tranquil obsidian

there's been a few calls I've seen where people have asked to be able to filter out Chinese reviews

sick flame
long shard
#

hey guys

rare coral
#

There's another angle to this too. Games can have vastly different experiences by region due to localization.

tranquil obsidian
#

yup; Japanese players will see jrpgs lose loads of score due to a bad English localisation

#

... which doesn't really affect them and their decision process

peak folio
#

Regional interest is very real even in a perfect world.

#

It’s still an interesting decision since it’s been normalized for so long.

rare coral
#

Personally I care less about the score and more the reviews themselves. I've seen too many non-sequitors spamming the positive and negative reviews.

peak folio
#

I personally don’t look at them at all unless someone shows me a meme, but steam reviews mean a LOT to the devs.

#

and/or the companies involved

rare coral
#

For example its hard to take a lot of steam reviews seriously when you see nonsense like "reccomended game; this game is absolute ass don't play it"

#

Or "best slavery and warcrime simulator ever"

peak folio
#

“This game is completely unplayable and you couldn’t pay me to run this on my machine.”. 12,427 hours played

rare coral
#

Real.

rare coral
#

Every now and then you find a really good review. Or one that gives a good caveat entour over the addition of or changes to in game monetization.

tranquil obsidian
#

overall: Very positive
recent: mixed
what happened here?

rare coral
#

Exactly

#

Then I read the reviews to figure out why

#

Sometimes a new gen of gamers play it and hate it because not following current trends

rare coral
snow thistle
#

I think for the vast majority of English speakers gamers, the change on Steam doesn’t really have any actual effect

#

You guys were largely seeing the English score anyway and so far there hasn’t been any example of a game’s English score changing drastically

#

It seems to be a more welcome change to non-English speakers though

#

Only a few games really breakout globally every year, and those games will see no real change. It’s the average game where this probably has a lot more meaning.

#

Myth of Empires is a good example maybe of how the game is received differently across regions

rare coral
# snow thistle It seems to be a more welcome change to non-English speakers though

Yeah, for example if we get butthurt over a localization, it's no longer a issue for another country which would have a completely different impression. They have more relevant reveiws. As often times the developers themselves are not directly responsible but the publisher is. It also is good data for developers too. Germans love David Hasselhoff after all.

snow thistle
#

Or maybe ARK is better because it has a better range

#

Anyway, I think it’s actually quite an insight change

#

It’s just not really for English speakers 😄

#

Although its English speakers complaining about the change haha

tranquil obsidian
#

tbh i kinda prefer it??

#

feels like I'm getting a score more aligned with my own demographic (there's certainly a better way of wording that)

rare coral
tranquil obsidian
#

now we just need to separate UK English from American English

rare coral
#

I do wish review scores carried less weight though. Not because "the plebeians" but because there's just so many external factors involved that it's lost most meaning.

A meme was recently posted calling PS4 "retro". This is blatantly untrue. Retro is not a moving point that is always some fixed length of time before the present. PS2 is still a modern console, and will always be a modern console. PS1 and N64 are renaissance consoles. SNES and Genesis are retro. Gameboy Advance is a retro console in a handheld form factor, and DS is renaissance. There is less of a fundamental difference between the PS5 and the PS2, than there is between the PS2 and the PS1.

you know how nintendo claims to own the rights to riding flying mounts? Well in 2004 Electronic arts created a flying mount in harry potter prizoner of azkaban which predates any and all claims which would make nintendo's mechanics and patents illegal to patent when EA holds that right .

Also to late about ea. I tweeted Atlas, Square-Enix, and Bandai-Namco to make sure nintendo isn't violating there patents. I would urge people to people spam those companies to make Nintendo lose any if most Poke'mon patents. Of which one patent is just the use of Vr and using the right stick for the camera. Which Sony actually owns that patent thanks to the Ps1.

Pretty sure Warner Bros would fight Nintendo. If Poke'mon got in the way of hogwarts legacy 2 Hypogriff ridding mechanics XD so nintendo will lose one way or another

At least digimon cyber sleuth was more innovative than most pokemon. An its weird how people forget Nintendo allowed Square Enix to use monster catching in world of final fantasy

hearty whale

Pretty sure kingdom hearts dream drop distance had monster battleing mechanics with the dream eaters that was somehow allowed on the 3ds .

