Lyrics:
The velocity of time turns her voice into sugar water
I'm on a concrete way
The wind is blowing to the north-northwest
It smells like sands of the southern island
When a black cat crosses my path
A woman...
no but why is it kinda addicting
EXACTLY YOU GET IT

This is amazing i think unironically Gaspare Noè was inspired by this to make Vortex
have you heard juusankai wa gekkou? probably their most famous post 00s album
i saw them live in 2014!! was a good concert, they played aku no hana and moonlight
OMG that's sick!!!!
yeahh I have, really love muma the nightmare from that one but not super into the rest of it (yet) sadly
lately I really love their very first few albums their sound was so cool there
up to/incl taboo (and romanesque ep)
but I used to be more into kurutta taiyou, sexy stream liner, nd mona lisa overdrive
we'll see where my taste goes ig !! need to listen to the rest more anyway hahah
it was at their year end budokan show, was part of the tour for their arui wa anarchy album which i also like a lot
this is my favourite song of theirs
https://open.spotify.com/track/3IW7RM4ltMxDzJsX2X6kkh?si=2UoAvTEdTwWxoJ_aLD1Bnw
i tend to see their discography as having 3 eras: early years (86-92), industrial/cyberpunk (93-04) and recent (05+) but i guess 2005 isn't very recent anymore lol

@crisp condor lmao look at this madness
(top is faye wong she is unbothered for now i think but yaeji SHOT up to #2 in a matter of weeks ...)
as she SHOULD
ahhh man you're making me wish I had tracked my plays for this! (also based bjork/faye combo) (reminds me I got my sis to send me her taylor recs and I wanted your opinions since u recommended her to *me before)...
maybe this will sound silly but I think the fact 'be alone in this' ends in a sort of melancholy way pushes me to loop the album...bc u just want to return to the comfort of submerge fm & re-live it all......does that make sense or is it just me being insane
the taylor plays there are high mostly because of midnights which a lot of her fans hate but i thought it was really good also good chess music
i don't think that's silly ... i often loop albums for different reasons
listened to one of my fav mixes on the way to work and it's still stuck in my head, thru all the music I have listened to tonight (specifically the pj harvey/tricky track)

a lot of the best girl groups/acts were older like wonder girls, boa, f(x)
also some from this gen i like a lot but aren't quite as big on the charts are yukika, chung ha, yerin baek
that's what i would recommend for now i can be more specific if you want
i love some of newjeans songs, i js havent gotten into them much !!
i will def check them out :]
ive tried getting into older groups but i dont like them very much sadly :[
i also do love chung ha tho
oh that's a shame i love that stuff
i listen to full albums a lot and there aren't a lot of kpop albums that are really, really top-tier (mostly it's minis)
but wonder girls and f(x) have that
i will maybe look at them
my fav gg was exid
i love exid
haven't tried them much i will ,,
for a sec I thought that was the CC/Robert Smith track. still hits tho

Bless up! I’m going to see how much this matches my 2012 playlists
this was so different to how I had expected it to sound, but so beautiful - haunting/glitchy/enveloping
has a strangely..optimistic is the wrong word..buoyant? quality to it for a song with such a dark theme
keep replaying it, weirdly addictive

this is so wild ... i woke up in the middle of the night just now and a bunch of random thoughts went through my head ... i thought "i need to get back to han about nurture" then for some reason also thought "maybe i should also show her the age of adz ... maybe another time" ... this is so ⁉️ but glad you liked it ...
I’m so sorry,, my psychic desire for music recs was too strong…
(Hope u got some sleep also! Would love Nurture thoughts when you have time & had planned to listen to the whole Sufjan album tonight, as it happens
- piqued my interest)
do not be sorry for having taste 😌
we will see how today goes
curious what you would think of the age of adz because it's long and has somewhat cryptic lyrics and isn't your normal electronic fare but more like artsy glitch-pop ... think u may like it
extremely encouraged by your description
have a long (but not particularly active) day at work tonight so lots of time to mull it over, will report back
PORTER [feel free to ignore] I have a load of track-by-track notes in my server (which are very disorganised & won't spam you with those) but I'll give you the brief collated first impressions:
👀 as if i'd pass up a chance to write an essay
- More melancholy than I expected! I think I had it in mind as a very bright, springtime, optimistic album & indeed it delivers on that front - in parts. However, I was left feeling somewhat sad at points. I'm still nailing down why, exactly; I think partly some of the lyrics inspire a little uncomfortable reflection, but there are also moments where it feels sort of...painfully nostalgic? still thinking about this, will return to it
true ... it is bittersweet i think and the idea is meant to be cathartic ... it does begin and end with a very uplifting song ... also note some tracks sound kind of sad but lyrically aren't (like sweet time which is about how happy he is he met his wife and mother which is about how much he appreciates his parents) ... "emotional" is better than "sad" i think ...
- fave tracks I think are some of the more instrumental ones (dullscythe really hit, but am generally really into glitchy music), didn't expect the piano on wind tempos at all but it's absolutely gorgeous
this was surprising because almost no one likes dullscythe at first lmao and wind tempos is so repetitive but it is pretty ... as i explained i think dullscythe is meant to be a musical representation of what frustration feels like and struggling with perfectionalso a very ocd thingand then having a breakthrough ... side note in a reddit thread on dullscythe and what it's about someone wrote "yall need to listen to aphex twin lmfao" hancore moment
wind tempos is really pretty and the repetitiveness is soothing ... i like the backstory of how he wrote it after meeting this japanese composer who is basically his hero
- I have the words 'wii snorkelling' in my notes not sure what that meant..will relisten...I think it might have been for Get Your Wish (which I rly liked btw)
LMAO i want to know what this means 🤿 anyway yes get your wish rules ... one of my favourite lines on the album don't you waste the suffering you faced / it will serve you in due time so true i told you before i love that concept
- the lyn collins sample in 'musician' tickled me
i don't know who that is ngl but i'm glad
- used the word 'yearning' in notes a lot, not sure if that makes sense though - album is striving like a seedling towards the light
TRUE this is simply so accurate your mind is so powerful
(will spare you from long lyrical analyses lol but there are a few relating to ocd, particularly for 'something comforting')
bold to assume i don't want to read those 👀
something comforting also has one of the most mental-illness-coded lyrics oh there must be / something wrong with meshoutout to anyone who's ever felt Damaged and "unfixable"
contrasting this album with yaeji’s: porter’s is softer, gentler, optimistic, mournful at times, yearning, emotionally open
yaeji’s feels almost more frank, studious, ‘working-through’ - lots on this in notes but reminds me SO much of a journal. it’s optimistic but in a different way (need to come back to this too, tho). it's interesting to me how different they are
this is also simply so true and factual ... it's less ... methodical? i guess (which is interesting because of his extreme perfectionism but there were some songs where he made himself say "fuck it, it's a banger" and not try too hard about following his own rules, one was musician)
i meant to say beforehand too that one key thing it has in common with yaeji is that she goes back and forth between english and korean for things she found easier to express in korean and this is a lot like why porter has these heavy vocal effects which he used for things he found were hard to sing out loud but it was easier if his voice was different ... i find this neat
this is a genuine gift, thank u so much for the detailed thoughts!!
got to go to doctor but will let this percolate
& respond later… head full many thoughts

