Ships go on sea trials for testing and bring on maintenance crew and engineers to be sure everything runs smoothly. There are also testing specialists and other specialists on board.

Sometimes, when mew equipment is installed, a specialist for that equipment will be on board to teach crew to use it during some sort of trial.

Depending on where your maintenance guy works, he could be hired on as a temp to make sure some equipment on a ship remains working. Could be a sea trial, could be he was hired on bc he once worked on some of the new machinery that was just installed and a guy said he would be cheaper than a specialist from the company who has never gotten his hands dirty.