river needle

yeah it did

they also allowed dqm jokers 1,2 and 3, fossil fighters and ff champions, spectrobes 1 and 2 on the ds and 3 on the wii

with no question im guessing

and dqm joker dark prince on the switch

and that did fairly well compared to the rest

#

oh and all 4 digimon games on the ds

hearty whale

shame the series didnt catch on. The demos seemed very promosing since they had the mmo rpg mechanics similar to cyber connect 2 mobile game little bronx story which sucks never had a console port T.T

river needle

in world of ff they used spheres

i tried to play it but it was when it started being broken on pc so couldnt remember

in woff you could stack monsters to boost attack power, unstack, use your norma/ chibi forms to change the flow of battle while being a mix of ff with pkmn but with ours of voice acting

river needle
#

i dont get why they did the lip sync in scavio without even having voice acting

river needle

yeah that was pretty good

nintendo could never

hearty whale

The whole game is like that tho the game actually is split into 2 games in one install since, there's 2 endings

#

the game is like $20 on the eshop i think so vs $80-200 for pokemon id say woff is way better

river needle
#

its on switch?

hearty whale
#

yeah and it runs at a smooth 30 fps at I think 1020x710p tho screen recording says 1080x480 or something like it. But it never crashed once .

river needle
#

thats not too bad

#

i might invest but i got borderlands 4 coming next week then digimon 2 weeks after that or so

hearty whale
#

I would skip borderlanes 4 honestly. The fact it uses a weird drm that kills ssd drives by flooding the ssd / sd drives with pointless cache just isn't worth it

river needle
#

i already got it preorded so im in too deep

hearty whale
#

Lets hope it runs better than the tech demo than barely did 15 fps

river needle
#

from the videos ive seen its looking pretty good

hearty whale
#

Lets hope it's real gameplay not using the frame gen garbage

river needle
#

i thought bl3 gameplay was good the story is just what made me despise the game

#

and the dlcs were meh

hearty whale
#

The tiny tina game wasn't bade. But even that was kinda meh without much to do .

river needle
#

yeah if it was longer and had actual dlc content instead of like 5 minute maps i would have liked it more

hearty whale
#

Personally I find alice madness returns to be a better game for combat and a weird sureal vibe

river needle
#

i get that. im big on character custimization and builds so with that and the gunplay borderlands just scratches that itch for me

hearty whale
#

Than you should give Fuga melodies of steel a shot since the demos for the 1st and 2nd game are pretty beefy if you like a good tank rpg .

river needle
#

ill put em on the wishlist

# simple aurora Truly a scum if their patenting of the Nemesis system isn't bad enough. <:Chille...

WB Games added Denuvo drm to games like harry potter quidditch champions which is a solo player game with online elements.

Origionally Denuvo was no where on the steam page. But the tos was updated secretly to where you dont own the game.

Thankfully it uses unreal engine 4 so the source code can be decompiled.

But, with denuvo killing ssd drives by constantly creating and deleting data. Playing any WB Games is a risk that can ruin drives.

When asked about removing the Drm the steam support staff for WB games shares a discord group that hates modders and people who want to own there games

hearty whale
# simple aurora Truly a scum if their patenting of the Nemesis system isn't bad enough. <:Chille...

If you wanna talk scummy.

I pointed out the switch version of Hogwarts Legacy is the most stable. Decompiling that build and assets would help lower end pcs.

WBG actually blocked most user created mods with the newer modding dev kit thats 200 freaking gb .

An the offical mod support broke the mods people liked. Thats how petty WB Games are.

Even mentioning a offline patch could get you flagged as an abuse post.

Sounds about right. Since, Nintendo cant even be bothered to program games at 60fps on there own console.

Nintendo couldnt even get a gamecube game running at 60fps. So the shills defended 30fps in 2025 xF

With how much of a sorry state pokemon az is. I doubt Nintendo would make dev kits. Since Nintendo is worried someone will hack the console.

At this point Nintendo needs the same hate during the wiiu. Where devs dropped nintendo like crazy.

simple aurora
#

They're really trying hard to be Japan's WB Games.

#

Not even EA. Croajiro_Stab

#

Or Ubisoft.

hearty whale
#

At least EA lets you keep your games and sometimes adds legacy games as a free bonus for certain games. Which costs $20-30 usually vs $80 nintendo does with simple edits any noob can make editing a config files XD

#

You know the switch2 could add wiiu pad support for dual screen gameplay. Or let the switch lite have a app that acts like the ssb4 3ds app to act as a bluetooth controller to make dual screen gaming possible. While bloody adding wii remote support which the switch os blocks for some reason.