I got to catch the last bit of Yaeji's Coachella set, just a bit of Raingurl and Done

I didn’t catch any of coachella this year but @maiden sable sent me the most blessed video of underworld shouting out Yung Lean

It’s funny, I was just listening to Underworld earlier today - was too shy to answer the qotd because I have bad taste in films, but nearly brought up ‘films with good soundtracks’ which ofc includes Trainspotting
V dark but great music (and ofc underworld make a famous appearance)
Trainspotting is on my list of favs
Saving this for later also! Thank u for the link - hope you had a fab time! Sounds like you did
Born Slippy being my favourite Underworld song too
It's how I learned of them, as probably most people

also great music, same sort of feel
YES I HAVE
like a few days ago I wrote this near-thesis about dubstep origins lol and I nearly wrote a HUGE amount abt jungle with a ref to human traffic
any jungle in guy?
The film itself is kind of bleak lol but I cannot deny the soundtrack is so on point
I have it listed as one of my top favourites, just love the feel of it
Idk what nationality you are but it’s SO British too lol
I'm Canadian
Really nailed the culture
Oh we are a fan of Canadians here u will be right at home
they've been supposedly working on a sequel for a while, not sure what the progress is at for it now
I wonder if this would be a good film to stream…maybe not with all the drug themes lol but the soundtrack is fun. I don’t know that they could recapture the magic of the OG with a sequel! But I’m curious to see where it goes
this is a couple years old but I had made a list of movies with great soundtracks once for a Letterboxd showdown thing, they do these every couple weeks where people make lists and then they average them out to pick the final list https://letterboxd.com/starshadowx2/list/pitch-perfect-showdown-best-soundtracks/

Underworld - Born Slippy - with Yung Lean at Coachella
I like how Lean almost looks like Renton from Trainspotting. Ewan McGregor would have been an awesome cameo as well.
Friday: I saw Yimbo > Domi & JD Beck > a bit of Dombresky and Malaa > was going to see Magdalena Bay but the line was crazy long > Gorillaz > The Chemical Brothers
Saturday: started at the Despacio tent > Charli XCX > Sofi Tukker > last bit of Yaeji > Underworld > Eric Prydz > Calvin Harris. I missed Tale of Us but I saw their livestream the weekend before.
Sunday: Porter Robinson > Christine and the Queens > Bjork > Blink-182 > Skrillex x Fred again.. x Four Tet, also known as PHM or TBA.
there were some others I caught at the Do LaB tent but I don't remember the names except The Brothers Macklovitch
my phone died during Bjork so I didn't get any videos of Blink or PHM, but for PHM I was right beside them, almost front middle
i watched the chemical brothers stream, the brothers worked it out as expected
Yeah theirs was amazing
you missed out not going to bad bunny
not my kind of music, he did show up for Gorillaz though
i was only a decent fan of bad bunny before that set, it has me believing the hype now
the funniest part is when he started gaslighting his fans and then talking about parasocial relationships and inviting them to his house \
Chemical Brothers and him were at the same time
also the whole segment dedicated to multiple genres of latin music through the decades
it's cool he was there, definitely a good headliner
he went on for like 2 hours you couldve caught the end
he is like the sole reason i wouldve gone having seen the set
same for grupo firme last year
that's me with Underworld
they were bringing the party, they were chugging beers out of their cowboy hats
Sunday sounds amazing I’m so envious!!
Fred again not so keen lol but four tet/bjork/Christine…also just getting into porter
the trio of them were so good, they basically saved the weekend
just three dudes throwing a party
han if you start getting into porter youre gonna have to start dressing like youre going to an anime con
Bold of you to assume I don’t already do that
I was standing right behind the photographer here basically
I have a purple leopard print skirt somewhere I’m not above it
you dress like youre going to make witches brew most days ive seen ur posts!
(Unsure if compliment but flattered and tbh not incorrect)
its a compliment dw
Christine was really good, I was close up to the front for her too. I hadn't heard of her before until the W1 livestreams and loved it so I made it a must-see for W2. Porter was also amazing as always. I've seen him once as Virtual Self but this was my first time for a real Porter show.
I think Christine is now Redcar (?) and uses he/him pronouns if I’m not mistaken
Rly like some of the tunes released under Christine and the queens, haven’t heard a lot admittedly
ive never interacted with a christine in queens fan i dont think ever
sometimes i wonder if theyre real
Bjork had to pause for a bit and cough/get more water because it was so dry. She kept apologising and the crowd was just cheering.
I missed the drone show because I was too close to the stage
I'm one now
theyve been around for like a decade i just wonder how sometimes are they not american?
they're French
ahhhh okay that explains everything

