Above and beyond to draw attention away from actual engineers and scientists imo

small berry
#

which are actually running the company

#

regardless of the spotlight

full mountain
#

I think the shame is that idiots somehow think Elon is the "mastermind" behind Tesla and SpaceX, doing all the heavy math and engineering and stuff, when really all he does is just own the companies

#

Dude barely even runs em

small berry
#

I'm not smart enough to discern if the go fast and break things involvement Elon must have had regarding SpaceX has helped it or hindered it, that would make an amazing 2 hour video

full mountain
#

Elon is just a trustfund baby with a superiority complex

#

Dude hasn't worked a day in his life

#

Eff dat guy

small berry
#

I think that's a sensationalised narrative, I think he's a CEO, he becomes the face of the companies he owns and he has a titanic responsibility at that

queen vale
#

He doesn't behave like he's responsible is the thing

small berry
#

I think as a CEO he has to have some involvement in the fundamental principles of his companies and so far only Paypal kicked him out

small berry
#

he has to become a voice, cause he's the CEO of a public forum

#

he's not smart so that voice isn't really smart

full mountain
#

Just because someone's rich doesn't mean they're smart, faaaar from it

small berry
#

that's part of my point, he has some knowledge that would make a smart human probably 10 times what he is right now

#

but that doesn't change he has a vast amount of critical knowledge to pull certain things off

#

and he's not that dumb in hindsight

#

just not particularly bright in some things, which afaik make sense with his asperger

full mountain
#

I don't know many -illionaires that haven't lied, cheated, and exploited to get the wealth they have, is all I'm saying

queen vale
#

I'd say he has people that pull these things off, he's just the faceman with ideas, and unfortunatly has literally bought a platform to make sure his ideas and voice are forced to the top of the pile no matter what

#

He strikes me as the kind of person that cannot accept a reasonable "no" or understand people

full mountain
queen vale
#

Unfortunatly technical intelligence doesn't equate social intelligence or economic intelligence

full mountain
#

I do not like Elon musk, is what I'm saying

#

I don't even thing the dude is technically intelligent

#

He's just a giant cry baby

small berry
#

I wouldn't categorize it as that

queen vale
#

I've met PHD doctors who don't understand the concept of keyboard shortcuts on a computer, finance directors who don't understand excel isn't a fucking database, and scientists who have given themselves food poisoning

small berry
#

Either his best friend that nobody knows is pulling these things off or Elon does have some brain for these things, even if not for most things

full mountain
queen vale
small berry
#

in different fields and companies

#

I think there's something in his brain I'd like to pick apart, honestly, I think there would be value there

livid cypress
#

hi

full mountain
queen vale
#

His successes are successes, but I can imagine he outputs a lot of ideas which are just quietly forgotten or put aside when he gets distracted with the next big shiny project - I've seen it in a lot of C-levels and executives who stick their fingets into every pie in a business to have "an impact"

small berry
queen vale
#

Their name is well known, but plenty of teams work around, not with, those kinds of peoples, playing the "Yes sir" game knowing that it'll not matter in a few months

full mountain
small berry
#

I know he's behaved like that, I know he is like that, but then there's SpaceX

queen vale
small berry
#

interesting

full mountain
#

Wasn't SpaceX already a thing when he bought it out, or was that something he made from the ground up?

small berry
#

he founded( found?) it, afaik

#

from the ground up

queen vale
#

Bear in mind with the money you can literally buy the knowledge and people to get the idea off the ground, and if you hype something up enough (tesla) people will buy into it, almost to a cultish level

full mountain
#

Well either way, all he did was make the company, hired on some actually smart peeps, and then used the last of his remaining charisma to get investors onto the company

queen vale
#

More "grounded" people (cynical people) will try to say "Well maybe this isn't a good idea" or point out flaws, which you as a hype man use to show how "The doubters" are trying to "suppress" the ideas, and how "we are right"

livid cypress
#

pls

#

help me

small berry
#

I see what you're saying, I think if he's such an egocentric and you're also saying he had to do stuff an egocentric isn't good at I think there's a disconnect

full mountain
livid cypress
#

i just downloaded palworld today

#

can u join and play with em ?