#

You know whats evil about Nintendo? they say accounts for devices arn't linked. But if you added eshop points to a switch. Linked the same id to a 3ds. Those same points would carry over. The 3ds gets installed to the sd/ 3dNintendo folder while switch games get installed to the sd/ Nintendo folder. Meanwhile, wiiu games get installed to the sd/ wiiu/apps folder if not not mistaken. So there would be no conflicting issues but Nintendo got lazy. Since the switch2 can't emulate 360p games like how nintendo said the 3ds can't emulate gba games when the 3ds ambassador's had access to gba games running at 60fps XD

where it gets nuanced is when AI is involved, but didnt generate it

teal iron
#

If I open the door and then throw a grenade that's a different discussion
The ai scraper instigated it and likely had warning that the art was not to be scraped or stolen or used for training

#

Ai viruses are a response to the failure of society to protect their right to decide whether they want their art used this way

peak folio
#

People are arguing that training AI models is fair use, but there are issues on both sides of that argument.

teal iron
#

If ai didn't steal art without consent and actively ignore requests to exclude works, or if society had rules preventing the behavior, this wouldn't be a problem

#

AI brought this upon itself
They dug their own grave and screw any legality; they should lie in it.

tranquil obsidian
#

the problem is that the "stealing" argument is used, but legally speaking stealing would require an intent to deprive. an AI "stealing" art doesnt not deprive the artist of the original work, and thats the hurdle the lawmakers keep getting hung up on

hearty whale
# peak folio Not quite how it works, copyrights are automatic in many cases.

If you post art it doesn't automatically make it copyrighted . you do have to go to the actually copyrighted office to make any product copyrighted. If you don't have a copyright id to such works with patents. Than the copyright claims are void. I've been down this road so many times with vocal synths and video games.

peak folio
teal iron
#

Society and its laws not making this the logical conclusion is a failure on society's part

peak folio
#

Patents are not automatic, ofc

teal iron

A world built on simple compassion and respect would see ai only using images that specifically grant permission from their creator

hearty whale
tranquil obsidian
#

"if a law is introduced to prevent an AI "stealing" your work by copying your artstyle, should that same law be applied to a human?"
this is where this situation can get dangerous. if we define "learning from an artists work" as "stealing", how far can it reach? are we going to end up in a situation where "you can't be inspired by pokemon unless you have nintendo's permission"?

teal iron
#

AI relevant to this discussion is a commercial product and all uses of it are therefore commercial and are subject to the same rules as using it for direct profit

peak folio
teal iron
#

You cannot download a public image and use it commercially, unless you want to get a DMCA or conventional copyright lawsuit

hearty whale
teal iron
#

"I use it to train my AI for only personal stuff" that's great and you should always remember that no file is inherently safe and what happens after you click download is still your responsibility

tranquil obsidian
#

the issue here isnt that the image is being used publicly;
-an artist posts an image publicly
-i see the image and like it and it inspires me to draw something
-i upload my own artpiece inspired by it
-artist claims i "stole" their art and uploaded it

hearty whale
teal iron

peak folio

But take a look at that Antireal / Bungee situation

hearty whale

essentially when you post you can only be protected by the creative commons terms

peak folio
teal iron
#

Ethically and truthfully speaking,
Taking someone's work, public domain or not, with the intent of using it for your own gain, without asking permission or even notifying the person, especially if said gain is monetary, is

stealing.

tranquil obsidian
#

so being inspired by someones art and drawing my own is stealing?

teal iron
#

The law may be twisted and fractured and warped to say whatever a person wants, but the truth remains

tranquil obsidian

teal iron

I know regardless of what the law says and stealing is wrong. As far as I can tell CC lisence is basicly fair use protection nothing more that protects the end user on art sites. This is why Nintendo can screw over artists and use fan art as offical art without paying the artists

peak folio
#

particularly when they can afford legal

hearty whale
#

This is why you always read the EULA and I mean always read it

teal iron
#

Inspiration and AI training are fundamentally different

Humans learn and feel and grow
Machines extrapolate data points

peak folio
#

Neural nets aren’t as different as you might think.

teal iron
#

They're machines

#

Pale imitations of the beauty of an organic mind

peak folio
#

They have much fewer neurons (for now)

hearty whale
#

Machine learning basiclly takes parts and learns from it. Than learns the basics of the shading. Which at it's core is how people learn art. Just a bit sloopy when people don't understand how to usa loras , pt, negative prompts, and understand how computers work to make the computer draw like a human

peak folio
#

AI generation usually just kicks out a result and skips all the tools that a human has to use to get there.