i forgot blink 182 was there, i watched some of that, tom delonge was doing every song like he was making fun of it
they were supposed to only be the secret Friday guest on W1 at Sahara, but because of the Frank Ocean fiasco they got moved up to headline W2 main stage
yeah i watched the frank ocean disaster on a stream
it wasnt as awful as people have acted like, it was just clearly a mess and he kinda barely did anything
Same, it was fun to see it all happen. I was happy he dropped out and it gave us the much better W2.
it was pretty awful, plus he lied about it
he screwed over a lot of other people too
i mean the hater i am, im glad to see peoples blind worship for the guy diminish in any way
him lying about his broke foot as a reason he cant stand on a stage is so pathetic lmao
it's crazy becoming known as the worst Coachella headliner after not performing for so long, like he would have been better off cancelling
definitely one of my favorite pink floyd tracks. incredible synths too

embarrassingly had a rave phase around 13 (didn’t we all) (don’t say no I will feel bad) and didn’t actually grok what the chorus meant for quite some time
what does a rave phase entail
dressing like this presumably
everyone should be in a rave phase all the time
Fortunately not TOO much in the way of embarrassing fashion decisions tho I did have some cargo pants and a tie-dye shirt as discussed in the fashion thread…was mostly eclipsed by the goth phase tbh
More into classic rave tunes! I got into the Prodigy when invaders must die was released & went thru their older stuff (still hits tbh), started listening to more stuff like hardcore/electronica
pragha khan, the shaman, Candi station, bizarre inc kind of stuff
at that age me and my brother had a kinda cringe phase of being into electronic music and the idea of things like going to raves and taking drugs being super edgy and cool because we were too young to do such things
i think this counts
what i'm saying is we didn't not have a rave phase
thank u I feel validated by this
is that from spaced hahah
i had a very cringe phase when i was about 14 where i wore colourful shirts and baggy jeans but that too got subsumed into a longer-lasting goth phase
yeah lol
every time i see a clip from spaced i wish i was 10 years older so i could appreciate the 90s while they were happening
I also had this
wanted those fluffy legwarmers so bad
YES (they’re kind of ‘in’ now albeit not so much the fluffy ones..I have been tempted but it may be past my time…)
omg i wanted a full rave outfit so bad
does while coding work..

count not work
shit my brain is fried alrd n exams havent eben satrted
yes it counts ... take my energy ... manifesting ...
thank u vayyiqra i feel better energy 💜

ok,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, hear me out ......... i'm not a big fan of this album (speak now) it's too guitar-strummy folk-pop singer-songwritercore for me BUT this vinyl reissue DOES go hard
@glass lintel !
i bet you only like it because it's purple and sparky and hana-core aesthetic Yes.
good vibes (cc @crisp condor) https://open.spotify.com/track/7FVvHGA46aU7mkwx4iHMRE?si=u93Hac5sQl2zbsCeKj9sNg
!!!!! It’s so funny that you sent this to me bc I bought it recently-ish, been listening to it on my long runs. Such a great track, pure relaxation
Funny that this came up on the same day as halcyon on and on, too, think I have them in the same (very long) playlist somewhere
fluffy ourple clouds
they're both songs i have on a playlist too which is songs i found from hana's streams 😌

I don’t want to love you
I just want the love you have
I don’t need to see you
I’ll just keep the space you held
I forget myself,
Forget you too

To make me feel the way I do?

