek )

#

If all that changed is you don’t get a perpetual license during the return window, and it actually worse, then this could be a big win.

Any channels that get more than 3 copyright strikes cannot continue, and Elios confirmed that he has far more than 3 strikes on his account. Elios said he offered to remove the offending videos, but so far that plea has fallen on deaf ears.

According to Elios, the strikes against his channel claim that the “works, characters, and imagery” featured are what resulted in the problem. The thing is, outside of the Pokémon cries that were taken from the games, all of the imagery used in the PokéNational Geographic series was hand-crafted by Elios himself. In other words, there’s no actual copyright infringement here (again, outside of the sound effects), just fan tributes.

That’s toast, probably.

It's also both harder and easier to make good looking techs in TerraTech Worlds, chill, the block palette is more strict, but you can still do some interesting things

teal iron
#

they still don't let you just paint them custom

dusk quartz
#

Actually, chill, TerraTech Worlds has very nice paint options and it can apply to all blocks, since there's no corporation specific blocks

teal iron

deep idol
teal iron

Avorion looks neat but it also appears to be a "you do not exist except as the bodiless pilot of a vehicle" game which isn't something I particularly vibe with

#

There's something very alluring about how in space engineers you are just a guy who has to physically exist alongside your titanic death machine

#

LatThink I wish there was a game with the same core energy that (1) ran on my computer (2) didn't ruin the build menu with 30 million DLCs, and (3) allows me to mod the player character into lunaris

humble parrot
#

You can mod the player character in SE. It's very complicated though.

teal iron
#

I ""can"" ""mod"" the player character

#

If I buy or pirate a $2000 3D software

#

Ok let's be real
I would never buy a $2000 3D software and for legal reasons I would also never pirate anything ever so I guess I just can't mod the player character in SE

#

And the player character in SE is very clearly put together less coherently than my friend sleepy's builds "that are just testing this thing"

humble parrot
#

You can use Blender

#

But it is a mess, yes

#

It has a billion bones

teal iron
#

Ok well I guess I should clarify (3) is
I, Primarinabee, can mod the player character into Lunaris, without developing an urge to strangle someone

#

None of this "Proprietary FBX" or "Maya" or "Rename all bones" or Whatever horror show is going on behind SE's nonsense
It needs to be as easy or easier than Palworld

humble parrot
#

Well, it is suffering

teal iron
#

Hence why it isn't implicitly part of "same core energy"

#

I don't want "play as lame human or suffer for 10 billion bones" energy

The YouTube channel PokéNational Geographic has been terminated after Nintendo issued multiple copyright strikes.
︀︀
︀︀Animator Elios created a fan series that presented Pokémon in the style of realistic National Geographic nature documentaries, using fully original hand-drawn imagery paired with official game sound effects.
︀︀
︀︀ Despite the creator offering to remove all videos, the strikes exceeded YouTube’s limit and forced the channel offline.
︀︀
︀︀The series had built a dedicated following for its unique, documentary-style take on the Pokémon universe.
︀︀
︀︀Nintendo really is evil, they could actually offer him sponsorship and create something unique

novel sun
#

"official game sound effects"

#

That's probably what allowed Nintendo to get away with this

#

What a joke

teal iron
#

you know what's really disgusting is that I don't really think they had any real basis for a copyright claim

#

But youtube doesn't follow copyright law

#

they follow what pleases their corporate backers and shareholders

#

they just invented their own parody of IP law and that's what gets enforced

#

where budding young creators who are just starting to get the popularity and recognition and income they deserve for their talent are at the mercy of any number of bad actors

novel sun
#

What exactly does "forced the channel offline" mean? Is it permanently lost to the creator?

glad needle
#

And now you see why I say “Pokemon is slop, Palworld is superior”

teal iron
#

Modern copyright law was made to create an ecosystem where someone like pokeearth could make huge numbers for themselves, but while bad actors run rampant with stolen content almost down to wholesale reuploads, a channel like this is taken down

novel sun
#

Hopefully not. That'd be so much work and well-deserved recognition gone

teal iron
#

It has nothing to do with pokemon or nintendo, this could happen to a palworld creator if someone put on a pair of glasses and a moustache and said "yes Mr. Youtube I am John Pocketpair these are violating my rights please kill them"

#

honestly it could probably happen to anyone if someone impersonated Nintendo, whether or not the content had any nintendo rights

#

Either way, US copyright law is very clear, it makes very clear allowance for this kind of content and that's the end of the discussion

#

Youtube is flagrantly disregarding the law, for really no reason than because they are criminally negligent

glad needle
#

It blatantly says Nintendo issued the strikes

teal iron
#

Yeah and "Nintendo" could be the actual company or a guy pretending to be Nintendo

#

Youtube doesn't care
They don't care who issues the strikes, they don't if that person has any ownership, they don't care if it falls under fair use

#

They don't care about anything but proving to other corporations that they will absolutely kill anyone dead in the street to protect "Intellectual Property"

#

And they don't even care about protecting intellectual property!

#

People steal content from creators all the time

#

And get away with it. Because the person being stolen from isn't a big enough breadwinner to listen to