small berry
#

Paying for smart people to do what you want and being someone that can't identify actual good work cause it disagrees with what you want doesn't connect

queen vale
#

You can put on fake personalities for public show, a lot of people who have these tendencies have learned, and I've heard of people who coach c-levels and execs in exactly this kind of behavious

#

Just watch the people around him's reactions when something goes wrong

small berry
#

I think being as egocentric and dumb as Elon is I think he swallowed many pills he didn't want or like to swallow at SpaceX

#

I think there's some merits there as much as there are in the negatives

#

He's a mutlifacetic dumb and smart human

queen vale
#

I strongly suspect he had an entire team of people who's sole job was to spin the updates in a way he'd like them, and he likely didn't even know that was happening.

#

"Yes, the engine failed BUT WE GOT SO MUCH VALUABLE TELEMETRY AND LOOK AT THE SHINY LINES GOING UP"

small berry
#

that's what a CEO does

full mountain
#

Yea I highly doubt Elon has much to do with SpaceX nowadays other than to just own it.

#

Same with tesla

queen vale
#

A CEO leads the company, but should be able to know what's actually happening at a company, way, way to many are incredibly disconnected from the reality of the business

full mountain
#

Yea

queen vale
#

I'm not saying that a CEO should know the exact ins and outs of the ground level, but they should at least have an idea of how things are

I think you misunderstand, Musk was accusing the UK cops of Two-tier policing and racial profiling and such during our recent unrest, when it was a case of "Gee why arrest the people who aren't actually firebombing and stealing"

Those arrest numbers do be climbing tho

queen vale

There's not really any other appropriate word, "Unauthorised" would work but is as harsh, and there's plenty of places where some people are legal and illegal in literal terms, as in it's against the law for unauthorised people to be

It is indeed illegal

full mountain
#

I believe in open borders, which is where my disagreement comes from

humble parrot
#

Those are open borders

mystic blade
#

Works for Australia and New Zealand and most of the EU.

humble parrot
#

If they were closed, they wouldn't be able to even go through the procedures

queen vale
#

Open borders are nice in theory, but entirely impractical in practice sadly.

full mountain
#

I'm biased in that I am the son of immigrants and have seen how fucking stupid the system can be, so that's where I'm coming from

night plume
# full mountain I feel like it can easily be seen as racist, but whatever

It was the manner they worded it that made me not see it in that way. It made me see it as someone was causing an issue that was bringing them worry by ignoring the needs of the people and giving to select groups which would cause racism towards those groups by the people. But, bc of how they wrote it, I didn't see it as they themself being racist, just them stating the going ons, and had to re-read to find why there was talk of a racist topic bc I didn't see what they wrote as being looked into that deeply.

mystic blade
#

Also when people say "taking our jobs" I can only shake my head because they're not TAKING our jobs. Our bosses are taking advantage of them to pay them less and borderline torture them because they'll take it because they don't have a choice while we do.

From Venezuela to Germany, Portugal, Spain, USA

mystic blade

night plume
full mountain
#

The issue is how inconsistent it is

mystic blade
#

During the civil war in Syria my coworker, AMAZING dude who was a teacher over there. Knew his shit. Like REALLY well.

He was trying to get his family out and the H1 visa was helping and they literally kept holding it over his head as a threat. If he didn't dance just right they'd just toss him and his family back there.

queen vale
mystic blade

Also have a funny story regarding him and introducing him to sushi. Lets just say he didn't expect the type of spice heat wasabi gives.

mystic blade
full mountain
queen vale
mystic blade
#

I believe horseradish is a little more kicking, though

full mountain
#

Look, the immigration topic aside, I'll admit idk what's going on over in the UK

night plume
#

I believe anyone who wants to live in another country should go through the proper channels.

But, omg countries need to fix the dang process.... People do their damndest to come over and go over legally and expectations are ridiculous in some countries. If your citizens are not expected to live up to a fraction of that standard, I don't believe that should be part of the immigration requirement.

mystic blade
#

But yeah I told him to be careful with the wasabi. It has a real strong electric heat. He laughed and went over how he can handle it. He has spicy as heck food in Syria (Not joking either I'm pretty sure if he served me a meal I'd die). But then he took a FINGERFUL OF WASABI and put it on his tongue.