that's me
https://samgoku.bandcamp.com/album/things-we-see-when-we-look-closer such a pretty ambient/experimentally electronic album
I have spent the last hour at work making a spreadsheet of my music recs oops brain needed low-stakes organisational task to do...v satisfied but so much to listen to

moistbreezy has been getting some hype lately on the internet, she just dropped a new album and makes y2k-era inspired trance-ish music
this is her first album, i like this and her new one as well quite a bit
also love her aesthetics they're very hana-esque
this is like a painting from the silmarillion haha it rules
feel like @crisp condor might like her 👀 our expert on 90s electronica
whenever i have an angry day i put old school dir en grey on and it's like i'm 15 again

also when i have chores to do which is more common these days
RAGE AT THE DISHES AND LAUNDRY
rage against the washing machine
adult moment
adulting like a boss!! (i struggle with simple tasks)
grimescord meetup at the yaeji kiosk in NYC come thru
this is a high acclaim indeed and not sure it’s one I can meet BUT! this sounds right up my street so I will def listen! thank u so much
adding to my fancy new spreadsheet
also rly into the aesthetic, nice homage to the whole 90s new age/transcendental thing but with a new cyber spin
I am in Need
Ty for the music rec Han
Let me know what you think!! I was just thinking of you yesterday bc I was listening to Ardour
yes it's the 90s "uplifting" trance thing and a bit new age-y (complimentary)
i wish to be like the girl in nyc holding bubble tea and picking up a yaeji vinyl ...that is where mentally i am rn
god. i am not asking for much rn.
have been feeling an urge to go to new york soon and see japanese breakfast and ichiko aoba in the fall (first one i was going to see last year but it was cancelled TWICE evil and the other was sold out)
this is a bonkers impractical idea but o i am tempted
I'm not going to say anything except 'do it' bc I think it sounds like great fun & something to look forward to
it would cost a lot of money and i need to get my passport renewed ...
i could technically afford it but it is a Lot ...
🤞 I hope u can make it (tho I'm sure there will be no shortage of great concerts in future if not)
the passport thing is the biggest thing holding me back i fear ... that's been taking months lately ... quite a backlog
likewise over here, I had to go to Glasgow for an 'emergency' renewal to ensure it would be ready for summer 🙃 so I totally get it, it's a huge faff! hopefully something u can sort out relatively smoothly
also the new photo....let's not discuss.... 🥴
this is how much i love ichiko ... these are my top artists for 2022 ... before october 20th last year i had hardly listened to her before
cancelled twice...third time lucky..........
this is another maybe irrational fear of mine ... what if i get there and the show is cancelled AGAIN
I mean it's not that irrational if it happened before
but! you did say there would also be a japanese breakfast concert so maybe it wouldn't be a wasted trip...
(sorry I am clearly intent on enabling Little Treats so take this with a grain of salt if it's legit unfeasible)
there is so much music i wanna discover but i also have an irrational dislike of listening to new songs
unstoppable force meets unmovable object
the problem is that it is feasible it's just very
< me manifesting it
also jbrekkie being cancelled twice was a big fluke, the first time was because someone got exposed to covid, the second time was because someone unexpectedly died
holy shit
yeah one of her closest friends died the day before it
ik u said 'irrational' but is there any reason u can identify? maybe if u just set 10 mins for it or something so it would feel less overwhelming...?
how horrible ;-; can't blame her at all for cancelling but what an unfortunate set of circumstances. and HANA too!! (re: cancellation)

sheer evil
omg holy water
i now have a bunch of albums i wanna listen to put on a list. and i try to listen to some while i do other stuff.
today i listened to these:
sophie and janelle albums are rly good nice picks
both of those twigs projects are amazing 🥰 any faves from there? dirty computer is on my 'relisten' list as well
the short film that goes with melissa is also fab, watched sooo many times
i love ache from ep1, and i'm your doll from m3ll
but i honestly love them all, especially her glitchy sounds
i haven't seen any of the music vids
i know i should just haven't gotten round to that 😳
take ya time! if u do have a spare moment, though, the melissa one is amazing - ties the whole EP thesis together beautifully. plus ofc incredible dancing (glass and patron is vogue-themed and utterly addictive)
interesting ... wish the EP didn't have a vaguely-horrifying cover
if you watch the video, no cover involved
(this is a twigs evangelist account)
me and twigs have a complicated history i fear
i love magdalene, it's the album that got me into twigs
may I ask why?
!!! GREAT taste! which are your faves? I still come back to it, it's so carefully crafted
mary magdalene is def my fav. i absolutely love the part toward the end where it becomes super glitchy
could not agree more
i also like home with you
i don't really like daybed tho sorry
which is a shame bc I normally love OPN! but something about how sing-songy it is means I don't come back to it often
my recent obsession is ethel cain and the knife
i like the idea of liking daybed ...
liking holy terrain is based lol idc
anyway twigs is very ... i See The Vision and want to like her a lot but in practice she doesn't always hit for me
some of her stuff i love and some of it i don't vibe with at all
also sometimes her aesthetics are really horrible to me (but sometimes also beautiful)
so i'm left feeling mixed ... in theory i love her
i think we all know mother cain here so i can really recommend this album
i used to listen to that one all the time it rules
this is spooky bc I just added this to my 'to listen' spreadsheet yday (and it was recommended by @gritty dragon , full circle)...will have to bump it up the list
i use lastfm to log music and rateyourmusic to find it mostly
this is valid!! this is kind of how I feel with caroline polachek, minus the aesthetic thing...some of her stuff really hits, but other bits (a lot of Pang) just goes over my head
can I ask ur faves (nw if not)
wait have i ranted about caroline before because this is exactly how i feel about her ...
SO polarising I'm glad u feel me
love Billions a lot
she has some songs i love, and some that piss me off lmao i fear billions is one of the latter
few are saying that ocean of tears is her best song i do not understand this
no you didn't it's a highly acclaimed song many are saying billions is great
but i don't like it (my issue with a lot of caroline songs is her lyrics sometimes they come across to me as incredibly pretentious)
hmmm that's fair, I don't think I really grasped any meaning in billions...she is truly just saying shit
psycho, priceless, good in a crisis ?
it's just the Vibe
YES that's it that kind of line i don't like it
it feels like she wants you to just somehow Get what she means and if you don't you're an idiot (this is a very rational thing to believe i know 🤪 but i can't get over that vibe ...)
btw, any albums/artists i REALLY should add to my listen list 👀
overall listening to her is frustrating, it feels like "off-brand hana"
what genre?
I guess I sort of see it as similar to how Grimes uses echolalia, it's just words that fit the vibe (also I am fairly settled in the state of idiocy so that probably helps)
+1 on what genre, or any artists you'd like recs to be similar to?
anything! trying to expand my taste
preferably not metal tho, ouchie ears
but anything else goes
it's because i'm okay with lyrics that don't mean anything and are abstract but with her i get this vibe like she wants you to think her lyrics are Deep but they're not ... and like i said i know it's irrational ...
well that's good ... anyway listen to björk - homogenic it's very foundational for a lot of electronic and pop music
also it rules
regina spektor - soviet kitsch really gorgeous album, jazz-inspired female vocalist w/ incredible piano. 'offbeat' vocal quirks and interesting album themes
anniemal - annie - norwegian alt-pop album very dear to my heart, a lil disco inspired, very fun and refreshing and free
balam acab - see birds - witch house/ambient-ish? electronic EP. spooky, emotive, a bit psychedelic
untold - glare - 2 track EP, electronic/ambient/dubstep, very atmospheric and floaty, bassy
@noble thorn
anniemal is rly fun
thank you so much!!
you're so welcome! lmk what u think whenever u get around to it (no pressure, and also no worried if u hate it haha)
okie will do!
was writing abt this for my lil spreadsheet yday/reflecting on it, might have been one of my first ever albums haha (some Lore there)
she's so underrated
don't stop is almost as good but it has a couple of meh tracks ... i will argue ...
did you like her album from 2020 or whenever that was
i didn't much 😔
||I also didn’t ;-; I really tried!! Was so hyped for her return but it felt a bit ‘flat’, even tho (iirc?) she connected with the same producer as before or something like that? Would need to look it up. Sad either way||
‘I don’t like your band’ is my guilty pleasure lmfao it’s cringe but so good
listening to ‘buy yourself a sequencer’ hits different in the lab

