to be completely fair, Modding is pretty unsupported until the SDK drops, the stance on the discord in general is, "S2 modding isnt very big rn so we aren't exactly going to make a new channel just for it"

from what i could gather, the new gen xbox will be kind of a hybrid, i dont think it will run full blown windows but a "immutable" version of it (so that the normie/clueless user wont be able to mess up the OS, just like steamOS)
i think they will make some sort of big picture mode for the Xbox App and then just run it by default on the new OS or w/e, like steam with the bigpicture mode, but i do think the user would still need to install steam and what not, the xbox app will act more as a launcher/wrapper of sorts i would guess

I wish they had just adapted what they had in the original trilogy. Shrinking the number of difficulty choices from 5 to 3 was a good choice, but having the higher difficulty outright nerf the player and adjust the economy to actively screw the over didn't feel right. Save that for a special hardcore mode or something.

Yeah. I think generally taking more damage and receiving less loot are good things to tweak. I dislike decreasing mission rewards and increasing costs and decreasing player damage though.

Normal does not really force you to conserve your resources so that's where I'd like to see a lot of the focus for a hard difficulty

Veteran in S2 makes me miss Master in the trilogy; you weren't nerfed, you didn't take more damage (technically), enemies didn't deal more damage, etc. All it did was balance the player's stats to put them on a more even playing field with the rest of the game.

As for loot tables, frankly I think that if they wanted to get more hardcore with it, they would need to do the inventory glut thing that Misery (and all mods built upon it e.g. Anomaly/GAMMA) did.

I actually liked it because I loved reading the item descriptions, it made the world feel more real, and you could sell that stuff.

They don't need to go hardcore with it, but I do wish that the survival mechanics were a bit harsher just so that they didn't feel completely pointless like they do now.

I was thinking of collecting some of the common complaints on balancing I've seen about the game, trying to identify the actual root causes of the complaints, and my suggestions on what I think could be done that would actually address them (since I think some of the proposed solutions I have seen don't really do this in a satisfactory way or would introduce new problems about as bad)

In SoC player weapon damage was indeed affected by difficulty, but even on Master you still dealt 100% weapon damage. In CS and CoP, you dealt 100% weapon damage regardless of difficulty.

From the chart I remember, damage resistance also wasn't modified in the way that you'd think; your innate damage resistance was reduced or removed, but enemies weren't causing extra damage to you like they had a +15% damage increase.

Basically, Master in the original trilogy just meant your special player-only bonuses were reduced or removed; you were put on the same level as everyone else in the Zone but you weren't nerfed.

The main one I'm thinking of is that completing the mutant hunting side-quests would reduce the spawn rates of the more dangerous mutants, and if you didn't do them, more dangerous mutants would have a higher chance of spawning. (The higher spawn chance might not have went into affect until you started freeplay though, I can't remember that specifically.)

Getting the various "Friend of..." achievements would affect the spawn rates of those factions' squads.

It's been a while since I played so I can't remember all of them, but I know for a fact that completing side quests and getting those achievements had a tangible affect on the world.

That makes all his audience hostile to the Player with little gain.
I realized it was better to ignore him, let him tell his dumb stories.
Now I use it as a forward base, supplies go in the stash beneath him, it's a shelter from Emissions

I'd like to offer a revised opinion/response to this if that's okay.

Far Cry:

So truth be told I've only ever played FC3. From what I've read about it, Far Cry 2 might qualify as an actual immersive sim, but every Far Cry since then only really has immersive sim elements (namely the player choice) without having all of the characteristics to properly qualify as one, at least as far as I know.

7 Days to Die & Minecraft:

7 Days to Die is an open world zombie survival game, I don't think it qualifies as an immersive sim based on that alone, but I've also never played it, so maybe someone else should answer for this game specifically.

Minecraft is an open world, survival/crafting sandbox and is definitely not an immersive sim.

Bethesda Games:

So, whether or not Bethesda games (namely TES and modern Fallout) qualify as immersive sims is going to boil down to opinion and your personal understanding of immersive sims as a genre.

In my personal opinion, I'd say that Bethesda games are primarily RPGs but with immersive sim elements, a strange hybrid if you will. They offer plenty in regards to player choice, but I'm not 100% sure if they have the necessary simulated systems to truly qualify.

The problem with immersive sims is that defining them is an incredibly inexact science; for a lot of people, it's as simple as "It's like Thief/Thief 2/Deus Ex/System Shock 2/Prey (2016), etc." but others don't treat the definition as narrowly. This is a debate that has been going on for a long time, especially when it comes to what games do or don't qualify as immersive sims, and unfortunately there never seems to be a 100% clear answer.