#

Lets just say wasabi heat is not the same as the spices he uses

full mountain
mystic blade

Also I got him addicted to salmon rolls

To be honest most places suck right now. Some more than others but overall I'd say it's miserable. Not violent. Violence is pretty way down compared to 100 years ago or so. But we're all miserable.

night plume
full mountain
#

Okay what is meant by "requiring to adapt" ?

queen vale
mystic blade
# full mountain Wha

This does happen, but not to the degree some think. It more has to do when you have people coming over and forming exclusive communities of people from their area like china towns, etc. Where you go there and it's basically the same as back where they came from.

That said this is a problem with individuals not the whole it just gets generalized.

queen vale
mystic blade
#

Like people who immigrated from Mexico where I was would speak spanish to purposefully insult people behind their backs knowing we couldn't understand them. But this is a more limited group than pepole think

full mountain
queen vale
#

I'd not go to Japan for example and insist on keeping my shoes on inside their house

mystic blade
#

Thankfully I had a coworker that spoke spanish so I knew when people were insulting me in retail in spanish

#

Which was too often

#

Just got used to hearing spanish and go "Great someone is being insulted"

mystic blade
#

The point being made I think though is if you go to a melting pot and refuse to melt and spread with it you just make it chunky.

#

And if you don't like chunky but are the chunk well...

#

But this is problems with individuals not the whole.

queen vale
#

Mmm... cultural chunkiness

fringe raptor

mystic blade

I feel like the issue is whether the culture is being forced on them to the point where they cannot express their own cultures into thier community

mystic blade

My grandmother still remembers ellis isle

mystic blade
#

That's what we mean by when you make the melting pot chunky

tranquil obsidian

it's about compatibility; if your culture requires you to be vegetarian, this doesn't contradict the local culture. however if your culture says beating children is acceptable, that is contradictory to the culture and should not be done

My middle eastern friend I got hooked on sushi looked for solutions for his problems. He wound up finding non alcoholic based soy sauce to get the full glory.

full mountain
#

Wait wtf, soy sauce is alcoholic?

mystic blade
#

Yes. There is some fermentation

queen vale
small berry
#

I think it's more of a technicism than it being alcoholic

mystic blade
#

So it does count as a nono if your religion says no alcohol for example, but he wanted the full experience badly enough he found soysauce that didn't have that downside

night plume

I think the only non integration story I have is people yelling at me for saying "ma'am/sir"

fringe raptor

I lived for sushi until I got a bad batch of it. Now I just can't stomach it

mystic blade

Yeah a bad batch can ruin you. What can also ruin you is escolar if you can't handle it.

#

Escolar is like 30% oil. if you're not prepped it can absolutely mimic food poisoning

fringe raptor

Snake mackerel

mystic blade

Also I try not to let it ruin it for me. Otherwise the bad prosciutto stick I got this morning would ruin prosciutto for me and I couldn't handle that mentally.

night plume

Now I want sushi....

#

I need to find a sushi buddy in my area 🤔

mystic blade

Actually lots of places won't serve Escolar because people keep mistaking it for food poisoning and railing against the restaurant

I have many food intolerances and allergies so yeah...kinda ruined it for me lol

Horseshoe crabs have a unique taste that is often described as sweet and briny, similar to lobster or shrimp123. The meaty texture is sometimes compared to that of blue crabs1. However, the flavor can vary depending on the cooking method and preparation134.

SPEEDERS

#

I LOVE SPEEDERS

pliant merlin
#

Crane flies are just annoying.
They also look as stupid as they look.

mystic blade
#

Depends on spider. Most are nearly blind and will attack in defense eagerly. Jumpers have INCREDIBLY good vision and won't bite unless really freaked out.

small berry
#

that makes it better I think

mystic blade
#

Their eyes act as telescopes. Particulary the front ones, and can actually look around in place to a degree. Other spiders mostly just see like...light.

night plume
mystic blade
#

But these guys can see your full size and go "wtf you big"

full mountain
hollow tree

My friend has a bunch of snakes and he always shows videos of him feeding them and stuff and I love em

mystic blade
#

Usually you can be chill around daddy long legs and the ones we call them. They're scavengers

night plume
#

They believe a jumping spider can recognize you

mystic blade
#

Jumpers I wouldn't be surprised can

#

If I recall they don't neccessarily have as many neurons but they have some...strange setup that allows parallel processing to make up for the lack of strenght of a single core as it were

night plume
hollow tree
#

Pet jellyfish

#

That’s what I wanna get

mystic blade
#

They also have a semi active breathing if I recall which is how they can jump like they do.