did u make this bc I feel called out by a certain bottom right corner
makes me want to listen to Michigan and seven swans
i saw this a couple of years ago prolly but stumbled upon it and 👀
meanwhile i think i am either seven swans or michigan ... more michigan idk ... seven swans is a vibe tho
also lmao one of these being one of his christmas albums part of the Lore is he loves christmas
good for him tbh I am a known Christmas hater but I love that it brings people joy
you are very ‘body of water’ coded
😯
How does one express that without sounding insane lol
i get the vibe and i am Into It dw
I told bits she was Yoshi coded the other day sorry to everyone for this
normalize telling your friends they are [whatever]-coded as a compliment
damn I lost my good wave emote but that one is purple so it fits
maybe it's a .... synthwave
(This was very good I laughed a lot)
Classico
is it too late to reply to this
i like balam acab, he follows me on twitter lol
anyway there is a world behind this world a world where everything is made of light and faeries cry softly in a forgotten reverie https://open.spotify.com/track/4Ig4lqvambqo9NPYoDklJe?si=MSrswIVHTTWq7e3Za8oRUw
WHAT!!! famous
he's had a rough time in the 10+ years since witch house stopped being relevant, all the music press was calling him a genius then suddenly nobody cared
for context i remember him tweeting a few years ago about getting kicked out of his parents house because he was smoking weed
gonna go out on a limb and say that i dont think it was the death of witch house that held him back, because salem came back and started touring again and hanging around a bunch of other celebs
if washed out can survive the death of chillwave im sure there had to be other reasons balam acab couldnt keep up
not at all, feel free to rec some!
https://open.spotify.com/track/3NlAkVIhq67sFHkBkc0qZc?si=6JAUaLPYRGGJerE3VQeyZA this whole album + silent shout
i sent this here !
yeah leaving his label and developing a fentanyl addiction didn't help, but i think salem were a bit older when they first became famous? also fires in heaven almost didn't come out - john has been in and out of prison, for example
balam was 19 when see birds came out and got used in that l'oreal ad with beyoncé
who up listening to aespa

it good tho salem good
so many alltimers on here
This is a fab list!! Wanting to mark off my ‘have listened’ again haha
I have been putting Black Country, new road off for AGES but keep getting recommended
i don't like them 😶🌫️
o no how come
idk they're just not my vibe
once you hear it i think you'll get why
the person who recommended them to me is very big into ambient music (which I really enjoy, but maybe not to the same extent). listened to the entire ‘winged victory for the sullen’ discog thanks to them actually (some was great some was a pass)
hmmm I will bear in mind
yeah they are far from ambient so that's 🤔
don't let my takes poison the well here ... many saying they are great
it's crazy how many alltimers i've never listened to bc im so angsty abt new music xd
oops sorry meant to reply to this!! if you don't mind non-english music i like this album a lot https://open.spotify.com/album/3ohoOaSAg6Mp64nFNYB5bM?si=mPr9MRtTTS-1nUnwrS9c8A&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A3ohoOaSAg6Mp64nFNYB5bM

