Yes the “zone” (short for anomalous zone, where the game takes place) is filled with these strange phenomena called anomalies that seem to defy standard logic. It’s very dystopian. I guess you could think of stalker as fallout but not as open ended and less of an RPG focus (depending on what fallout metric we’re referring to).

It has linear moments but some missions have different ways to complete them with consequences to your methods and actions. And stalker 2 will feature multiple endings.

Id say u should at least give the game a try off of game pass if buying it seems like a big commitment

The trilogy, or rather the previous games, leaned more towards being linear but weren't entirely linear. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, however, should definitely be categorized as an open-world game.

If the old games are too old looking then I recommend Radiophobia 3. Its tough going but a very modern way to play Shadow of Chernobyl. Dont touch Anomaly right away as its mostly weak story is not cannon, it is a great free play mod though.

GSC tends to mix in some old footage in their trailers, and even the unreleased clips might not reflect the current stage of development.

From the gameplay demo and trailers, most actions still have prompts. New threats will likely be introduced through the story, along with instructions on how to deal with them.

It's still worth hoping that GSC will improve the guidance for players.
