Maybe it doesn’t deliver on its main premise but if the subsections of the game can offer something enjoyable to the player in place of a solid story, then in their eyes it’s not a bad game

Just finished AC mirage, its story was meh, characters forgettable and parkour has been simplified beyond belief. But it’s still been one of my favourite stealth games because the level design and freedom of approach surpasses other titles that might have different focusses.

Minecraft is one game that leaves me zombified/bored after a while, but I always come back to it with fresh interest months later

Even Starfield. I love that game, but after first and 2nd playthrough I was halfway zombified, so I've stopped. Still that urge to go back is still there and just like any other game that falls into rotation... It'll be a month until I'm bored again

Good player autonomy is KEY!!! Let me guide my OWN story. Bethesda makes aggressively linear games. Sorta like how Telltale tricks you into thinking how u have freedom of choice when ur choices don’t matter in the long run.

Sensical and deep characters. I don’t want stereotypes of characters represented in games. Like “typical bad guy” or “typical morally grey dude” or “typical hero”. I also don’t want a super colorful and playful world with no sense of urgency as to what you have to do. If the world is ending, god damn it let me feel that.

Respect to lore. Pretty self explanatory. Don’t make unnecessary and unsensical lore changes/retcons

I tried it. It is fine to switch off your brain but what kills it for me are the loading screens every 5 seconds and everything is randomly generated out of the same 6 assets and layouts.
Also apparently the whole NG+ part is shallow as heck. They could have done so much with it if they ditched the obsolete engine from 20 years ago and ditched the randomly generated slop including the quests.

Yea. Bethesda wants fallout to be about the post apocalypse itself and the rubble and destruction. Fallout is about the societal changes that arose after the bombs dropped. That’s one of my biggest issues with Bethesda fallout

If we are thinking about a story that has an actual timer until the world ends or whatnot, the desire to explore would be lessened greatly as a side effect. Games that have those artifical, staged moments of story progression like bg3, subnautica or even stalker would be a good blend as you have the time to explore the spaces you are in and engage with the world, but are ultimately focussed on the main quest since that's the primary goal. Timers would instinctively provoke efficiency and speed over thorough exploration, I know I for one would beeline the story to get to the open world bit, then go back to find what I missed. Ironically, a forced timer with the promise of freedom afterwards would have people caring less for the story as it just ends up restricting their own desires.

Bg3 manages to find that balance pretty well from what I've seen, but something like breath of the wild is the complete inverse.

I mean, that section where you are disabling the brain scorcher, I didn't bother exploring since that timer made me wanted to get it done quickly, rather than stopping to pay attention to what was actually going on there

So while I do feel like the bgs games don't do a great job of making the main quests that interesting, I'm not sure a timer is the go to solution

I personally wouldn’t make a game that continues after the main story line. The story is what wraps it up. If you missed anything on the first playthrough, play it again. The time doesn’t have to be super short but shouldn’t be super long either. Not only does this fix the issue of player bee lining the story (bc the game ends when the story is finished), but also enforces the player to make multiple play throughs of the game to experience all the other side quests and explorable places.

There are other ways to make a story feel urgent and meaningful however. Designing the story without the need for an artificial time is one other way

For example, instead of saying “hey help us or we’ll all die very soon!!!” Sorta makes it sound like there should be some sort of emergency response. But making the story like “hey there is a looming threat that might kill us all, we need you to figure it out” makes it feel like there is a sense of urgency but it’s not super forced

So there wouldn’t be a need for a timer for that sort of story design

RDR2 has me wanting to progress the story because of it's illness plot, and I want to finish it, and I care about the story a lot because of it. Yeah, I just appreciate the games that give you space to do whatever, but I feel like every single quest-based game gives it to you. Witcher 3 was a really nice journey where the urgency was find someone, okay find someone else and explore along the way. Cyberpunk's 'death clock' was a downgrade. Sure, it can make you care, but the dying within weeks part was so fake. Starfield got that - Okay we're in the next discovery phase, let's head out when you're ready up until the very end where stepping through is also a 'Do or don't, whenever"

I didn't think I'd like it because the rockstar 'be the bad guy' style wasn't something I liked, felt like it was all about running over civilians and robbing people. but that entire feeling becomes a core theme of the story, so it felt rather natural

Vertibirds 100% require refueling. Maintenance and refueling of the Enclave vertibirds is one of the primary missions for the Navarro base, as stated by Dick Richardson.

The distance between the Oil rig and Navarro is supposed to be around 175-200 miles from what I've seen, so it could feasible take around 10 complete refuelings to get between Lost Hills and the Citadel, so it's not realistic at all for the BoS to be sending vertibirds cross country.

Not to mention that repairing a vertibird out in the field would be a nightmare if anything important broke, so the trip would be stupidly dangerous and unlikely to be worthwhile.

Radiophobia is OGSE 0.6.9.2 (which is a MUCH earelier version of OGSR) with dark colors and hardcore balancing. In other words, it's just SoC but hardcore and with extra thingies
Call of the Zone is just Call of Chernobyl that has been modded, while keeping the vanilla feel
OGSR exists as two things - OGSR the engine, and OGSR the mod, which also has the engine. OGSR the mod is vanilla SoC with new guns new characters, a couple of cut locations, a bunch of new quests, and it's really really noice
Lost Alpha is Lost Alpha, that's about it
Spatial Anomaly is a really nice Call of Pripyat story mod. Old but gold
EFP is a modpack for Anomaly