a lot of my favourite albums are super basic - closer by joy division, violator by depeche mode, crystal castles (II), and of course visions and miss anthropocene by grimes
coil are an amazing band and i definitely recommend checking them out if you like experimental electronic stuff https://open.spotify.com/album/5smzxuV9SnGLiB9cksqZOg?si=wqG-CQakRIW3fNzR54UGXQ&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A5smzxuV9SnGLiB9cksqZOg
never too late to get caught up on music, this year was the first time in my life i heard pet sounds and half of the beatles' discography all the way through and i've been into classic pop/rock music for over 20 years
i only know like 3 songs from the beatles
there's a lot of all-time artists/albums i've never heard lol
you also don't have to listen to every classic or renowned piece of music ever
there are whole genres you might simply not vibe with much
that's true
also for those older classic artists there are like 5 different versions of the same albums and then i never know which one to pick 😭
for a lot of older artists, they have like 'remasters' or 'remixes', and then you have half of the people saying it's sooo much better, and the other half who absolutely hate it. and there's me in the middle: not knowing what to choose
i did this over 2021/22, checked out the complete discogs of a lot of "classic" bands and artists i had previously only heard a few songs - bob dylan took ages lol
it's easy with the beatles because there's an official discog now, rolling stones is more difficult because until their satanic majesties there's a british version and an american version of each with a different tracklist
(if anyone intends to do that i recommend listening to the UK versions of their first two then switching to US from the third album onwards)
pfff

porcupine tree is such an underrated prog band
love their music
steven wilson is such a talented lyricist
I love like putting on their music and zoning out to it
rlly glad they finally added fear of a blank planet to spotify. I'm p sure before they only had the live versions available. tool also joined the party lolol
been rlly loving bladee songs lately 🤍
idk y but I was stubborn to that type of music few yrs ago and I'll admit I was a stereotypical metal head 🤣
the metal head - kawaii anime girl pipeline is real
I am discovering Ethel Cain
And this song is beautiful
This is the first I'm listening to from her and I'm already in love
OMG. Crush. OMG
I love Crush
I'm gonna die, her songs are too good
it's a religious experience
good project thats one half of stars of the lid and dead texan
listening to kpop group 2NE1 this rules
I liked their self titled album but I got a bit lost after I listened to their entire discog in one night. Went from v beautiful to a bit dull, probably overdid it on the ambient
yeah thats fair i only really enjoyed the first one too
its that flavor of ambient i dont think you can get away with more than once because its truly just THERE and its soft and exists as part of the bg, it doesnt feel like it has enough teeth to stand on its own in the same way i think of like stars of the lid
which is a very nebulous idea in general, ambient thats al dente as opposed to boneless
al dente lmfao
Lol, I can't deny haha
I get you though, it's very 'base level' almost drone-y neoclassical
theres lots of boneless ambient out there, anyone can make it and nearly anyone has
same applies for noise
i can't get into ambient
i see it the same way as lofi, i maybe can put it on the background for studying but that's it
i feel like taylor swift's love story belongs on the list of perfect pop songs
together with coldplay's viva la vida
i was almost very upset by this and then i remembered that people think lofi is a genre now because the beats girl on youtube. in my head lofi is a texture or quality of recording thing. stuff that sounds not well produced or old
"lofi hiphop" is a genre but the name is kind of wack because it's mostly instrumental
yeah its much more widely considered a genre now but its such a contradiction in my head because that idea is that any hip hop can be lo fi, any kind, the lo fi part is a texture to the sounds not a style marker in my brain because im old and raised myself on music information that could not handle the SEO-ification of all genre
i wouldve called lofi madlib beats for sleeping

LMAO i ws a bit like that, all daark type music then i saw the light
(sheeeeeee shines her light, on mee..)
i think there is a tinge of logic to it, as those lofi hiphop beats will often artificially add crackle and "noise" to the sound to emulate this kind of tape recorder vibe
and then since it kinda blew up w that studying stuff, ppl just shortened it to lofi
yeah i get that but its still a weird situation because peoples first exposure to the phrase lofi is in context to the youtube stream
had boris on my "need to check out" list for so long
I saw them over the weekend

i support this decision

got this sad sack on the radio atm
oh it's the american top 40, no wonder all the songs are ass
top 40 and top 100 are the biggest misrepresentations of music ever and pretty much always has been a limited view of what is happening at the time. probably worse now because streaming is more rigged and manipulated than the old charts were. those were at least manipulated by way of excluding types of releases and or dividing things into "urban" charts
the top charts are such a backwards and archaic thing we still have to live with
i'm old enough to remember when they weren't quite so bad

