Ok. I know the first time I played SHOC it crashed quite a bit but later figured out it was because of the latest 1.006 patch. I down graded to 1.005 and used ZRP (because it looked like it was recommended everywhere) and never had any issues after 2 playthroughs

Depends on the type of mod you are looking for. There is a pinned message with a link to some story mod reviews by one of the users here. I most like Incubator, Dreamcatcher, and Spatial Anomaly out of the story mods.
Plenty of mods utilize the maps from all games, mostly sandbox and soup mods. So like Call of Chernobyl/Anomaly and their variants and OP-2 (which also includes new maps).
Installation will vary from mod to mod, so you will have to find them and follow installation instructions. They are usually pretty simple extract to a folder type things though

GAMMA adds great gunplay and the weapons are awesome but it messes up vendors so you can no longer buy guns from them. It is heavily emphasising crafting.
