Back when Gamecube was the new system, my dad bought me a new game.
I was confused, bc when I undwrapped it(was a gift in wrapping paper) it didn't have the plastic around it.
I assumed my dad bought me a used game, which was fine to me.

Unfortunately, the game didn't work :/ I would get to the same spot in the game each time and it would fail.

Dad takes me to the store to return the game and they tried to give me partial credit bc I "broke" a brand new game that I unwrapped. I argued that it didn't come in the plastic wrap. We went back and forth before I won.

I won bc that store implemented a new policy. They open all the new games and store them behind the counter >.> the copy I had was used bc the employees were taking the games home to play them.

Pocket Pair’s earlier game, Craftopia (2020), featured many of the same mechanics now present in Palworld: monster taming, mounts, automation, open-world crafting, and more. Nintendo took no action then—because Craftopia flopped.

Only after Palworld sold over 30 million copies did Nintendo suddenly file patents (post-release) and launch lawsuits. This isn’t legal protection—it’s market suppression. They’re not suing the hundreds of other monster-catching games. They’re suing the one that threatens them.

And the hypocrisy runs deep.

Many of Pokémon’s core systems—monster collecting, evolution, turn-based combat—have clear lineage from Dragon Quest V and other early RPGs. From visual UI design to overworld structure, there are near one-for-one comparisons between early Pokémon games and Dragon Quest mechanics. Nintendo built on those ideas with success—but now wants to block others from doing the same to them?

Even worse, Palworld isn’t even marketed to the same demographic. Pokémon targets kids. Palworld is for teens and adults—featuring gunplay, exploitation themes, survival mechanics, and factory systems. The overlap is superficial.

U.S. case law backs this perspective:

Morton Salt v. Suppiger (1942): patents can’t be used to restrain trade

Lasercomb v. Reynolds (1990): IP rights cannot be used to eliminate competition

Nintendo didn’t defend an invention. They filed late, targeted success, and ignored their own history of borrowing from prior genre-defining games.

This isn’t about protecting intellectual property.

It’s about hurt feelings that someone finally out-branded Pokémon—and proved the genre can thrive without them.

it isn't that's the point, go talk to pocket pairs lawyers, I don't think anyone here is really interested in this topic anymore as it's been talked to death now.
Many people just find gameplay mechanic patents stupid and that should be the end of it, we would need to go to the people in charge of the government to change how things work, go make your own political party if you want real change or go to official public hearings about problems.
