From a practical standpoint, duty is honestly useless. Their efforts to contain the zone are an endless eternal quest with no end in sight. The zone is a product of nature, and man can never hope overcome and control nature. Freedom on the other hand, embrace the zone for what it is and live a life of “let it be”. Which Philosophically and practically makes much more sense. Freedom doesn’t care, they want to do their own thing. They also hold down the border to the north from monolith. That’s pretty praiseworthy for the community as a whole. If we bother to look at cancelled S2 lore, freedom grows massively while duty dwindles in presence. A natural evolution of the zone. People don’t travel into the zone to destroy it, duty doesn’t even make any vain attempts to destroy the zone, they just project their politics and fight others. And they are hypocrites. They still artifact hunt and live the life of an average stalker. At least professor in the 79’ film had a bomb. He would have been an effective duty member.

Hell even the events of SOC and COP failed to contain or eliminate the zone. Duty is just wasting their time

@lyric fractal I’ll play the devils advocate here and say that containing the zone externally through borders is just as difficult if not impossible. The zone is roughly 64km according to S2 map alone. Imagine trying to secure roughly 25 miles of land from any possible anomalies or mutants from leaving (forgive my math if not totally accurate here). Anybody who has a wish granted also expands the zone. This rendering any military efforts useless as the zone would now protrude past the boundaries and cause stragglers to get through. I don’t think it’s particularly noteworthy either way as they would have a hard time surviving and propagating outside of the zone without being noticed.

Also the whole point of stalkers is they sneak in the zone. If the military were so effective at stopping mutants from leaving you would think they can stop any joe blow from waltzing his way over to the cordon. Yet here we are and that’s not the case. So the border topic feels like a moot point

Also what’s your implication entail on the zone being locked down forever? The military can’t even lock it down now when trying to do so. The zone already had a Zerg rush in the beginning days, everyone died. It’s not like they lined up to have wishes granted like they were waiting in line to see Santa Claus. They all got washed into Monolith soldiers. The monolith was a falsehood. Any wishes were monkeys paws anyway and threatened the stalkers more than the world. All of the big philosophical wishes Strelok can make at the end of SOC fail to affect the outside world, only Strelok is punished. Freedom has shown through experience to have little to no impact on the global state of the zone

If you thought duty was useless, make sure you play closer attention to all the tanks left behind that were clearly in action by the military. If you threaten the zone, she will punish you. Just ask the helicopter pilots from operation Faraday. Oh wait, they almost all died

But the military are not going to disregard stalkers entering the zone. They dont let you just enter. They would still shoot you if they saw you. Its Ukraine, not area 51, they dont have land sensors riddled throught miles of land. One rainstormy day would make it that much harder to see/hear something leave. Sidorovich and other traders have connections to the outside as well so supply trade routes already exist that look the other way. cracks in the system always exist. But as i said before, I doubt mutants could easily survive outside the zones habitat, let alone once observed by people. They instinctually stay to their territories anyway.
