i played W3 and enjoyed it a decent amount. i've tried coming back, and I don't know why, but it just doesn't grab me anymore. It's good, there's a decent amount of content. The combat is pretty boring to me though. Even on harder difficulties, the combat isn't better, it just requires more preparation. Witcher 2 is my favorite in the series, though I'm poretty lukewarm on all of them.

you're talking about AI, AI =/= alife. And that's the big problem, people use "alife" as a catchall term that doesn't really refer to the background simulation and npc persistence (and npc spawning, if you stretch it) that is alife.

That's because for some reason they put AA options under upscalers. So if you disable you will have no AA and the game needs some level of AA.
You can enable TSR or TAA and have them render at native.
TSR looks sharper and has less ghosting then TAA.
Set AA to epic and TSR scaling to epic and render resolution 100%.
It will render at native with all the AA bells and whistles.
TSR has more of a performance impact then TAA.

Even UE4 games can be noisy with out AA.
A lot of games just don't let you disable TAA fully.
The way Unreal engine handles PBR and specular lighting is really noisy compared to other engines and that inlcudes pre lumen lighting.

Dithered foliage LODs can used used in UE4. Which don't look good with out TAA.
Same with SSR you can make it dithered and require TAA to clean up.
There are just a lot of games you cant disable TAA. because they do a lot of tricks to save on rendering that TAA hides.
anything that adds a lot of subpixel detail will cause lot shimmering and noise that needs to be cleaned up. it not just Lumen and or Nantine.

Cyberpunk is on a different engine but its uses forced TAA, you can disable it via mods and its a horrid dithered sparking mess with out it.

Honestly fine with the input latency frame gen gives but in S2 it's just horrendous compared to Cyberpunks right now. S2 performance is terrible all around though. GSC fell to shiny new UE5 graphics trend. Game looks great, but going with 5 was too much of a trade off considering they couldn't even ship A-Life with it. Also TAA is just terrible on my bad eyes. Literally makes my eyes hurt.

On the same page as you, I expect the fix count to be high with how long it's taking, but the game has SO MANY bugs and so much jank most of it is probably just polish basically, nothing revolutionary yet or added features that the game lacks like A-Life/AI behavior.

Honestly in my 40 hours I never had softlocks or anything or issues with performance (besides insufferable memory leaks that never got fixed) cause I have a 4080. My issues with the game was that I felt it was obnoxiously dead and didn't have that randomness/surprise factor the older games did. Everything felt like it was empty until I got in a 50m vicinity and then all of a sudden there's gunshots behind me.

There are way more issues that made me stop playing for now, but I am waiting for that old A-Life charm to be added back in.

Framegen should only be used past a native 60fps on a high refresh rate panel. Input latency at 60 or above is negligible enough though not unnoticeable. However in a game where movement is already a little “weighty” or “floaty” depending on how you look at it as well as single-player with no twitch shooter responses needed. It’s a decent enough trade off to atleast have a smoother image.

However don’t ever try to use framegen as a “increase FPS” button as that is a comical misconception.

I think my biggest gripe with FG has to be the ghosting it can cause, I tend to notice that over the input delay on my system…

It’s super noticeable in Stalker 2 for instance when looking at walking NPCs feet. Likely due to DLSS/TAA smearing it makes you see a near motion blur trail coming from some NPCs boots when they walk through grass.

Or random “trash” sprites having a ghosting image following them as they drift across your vision.

The drop to 5 fps is a pretty common problem seen with nvidia-based systems in STALKER 2. Not everyone with an nvidia GPU has it, but lots of people do. I see that when it happens, GPU usage goes to 99%, which makes me think the GPU has erroneously been put into a low power mode.

It's been documented by various modders that the fps drop is tied into how much vram the hair textures use. Good stuff your 6650 isn't having memory leaks, my 4070 has been fine too. My friend on a 6600-XT also suffers from the memory leak and fixed it via mods that address the issue.

You will find overall better guns later into the game, but there is a role for all of them to play from my experience so far. So you definitely could, though it would be a bit harder than upgrading

Theoretically yes but in the endgame you're going to have to use way too many bullets because every enemy is armored and AKs have low penetration.

lmao I just started my second playthrough of stalker 2 on stalker difficulty and man people have it good. the economy is buzzin for my taste you get actually way too much money. Dunno if people ever complained about the economy of stalker difficulty but if they did thats ridiculous, the buff of the economy makes it even more ridiculous

I got stuck in an industrial area once in s2, and two of them attacked me at night, and I had nothing good to use against them. So I stayed on top of a pipe (while dying of radiation sickness) until a Ward squad came by at started shooting at them (even though they were invisible).

For me it felt a bit wrong. I ran into a spot with loads of buildings and seemingly infinitely respawning bloodsuckers plus occasionally respawning zombies. It was like getting a ringside seat to some show lol. Lots of vantage points to laugh at them from and no sense of threat at all.

So i cant figure out how to quick access the bandages. Medpack/food is "Q", on the left of the menu on the screen. I can see bandages in the right hand part of that menu, but cant figure out what button to press to use it. When i tried to rebind the keys (for stamina stuff and health) both button prompts ons creen changed to just say "Esc.", but obviously i didnt set it as that.

you can drag whatever consumables you want to the quick access slots, they are bound by default to Q and E

The 4 bind keys are now two. For one key to do two things, you tap it to do the first thing and you hold they key down, to do the second. You will actually see the second action form a lit up square action around they key to let you know how long it takes before it activates.

I'm a tiny bit annoyed that the long-press action can be interrupted almost invisibly at times though - like if you do something close to the end of the bandage animation and the bandage would self cancel

I had to remap most all of my keys, so I have a lot of experience with that. My hot keys are 8 and 9 on the circular part. Tap 9 for medkit. Hold it down for bandage.

I think the important stuff to fix is AI and tightening up the spawning so it feels organic and fun, regardless of entities having persistence. Otherwise it's kind of a rdr2 situation where sure, you could follow someone as they wake up to eat go to work and whatever, it's technically impressive but will never impact your gameplay and is 100% there for the people who already like the game to c00m all over while taking about it

i wouldnt say forgiving. definitely easy for players that are experienced with STALKER's standards of managing money and resources but i can definitely see completely new players have difficulty keeping themselves financially stable, especially in the notorious hobo phase

I played all 3 last year with mods that update the games. Very good experience IMO except Clear Sky. Still had a bug which caused the game to crash due to a corrupt file from the original

I'm not the person to ask but I think the OG games are very limited due to the fact that stalker were pioneers in the survivaly-open-world-y genre, which is to say it's technically impressive, but it plays incredibly stilted and janky for 2024 standards. As for mods I've tried ZRP, Autumn Aurora, Radiophobia and CoTZ (in order of more to less vanilla) and honestly it's a bit of putting lipstick on a pig. I did enjoy autumn aurora the most, but I still dropped out before even reaching agroprom.

Like, I like what they're going for, and I love the fact that these games eventually produced what is stalker 2, I just have never been able to enjoy them, and I speak as someone who was hyped about the release of SoC when I read about it back in 2003 or so.

Pathologic is great but it is/was way too janky to be consistently enjoyed despite the ambition and uniqueness imo
