So, yesterday. Water treatment reached out to us about replacing one of the pipes that discharges into an oxidation tank. They wanted a butterfly valve installed at the top of the tank. Now, our job is to shrug our shoulders and give them what they want, because it is their equipment after all. We installed this new line yesterday.

Now... A few issues

  • The valve in question is indeed at the top of the tank, but the clearance between the flanges and the top of the tank don't allow much room for the valve handle to turn

  • It is at the top of the tank, and the only way to access it is via manlift. Getting a manlift back there is a big PITA.

  • It is intended to "keep solution water out of the line" but all it's really going to do is fill that line and pressurize, potentially causing further issues

Sometimes I wonder what goes through the heads of some of these supervisors. All of it could be eliminated if the valve was at the bottom.

Ironically the only way it could be "cheaper" is if the valve were on the bottom tbh. It's just a stainless steel pipe welded together with a butterfly valve at the end. It would actually be way more expensive to improve upon it.

Making it actuator-activated would require a lot of time and routing of oxygen/electrical lines depending on how they wanted to do it
