The regular dozes of radiations that caused the burns they have is rather usually considered lethal and should've caused certain death.. but for some reason, they mutated and got mutilated into snorks. Perhaps there was another reason for their mutation other than just radiation? I am not sure, but they were clearly hospitalized, considering that their bodies were warped in bandages.
Perhaps it was just radiation and genetics? They either evolved and built radiation immunity to survive radiation exposure (then lost their minds from the pain/solitute/or brain cortex being dipped into radiation) or degraded into non-conscious being.
The zone chose to make them in the end
