The reason why iPhones need a case and a screen protector is due to how easily the products break on a simple drop that, say, a same-priced, high-end Samsung device (in the Galaxy S line of products) would not break at all (just a few mild scratches at worst, as long as the phone wasn't dropped onto a sharp corner / etc.).