#

Whereas most bugs and spiders passively breathe through the skin

full mountain
hollow tree
#

I wanna do a fantasy jellyfish piece sometime when I actually have time

mystic blade
#

Like this one jumper DEFINITELY "got to know me". He was scared at first but over the days became more and more chill just being in the open around me. To the point he'd watch me whilke chilling on the monitor. That's when he started chasing the mouse cursor.

#

He got real confused he couldn't catch it

night plume
queen vale
#

Just put a plastic bag into a bowl, instant low maintainance jellyfish

mystic blade
#

I can understand difficult. You're taking care of a bundle of neurons that floats around and stings things and just kinda bumps into everything. I'm pretty sure half the problem is making sure they don't tangle to death

Also apparently those types of daddy long legs and related ones aren't actually spiders in the sense we know

#

They're an arachnid, but removed from the normal family closer to things like mites and scorpions

pliant merlin
#

A brain dead patient would be more self aware than a jellyfish.

mystic blade
#

The reason you also see them bundled into huge groups that panic when you poke them is because they huddle for warmth

hollow tree

#

Scooter blennys are adorable

mystic blade

But yeah according to this there are 1,800 species of daddy long legs with different appearances but roughly the same M.O.

pliant merlin
#

I have none. Anything that is a fish or is a modified derivative of one.

Fish are best

Daddy long legs can't really bite so their threat response is to flail around and vibrate.

mystic blade

night plume
#

Omg that is adorable

#

I am having trouble finding a pic. But I am used to more round than your pic, so I will go with close enough on your pic xD

mystic blade
#

Yeah it's definitely just another species

#

There's a lot more daddy long legs variants than you'd think

#

But we collectively just call them all daddy longlegs

#

The order, though, is Opiliones

#

This is how daddy long legs respond to a threat

#

They just vibrate really really fast

pliant merlin
#

They are still insects that I won't mind stomping on.

mystic blade
#

The idea we think is that the vibrating makes them harder to see for a lot of predators

#

So they just...vibrate

night plume
#

I put them outside so my cats don't eat them

mystic blade
#

I just imagine that video with an overlay audio of screaming in panic

#

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

vibrates

humble parrot
mystic blade
#

XD

#

Yeah my cat would do that ifn it saw one of them doing that

#

Now if you don't like other spiders you'll like some of the daddy long leg family

#

The Pholcidae will actually eat things like house spiders, huntsman, and funnel weavers by netting them from afar or sneaking onto the web and acting like caught prey

hollow tree
#

Turns out I am not a lion or tiger or anything fancy, I am in fact a daddy long legs

mystic blade
#

Two more spider facts

#

The first is their organs and stomach is in the butt.

#

So their butts grow big when they eat

#

The second is spiders are hydraulic. They use blood pressure to move which is why they move so smoothliy compared to most other critters.

#

That's why they curl when they die. The hydraulic pressure goes down to 0.

#

Also in mythbusters Adam actually got one of the daddy long legs family that COULD bite to bite him. Research since then has shown their venom isn't even that good against insects.

#

There was actually an orb weaver that lived outside my house for awhile. Made a GIGANTIC web and caught SO MANY BUGS going after my lamps.

It's butt was gigantic. That spider was eatin good.

THankfully as an orb weaver it cleaned up after itself. They eat the web when they're done. leaving only the 3 anchor lines.

#

By gigantic I'm talking the web was like 3-4 feet.

