When the iPad was relatively new, the single highest rated eBook app at the time was Kobo (in part because it had an achievement system). You could buy epub books in the app seamlessly and do everything you’d expect. When Apple released iBooks they changed the app store policies where the existing Kobo app no longer qualified because in-app purchases of any kind became subject the 30% app store fee which used to only apply to paid software or paid components of the software itself. Not only that but they weren’t even allowed to tell where or how to buy books from the app itself, so they were forced to basically ruin the app while iBooks just did everything Kobo used to be able to do.
