I have an idea for a book where a virus targets coffee plants and 95% of the plants get wiped out making it so governments have to make it illegal to sell coffee to anyone except labs licensed to research the virus, and all other plants are for animals to not go extinct.
In the beginning was scalping and panic buying, then it lead to a black market ring, actual coffee heists, and the cartel selling coffee but using coke (not the soda) to reduce the cost of producing coffee. Aside from altitude levels, there are no roads it needs to follow.
Also, most aircraft really shouldn't be near one another while they are flying, too, so that further cuts down on required programming for navigation.

It is possible. I was actually at the Kennedy Space Center in January this year. It got super-cold down there, and fir several weeks! Sea World's Discovery Cove closed for the first time ever since it was opened and I was outside that day in a Carhart hoodie, and my fingers still went numb going from building to building. I never got the opportunity to watch one of the rockets take off (which sucked). Still the experience at the space center was enthralling for a science geek like me!

You find a bit in Palpedia entries, a bit in journals, and a bit in NPC dialogue and quests.
Tl;dr is that civilization has been on this island for a long time and they've learned to make their own firearms despite being separated from the mainland, possibly suggesting something washed ashore and got copied. Also there's these powerful monsters that people control with magic rocks, but that doesn't mean living there is free since a Mammorest could instantly kill you by stepping on you.
Probably the only reason one faction hasn't taken the whole island is that the ones with the power to don't wish to. PIDF basically has governance over the whole island, Pal Genetic Research seems content to make their abominations in the snow, the Sakurajima fellas are happy where they are... the only ones who'd realistically fight for territory are the Rayne Syndicate and Free Pal Alliance, who don't like each other and clash regularly.
