I loved an mmo back in the day bc all of the real monsy items were cosmetics. They had 2 items that weren't but they weren't that big of an advantage, so not many minded.

Then they released an assassin class and a bunch of items with them that if you bought the items, you could pvp people you shouldn't be able to. Ex: I was level 60 and a level 5 assassin could 1 shot me if they bought an item from the store. No item, they had to be around my level and I had a chance to react if they messed up.

Two mistakes beforehand really. Making the SEGA CD attachment for the Genesis was fine, nothing wrong with it. But making the 32X while the Saturn was upcoming, was the first blunder. The second blunder was going with such an exotic set up for the Saturn, dual CPU, dual video display processors, a sound processor, system control unit, etc. And so not only was it difficult to develop games for, it was also expensive and thus a $400 launch price while the PlayStation 1 was $300.

Launch titles looked way better than PS1, sure… but then late in PS2’s life you got in-generation impoverishment shown on GoW and Shadow of the Colossus and it was like “whaaa?”

Well, PC Engine CD-ROM was released in 1988, the first console that used CD-ROM. SEGA CD was 1991.

Though, yeah, Saturn released before PS1, and Dreamcast released before PS2.

That’s just media, but yeah. Nintendo was extremely resistant to using optical formats for a long time.

It ended up making sense in hindsight. Dreamcast suffered from pirated copies. While N64? You did not see illegal copies until like 4 or 5 years after release.

The reason Playstation even exists was because Sony got burned working on a Nintendo CD.

The main benefit in hindsight, was that N64 cartridges and thus the games, would load VERY fast. Go look at Mario 64, OOT, etc., the levels load in only 1 or 2 seconds. While PS1 games, good God... you might be waiting 20+ seconds for a level to load.

Yeah, loading times were never an issue on cartridges. Optical could hold a lot but was extremely slow.

Even with Gamecube, GC games would load faster than PS2 games, because the discs were smaller, thus a lower possible physical distance for the laser needing to move on its platform thingy. XD

Rotation speed and how far out on the disc the data is a big deal, the laser seeking was something.

Squadron 42 was one of the first games in production to leverage performance capture (getting facial expressions in addition to body motion) and that shit still ain’t out. Like a decade later games are already shipping that did it with cell phones.

I played too many games that are fun without that.
and they aren't open world endless games, they are just straight story games with mini-games games.

like Zelda OoT or Zelda MM, the latter in particular is fun to replay a lot

I've played both of those games. I think what bothers me, though a small gripe and more subjective than anything else, is that there's nothing else to do once you get 100% completion. This can be said of all games, but I personally really like games where there are fun mechanics to interact with when the game is over. They're also both games focused on the narrative aspects, which isn't bad and I do appreciate them for that.

Going back to Ultimate Destruction, it was fun to mess around in the two maps even after the game was done since destroying everything as the Hulk was so much fun to do, especially after getting all of his combat upgrades.

I don't really need that much more once a game is over, if the game experience itself was satisfying on a personal level, you find a reason to replay it.
Like for me FFX is one of those ultimate games for me that I have several 100 even thousand hour plus save files in, and half of that time comes from Blitzball.
That one is the ultimate minigame for me, fun, engaging, stuff to unlock and min-max, satisfying.
They removed it completely in FFX-2 but at least they replaced it with spherebreak, not as satisfying in terms of unlocking new stuff, that's completely up to RNG, but at least fun to play, albeit you're really limited on actually having the right coins, which can run out which is not nice.
Wish there was a way to just trade them via some currency you should've gotten instead of just minor amounts of Gil.

Or Kingdom Hearts, is a series where I can replay each entry over and over and it's just so satisfying, as the combat is just super tight.

Also in terms of replayability and playing after it's done.

I'm the type of player that found Path of Exile became super boring once you get into the medium tiers of maps, because the progression was super slow if you didn't crank up the drop rates on them, and die in one hit if your build missed a few stats, and to me the most fun is from the point before reaching the medium tier maps, and then just re-rolling another build, I could never beat any "endgame" boss, because they were just too hyper specific for what you needed, and doing the fight yourself without knowing what to expect, just meant losing that attempt completely without learning anything, it was just unfun and frustrating.

There's probably endless stuff to do, but for the regular person that doesn't play a single game as a job that game is not really approachable in the end game.

OOT takes... if you do NOT use a guide book on a first time playthrough, I would say OOT easily takes 60+ Hours even as a grown adult. That is long enough.

I had 100+ hours on N64 OOT back in the late 90's, and I never found a single glitch/bug that gets used for speed runs these days. Not one.

Anywho. Back to DK Bananaza. Dunno, the new trailer this week actually made me LESS interested in the game... Felt sorta like a DK version of Minecraft tbh. And, meh, Child Pauline.... I mean, she is adorable, but.... idk, I ain't gonna lie to y'all, I just prefer hot grown women in my games these days. 😅

Even in Zelda games, you never truly had a "child partner" with you. In OOT, Navi is a fairy, not a human. MM, again Tatl is a fairy lol. Minish Cap you got a hat lol. Wind Waker you got more or less an Elder Statesman. With Twilight Princess, that isn't Midna's actual form, plus she doesn't talk like a child.

DS games get dirty easily, and are a pain to clean.... Only want to REALLY get them clean, is to open the cartridge so that you got full access to the contact pins, clean the pins with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol, and then reglue the cart back together.
