This is going to be a very crude explaination missing a lot of key information:

A lot of plants are cross bred in ways to make the plant bigger, more productive, sweeter, spicier, etc.. But they aren't able to reproduce.

It is kind of like breeding a lion with a tiger for a liger and a tiger with a lion for a tigon. One of them can breed, but the other is infertile. It is what happens to many plants.

To reproduce the plants, you use cuttings.

It is a mandarin(type of orange) bred with a lemon.
Then that result is bred with a kumquat.