#

That spider did some work

#

Orb weavers make real big webs. But eat them when done like said, and are also very...round looking.

teal iron
#

What is this the animal channel

mystic blade
#

Very ROTUND

mystic blade
full mountain
mystic blade
#

Also a random fact is they tried giving things like drugs to spiders once. Turns out that are indeed affected by them. Ones that were given cocaine made very messy webs very VERY fast.

teal iron
#

Off topic more like peak

full mountain
#

Hell yea, dad

mystic blade
#

Animals are based because they don't care to worry aobut most of what we do :V

night plume
#

I was cleaning the backroom of my house. This room is an addition and isn't well sealed, so spiders get in easily. While moving a table, there was a terrifying looking spider and she was scared of me and reared up at me. I popped her into a cup, covered it, snapped a pic, threw her outside.

Sent the pic to someone to figure out what she was and he sent back what she was. (I would have to go through a lot of convo to find it).
Looked her up: she eats venomous spiders and millipedes. Her favorite meal being brown recluse. I went outside and started calling for her like you would a dog xD she was long gone.

mystic blade
#

Aw you lost your guard spider.

#

They'll be back

#

Another bug I like around here. Eastern Carpenter Bees. They're so CHILL and so very stupid.

#

They're aboutr the size of your thumb and live in groups of 15 or so in holes in wood.

#

Very non aggressive. The males actually have headbutting battles for territory.

#

Sounds like plastic cups hitting eachother.

night plume
#

They fly into you a lot xD

mystic blade
#

THEY HAVE NO SPACIAL AWARENESS I SWEAR.

#

They just BONK everything

#

Is it attacking you? No it's just too stupid to have depth preception.

#

You can tell the males because they have white splotches on their face where they headbutt for territory. Unlike most hives the queen does most of the gathering and work for their collectives.

#

They're just so CLUMSY. But they're considered an annoyance because they eat so many holes in wood to make their hotel and that wood often includes the side of a house.

#

A male one claimed my porch. EVENTUALLY he stopped getting close and owuld just hover about, see I was there, and fly off to check the next spot for males to headbutt,.

Which is why I like huge beetles too.

mystic blade

Especially because the huge beetles only have one defense. "Yeet"

small berry

well, in fact, the bee didn't even sting me when it got stuck in my hair, I think I stung myself when trying to clear my head from whatever it had

My worst nightmare was a real time dream that felt like a full 6 hours or more and I was trying to work at an airport and bring in an old WW2 fighter for a test flight post repairs and it kept getting delayed and delayed and I had to keep jumping customer service to the managers and then when I finally got clearance to bring it in a truck hit the trailer.

#

Again let me re-iterate it was in REAL TIME. I woke up feeling like I'd done an 8 hour work shift and I just called out to go back to sleep.

night plume

I would have cried myself back to sleep....

mystic blade

full terrace
mystic blade

It was...I would've LOVED a nonsensical monster. Instead I had a full 8 hours of nothing but worst case scenario

#

In a real life scenario

#

The last "fun" nightmare I had that was terrifying involved pirates but that was over 25 years ago.

#

After that it was all about school or work or layoffs or that one

night plume
#

The monster in mine wasn't nonsensical to me, I was sick for at least a month that I can remember from that nightmare.

mystic blade
#

But the worst part of that nightmare was the fact it felt real time.

I was already stressed so dreaming a realtime 8 hour scenario was just too much for that entire week

Anyways, customer wanted their crawfish double, paper bagged. The entirety of this nightmare is me trying to get this giant plastic bag of crawfish into the paper bags.
I woke up leaning off my bed trying to get a pillow in a pillowcase. I woke up bc my arms were exhausted.

#

if your intentionally flawed and dumb design has an expected lifetime and it's at best one year more than what you get with warranty, how is that just okay

That’s consumerism for you. Used to be that things were built to last, you still get more mileage out of older fridges if they’re maintained right. I got a few years out of my iPhone 5 before Apple decided to make it obsolete. Older consoles like the original Xbox and plays station are also examples. Newer generation consoles have built in obsolescence- ps3 and Xbox 360 being the most recent to be removed. Online all the time. Not as much of a blessing as people thought.

My NES and SNES still run strong.
My PS4.... that thing heard lightning outside and wiped itself. (exaggeration of what happened to make it funny)

small berry
#

if we don't stop this flawed designs and built in obscolescence, flawed materials, we'll end up subscribing to every single physical item cause we can't trust the products with functioning for X amount of time

#

Companies will tell us, well, if you subscribe to us we'll replace your fridge !