this song was ruined by my uncles 60th birthday party
the band was mates with one of the organisers, and they were shit, totally made a mess of this song
then they ran out of songs to play, and so they played this again! eurgh!
it's not exactly a birthday party village town hall song either lmao
I'll take that as a W
smh censorship. now we'll never know what that pink blob is. surely it is nothing too risqué
for a second i thought you were talking about this lmao #1097296643646300271 message
it's a popsicle i think
just a worm
noooo haha
This song is so magical
so damn good i love mucc. i def need to listen to more of their discography i've mostly only listened to shin homurauta
this is my favourite mucc song, very nostalgic for me https://open.spotify.com/track/26CGwfxgFOTVURdtugZqzr?si=EAvgrkdaR6WR0lNFVEsiUQ
sickkkk ty for the song recc 🤘
time to delve back into mucc rabbit hole
i remember being so obsessed over zetsubou hahaha
i'm not a huge mucc fan but i believe that album is a rerecording of one of their older albums from 2002... need to check it out
you mean the shin homurauta album?
yeah i think some of the songs on there are re-recorded from earlier releases not sure if its the whole thing or not
yeah it's just that shin means new and they have an old album called homurauta haha
haven't listened to either tho
i accidently discovered them on spotify few yrs back lolol. they've taken the song(s) off like twice but is released as whole package now which im glad cuz i was so sad that i couldn't listen to those when they were taken off 😭
ohhhh that makes sense LUL
i mostly listen to them for the sound habahaha
got this on now (mucc are massive buck tick fanboys) https://open.spotify.com/track/3IW7RM4ltMxDzJsX2X6kkh?si=iJTOd20ATfiN8lU0L1M16w
i by no means fluent in japanese 💀
was listening to b'z earlier this morning
so fkin gooood
BUCK TICKKK
lov
they did a good cover of their song jupiter iirc
that's great
yusssss
i love it when bands are like rlly appreciative of other artists yk and create pieces inspired by others and/or make their own renditions
i love this video it's so 80s https://youtu.be/B6vONKPzE0Y
i remember going to tokyo tower and being like omg BT played there
iconic solo
crazy to me they went from playing upbeat new wave music like that to this in the space of 6 years https://open.spotify.com/track/3QsMxtzYCG0bcuiIp1bqfy?si=oD3TRdRrRAW66510pypAMQ
honestly a power move tho
its all good
they served rlly well with both the more upbeat 80s wild rock and matured gothic-esque experimental rock
it's a shame they didn't get more popular outside of japan because their discography is so varied
and like they've been consistently touring and releasing an album every couple of years for almost 40 years
fun fact this song was a staple of their live shows until 2004 i think?
love sm
tempted to make a 87-05 BT playlist...
there was a bz song i really liked when i was a kid but i can't remember what it was called
who up playing chess and listening to aphex twin selected ambient works 85-92
good idea
but im up working and listening to number girl omoide in my head 1 ~best and b-sides~
oh that sounds like a vibe too
based and aphexpilled 😌
listening to this is kind of wild because i hear so much influence from it in present-day ambient and electronic 😶🌫️ also great chess music this rules
yesyesyes could not agree more, truly a seminal work
it always strikes me how close a lot of the album is to modern techno - he has a reputation for being a more experimental artist (& that is probably more obvious on albums like Drukgs [my beloved]) - but SAW feels much more accessible than you’d expect (it is my joint fav btw)
Going 2 play Ageispolis have been influenced
i still don't know what techno is 😶🌫️ the 90s trend of calling all electronic music "techno" has muddied the waters i fear ...
i was listening to ageispolis and remembered you played it in nightmusic 👀
will listening to drukqs soon ...
spicy question 🥵 maybe will type essay about it sometime bc it’s arguably kind of debatable
lmk what you think of drukqs!! But also no worries if you hate it. It’s definitely a wild ride - think I mentioned before, but enormous juxtaposition between the softer piano melodies and the absolutely insane breakbeats/squelchy acid techno moments
I can answer this bit at least - the ‘acid’ bit refers to the squelchy?? sound
it’s quite distinctive will see if can find some examples when on desktop later
first 10 acid techno albums on rateyourmusic: i have never heard of any of these 🫠
for electronic subgenres (THERE ARE TOO MANY) the most helpful thing would be to find tracks that are great examples so i can hear them instead of reading descriptions
In fairness I’m not sure I could name many full albums hahaha it’s just a ‘know it when you hear it’ thing! Will be easy to recognise once you hear it
‘Oh yeah this album sounds kind of moist’
frfr jazz fans have a reputation for snobbery but at least they are reasonable with the genre names
it's rarely any more specific than "cool jazz", "fusion", "hard bop", "third stream", "big band" "modal jazz", "free jazz" and maybe a couple more
one of the above will be enough to cover almost any jazz release and give a good enough idea of what it sounds like
meanwhile electronic fans are like "nooo this isn't belgian avant-future-funk-breakcore it's bristol-post-club-dutch-acid-house-gabber"
‘Third stream’ what the fuck is this o no I like jazz but I am clearly a dilettante
Want to star this just for Bristol-post-club-dutch-acid-house-gabber
also hate that i know what most of these individual genres sound like
it’s me I am the wanker
it's not scary it's just a crossover genre of jazz and classical
also
- by big band i mean swing
- was going to say west coast jazz but "cool jazz" is pretty much the same thing so lol
- would add bebop but it's implied by "hard bop" (kind of bebop); also jazz-funk but that overlaps with fusion so whatever; guess latin jazz should get a shoutout too
- i forgot smooth jazz but lmao (nobody likes it) and jazz-pop which is ... i'd argue not even jazz that's like saying a martini is a vermouth-based drink it's flavouring
genuinely very helpful answer, filling in some gaps in my knowledge thank u
also ragtime and dixieland? historically important but does anyone listen to those anymore not really
also chuckling slightly at the martini comparison bc I feel like there is drink Discourse to be had although I’m not going to be the one to start it
think I need to set myself a jazz challenge & listen to all these subgenres more deliberately/label the existing stuff in my music library
i did that in february you can hmu for jazz talk
pls do expound (or can wait & ask specific questions if it’s a lot to explain, idm)
That’s ’I don’t mind’ not ‘intelligent dance music’ before I start more debates
lmao i was going to do it ... i was going to make the idm joke ... but i withheld it
you’re a better person than me
simply more experience ...

