You can either join no one or join two factions at once. If you join the stalkers, you can then move to Duty or Freedom. If you are a bandit, only go to Freedom. If you first entered into Duty or Freedom, then only into stalkers.

I always thought that it would be much worse. The gameplay and the gun animation is so much better than in SoC 👍. My only nitpick is that the entire screen shakes when any type of explosion happens, gets very annoying after a while.

Have not watched much of CoP gameplay but hopefully it is just as good as CS

the only issue I had with CS is that the steam overlay didn't work unless you launched Steam with admin priviledges, but other than that it was smooth sailing.
I can't say the same about CoP stuttering. That game still has that issue and there's not a clear cut solution because the 3 zones were too big to handle all the alife movements in the first place. You can take the most suggested solution you find online, being to tune the alife.ltx file so that it gets online all the entities at once but then you might risk some npc dying to mutants/other factions infights.

Tbh I do understand well immersion and I appreciate it a lot but I still wish that S2 has zones separated by loading screens (e.g. using an npc guide to fast travel there)

In short working for scientists isn't in mercs plans

scientists don't tend to hire mercenaries that often, and probably only do this when there is no other option. In Call of Pripyat we see a squad of mercs led by Black guarding the bunker at Yanov, but that was just a cover up for their true task, which was to prevent the scientists from obtaining any information about objects from the X labs. Moreover, they were only hired due to an inside man at the institute for which the scientists work. We can learn about all of that from Jackal's message found in Black's PDA:

My man at the research institute will recommend that you lead the expedition. He will have to hire your boys to guard the bunker. That will make things easier for you. Remember, the client doesn't want ANY information about the operation of X-designated objects to reach the scientists.
