I do not own the game, but from what I understand, the game has severe performance issues and what content is in the game is incredibly easy and scarce (According to the community). Players are also stating that it's a game that felt like it required more development time.
Another post that I saw also offered up some perspective. In comparison to Monster Hunter: Rise, with the timeframe that Wilds has gone through in terms of release date and time passed after having released the game (Roughly a five month period for both games), it had already received its third title update. In comparison, Wilds has had one title update so far and the second one is slated to be released by the end of June.
I believe the game will turn things around, but it'll take more time and the community will grow more impatient as a result.

Like also, just logistically, if you were to personally fly over to japan and back to buy a "region free" console, just the flight itself costs money, that's not a zero investment thing you just do without a cost ascociated that isn't time, you can't make up that flight cost with time or effort, it's a cost you have to factor into the console price itself.

Switch 2 are not manufactured in Japan. They are manufactured in Vietnam, so there are still shipping costs for Japan units.
Nintendo moves the units themselves and these costs are factored into the MSRP directly (among other things). It's how they can say the console is $450 and you find it at that exact price in Target or whatever.
Heck, the price goes up in Europe the closer you geographically get to Russia.
