Never had them but shawarma looks very similar to Mexican food so that one must be better. But we need to look at this from every angle.
To begin, both of these meals come from the east and consists and various ingredients such as beef, a tortilla, various amounts of vegies, and other elements that give it its unique look.
Although personally I have never had the opportunity to try these beautiful meals I can say from perspective alone they look great. Apparently from searches gyro has a sweet-garlic taste/texture and shawarma has a smoky taste as well as a sweet taste to it.
In conclusion both of these meals share their similarities but each has its differences with each providing a different manner of taste. If i was to pick from the two my first pick would be shawarma as I prefer a smoky sweet taste over a sweet-garlic taste.

But that's just me though
