It depends. Many words have multiple meanings, especially when translated into another language. I can be given a Russian word that could have dozens of different meanings, depending on how it is used. Give me the word you see, as written in Russian and we shall see.

Garik was never supposed to be changed to Gary. Can you imagine meeting a local in Ukraine and they introduce themselves as Gary? Vobla got changed to Tuna because the translators thought English language people wouldn't recognize the Vobla as a Fish, so it was changed to a more common fish, the Tuna. There are dozens and dozens more examples, but I didn't realize this until years later I tried the English version and was horrified at the bad job the translators did. I just don't think GSC, at the time, realized at the time the changes, or maybe they thought it didn't matter. They were too busy working on Stalker 2 immediately after CoP was released in English in 2010.

Free stalkers is a general label for those who chose to be free, not abiding to any faction nature (but they can be vaguely referred to as a faction, but they do not act as such).
Loners are a faction that is more of a faction. It does not have direct command and rather operate under specific figures whom lead, not the whole faction as a concept, but rather sub factions or groups.
Diggers, neutrals, and so on, are basically sub-groups under loners. They have different objectives, operates differently, and follows different chain of command.

Ready for your mind to be blown? Normally your PDA when underground, will not tell you the level you are in when in a Lab (I think). However, go into X-18, and take the stairs going all the way to the top and then pull out your PDA Map and tell me what you see.
