I see it as part of an evolutionary step-ladder. Once a studio reaches a certain size and/or has enough money, they become a bit more ambitious which usually ends up with them attempting a huge project that's meant to be their first steps into the AAA world.

AA studios are capable of putting out AAA-level projects, but that doesn't immediately turn them into a AAA studio, rather I'm of the opinion that it's the first step in becoming a AAA studio. Provided that huge project does well, it allows for the studio to grow and potentially take on even more ambitious projects.