#

so we won't own fridges anymore

#

Warranties essentially define how long your item will last and that's fucked up

"technological doping" whatafak

teal iron
#

So ultimately we need to take away companies' rights to build intentionally crappy technology

small berry
#

I'm not particularly a fan of vague wording, but one of those "due diligence" things when developing a product is something I'd be willing to deal with if I was making my own product

rapid marsh
small berry
#

The issue isn't the money, the problem is the power given to that money to influence the company and product

full mountain
teal iron
#

Like obviously all technology is doomed to eventually fail and become obsolete but if a company is intentionally shortening the lifespan with subpar engineering then that should be a fine
An extremely large fine
A fine that makes it counterproductive to do
A fine that does not become "the cost of doing business"

rapid marsh
small berry
#

the stock market should be a fair thing, companies shouldn't be trying to play it, that's the issue

teal iron
#

Engaging in anti consumer behavior to attain higher stock value?
Make that a multi billion dollar fine as well

rapid marsh
#

Apple- used to be quality products, now the life time of said product is dependant on how long Apple decide to support that product with updates.

#

Add in the stupid amount CEOs take home per year in those companies, with “performance bonuses” and you get a lovely cycle of fun and games

small berry
#

We kinda need to reevaluate corporativism at a fundamental level, the issue with Apple is the issue with anything being alive for that long will inevitable force any being, like a corporation, start to fear for its own survival, it will do whatever it takes to remain alive

rapid marsh
#

Well, considering how buggered up the housing market is in Australia and America, they’re going to be struggling pretty hard to survive when people don’t have the spare change for it.

Corporations should be created with a set purpose, expected marketcap and users, it isn't practical to have corporations that will constantly morph and absorb each other to survive

megacorporations are a bad thing imho

there's so many small changes that should be made to improve things, the list is huge

I understand revolutions are bad, but when the list of to do things reaches a thousand, I think it ain't so crazy

#

You're a company that sells products in various different industries, is omnipresent in peoples lives, time to break it apart, welcome to Google being fractioned in a dozen new companies

teal iron
#

See the thing is, google being one semi cohesive company is arguably beneficial to society

small berry
#

Steam? Nuh uh, you're either Valve or Steam

teal iron
#

But when Google is a single entity whose sole obligation is to profit, not to society, it becomes a problem

small berry
#

Its sole obligation is profit and expansion, cause we have 0 boundaries for companies

teal iron
#

I think mega corporations should have their private ownership stripped

#

All the assets, none of the unaccountability

small berry
#

How is Valve even legal

#

they sell videogames and own the biggest game distribution platform in the world

teal iron
#

They sell like 3 video games ever

small berry
#

Cause they don't need more, they get all the visibility, all the money

teal iron
#

Well
They made 3 video games ever

small berry
#

they basically created the steam marketplace to fit their games

teal iron
#

Tbh I don't particularly have a problem with valve as they've only gone up in providing value to their consumers

#

As opposed to say apple who have consistently screwed over customers for profit

small berry
#

what's the most bought and sold item in the marketplace? whoops, an item from a Valve game

teal iron
#

Granted valve should be regulated for when the intelligent and competent management turns over and is replaced by corpo zombies

small berry
#

I'd like to see what rules are they using for their games when it comes to visibility, are games from other companies using the same framework?

#

are valve games instantly pushed to the top?

teal iron
#

But as things currently stand valve is the reason I don't specifically support splitting mega corps
If I had to make a new account and install a new app and deal with a new UI every 4 games I play I would lose it

small berry
#

Steam should be Steam

#

Youtube should be Youtube

#

distribution platforms simply cannot be owned by people that also participate in that platform

#

we can't act like they will compete fairly, they just wont

#

example, Amazon, jesus christ

#

imagine youtube was owned by Joe Rogan, everything we'd see would be Joe rogan

#

everytime a Forum or distribution platform, however you wanna call it, changes hands, we suffer

You could be buying a product from a company today and tomorrow that company could be making a whole different thing and stop supporting your purchase

Same goes for some of the older PC titles I’ve got on my laptop too. Mostly RTS games.
