it mainly consists of what's referred to as "fill light" which is a very dim set of lights that cover all sides, and then the rest is done with basic "three way lighting" and more depending on what you want to go for

I realized I was doing about the same thing, but I first make 2 light sources on the first layer that illuminate very poorly, so that only the dim outlines of objects would be visible, then on the second layer I make light sources that emit light from something there skybox (Sky) pda, pnv and so on it can be seen on the eckhoskeleton on the poster with the grave, the third I do with global lighting and the fourth I add fog there if necessary and glare

it's generally best to do everything with lighting from scratch, so always with maps that have no light, most of the time i just use big empty scenebuild maps with no lighting and build my scenes myself with multiple props

everything i've done in these is with props, no premade maps

so don't be afraid to use more lights, even if they are dimmed down to almost nothing, taking into consideration that light reflects off surfaces, try to emulate that in places that seem fit for it, which could also be another type of "fill light"

If you have problems with the guns, I think that bandit will be the best one to draw

I think some Mercs had western names and they use UN weapons such as the M4 instead of Warsaw Pact weapons. It is possible there are some Western agents or opportunistic people from the West who joined the Mercs and that the benefactors of the Mercs could possibly be from the west, its why they use the weapons they use
