That kind of system is nice because the protocol isn’t subject to one company just deciding they’re going to destroy it.

Element works but you are starting from scratch making your own rooms and convincing people to join them with an interface similar to Telegram. Stoat is from scratch but a very, very like-discord experience out of the box with global custom emotes free. Beeper is useful to stay in touch with any existing platform you don't want to fully leave

I think one of the big issues is that these games are taking so long to produce, they miss their initial mark.
Look at mech games: you had BattleTech in 2018, MWO plodding along since what, 2008?, and then Daemon ex machnina?
Then suddenly you get a bunch of mech games released all together a few years later: Armored Core 6, Front Mission remasters, various attempts by solo/indy devs...
Same thing with Cyberpunk... CP2077 comes out, and a bunch of people go into that.
Some do well (Cloudpunk), others aren't as good...

I just had a random thought. You could play a Mimic character in DnD basically like a Klyntarr Symbiote from Marvel.
Their sentient, some are relatively intelligent, amorphous shape shifters that can perfectly imitate almost any shape or form. Some mimics can actually be negotiated with and pacified with offerings of food.
Imagine a player character who has basically paired with a mimic to function like a venom symbiote, helping the character on their quest and in return getting to eat any goblins or other ilk they come across on their journey.
