No worries. I was having some trouble as well, same thing. Need to have it plugged in and turned on. I didn't use the foam piece to place it, I use my hands. You can definitely tell when the artifact turns on and "catches" in the magnetic field. It took me a while fiddling with turning it off and on before it finally worked. Hope it works out in the end!