#

People have been figuring out prompts to kick out “WIPs” but obviously those are fake.

hearty whale
#

i wouldn't say it skips the tools. If you ignore things like sepitone, traditional art and other things in the positive prompt than yes the tool will spit out anything. But, if your precious. The ai can be as deliberate as a human depending on the model type, what prompts are used, how many steps are given, and so on which is generally ignored

peak folio
#

The AI isn’t trying to stroke a brush or jump between implements in Photoshop, but it has seen millions of examples of what can be done with those tools and kicks out something similar.

hearty whale
#

I can see that point but what if the ai is trained only on 8-30 images and can only replicate that style based on that dataset with tags. Than, the whole stroke thing and lack of understanding how humans draw does fall apart with stable diffussion models

peak folio
#

If it’s trained on that size data set it will definitely struggle.

rancid oxide
#

ai is the tool, a means to an end, but it isnt the only tool, and it isnt the only means
using only it gives mediocre and soulless results

peak folio
#

That’s why the popular models are being trained on literally everything in sight permissions be damned.

hearty whale
#

yes the sd 1.5- 2.0 will struggle. But sdxl pony has promise. sd 3.0 is veries since it was the very thing sd 2.0 tried not to do. Wich dall-E which I assume most people use with bing and some other services is was most people use. Which causes a missconception about how to use ai tools correctly.

peak folio

inspiration implies something new, something unbased on previous data

learning is entirely from previous

hearty whale
#

again that veries very heavilly on the Dall-E and Sd variants of the models. Since what you said is half true and half false

teal iron
#

Humans master a technique, through practice and such

#

There will be no machine in our lifetime that more than superficially imitates organic thought

#

There may NEVER be such a machine

hearty whale
#

there's no doubt a machine can't replicate a human thought at least for now. A machine would need to be programned to understand and perceive what a human would think which would take years to propprly train based on tags and prompts with what if answers

teal iron
#

Fundamentally, current AI will never achieve that

#

It's not a matter of training or prompts or data, they struggle to copy humans, that's nothing like being human, learning human

peak folio
hearty whale
#

technically yes and techincally no . People also thought v synths couldnt sound very much human but that has been very much disproven with vocals like teto kasane in synth v. Ai art is no different. Just with images instead of vocals .

teal iron

And comparing these machines to human concepts like inspiration is frankly stupid

Nothing of value or substance will come of this because no one wants value or substance

#

They want money, and the moral and ethical considerations of a genuine AI are too expensive when inventing a new statistic to claim your glorified random number machine is smart is so so profitable

hearty whale
#

you know the irony of all this? Most ai tools arnt even ai .

teal iron
#

These machines will die, abandoned, when the regulation cracks down, when the investors have emptied their pockets, and a new form of technology comes along thinking it will be used for the betterment of mankind

#

The data centers will be sold to the highest bidder and torn down for scrap
The programs will go unmaintained, and the Internet will only have pettabytes of shallow empty promises and wasted text to remember this time by

hearty whale
#

yes the tech will die but eventually something else will replace it. Just like ditial art to traditional art, cgi art to digital art, and so on

teal iron
#

They said the same with nft art

#

Now where is it?
Abandoned, forgotten, used frequently in scams

hearty whale
#

nfts was different tho it was just a scam.

teal iron
#

No no noo nfts were a tool, remember?

#

The next generation of art creation!

#

Artists would be inherently protected from fraud, and buyers would truly own their purchases!

hearty whale
#

nfts was just a scam so people could con money from the unknowing. Just like how the real id, and some other stuff are scamming people. The ai tech is more like legos in a weird sense.

teal iron
#

It was going to change the world, it would become a permanent feature of society and if you didn't hop in you'd get left out

#

Sounds a little too familiar.

hearty whale
#

I think crypto is the new nft

teal iron
#

Wonder where all those blockchain investors went

#

Most of them pocketed a lot of cash through rampant wire fraud in the days governments were too slow or incompetent to label it as such

hearty whale
#

alot of nft bros did go start the gamer gate 2 or something and started sweet baby inc and another feminist organization to attack video games. So the same people behind nfts never left .

teal iron
#

I wonder if they sought a new vehicle of speculative investment, one they could inflate the value of and hype to take another stab at their greater scheme of redefining the world order with them on top and the rest of humanity groveling at their feet

#

One which also promised to change the world

hearty whale
#

sorry brain fart it was collect shout I was trying to think of XD

teal iron
#

With minimal government oversight

hearty whale
#

but yeah the x nft supports are now attacking video games and trying to make laws claiming to defend kids. Meanwhile those pushing these laws are actual pedos. So the cycle always repeats

#

but ai does have a time and place like image to 3d models which can be a massive time savor. An the ai used for vr models is also much better which uses some predictive ai which is very useful

teal iron
#

I mean AI has some uses although I think it's still a little too new right now

Get a rotisserie chicken, and after taking off all the meat, simmer the remaining bones and skin and gel for a few hours, with some pepper and onions and other vegetables, and then you have bone broth.
