I’d be curious about pixel art sprites tbh, mods for other games that allow mods “might” come under “ask for permission” if it’s a mod you want to make publicly available without cost. I mean, if cities skylines had a “replace all traffic with chillets” mod, I’d give it a go.

The legal framework to persecute you for it is in place, so you are gambling on the goodwill of a publishing company or developer, or even an agency taking it on themselves to go after you, like a separate legal department for a company

And yes a palworld representative said a 100% fan made game using no assets and released for free should be fine

Doesn't mean it will be, things can change, different opinions may be held over at pocketpair by others, the fact is, as Nintendo have proven, they can sue, no matter how frivolous, you can get a cease and desist, the ability for them to shut you down on a whim means they cannot be trusted not to

Well for my personal efforts in learning to make and actually making games?

Yeha, never going to post any fanworks anyways. No picture, no video, nothing. Its a personal work that stays off the net and lives only as long as it needs to be on my hard drive, before tkaing whats required to incorporate it eleewhere in a vastly modified form.

For me, fanprojects are extended stepping stones that never see light of day. Their purpose is to capture concepts, as intended by the series, until theres an understanding how to go about modifying it to point it no longer is the same.

Even if a Game using such completes? No guarantee it goes out there. For me it is a hobby, not a way to earn money.