my advice is to avoid RYM for anything like techno because they dont know what music is if its not on an album, and techno is built off singles and eps for the most part

Tricky returns with his 13th album, ununiform. It’s a delicate, storming, intricate album that sees him further work with new, up and coming singers as well as collaborators of the past. ‘When We Die’ features Martina Topley-Bird, who first made an appearance on Tricky’s debut 1995 album, Maxin...
thank u for the 3 fun facts I also did not know before e
I can't tell if I liked this album or not
I was drawn in by the cover. It's ambient-ish & kind of synthy in a new-agey way. For some reason I was expecting it to be like Hiroshi Yoshimura's green album, but it's much less minimal. It does share some ambient elements (enjoyed those) & makes interesting use of traditional Japanese folk instrumentation. BUT don't think I will relisten, it's inconsistent & grating at points...the more upbeat parts are a bit strange, melodies kind of lean more 'children's television programme soundtrack'
It does conjure a really specific atmosphere. Overall the ✨ vibe
🐛 is you are a tiny bug breathlessly exploring the wide world of plants & sharing bc I thought maybe that is something that people in Grimescord want to feel

sounds like something id give a listenn
lmk what u think if u do
I have really mixed feelings on new age as a genre..half the time I find it a bit grating (?) so ymmv
idk this sounds kind of like "the weirder parts of nurture" are you sure it's not good
I’m undecided! There are lots of tracks in there that conjure this beautiful atmosphere (like Dandelion Sailing), but I’m less fond of the melodies in tracks like Army Ants
i'm listening and it's okay (?) so far but i'm in a very grumpy mood
will this make it worse
I don’t think so (?), for the most part it’s quite sort of…nature-driven & whimsical. But also
hope you feel better soon & do not risk worsening your mood for an inconsistent ambient album lmao
thank u
im sorta just sampling it, it sounds like ||stardew valley||
compliment of the highest order tbh, I’m not sure I would go that far but I did say a while ago that nurture reminded me of harvest moon so…it’s all coming together

some of the sounds are nearly 1 for 1 to me, like the exact same texture to some bits added in
stardew ost fresh in my brain so i hear it
intriguing, might have to give it another go just to try to hear this
im definitely not saying the whole of the ost, its missing the fake banjos and guitars like a magnetic fields track
theres just some choices that are very familiar

dropping a few of my faves from Floating Points bc was recently reminded of how much I love his music (his mixes also vvv good)

would compare him a bit to Four Tet and (maybe a bit) Daphni? makes kind of progressive-y electronic tracks that feature a lot of jazz & sometimes elements from Latin music, lots of atmosphere-building, amazing percussion...rly hard to choose tracks but putting a selection here for anyone interested
forgot to say also that they are all kind of slow burners/about the tiny details
-
classic floating points, kind of progressive/house-y/chill https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LtsjqgF6fw && https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0v1nBGdSSSE

omg han utada fan!!!
such a good song
she's new to me
but recently listened to this album & really really enjoying the production on it! this is my fav track I think (as well as 'not in the mood')
I mentioned floating points above, and he produced a lot of my favs! so it kind of tracks
u have fab taste as always 😌 any others you'd rec from her? someone else mentioned that Sakura Drops is worth a listen
ohh on this album??
yes!!
yes pls!!
I don't know her discography very extensively but other than that album I like these ones
thank u sm!! will put on my sheet
oooo I think a version of 'beautiful world' is on my version of this album maybe? will compare
and this one is my fav lately so good I guess it's in kingdom hearts lol https://open.spotify.com/track/23X0TilTVKSZ2qcMaoOE1C?si=DtazTNcbQ_6JbQoWSIgnCw
I think @gritty dragon might have more to show u hehe
~~I nabbed bad mode from his rec list so perhaps 😶🌫️ ~~
tysm! am excited to explore
lol my fav on bad mode is one last kiss it's sooooo prettyyyy like gives me chills
yes aaaa i'm p sure it was in nightmusic at some point even?! maybe it was u.... I had it saved lol so when I came back to the album I was like ‼️
ojhhh hahaha possible
beautiful world one of her best songs also can you keep a secret is pretty good
@crisp condor listen to sakura drops and travelling
yes there was a remix of beautiful world from 2021 it's a bonus track on bad mode
heart station is my second favourite album by hikki
one last kiss was my pick for the grimescord playlist after trying 50 times to get that faye wong song to work
not a remix exactly more like remake but it has a few different mixes
the opening of the anime series to your eternity is an utada song but i wasn't so keen on that one
yeah that's pink blood i wasn't big on it myself at first but it grew
interesting show in that the first season was a heart-wrenching exploration of how people deal with the death of loved ones, whereas the second season was mostly about trebuchets
didn't help they used the same song for two seasons, outstayed its welcome
shoutout to anyone who's ever felt Damaged and "unfixable"
