That's a very good question. In CotZ there are two versions of the Brain Scorcher job. The most common one is where you are asked to stow all your gear and go to a specific person who will inject you with some serum and then you will wake up in southern Pripyat, in a Monolith suit with an AK and not much else. All your artifacts and other useful things are gone, unless you stashed them before you got injected. You go to the Monolith Base and have to start all over again, getting better armor, weapons, supplies and artifacts. Even if you stashed them before hand, it may be too far or difficult to get. If you had Companions before they are gone. You are expected to infiltrate the Brain Scorcher, as a Monolith, and once you turn off the switch, then you have to fight your way out. You are treated like a traitor once you turn off the Brain Scorcher. The other X-19 job is the normal one, where you go in as whatever Faction you are in and you go alone or take Companions. Here is the hard part. Regardless of your Faction, if you are allies with any of these Factions, they will give the infiltrator job: Freedom, Ecologists, Clear Sky, Loners and Bandits. ONLY the Military, Mercenaries and Duty give the regular Brain Scorcher job. If you were given the infiltrator job, you need to go back to an earlier save and not take it from any of the Factions listed and only the last three Factions will give it. For example, I recently was sent to General Voronin (yellow lettering PDA task, not the typical white lettering ones) where he tried to give me the typical Monolith vs Duty firefight in the Truck Cemetery. I made a manual save (never use quick saves) right before I talked to him and got TC > reload and got TC again > reload and got the Brain Scorcher job. Day 135 in my game.

I do not recall ever doing that infiltrate as a Monolith job. I have checked with some other factions but the job is not a dialog option.

It just randomly pops up from the many, many different jobs you will be sent to from Faction leader to Faction leader. I was actually doing several local jobs for Beard on the Skadovsk, as the next one that came up is when Beard said go see General Voronin. As I did, you may need to reload whatever job you are given, until the one you want randomly pops up, as I described. Otherwise it may take some time before it does.

Thanks. Any hints on keeping companions alive? I have stopped taking them because it usually is a death sentence for them. You know, "enemies to the west" and off they go to die, or they just walk into an anomaly. Even when I upgrade their weapons, it doesn't help much.

I'm sorry. I misunderstood you. You are talking Miracle Machine which is X-16 and I was thinking of the other. Once time I got the X-16 job and the Psi Helmet but before I could do it the job failed due to the Faction giving the job changing from allies to enemies. In that case, I had to wait until I was given it again, which was funny because I was given a second Psi Helmet and I quickly did it, not wanting a repeat of the DFR changing on me.

When you wrote the word "infiltrate" I stopped reading and immediately thought you were actually given the Monolith infiltration job.

@zinc sun When traveling with Companions, place them on "Passive" to prevent them from running off to kill rodents or any other mutants, including DFR enemies. If you engage enemy NPCs while traveling, your Companions can often get too excited and commit friendly fire on your other Companions if they are in the way. Choose carefully when you change them from "Passive" to the other two choices of "Aggressive" or "Defensive" (when fired upon) as needed. Keyboard commands are best as you may not be close enough to engage in dialogue boxes on the screen. I generally leave my Companions in a safe shelter, in a level if I want to go off alone. Be sure to use "stealth" if you want them to duck down and remain less visible.

Ask me about any level and I will advise what safe shelters I use, as not all levels have good shelters, in case there is an Emission or Psi Storm. I try to pay attention to the frequency of both types as my Psi Storms are 12-18 hours apart and my Emissions are 18-24 hours apart.

Yes, emissions have been quite the annoyance with all the faction relations seemingly changing at random. Some shelters I have to fight my way into.

I will continue with this playthrough until the release of STALKER 2.

35? That is far too large an adventuring party! I have had 5 at the most.

Yes, 6 is about right, 12 is max and beyond that some shelters are not big enough. 35 is hard to manage. I've had 40 Companions at the most. By the way, did you talk to Gonta in the Truck Cemetery?

You have to increase your rank to be able to hire more Companions. It also depends on your starting Faction. For example, the Loners are most difficult, as you are neutral yellow with your own Faction and you have to turn them green to hire Companions.

Friendly fire means your own Companions will shoot your other Companions, that get in between them and their target.

I prefer buck shot at all times, however the Hunting shotgun only takes darts or slugs I believe, that are okay for long distance shots against NPCs but not always against mutants.

I never found the chaser at the marshes. I usually just use the hunting shotgun with slugs although I did do it differently on my previous playthrough by using the viper 9x18 instead of the hunting shotgun with slugs.

Clear Sky only - Never leave a level and go to the next unless you have a lot of money ready to immediately buy the stash info. For example there are 50+ stashes in the Marshes. You get them from looting, from rewards and from buying the info. You have about 3 days to do this when the Game starts, after that they become less available.

Yeah. I usually buy bandages, some med kits, ammo, weapon repairs, AK upgrades, and the CS heavy armor and upgrades for that so I don't really try to buy stashes.

You're missing a lot. The worst thing people can do is be in a big rush to go to the next level, with no money, crappy weapons, crappy armor, no ammo, no supplies and then get into a rage because they are not prepared.

I like keeping the stash dots off the map and in a blue box close to a safe exit for the swamps or at a main base for the rest of the areas

There are 5 Quest items to find and get in the Marshes to get rewards for. If you keep one of those, you will not be offered the next.

Do not take Quest Item jobs from people on the move or in risky locations. If they are killed, you are out of luck before you retrieve the item or after you retrieve the item, but they die before you get your reward.

My advice was more for starting in the Marshes. If you are already in the Cordon, then you are farther along than my advice may be helpful.

You get totally different armors, weapons and equipment depending on what Faction you become friends with.