I recommend reading the Wikipedia page on immersive sims, as it's probably the best resource we currently have when it comes to determining how to define the genre.

I played FC1/2/3/5/New Dawn so I think I can offer a little perspective. 1 is very different from all the others so I don't really feel like talking about it here. 2 is not really an im sim either. They're all open world shooters, just different flavors of shooters.

I think the thing that made FC2 feel kinda special was the emphasis it put on the physicality of everything. You can shoot branches off trees, fire spread somewhat realistically and was a major gameplay mechanic, lots of bespoke animations for healing yourself from critical damage. Ambushes and guerilla tactics were totally feasible for plenty of missions. Definitely encouraged some thought and clever use of your tools. Hampered by lots of jank.

3 and onwards ditched some of those elements and focused more on conventional gameplay mechanics combined with the exotic locales the series had been using. They struck gold with some parts of 3 and that kinda sealed its schtick for the rest of time.

The basic premise is that you play one of several mercenaries (cosmetic choice only, they don't play differently) and are sent into a country on the brink of civil war to kill an arms dealer supplying both sides. It goes sideways immediately and you get cut loose and stranded as the conflict finally breaks out. So you do what you do and start playing both sides to try and scrape by along with your fellow stranded expat soldiers of fortune. Things do eventually go places, just only scarcely.

no, i used flick stick for a while and while technically it's probably the "best" if you want to be as fast and competitive as possible, but it's just not a very comfortable way to play. I use right stick for look while having gyro always enabled and eventually you get used to using stick for big movements and then gyro for the precise parts. you can pretty much "flick" on people if they are on screen, but if they are behind you then you gotta turn around which takes a second for sure. it's "good enough" for me, honestly i think all fps w/ controllers moving forward should have this type of thing on by default

It’s been getting a major update roughly every month, so there is progress. But it’s slow so far, a hotfix is coming and 1.4 is apparently not too far off either.

If you stopped playing before 1.2 the game is in a much better state in terms of bugs and crashes (it’s still got those things but not to the extent at launch)

Yeah generally the game is getting better on a monthly basis. Stability and bug wise it is much better than launch. If you were waiting for more design/systems improvements, there's been some of those, but I think they're mostly waiting for the game to be stable and less buggy first

No idea, last time I opened the game performance seemed way better for one thing.

I dunno, I still see people reporting weird issues and I do genuinely wonder if some of it might be their own fault.

My only complaints are bad ai, gameplay decisions they made, settings and lack of features

For at least some people, I swear they're either trying to play the game on a literal potato, or they're doing something to their PCs/the game files that's causing the game to have more issues than it normally would.

I think sometimes people don't realize they need to update or uninstall mods after a patch

And while I understand wanting to fix issues on your own, people need to be careful when installing mods for a game that's getting regular updates.

They’re probably throwing some other fixes in. Every time they patch something it’s quite a long list.

some people just dont know much about computers on like, a basic enough level to properly configure their machines, might be able to download a game or visit a website or use google or their email but outside of that they dont delve into the control panel, outdated drivers, dont touch windows update, something like that or a mix of

plus we cant say computers arent generally annoying let alone making games work sometimes, even the best of us face a game going haywire and being like, dafuq, then it turns out to be something simple but you either have to have experience looking for it or you just google it, issue being sometimes there are 100 solutions for one issue

I always laugh when people complain about Windows doing updates right when they're in the middle of something. I have never had that happen once in my years with Windows.

I'm pretty sure if that's happening, it's because you're not doing your systems updates when you're supposed to, and the system is forcing them on you to ensure the security vulnerabilities are patched.

probably, windows has maybe sometimes popped up saying i need to restart but its never forced it, but then again ive configured mine so its not automatic and other fixes here and there cause windows can be an ass too

It used to be way worse. I think one of the big reasons that Millennials are probably the most computer-savvy generation is because we were there for the early days of the Internet, and to get games working we sometimes had to do actual troubleshooting.

pretty much, the issue will die as we get older, generations coming into the world will make us feel stupid in a lot of ways, as we age

On the plus side, since I'm moving into IT (like I should have years ago but whatever), I'm confident that I'll have good job security for a while.

At least with younger Gen Z and Gen Alpha, their computer skills are apparently abysmal.

i always experienced rat hordes being easy to kill and not much effort, exactly like green said, i was going to basically parrot that, you can hold a corner and basically render them useless as they just walk one by one in front of your bullets
