i mean, you can still very easily play any game you want on 16gb on windows 11 if you just optimize windows a bit. Ive gotten my w11 installation down to using about 4gb of ram on launch using less than 8 with a bunch of tabs open and discord among other stuff even after having it running for a day and playing plenty of games

For reference, the entire 2 months I played I had a Space Engineers server running with 6 people (8-12GB consumed) my standard 10-15 GX tabs, Discord, steam and obviously S2

Most I ever saw consumed was 29GB, didn’t impact performance in S2 enough to pull me out of focus or deviate a lot from my S2 benchmarks (no applications in background)

Granted this was with my 13700K, no way my 9800X3D will be able to handle the same load and keep performance up

That’s been a complaint since day one though, the variation in how well/bad the game runs even on identical systems

S2 seems to simply not like certain setups of Windows/hardware for unknown reasons and kick the bucket repeatedly, while people with identical setups might encounter little to no issues.

My overal 350 hours of S2 have been near flawless, small mission bugs and a single memory leak aside

PSA to anybody wanting to attempt it: AMD decided to implement shunts on the 9070 xt much differently than NVIDIA does, maybe as an attempt to prevent power mods. Most obvious change is they are not 2512 except for the PCIE. But even if they were, adding a parallel R00X shunt on an existing R00X shunt won’t net you a 100% power increase, since there are more resistors along the trace to the sens device. For example my card had 10.1 ohms of resistors and 10.05 ohms when adding a parallel shunt. Then the shunt terminates on two pads each with separate traces that the controller seems to compare against one another. So for three 8 pin connectors there’s six power sensing traces plus PCIE.

I started with parallel shunts but ended up replacing resistors to drop impedance by ~50% and bridged the two sens traces from each 8 pin connector at three spots on the PCB to ensure they were reading identically at the controller.

After nine trace bridges, replacing 12 smd resistors, and four parallel shunts it did work but goddamn I didn’t know what I was in for. GPU voltage doesn’t budge much at all with just the power mod (I pulled 521 amps at just under 1V Vcore on a pass) so I did also find FB/VDiff pins on the controller to utilize analog voltage control with the EVC2. I was able to improve clocks slightly with about 150mV but not too much more than the power boost by itself. Also worth noting [my card] stopped scaling at 481 watts (~33% power increase from “regular OC” via software) so I wasn’t able to fully utilize the extra 50% power headroom even with more voltage. 3509MHz was the highest I could achieve.

I went after memory voltage too but that was a waste of time. Manually increasing Vsoc and VDDIO only made the memory unstable so I went all the way back to stock memory voltage 😑

Not for nothing with overall highest scores (Steel Nomad leaderboard attached 😎) and still on air. Maybe tomorrow I can get the card on water to see how much higher I can run it up.

I fixed my vram temps. I just had to make the fans run a bit harder at slightly lower temps. Now I’m getting 48 C gpu temp, 66 C hotspot temp and 79 C vram temp at ~2900rpm (35-40% fan speed)

Well biggest problem today is shader compiling. I guess we will not get rid of that. With games getting bigger and bigger. Best way to combat that is having more cores to get it faster done. Maybe Zen 6 can help on that for lower end CPUs. If they have at low end 8 core CPUs like 5 11600x or something called.

Like even games like Victoria 3 a strategy game needs to shader compile

Yea. But r6 changed to DX12 and with that they did throw Vulkan out for some reason. Every pro player said Vulkan is the best(ofc not for all systems vs dx11)
Now with dx12 the game has huge stutters and lag. Just a mess. The default is dx12
